Welcome to this year’s conference

Whilst compiling this programme, we were struck by the myriad styles of treatment and philosophical perspectives that our extraordinary system of medicine encompasses. The British Conference of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine 2015 will reflect, embrace and celebrate this, our infinite variety.

We are delighted that some of the world’s most renowned speakers have agreed to share their knowledge, and we are equally pleased to offer a platform for more emerging voices. There will be lectures with a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) focus, workshops from a five element perspective, stems and branches, qigong and meditation sessions, practical demonstrations, discussion forums and much more. We hope that you find the programme as exciting as we do!

Our conference this year also marks 20 years of the British Acupuncture Council. We have planned a groovy Saturday night party as well as other fun social events over the weekend to celebrate. We’d love you to get involved – if you have a hidden talent, please get in touch and we’ll find you the right place to showcase it. Be brave and drop us a line …

We’ve also moved to different city and a new venue, Nottingham’s beautiful and widely accessible Orchard Hotel. Nevertheless, for the fifth year running entrance fees remain unchanged and still offer excellent value for money. We hope that more of you than ever will join us at what promises to be a stimulating event full of learning, friendship, and happiness.

Even if you’re not sure that you can make the conference itself, please note that all BAcC members are invited to the Friday night lecture, AGM and drinks reception, free of charge and regardless of whether you choose to stay on.

Finally, we would like to thank Dong Bang Acuprime for their generous sponsorship of this year’s conference. We look forward to welcoming you in September.

Infinite variety – vive la différence!

IAN APPLEYARD & BEVERLEY DE VALOIS FACILITATED BY MARK BOVEY,

BACC RESEARCH MANAGER

Ian Appleyard is course director of the BSc Chinese medicine acupuncture course at the Confucius Institute for TCM at London South Bank University. Ian studied with a private practitioner in Japan in 1996 and graduated with a BSc in acupuncture from Westminster University in London in 1998. Ian has also completed postgraduate clinical training at the Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of TCM in Nanjing.

Beverley de Valois is a research acupuncturist for the NHS and is interested in exploring how acupuncture can support cancer survivors. Beverley is an honorary research fellow at the University of Bristol and a fellow of the British Acupuncture Council.

Saturday 16.30-18.00

BECOMING A RESEARCHER: DOES THIS WORK FOR ACUPUNCTURISTS? Nowadays all bona fide acupuncture students have to learn some research. Most of them set it aside when they graduate but some are keen to keep up with new research or even to become researchers themselves. It can hardly be said that there is a well laid-out career pathway for acupuncture researchers, nor a manual telling you how to be both practitioner and researcher, so we look for examples and role models amongst the few who have taken this step. Beverley de Valois and Ian Appleyard were each awarded BAcC research funding in 2014/15 and they will talk about their projects and their research journeys.

This will be an interactive workshop.

WHY THE EVIDENCE BASE ON ACUPUNCTURE CAN HELP US BUILD OUR PRACTICESThe remarkable growth in the number and quality of trials of acupuncture for a range of conditions has provided an excellent basis for getting the message out there about the benefits of acupuncture. Take for example the treatment of chronic pain, which comprises around 50 per cent of most acupuncturists’ practices. The latest data from the evidence base is that acupuncture significantly outperforms the ‘placebo’ effect and it compares well with other physical therapies and with medication. Moreover, the evidence from basic science research is providing us with an increasingly widely accepted understanding that acupuncture is a physiologically plausible intervention. This presentation is designed to provide some of the latest evidence on acupuncture, which in turn you can use to help build and sustain your practice.

Hugh MacPherson trained as a practitioner of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in the early 1980s and continues to practise acupuncture in York. He founded the Northern College of Acupuncture, set up the Foundation for Research into Traditional Chinese Medicine and subsequently joined the Department of Health Sciences, University of York, as a senior research fellow. His research includes conducting clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of acupuncture for a variety of conditions. He is the lead editor of the book Acupuncture Research: Strategies for Establishing an Evidence Base, and a co-editor of Integrating East Asian Medicine into Contemporary Healthcare.

THE HEART ZANG AS LORD AND LIEGE: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF XIN, XIN BAO LUO AND TAN ZHONG Many practitioners see the heart/small intestine side of fire as completely separate from the pericardium/triple burner side of fire: according to classical theory this is neither correct, nor is it always clinically useful. This session will help participants better understand the regulatory movement of xin, xin bao luo and tan zhong, and learn how to apply this in clinical practice in the treatment of fire CFs and cases where there are fire official pathologies. Extensive reference will be made to the characters and clinical uses of points on the heart and pericardium channels, as well as key points on the ren mai and du mai. All practitioners and students with an interest in the five elements and clinical application of classical theories are most welcome to attend these sessions, irrespective of style of practice.

Niki Bilton trained at the College of Traditional Acupuncture (CTA) and has maintained a private practice since 1982. She served for many years as an undergraduate/graduate lecturer and clinical supervisor at CTA. She is now academic dean at Ongiara College of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Ontario) and also teaches across the globe. Niki delights in bringing the magic of nature and Daoist classical theory into 21st century clinical application for both patients and practitioners.

The heart holds the office of lord and sovereign. The radiance of the spirits stems from it. Tan zhong has the charge of resident as well as envoy. Elation and joy stem from it. STEPHEN BIRCH

Saturday 10.00-13.00

THERAPY AND THERAPIST: QI AND ITS ENGAGEMENT The early acupuncture literature mentions a number of treatment approaches and stresses the idea of qi regulation akin to how sages regulated themselves. This qi focused therapeutic approach is described in the early literature through descriptions of the internal state of the practitioner and how to cultivate that state in order to properly engage and thus regulate qi. This lecture will draw from the early literature and propose a big picture of acupuncture, examining how practitioners are placed and what their goals as therapists are within that context. It will include models of qi from the early literature and describe how these can be used in modern practice, how to develop oneself as practitioner, and how to engage qi through touch and when needling. The workshop will include some demonstrations to illustrate the ideas discussed.

Sunday 09.00-11.00

THE QI JING BA MAI: THE EIGHT EXTRAORDINARY VESSELSThe eight extraordinary vessels represent a very deep primitive qi regulatory system in the human body that can produce strong treatment effects. This lecture will cover the history and development of the extraordinary vessels and will present an overview of various theories that have been put forward about them, various descriptions of their pathways, and traditional as well as a variety of modern ways to use them. Some speculative discussions of the possible biological nature and development of the extraordinary vessels will also be presented.

PETER DEADMAN

Sunday 09.00-11.00

EATING FOR HEALTH AND LONGEVITY Amidst all the competing theories on what constitutes a healthy diet, it is useful to look at the deep wisdom and centuries of experience of the Chinese nourishment of life tradition. Combining these with the findings of modern research, Peter will discuss the core questions of how to eat, how much to eat, when to eat, and of course what to eat.

Peter Deadman co-founded Infinity Foods natural food business and the Brighton Natural Health Centre. He qualified as an acupuncturist in 1978 and subsequently completed his studies in herbal medicine. He is the founder of the Journal of Chinese Medicine and has variously practised, taught and written about Chinese medicine for the past 35 years. He is co-author of A Manual of Acupuncture and is author of Live Well, Live Long, a book on traditional Chinese health cultivation.

Experts at curing diseases are inferior to specialists who warn against diseases. Experts in the use of medicines are inferior to those who recommend proper diet. On the Treatment of the Aged, Zhi Chen, 11th century CE

LORIE EVE DECHAR

Saturday 10.00-13.00

THE FIVE SPIRITS: A TECHNOLOGY OF TRANSFORMATIONThe five spirits provide a mythical view of the nervous system and form the basis of Chinese medical psychology. They also describe a precise and efficient means for psychospiritual transformation. While this ancient system is recognised by scholars as an integral part of the cannon of Daoist and traditional Chinese medical literature, it is under emphasised in the standard TCM curriculum. In this session, Lorie will draw from a wealth of sources including translations of classical texts, etymological interpretations of ancient characters and clinical examples from her practice of alchemical acupuncture, in order to offer an understanding of the five spirits and the unique insights they offer about the true meaning of health.

Sunday 11.30-16.00

INTENTION AND THE SPIRIT OF THE EARTH ELEMENTThe spirit of the earth element – the yi – supports us in holding steady with our commitments, practices, and goals over time. It endows us with intention, the ability to unify our thoughts, and the steadfast application of our creative force toward a single goal. In many alchemical texts, the yi is viewed as the key to the inner work of psychospiritual transformation, the pivot point between spirit and matter, heaven and earth. Lorie will work through a variety of specific protocols that practitioners can adopt, including spirit points and essential oils, to enable them to address the worry, obsessive thoughts, eating issues, and stagnancy on physical, emotional and spiritual levels, that can be characteristic of the earth element.

Lorie Eve Dechar Lorie Eve Dechar is the author of Five Spirits: Alchemical Acupuncture for Psychological and Spiritual Healing. For the past 15 years her focus has been the Daoist alchemical and archetypal underpinnings of Chinese medicine as they inform psychospiritual healing and transformation. Lorie is a faculty member at the Tri-State College of Acupuncture in New York City, and founder of the Alchemical Healing Mentorship.

PETER FIREBRACE

Saturday 10.00-13.00

STAGNATION AND RELEASEBehind these two evocative words, stagnation and release, lies a web of stuckness and its resolution. From physical tightening to knotting and pain, from emotional limbo numbness to exiled isolation, the crystallisation and gelling of unresolved patterns of obstruction and stagnation can lead to chronic illness and even death. Some need the rooting of the kidneys and the stilling of the heart, some the freeing of the surging power of the liver and the awakening of the exacting nature of the gall bladder, some the loosening of the caged tiger of the lungs, so that tong pain becomes tong free communication and health is restored. Blending the wisdom of the nei dan – inner alchemy – tradition with the immense resource of Chinese medicine, we will study this important subject, including key acupuncture points for treatment.

Peter Firebrace

Peter Firebrace began his acupuncture studies in 1980 at the International College of Oriental Medicine (ICOM). He has also studied Chinese language and philosophy with the Ricci Institute in Paris. Past principal of ICOM, he co-founded Monkey Press, publishing the Chinese Medicine from the Classics series. Co-author of A Guide to Acupuncture, he has produced educational DVDs on The Roots of Chinese Medicine and The Body Map of Chinese Medicine, and a book of poems on Chinese medical and Daoist themes.

NORA FRANGLEN

Saturday 10.00-11.00

THE SIMPLER THE BETTER: A FIVE ELEMENT APPROACH TO POINT SELECTIONAccording to five element acupuncture theory, the key to successful treatment is to diagnose the patient’s guardian element, or causative factor (CF). Point selection is then directed at supporting this element. In this lecture, Nora will attempt to remove some of the mystique which has developed around point selection, make suggestions for effective treatment protocols, and will hope to instil practitioners with the confidence to trust in the power of a few simple, well-chosen points.

Nora Franglen

Nora Franglen trained as a five element acupuncturist under JR Worsley in the UK and was the founder/principal of the School of Five Element Acupuncture in London. She is the author of numerous books including The Handbook of Five Element Acupuncture, and Patterns of Practice. She writes a popular blog and has published a book based on this. Nora believes very strongly that five element acupuncture is a complete discipline in itself and that a greater understanding of five element practice can help people to improved health and greater self-fulfilment.

Our patients give us plenty of time to find the right element.

‘Don’t hurry, don’t worry’ is a good mantra to keep in mind. The more

calm we remain, the more acute our assessment of the sensory information

the elements are passing on to us becomes, thus enabling us to pinpoint our patient’s

causative factor

SANDRA HILL

Sunday 14.30-16.00

THE EIGHT EXTRAORDINARY MERIDIANSAt a time when we are seeing increasing levels of ‘whole system’ pathology, the eight extraordinary meridians are a vital part of our work with patients. These eight channels provide the basic patterning for yin and yang within the body and act as the original blueprint for both the formation and maintenance of the twelve ‘ordinary’ meridians. The classical texts of the Neijing and Nanjing provide a simple guide to their physiology and pathology, while illuminating their importance within nourishing life practices.

Sandra Hill

Sandra Hill studied in Japan before graduating from the International College of Oriental Medicine. She is the co-founder of Monkey Press, and has worked for several years with sinologists Claude Larre and Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée. She is author of Chinese Medicine from the Classics: A Beginner’s Guide, and Reclaiming the Wisdom of the Body.

Friday 16.30-17.30

THE 5TH PILLAR: BIOCHEMICAL TESTING IN THE ACUPUNCTURE CLINICThe methods of Chinese medical clinical assessment and the identification of organ patterns developed long before the invention of the microscope. As such, biochemical understandings of the human body, with the typical focus on reductionistic reference ranges, can seem at odds with our training and our understanding of our patients. In her presentation, Mel will present a framework in which biochemical lab investigations can be used harmoniously with our traditional understanding of patterns of disharmony in order to improve patient outcomes, enhance our understanding, and give our clinical skills a 21st century update.

Mel Hopper Koppelman completed her MSc in acupuncture in 2012 and is currently undertaking an MSc in nutrition and functional medicine. She has consulted for a number of national patient advocacy organisations, including Migraine Action and has been published in numerous medical journals. She is on the Executive Board of the Acupuncture Now Foundation. Mel looks forward to living in a world where science and intuition harmoniously co-exist, and acupuncture gains the respect it deserves from both the scientific and medical community.

HEALTHY PEOPLE, HEALTHY PLANET? A HOLISTIC VIEW OF THE ECOLOGY OF HEALTHHuman beings comprise the earth, air, fire, water, space, time and consciousness - just like the planet Earth on which we all live. In his keynote lecture, Satish Kumar will describe why humans will never achieve good health if our planet is ailing, and why our planet cannot be healthy if humanity is sick. He will draw parallels between healthy people and a healthy planet, describe why the two are not mutually exclusive, and demonstrate that they are necessarily a continuum.

Satish Kumar is a former monk and long-term peace and environment activist who has been quietly setting the global agenda for change for over 50 years. Satish has been editor of Resurgence magazine since 1973. His autobiography, No Destination, has sold over 50,000 copies. He is author of You Are, Therefore I Am: A Declaration of Dependence, The Buddha and the Terrorist, and Earth Pilgrim. Satish is an advisory board member of Our Future Planet, a unique online community sharing ideas for real change, and is vice president of the RSPCA.

We need to keep ourselves healthy so we can look after the

planet, and we need a healthy planet to provide healthy soil, clean water,

pure air and uncontaminated atmosphere. To maintain good health we must seek to cultivate a pure heart

and a pure mind within ourselves. This holistic view of the ecology

of health is an imperative for our time

ARYA NIELSEN

Saturday 14.30-18.00

THE SCIENCE OF GUA SHA AND ITS RELEVANCE IN CLINICAL CAREGua sha has been shown to be effective in reducing pain and fever, improving range of motion in musculoskeletal conditions, and facilitating breathing in a range of lung disorders. Research suggests that it helps reduce liver enzymes in hepatitis, an indication of liver inflammation. Gua sha can thus be viewed as an effective tool in supporting internal organ function as well as internal organ pathology. It has also suggested a biomechanism for this treatment, to account for what patients have experienced and practitioners have observed for centuries. In this lecture Arya Nielsen will describe how and why gua sha works, illustrating its effect on diseases of the lungs, cardiovascular system, liver, spleen, kidney and brain. She will also cover the new Safety Standards for Gua sha (press-stroking) and Ba guan (cupping).

Sunday 11.30-13.00

GUA SHA PRACTICEGua sha has traditionally been taught person to person. In this practical lecture, Arya Nielsen will demonstrate gua sha to areas of the body for external as well as internal organ conditions. Attention will be paid to important steps in the application of gua sha including the position of the patient, what parts of the body the treatment should be applied to, the safe use of instruments, and whether or not to apply lubricants.

Arya Nielsen is an American acupuncturist taught in the classical lineage of Dr James Tin Yau So, and has been in practice since 1977. She is considered the western clinical authority on gua sha. Arya has an academic research doctorate and a faculty appointment at a New York teaching hospital, Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Her research includes both the physiology and therapeutic effect of gua sha, and acupuncture therapies for acute care and in-patient setting, as well as the treatment of chronic pain in under-served populations. She served on the Joint Commission Stakeholder panel on pain that led to a revision of their pain standard to include non-pharmacologic therapies as a necessary option for patients in US healthcare facilities and out-patient clinics. She is the author of Gua sha: A Traditional Technique for Modern Practice.

VOLKER SCHEID

Sunday 11.30-13.00

POISON IN CHINESE MEDICINE: WHAT IT IS AND HOW ONE MIGHT TREAT IT WITH ACUPUNCTURE AND HERBSThe notion of poison or toxin in Chinese medicine is as ubiquitous as it is ill-defined. Some physicians suggest that treating any illness is essentially about removing toxins from the body. Others reserve the toxins for a very small range of very serious disorders. It is sometimes equated to processes like inflammation or infection in biomedicine, but it also has long-standing associations with specific groups of people, climates and places. In this seminar Volker will seek to cut through this thicket of competing and mutually exclusive concepts and ideas with the goal of defining core symptoms for diagnosis and strategies for treatment.

Volker Scheid grew up in a family engaged in the cultivation of medicinal herbs. Following an apprenticeship as a gardener he came to England to study phytotherapy, acupuncture, Chinese and Japanese herbal medicine. He spent three years at Beijing and Shanghai Universities of Chinese medicine, as well as studying privately with different master physicians. This led to a deepening academic involvement with East Asian medicines pursued at the University of Cambridge, SOAS, University of London, and now at the University of Westminster, where he is director of the EASTmedicine Research Centre. Volker believes that seeking to embody the ideal of the traditional scholar physician (ruyi ) is the most effective means of making available the enormous resources of East Asian medicine to the modern West. He welcomes you to inquire with him directly as to how these medical traditions might benefit you.

MASTER ZHONXIAN WU

Saturday Sunday07.00-08.45 07.00-08.45 & 14.30-16.00

SHAKING THE BLUES AWAY: CLASSICAL QIGONG FOR DEPRESSIONAccording to the classical qigong tradition, there is only one disease: qi stagnation. Qi stagnation (or loss of qi flow) forms irregular patterns in the energetic, mental and/or physical planes of the body which will eventually manifest as ill health. By transforming stagnation back to free-flowing qi, we work to recover our health and sense of wellbeing. This classical qigong therapy promotes the free flow of qi throughout the body, optimises the function of the organ systems, and brings balance to the physical and mental bodies. This session will be of interest to practitioners looking for a simple, yet powerful tool for helping their patients overcome depression.

Saturday 11.30-13.00

CHINESE MEDICAL ASTROLOGY Chinese medical astrology is an extraordinary traditional Daoist system of finding the root of a person’s health challenges and for optimising treatment strategies for Chinese medicine practitioners. Understanding how the qualities of macrocosmic qi at the moment of birth relate to current energetic rhythms not only provides deep insight into a person’s health condition(s) but also guides the practitioner to best support their client’s journey towards wellbeing. In this lecture, Master Wu will introduce:

• the medicine tree: a brief mythological background

• the body structure of Chinese medicine astrology

• heavenly stems and the 10 organ systems

• earthly branches and the 12 meridian systems.

Master Zhongxian Wu

Master Zhongxian Wu is a lifelong Daoist practitioner and the lineage holder of four different schools of qigong and martial arts. Since 1988 he has instructed thousands of students, both eastern and western. He is the author of twelve books – five in Chinese – on Chinese wisdom traditions.

AMOS ZIV

Saturday 14.30-18.00

CHANNEL THEORY ACUPUNCTURE: THE MERIDIAN WAVE APPROACH TO IMMEDIATE RELIEF AND HEALINGChannel theory lies at the basis of effective acupuncture and serves as a pillar of Chinese medicine, connecting the universal laws of yin and yang to the inner body workings of the zang fu organs. This system has been used successfully with thousands of patients and has been taught to hundreds of practitioners worldwide. It has been clinically validated in a randomised controlled trial for acute back and neck pain in a major hospital in Israel. In this lecture delegates will learn to activate a powerful leverage of meridian channel qi to facilitate immediate pain relief and healing based on classical TCM channel theory; it will provide a clear step-by-step pragmatic protocol for the treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.

Sunday 09.00-11.00

QI HUA: THE DYNAMICS OF QI IN THE CHANNELS ACCORDING TO WANG JU YI’S TEACHINGSQi hua theory – the dynamics of qi in the channels – forms the basis for understanding the relations of channels, environmental climates and inner workings of the internal organs in classical TCM channel theory. Wang Ju Yi is one of the most prominent contemporary acupuncturists of our era. In this seminar, Amos Ziv, Dr Wang’s personal student, will explore theoretical and clinical aspects of qi dynamics from the teachings of this contemporary master.

Amos Ziv

Amos Ziv is the former director of clinical research in Shiram Integrated Medicine Services, Asaf Harofeh Medical Center, Israel, where he headed the Acupuncture for Back and Neck Pain in the Emergency Room Clinical Trial (ABNP study). He is a graduate of the American College of TCM, San Francisco, California and an expert in TCM channel theory applications. Amos has studied as a personal student of Professor Wang Ju Yi in California and China since 1999. He has published numerous articles both in TCM and scientific journals and speaks internationally. Amos is the owner and manager of Heaven and Earth TCM Speciality Clinic in Rehovot, Israel.

“ ” I think there was a lovely atmosphere in the hotel and at all the meetings I attended. It was lovely catching up with quite a few people I had lost touch with. Thank you for making me so welcome.

“ ” Thanks again for putting together this wonderful event and holding it together so gracefully and smilingly. It was my first conference and I’m already looking forward to the next one! Great place, fantastic gathering of people and nourishment on all levels.

“ ” As a first-time delegate at the conference I was so happy to be there and thought it was all fantastic. Well organised and highly informative. I hope you are very pleased with yourself. You should be!

“ ” Just wanted to feed back on my excellent day on Saturday at the conference. It was a really wonderful programme with truly inspiring speakers, and gave me a much needed lift! My only complaint is that there was a programme packed full of things I wanted to participate in, and I could only be in one place at a time. Next year, can you offer a cloning service so delegates can attend all events? Many thanks for a magical day!

“ ” Back from a brilliant #BAcC #Acupuncture conference. Feel very inspired! Well done @NickPahlBAcCCEO and team!
