Contact QUT Contract Manager for further information or clarification on details contained within this induction document.

ACCESS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Confirm your intended arrangements with your Contract Manager so building access can be arranged.

At times, work needs to be done in occupied areas, or areas adjacent to areas where staff, students, and others continue to work or study. If the planned work may impact others (e.g. noise, dust, vibration, odours), you must liaise with the QUT Contract Manager before starting. They determine if the work can safely proceed or alternative arrangements are required (i.e. schedule out of hours).

ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND FATIGUE

No one is to work while under the influence of alcohol or non-prescription drugs, or if impaired by extreme fatigue. Where it is observed that alcohol or drugs may be affecting the capacity of a consultant or contractor, the person will be directed to stop work immediately. The matter will be referred to QUT management for appropriate follow-up.

ANIMALS - DOMESTIC OR NATIVE

Do not bring domestic animals, including dogs and cats, onto university grounds. Assistance dogs accompanying people with disabilities are permitted. Do not feed native animals or birds.

BEHAVIOUR ON CAMPUS

Offensive behaviour, language, or harassment of any type, is not acceptable under any situation at QUT. This includes unsolicited remarks of a sexual nature or behaviour that reinforces inappropriate, demeaning or discriminatory attitudes or assumptions about persons, based on age, race, gender, pregnancy, parental status, sexual orientation, transgender status, marital status, trade union activity, disability or medical condition.

CHILDREN ON CAMPUS

Consultants and contractors must not bring children on to university sites while performing work. Work experience students must be fully supervised at all times by the consultant and contractor.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

QUT has established emergency processes to prepare for, and respond to an emergency.

Wardens are located in all QUT buildings, and are identified in an emergency by wearing a red or white coloured helmet and yellow vest. In an emergency or drill, you are required to follow their instructions, along with QUT Security Officers and emergency personnel.

Familiarise yourself with the following which are located in all QUT buildings:

• Evacuation signs detail the evacuation routes, exits, and assembly points

• Manual Call Points (commonly called Break Glass Box) which allow occupants to raise an alarm in case of an emergency.

• Fire extinguishers. While the priority is for personal safety, firefighting equipment can be used if you are competent, and if safe to do so.

• FIRE DETECTION EQUIPMENT OR SYSTEMS MUST NOT BE ISOLATED BY CONTRACTORS – LIAISE WITH YOUR CONTRACT MANAGER.

EMERGENCY - WHAT TO DO

At QUT, there are two standard responses in an emergency:

SHELTER IN PLACE: Wardens will advise when it is safer to stay inside the building during an emergency situation (e.g. weather event). You should stay calm, remain inside the building, and you will be advised when the emergency has passed.

EVACUATION: In most QUT buildings, audible alarms will sound (otherwise wardens will direct as required), with two distinct tones:

1 ALERT TONE: BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. Stop your activities, turn off equipment, and prepare to be evacuated. Do not leave until advised.

2. EVACUATE TONE: WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP. Immediately evacuate the building via the signed exits, proceed to the nominated assembly area, and follow instructions of Wardens, QUT Security and emergency personnel.

INCIDENT AND HAZARD REPORTING

If you identify a hazard or situation which may impact the safety of yourself or others, please notify your QUT Contract Manager. Any incident involving university staff, students, visitors, contractors, consultants and members of the public, causes damage to university property, or causes environmental damage or pollution, must be reported to your QUT Contract Manager immediately.

LABORATORY AND TECHNICAL SPACES

Laboratories contain substances which may be explosive, flammable, carcinogenic, toxic, or have harmful health effects. In addition, some laboratories, clinics or research facilities contain lasers, strong electro-magnetic fields, radioactive material and various biohazards.

Before starting work in these areas, your QUT Contract Manager must arrange a specific induction or instructions for entry and work. Do not enter any laboratory or technical facility without proper authorisation.

SAFE SYSTEMS OF WORK

QUT is open to staff, students and the general public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Public safety and security needs to be ensured when conducting work.

Consultants and contractors are responsible for identifying the hazards and manage the risks associated with their work performed on QUT premises. Work is to be undertaken using a safe system of work, in accordance with the risk management process and relevant legislative requirements.

Consultants and contractors must ensure all workers are appropriately trained and competent to do their tasks. Equipment used on QUT premises must meet the relevant standard, be registered, maintained, tested and used in accordance with manufacturers and applicable statutory requirements. Work places must be left tidy and consultants and contractors must arrange removal of all waste they generate from site themselves.

SIGNAGE

Safety signs are displayed around the university to notify people of safety hazards, provide safety information, and in particular, identify specific risk areas or activities.

SMOKE-FREE QUT

Smoking is prohibited on all QUT premises. Smokers are required to follow directions given by QUT staff and security personnel regarding the University’s smoke-free policy.

VEHICLES ON CAMPUS

Staff and students move around our campuses across the day. Limit your vehicle speed when on campus to 10km/hr, and be prepared for the unexpected.

Parking is limited on university campuses. When parked on campus all consultant and contractor vehicles must display a current valid parking permit on the dashboard.
