Usually when we think about someone who is ‘internet famous’ we think of celebrities posing on social media or viral videos of teenagers doing silly things. Not anymore! 87-year-old Helen Ruth Van Winkle (better known as Baddie Winkle) has taken the internet by storm after her great-granddaughter set up an Instagram account and posted pictures of Winkle in some very age-inappropriate clothes. She’s since gained over 3 million followers on the photo sharing app!

COMMONWEALTH GAMES

TEAM SPORTS

The first time team sports were played at the Commonwealth Games was in

1998, when Cricket, Men’s and Women’s Hockey, Netball and Rugby 7’s were

added to the program.

QUEENS MESSAGEThe relay baton has traditionally

contained the message from the Queen to the athletes. For the 2006 Games in Melbourne,

the ‘Queen’s message’ was actually stored on a memory chip

attached to the baton.

CORE NATIONS 6 core nations have attended

every Commonwealth Games - Australia, Canada, England, New

Zealand, Scotland and Wales.

In 1911, the first ‘commonwealth games type’ event was held in London to celebrate the coronation of King George V. This event was known as the ‘Festival of Empire’ and included teams from Australia, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

The first official Commonwealth Games was held in Hamilton Canada in 1930, and at that time it was called the British Empire Games. The event has taken place every four years since then (with the exception of 1942 and 1946, which were cancelled due to World War II).

Over 5,000 athletes compete at the Commonwealth Games in more than 15 different sports and more than 250 events. The first, second, and third-place finishers in each event receive Commonwealth Games medals: gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. Apart from many Olympic sports, the games also include some sports that are played predominantly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls and netball.

Although there are 52 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 70 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games, as a number of dependent territories compete under their own flags. The four Home Nations of the United Kingdom—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland—also send separate teams.

LOOK BACK AT LAST MONTHFebruary was a busy month as we embraced the last of the hot weather.

Music appreciation continued as an activity across the facility every morning, and residents continued to contribute to the upgrade of our outside areas.

A trip to O’Sullivan Beach boat ramp was enjoyed by all who were able to view the boats coming and going (images below).

The Bowls League continued to be a popular activity on Friday afternoons with everyone working up a sweat to cool off with a well deserved drink at happy hour.

LIFESTYLE ACTIVITIES

O’Sullivans Beach Visit

Christies residents enjoyed a visit to the O’Sullivan Beach Boat Ramp in February.

They took in the sea breeze whilst watching the boats come and go over morning tea.

A GROWTH MindsetFOOD NEWS

TECH TIPA MAGIC CURE FOR IT ISSUES

It is lovely to show you care by cooking special or favourite meals for resdients but it’s important to be safe in preparation, transport, reheating and storage. Over the next few months we will share with you some tips on how to ensure your meals don’t make anyone sick.

Immune systems get weaker as we age and stomachs produce less acid which makes it easier for harmful germs to get through the digestive system.

If elderly people get food poisoning they are likely to suffer severe consequences that range from dehydration to neuromuscular dysfunction, or even death.

Keep your eye out for our upcoming guidelines but keep in mind that some foods pose a higher risk than others ie. cold meats, cold cooked chicken, pate, salads, chilled seafood, cheese, ice cream or dairy.

Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? The hare was so cocky he would win that he went to sleep during the race, but the tortoise plodded along, believing he needed to work hard and keep going if he was to win.

This was because the hare had a fixed mindset and the tortoise had a growth mindset. Mindsets can affect the way that we think about everything.

The good news is that you can change your mindset to one of growth. Neuroscience shows that our brains continue to develop and change, even into our twilight years. Old dogs really can learn new tricks!

There are 3 key things that

you can do to develop a growth mindset:

1. Recognise that a growth mindset is not just good, but is also supported by science. Be committed to developing a growth mindset.

2. Learn and teach others about how to develop and improve their abilities through adopting a growth mindset. This will help you to take control of your life, which is hugely empowering. Research shows that people who feel in control tend to perform better. It’s a virtuous cycle.

3. When you hear that little critical voice in your head telling you that you can’t do something, reply with a growth mindset approach and tell it that you can learn.

Do you ever wonder why technical support people always seems to recommend you to try rebooting your computer whenever you report a problem? Do you think it’s because they don’t know how to fix the problem? Do you think they are just trying to be annoying?

The real reason is that they know how much occurs during a system restart. When you reboot a computer it doesn’t simply power itself off and back on again, the operating

system actually goes through a series of diagnostic checks and fixes any problems it detects automatically. If a program was eating up your memory or temporary hard drive space those resources will be freed up following a reboot. Computers, even those just out of the box have lots of software installed on them, some you will never see or interact with. The longer software runs the more likely it will begin to misbehave. Rebooting a computer restores the hardware and software to a refreshed state.

If you reboot and the problem goes away then you know that the computer was just ready for a reboot. If you reboot and the same problem repeats itself the list of possibilities are narrowed and further troubleshooting can focus on resolving the problem rather than identifying the problem.

Additional tip: Be proactive and reboot nightly or weekly. Wouldn’t you rather reboot on your terms than be forced to reboot when you are in the middle of something?

WHERE WERE YOUIN 1945?

1945 was a year that many will never forget as World War 2 ended in Europe on May 7th. King George VI was busy ruling England at the time. Shortly afterwards, Hitler and his wife of only one day committed suicide. The US President Roosvelt also passed away following complications from polio.

IN AUSTRALIA, there was more bad news when our Prime Minister of the time died in office and was replaced by Frank Forde who was only in power for one week (he is still our shortest serving Prime Minister!) before Ben Chifley was elected. Phew....what a year!

The population in Australia was just under 7.5 million and the average yearly wage for a man was £312, whereas for a woman it was a measly £134 (!!!).

An average home would have set you back

around £80,000 and the first Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race was run on 28 December with British yacht Rani taking the winners podium. Do you remember what you were doing that year?

KEEP MOVING

Watching professional athletes compete, whether at the recent Winter Olympics or upcoming Commonwealth Games, can be awe inspiring. The raw talent, extreme fitness and strength….memories of what we once could do! What better way to motivate one’s self to improve your own well-being or level of fitness.

Not everyone can be a superstar or professional athlete, nor do they have to be to gain the benefits of regular physical exercise.

To help maintain motivation it

is best to set goals. Set long term goals for what you would like to achieve, it could be to hike up a hill or swim over 100m. Then work back and set up smaller goals, goals that will help you improve to achieve your main goal. The main point is that these smaller goals should be achievable and act like stepping stones to achieve your ultimate goal.

Increasing our strength and fitness capacity is possible for everyone at any age level or ability. It all begins with a common theme, plan, start and continue to commit.

JOKES & GIGGLES

There was an elderly lady standing on the street. She had both hands holding on to her hat, while the wind was blowing her dress up around her waist. A dignified gentleman came up and said ‘Madam, you should be ashamed of yourself, letting your skirt blow around like that. It’s very indecent, and both your hands are holding on to your hat!’ She replied ‘Look, mister, everything I have down there is over 70 years old. This hat is brand new!’

Wife: ‘’Do you want dinner?”Husband: “Sure. What are my choices?”Wife: “Yes, and no.”

What has fifty heads and no brains? A box of matches!

Why did the bee fly with his legs crossed? Because he was looking for the BP Station!

Why do eggs not tell each other jokes? Because they crack each other up.

Ray turned 70 in February and celebrated in style, with not just 1 but 2 parties!!

Ray enjoyed the company of his sister Heather (pictured immediate right) and other residents who all enjoyed the celebrations over his birthday weekend.

Ray is a keen Port Power supporter and follows the AFL season. He also likes to watch cricket. He lives at Christies with his wife

Heather and has made several close friendships with other residents.

Ray loves fishing and is hoping to make use of our close proximity to the beach.
