Inductors for Telecommunications
The race on the digital information highway is already underway. Growing data traffic volumes aredemanding increasingly higher transmission rates. And multimedia services, such as radio and tele-vision on the Internet, audio and video streaming, videoconferencing, video-on-demand, e-com-merce, etc. require data speeds that far outstrip the rates used by analog technology. Only digitaltransmission technologies can rise to the occasion. Demands for improved circuit design and soft-ware are being accompanied by calls for advanced components. And as long as transmissionroutes use copper lines, this is particularly relevant for inductive components. Such components areessential if transmission quality levels and existing EMC, personal safety and device protectionguidelines are to be observed.
The first step on the road to digitalization was the introduction of ISDN (Integrated Services DigitalNetwork). The worldwide standardization of ISDN means that interfaces, and thereby interfacetransformers, are clearly defined. Transformers and chokes are used with the interfaces

Essentially, the transformer is defined by the chip set used. EPCOS provides interface transformersfor the leading semiconductor manufacturers.
The next stage in the digital race brings us to DSL (Digital Subscriber Line). The term xDSL is usedto refer to the various technologies that increase bandwidth levels on existing copper lines.
These technologies also require interface transformers tailored to suit specific semiconductor chips.And EPCOS provides the standard model. Some of the xDSL technologies (e.g. ADSL, SDSL) alsouse a passive splitter to separate telephone and data signals. Since the interfaces for this filter havenot yet been standardized, EPCOS mainly develops the inductive components for this splitter on acustomer-specific basis.
