On April 19, 1940, the First Inter-American Congress of Indian Life was held in Mi-
choacán, Mexico, summoned
by the then Mexican President,
Lázaro Cárdenas. It was pro-
posed to celebrate Indigenous
People’s Day in the Americas on
this date "in tribute to the first
assembly in which the Indige-
nous took direct intervention
in the discussion of their prob-
lems," with the aim of perpet-
uating and highlighting the im-
portance of the native peoples
of the Americas, who imprinted
the first cultural features of our
history on the continent.
Countries of the Pan Amer-
ican Union attended this meet-
ing with representatives of vari-
ous native tribes and chieftains
of indigenous cultures across
the continent to analyze their
current situation and build a
common front. This meeting
had as its main objective to
fin a way to overcome these
groups’ marginalization. As a
result, the Inter-American In-
dian Institute was created in
1942, which reports to the Or-
ganization of American States.
The institute’s function is to
coordinate the indigenous poli-
cy on the continent.
