DSW Mission

“We prepare students to teach and lead in the social work profession with a particular focus on teaching as

social work practice. We partner with students to prepare graduates to assume the roles of faculty to teach, develop an identity as a scholar practitioner,

write for publication and other forms of dissemination, and pursue social justice through

leadership in the academy and community.”

Why a teaching-focused DSW?

•  Expansion of BSW & MSW programs nationally has created strong demand for doctoral-prepared faculty. Currently, doctoral programs are not graduating enough individuals to fill these needs.

•  Many universities and colleges have moved beyond the requirement of the MSW as the terminal degree for tenure track positions

•  Strong practitioners and adjunct faculty need teaching skills, writing and publication skills, full understanding and integration of the roles of the professoriate, and credentials to confidently teach and lead in university settings.

DSW program-at-a-glance:

•  Three-year curriculum; 45 semester credits (15 courses) required

•  Cohort model: Students move through the program as a group, forming strong personal and professional connections

•  Online synchronous and asynchronous instruction

•  On-campus residency each summer in St. Paul, MN (2 weeks)

•  Fall and Spring semesters comprised of two successive, 8-week sessions

•  EITHER a teaching practicum OR an interprofessional education experience completed during final summer residency

•  “Banded” dissertation

Teaching Practicum OR IPC Experiential Option 1: DRSW 725 - Teaching Practicum (3 cr) Students will teach a portion of a summer course during the on-campus, summer residency under the supervision and mentorship of program faculty. Ø  Alternatively, students can request to teach a full summer course in St. Paul,

with compensation, under the supervision and mentorship of program faculty

Option 2: DRSW 724 - Interprofessional Education / IPC Experiential (3 cr) Students will gain experience in interprofessional education through the UST Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services, working with the IPC Director of Social Work Services during their on-campus, summer residency. www.stthomas.edu/ipc

DRSW 800: Banded Dissertation

Candidates for graduation will submit three publication-ready journal articles for peer review: •  Issues, themes, pedagogy, or

population link the articles •  One article research-based

During the first on-campus residency, DSW students are introduced to archival research during a trip to the Social Welfare Archives at UMN’s Anderson Library

•  Technology requirements: Available to download from website

•  Synchronous instruction –  Adobe Connect used for web conferencing –  Minimum of 4 synchronous sessions per course –  Faculty will post schedule of synchronous

sessions in syllabus at beginning of each course

•  Asynchronous instruction –  Blackboard learning management system –  Faculty will use a variety of online learning tools,

including discussion boards, videos, wikis, and more.

Admission Criteria: •  MSW degree from a program accredited by the Council of Social

Work Education (CSWE) •  Minimum of two years post-MSW social work practice experience •  Social work license eligibility •  Minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for

previous graduate work •  Commitment to teach and lead in the social work profession

DSW Admissions

Application Requirements: •  Completed DSW online application & application fee •  Transcripts from all previous institutions from which you received

credit –  Transcript evaluation and acceptable test scores for proof of English

proficiency, as appropriate for international applicants

•  Three letters of reference •  Personal statement •  Writing sample •  CV or resume •  An interview may be requested

DSW Application Process

•  All completed applications will be reviewed by the DSW faculty admissions committee after January 12.

•  All letters of recommendation and transcripts must be received before your application will be reviewed.

•  Admission decisions will be communicated by mid-March. –  As appropriate, a “wait list” may be created

Tuition & Financial Aid:

DSW tuition for 2014-2015 is $1045 / credit. A total of 45 credits is required to complete the program Financial Aid Applications are submitted to the University of St. Thomas Graduate Financial Aid Office. The DSW program has a Summer 2015 start-date.
