The system principle for producing all premixed mortars was born in the 60s-70s and is rather obsolete. During those years, there was no electron-ics that could highly simplify the me-chanics of a plant. Moreover, products were really poor and with a very low technological content, and the plant had a limited reach.

Nowadays the situation is very differ-ent. While the voluminous raw mate-rials, such as lime, cements, aggre-gates, are available all over the world, one single plant has a reach of thou-sands of kilometres. Thus, a mortar mostly composed of sand and cement travels thousands of kilometres, while the same raw materials can be found locally.

The know-how of this sector is no longer represent-ed by aggregates or mineral bind-ers rather than by the formulation of the chemical recipe (resins and additives). but the lat-

ter is hardly more than 4% of the ana-lysed products.

You can see that only 2% of the formula consists

of “technological” products (resins and additives). All the rest is common products, such as sands and ce-

ments. If we take a look at costs, 95% of

fixed production costs are given by moving of

also generate all logistic and trans-port costs, i.e., 12% of the final prod-uct for domestic transports and more than 30% for international transports. To separate technology production from the production of the final prod-uct makes company structures very flexible, dynamic and competitive.

Where the aggregates are silica sand or carbonate; the mineral binders are hydrated or air lime; or cement; or gyp-sum. The chemicals are the difficult component of the product.

A REAL CASE STUDY: STORY OF AN C1T CLASS ADHESIvE BAg FOUND AT SABHA IIN THE LIBYAN DESERT.

In the process that led to this bag, it all started with the extraction of thousands of tons of silica sand from the bed of the Po. The sand was transported into huge factories for drying at Parma (nb: probably using Libyan gas to dry it).Afterwards, this inert was taken away in a truck to a factory in sassu-olo where everything was mixed with cement which, again by truck, was transported to another factory. To this mixture was added 1% of chemical compound. The result has been packed in bags in mixed plastic/paper material, placed on a wooden pallet, further wrapped with plastic film (for shipping). After the production, it was transported in trucks towards the port of Ravenna, where by ship it reached the port of Tripoli. There it was loaded onto a truck towards sabha hundreds of miles across the desert. Question: Is it a reasonable business model that provides for the sale of dry sand in the desert?

THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT WHEN DEFININg THE vAL-UE OF A PRODUCT Is TO ANALYzE THE COsT sTRUCTURE.

In the classical system ancillary costs not related to the raw materials nor the process are approximately 80% of the total. so you buy at high costs a low value product and it is mainly due to excessive charges and the excessive brokerage inefficiency of the system.

In the Personal Factory system we have made a clear distinction between costs related to product quality and costs related to brokerage and inef-ficiency.

We have almost completely eliminat-ed the latter and in parallel we have increased the costs associated with product quality. The result was to in-crease quality while reducing costs.

FIXED ASSETS

The Personal Factory system allows the retailer a very low capital tied up in front of profits more than double compared to the classical system. All our customers work only in Just-in-Time, which is a production that normally is at the behest or with very low inventories. The voluminous raw materials (ie, aggregates and binders) are raw materials already available at the warehouse retailers. They are substances of low value, high turno-ver and that are used in countless products. With a gray cement 42.5 R often already in stock you can pro-duce more than 90 finished products. The same inert is used in hundreds of products.

The chemical compound travels with courier in small batch volumes that can be as little as 40 kg. The sealed unit dose packaging of the compound is also used for any outstanding bal-ances to be preserved for months or even years before they are used.

DISTRIBUTIvE FLEXIBILITY

The Personal Factory is simply the most advanced and flexible production system in the world. It allows you to produce lots of just 100 kg of different products at intervals of about 5 min-utes. This has 2 advantages. It is the only system in the world that allows you to manage color in a complex and advanced way with dry mortars. This means that now any powder product that the store can sell can be colored.

We have customers that produce re-pair mortars, self leveling, finishings, grouts, adhesives in different colors. Add to that the possibility of a virtu-ally unlimited use of binders (gypsum, lime, hydraulic lime, cement, etc.) that can be replaced on the machine within minutes. In parallel, our customers can use materials typical of the tradi-tional local production without caus-ing complications.

RETURN ON INvESTMENT

The Personal Factory has the big ad-vantage of having an extremely fast return on investment. statistically on average, we can see that our custom-ers are able to repay a complete pro-duction facility in a time ranging from 6 to 18 months depending on the prod-uct range and choice of production volumes. To this end we have many agreements with leasing companies that can offer packages to 5 years with affordable rates.

The example given in the chart on this page shows a direct com-parison between costs a sales outlet has to bear to produce our IsOL-COLL b40 adhesive and the costs for a compara-ble adhesive by a market leader company. FLEXIBILITY

Up to date, the Origami 4 plant is the most flexible production system in the world. In less than 10 minutes one operator can change raw materials. On the average, the operator can clean the whole machine in less than 5 minutes. In less than 2 min-utes the operator can change to a differ-ent type of product. All this by having the possibility of getting thousands of colours for each product. Millions of combinations within easy finger’s reach.

PRECISION

The dosing of raw materials is carried out by the electronic control of the screws. Thanks to this control, we have compact screws carrying out dosing operations very quickly and which are very precise at the same time.

FAST CLEAN

Fast Clean configuration. The whole plant has been developed to be easily cleaned. For this reason, we have reduced to the minimum contact with the processed ma-terial. Moreover, the machine facilitates cleaning operations thanks to its very high frequency vibrations. You need less than 10 min. to clean the machine manually and thoroughly. In less than 2 min., the machine is cleaned good enough using the automatic procedure. The surface to be cleaned is 1% of the classic system. A 100 times less com-ponents to be cleaned!

TECHNOLOGICCHOICE

Origami 4 is the main component of the Personal Factory production system. This system is so revolutionary and evolved that you have a plant on a surface smaller than 6 m². Its copyrighted technology is one generation ahead of what is available now-adays. For the first time, quickness, flex-ibility, reliability, and a fast operativity are available in one single compact platform that can be managed on a finger’s point.

ECOLOGIC

Under normal conditions of use, the plant consumes less than 6 kW. This means less energy waste. Having no mechanic parts that need to be cleaned, it enables us to highly reduce material waste, which however is non contaminated material and can be used as a sample or be packed for selling in case of accumulation of greater quantities. In addition to this, by using the Personal Factory system you reduce by 95% the transport of material on long distances.

OJIT SYSTEM

For the first time, the combination of Origami 4 and the Personal Factory system allows us to produce the material needed exactly when the final customer needs it, thus avoiding storage facilities and locking up of capital.

SPIN PACKAGING

This copyrighted system allows packing by simply using the generated centrifugal force. Compared to packing with a screw, this is much faster, more compact, cleaner, and there are no wear parts. Just to get a clear idea: with this system, the 20cm long joining component replaces more than 20m of production line of a classic plant. The system requires less than 10 seconds to pack 25kg. Having no contact compo-nents, the contamination between differ-ent materials is considerably reduced.

VHTM

vHTM. very high turbolent mixing. This copyrighted system has two basic char-acteristics: high peripheral mixing speed and fall of the material to the centre of the mixer. Thanks to this system, we can en-sure a perfect dispersion even of low pro-portioning components. Dispersion is the basis for production of final materials with a high complexity degree without slowing down production itself.

EXCELLENTAUTONOMY

The machine can contain more than 6 m³ of raw material. This means a production capacity of approx. 8-10 tons of final prod-uct without recharging the machine. The machine has been developed for requiring very short recharging times: in approx. 20 minutes, it is possible to recharge 2-3 m³.

QUALITY

SERIAL PRODUCTION

The advantage of a serial product. The Origami 4 platform is the only complete production plant manu-factured off-the-shelf on a large scale. Only for its executive project-ing we invested more than 80,000 hours/man, while we invested 20,000 more hours for testing the premanufacture series. Thus we can guarantee a higher precision, quality, and reliability. An unbeat-able handling simplicity and an ex-cellent functionality.

qUALITY

We follow the highest quality standards for the production of each Origami 4 platform. All mechanic components are man-ufactured using pressed plates with a minimum thickness of 10mm per part. These components are then rectified in order to obtain perfect connections. Each mechanic component is finally polished to ensure a further protection against corro-sion. The shell of the mixing unit is produced via hot spinning of a single 5mm-thick plate on a die. Compared to the classic calendering systems, this procedure gives a single piece with no weldings and a 100 times higher precision.

In order to guarantee the highest qual-ity levels, each mechanic component is manufactured in Italian factories by Italian companies. 90% of the electron-ic parts is realized in factories situated in Italy, Germany, France, or Japan.

The entire plant structure is composed of 3 concentric chassis completely separated. In this way, the components are mechanically isolated and pro-cess vibrations won't be transmitted to weighing sensors.

MAINTENANCE

From the very first projects for Origami 4 platform, we have always believed an easy maintenance is determining. For this reason, we have constantly pursued a “re-engineering” that lead us to only 12 assembled groups. 80% of them can be re-placed in less than one hour by simply unscrewing on the av-erage 3 screws. Normal wear parts have also been oversized in order to guarantee the longest life possible. In any case, all main components are standardized, die cast, and always available preassembled in our storehouse. As for electron-ics, it has been highly simplified and brought to standard high quality components. Replaceable parts can be easily reached and replaced in less than 10 minutes. by the way, we always have in stock both electric components and complete switch boards so that a rapid intervention on the machine is guaranteed. Finally, switch boards are 5 times more com-pact than classic boards used for this kind of plants, and they are sealed and dust and water tight.

SAFETY

safety for the operator. Machine safety is ensured on three levels. All mechanic moving parts are inside closed casings, thus it is almost impossible to touch them. Each door is con-trolled by electronic systems. The management software guides and monitors the operator at all stages so that he can-not do any mistakes.

2. WHAT IS ORIgAMI 4?Origami 4 is the production plant pat-ented and manufactured by Personal Factory: a unique and totally innovative production technology. Origami 4, in only 6 square meters, saves raw mate-rials, doses them, mixes then with the chemical compound, bags it all, tracks the entire production down to a single bag, makes sure there are no errors in the production and keeps the platform product certification.

ment and selected aggregates. We do the rest.

6. CAN I DO RESEARCH?Yes. becoming part of the Personal Factory, you have experienced labora-tories that work constantly to support the Origami 4 user to develop products according to specific requirements of Personal Factory's customer, which can create new types of chemicals for construction or improve or customize existing products. The Origami 4 plant is actually a factory for the production of chemicals for construction and therefore those who enter in the Personal Factory have a broad zone of exclusivity and territo-rial autonomy, where other Origami 4 plants will not be installed.

10. WHAT IS IN IT FOR ME TO BE-COME PART OF A NETWORK?For a small producer discon-nected from a network, to pro-duce products with a complex formula is impossible to manage. Take the case of PAvIMIx formula: it involves about 20 chemical com-pounds, most of which have a dose between 50 and 200 grams per 100 kg of finished product. To handle this compound you must have commercial relations with 9 states (switzerland, Mexico, Netherlands, China, Japan, Germany, Italy, spain, UsA) in different curren-

cies. Often a minimum order varies from 1,000 kg to 30,000 kg of products that are very expensive. some of these components can not be used alone, but require treatments as micronization or surface treatment, or pre-mixing with each other. THE COMPANY

Due to the impos-sibility of getting on the market materials elaborate and com-plex enough for these applications, the first microproduction plant is born, starting with mixtures of max. 100 kg containing tens of different additives, i.e., the first IsOLMIx range. The operation of this first plant is ba-sically manual.

The microproduction system becomes an entire plant. N.T.C. (Nuove Tecnologie del Cemento) is founded. It is the most impor-tant existing micro-production plant, its extreme standards become economically accessible to all com-panies, it is possible to produce our com-plex products to an accessible price.

N.T.C. begins produc-tion operations. C.I.T. is turned into a com-pany only focused on research. The first nanometric additives for control of efflores-cences are developed.

Thanks to the inno-vation degree of the project, funds of the European Union for innovation (PIA) are granted. Research workers are employed for studying the sys-tem and the first work-ing prototype ORIGAMI 2 with the first soft-ware platform ORIGA-MI CONTROL 1.0 are developed.

From the work of Gi-useppe Tassone’s son, Francesco, and from a cooperation with the University of Trento the Personal Factory project is born. The first microplant sys-tem is modelled.

We can supply our chemical kits in-cluding pigment depending on our client’s needs, so that we further sim-plify operations on his plants. With

our services, we offer producers to save on research and development, testing, store management. Thanks to our chemical kits, producers can highly simplify their production pro-cesses, thus improving their produc-tion speed. We put the producer in the position of working with small stock-in-trades. Our production process is directly controlled from our labo-ratories through the internet. Triple control procedures make in practice impossible a human mistake. The flexibility grade and speed with which our automated machines can change product make in practice convenient the production of any quantity. In case

our business partners should need it, we can supply a personalized web interface with which our laboratories can control the formulation process without any intermediations. The web interface can send the price of the re-quested kit in just a few seconds; be-ing all this part of our production plat-form, the new formula can be used for production in just a few minutes.

It allows to researchers that are kilometers apart or that have different shifts to work on the same project without duplicating tests and it allows to automatically ar-chive all the work in an interpretable way. We are mainly a research company investing almost 50% of its resourc-es in research and development. We have one of the most advanced re-search centres for the study of mate-rials in Italy.

A REAL STUDY CASE: THE BOWL LAW.

In order to ensure durability and quality of our prod-ucts, we start from a revolutionary and highly scientific approach. Rather than starting from an arid laboratory test, we start from a statistical analysis of the depend-ability of our products. That is, the bowl law. Despite its good performance, a product is never 100% dependable; its performance rather draws a curve in the graphic beside. The curve shows that in the starting phase of life cycle of all products the chances of having troubles is high. This is mainly caused by problems during laying activities, manufacturing or storing faults, etc. After a phase of very perfect dependability, we notice that the chance that problems arise rapidly increases. This phase is characterized by increasing “ruptures caused by wear”. All products by N.T.C. are developed considering this statistics: they are shaped to guaran-tee a higher successful degree of the job to be done even if their nominal performance is similar to that of other products available on the market. As shown in the graphic above, our range of products is shaped to

reach the best possible curve of the “bowl”.

ECOLOGY

THANks TO OUR sYsTEM, WE ARE AbLE TO REDUCE bY 95% TRANsPORT ON LONG DIsTANCEs. THUs, ON THE AvERAGE sHIPMENTs FROM THE PARENT COMPANY ARE LEss THAN 5%.

Our laboratories and all our offices are located in passive buildings, that is, buildings with energy requirement near zero and that were built using natural materials. In order to com-pensate internal thermical supply and season peaks, we use geothermal and solar power. 80% of light we need is natural light, and the rest comes from energy saving lamps.

All our products are products in water dispersion for two main reasons: be-cause water dilution products have a very low environmental impact in com-

parison to solvents and because water is available on all markets on which we operate. That is why all our water di-lution products are sold dry. This way we can further reduce the quantity of material to be transported on long dis-tances.

The ECEs disciplinary rules, which are applied in our company, binds us to a production policy focused on the high-est dosing precision and recycling of subproducts. This way we have been able to obtain a production cycle with no wastes.

We only print on paper using digital solid wax systems with zero wastes (no toner that has to be eliminated in the end), with no emissions of volatile substances, and that enable us to print only what we really need.

Our company policy implies an attempt to reduce to the minimum packaging, which is always less than 0.5% of the packed product, to facilitate its reuse, and to only use easily recyclable ma-terials, such as paper, carton, and PE. The reduction of packaging also re-duces the material to be transported.

Only 250 W for each pack of final product. Our ORIGAMI 4 needs less than 5kW in any operating conditions. This means less energy waste. Hav-ing no mechanic parts that need to be cleaned, it enables us to highly reduce material waste, which however is non contaminated material and can be used as a sample or be packed for sell-ing in case of accumulation of greater quantities.

Last year, we've installed a photovol-taic system, which should be able to produce more energy than we need, so that we can compensate a good part of emissions caused by few transports.We work actively with our business partners in order to improve their en-

IL PRODOTTOOrigami 4La Personal Factory srl propone alla vendita l’impianto ORIGAMI 4 che può produrre prodotti premiscelati per l’edilizia, utilizzando le materie prime disponibili in loco e il kit chimico, fornito anch’esso dalla Personal Factory. L’impianto funziona esclusivamente con le buste di chimica Personal Factory. Con l’impianto, il cliente acquisisce inoltre gli aggiornamenti al software Origami Control e l’assistenza telefonica gratuita a vita, il mantenimento della piattaforma di tracciabilità a vita, lo sviluppo di kit chimici gratuito per prodotti speciali a vita, la vendita e l’assistenza per kit chimici a vita. Il processo produttivo è controllato direttamente dal laboratorio attraverso internet. Delle procedure a triplo controllo rendono di fatto impossibile l’errore umano. La flessibilità e la velocità con cui le nostre macchine computerizzate riescono a cambiare tipologia di prodotto rendono di fatto conveniente la produzione di qualsiasi quantitativo.

L’IMPRENDITOREFRANCESCO TASSONE31 anni, laurea in Ingegneria a Trento e esperienza all’estero. È amministratore unico della Personal Factory. Nel 2006, riceve fondi europei high tech del ministero italiano dello Sviluppo Industriale. Nel 2007, viene selezionato per partecipare all’European Venture Contest, la più importante competizione per le aziende high tech in Europa. Nel 2009, conclude la prima operazione di Venture Capital nel Sud Italia, con i fondi VERTIS SGR e FONDAMENTA SGR. Nel 2010, viene selezionato dal ministero italiano per rappresentare l’eccellenza tecnologica italiana e porta lo stabilimento Origami 4 all’EXPO Universale di Shanghai.

L’IMPRENDITOREEraclio Serino, Antonello Saccomanno, Emilio Frusciante, Francesco Cioffi e Giuseppe del Vecchio. Vendere sabbia asciutta nel deserto libico. Caso pratico reale, per produrre una malta, colla etc. oggi funziona così: prendere sabbia da una cava in Italia 70%. Portarla per l’essiccazione (bruciando del gas) a Parma. Portare il tutto a Sassuolo, miscelarlo con del cemento 29% che è stato trasportato in fabbrica ed aggiungere l’1% di chimica. MILANO, 4 dicembre (Reuters) - I fondi di venture capital Vertis eTTVenture hanno acquisito il 40% del capitale di Personal Factory per 1,3milioni di euro.

Personal Factory, si legge in un comunicato, è una start-up di Simbario(Vibo Valentia), che ha ideato un sistema digitalizzato per produrre malteper l'edilizia.

Vertis e TTVenture hanno acquisito il 20% del capitale a testa.

Per Vertis si tratta del primo investimento effettuato con i fondi messi adisposizione dal dipartimento per l'innovazione e le tecnologie dellapresidenza del Consiglio dei ministri.

Il Comitato di gestione del Fondo digaranzia per le Pmi approva l'adozionedi nuovi criteri di valutazione delle im-prese beneficiarie. Lo rende noto il mi-nistero per lo Sviluppo economico,spiegando che i parametri sono carat-terizzati da una maggiore flessibilità eapertura alle aziende e una velocizza-zione delle procedure di ammissione.Tra le novità approvate, l'ampliamen-to dell'accesso alle procedure sempli-ficate e l'aumento dell'importo massi-mo ammissibile alla procedura di mi-crocredito da 75mila a 100mila euro.“Dopo dieci anni si cambiano i criteriper l'accesso al Fondo. Si tratta di unariforma storica: più imprese potrannoaccedere a questo strumento così im-portante soprattutto in questa delica-ta fase di ripresa economica. E' la pri-

Confermate le condizioni contenute nella convenzioneCdp-Abi, siglata alla fine dello scorso maggio e relativa alla nuova operativitàbancaria di finanziamento delle Pmi con provvista Cdp, grazie alle quali la Cassaha messo a disposizione delle banche complessivamente 8 miliardi di euro.
