April 2020 • Bulletin 67 O n April 19, 1940, the First Inter-American Congress of Indian Life was held in Mi- choacán, Mexico, summoned by the then Mexican President, Lázaro Cárdenas. It was pro- posed to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day in the Americas on this date "in tribute to the first assembly in which the Indige- nous took direct intervention in the discussion of their prob- lems," with the aim of perpet- uating and highlighting the im- portance of the native peoples of the Americas, who imprinted the first cultural features of our history on the continent. Countries of the Pan Amer- ican Union attended this meet- ing with representatives of vari- ous native tribes and chieftains of indigenous cultures across the continent to analyze their current situation and build a common front. This meeting had as its main objective to fin a way to overcome these groups’ marginalization. As a result, the Inter-American In- dian Institute was created in 1942, which reports to the Or- ganization of American States. The institute’s function is to coordinate the indigenous poli- cy on the continent. We invite you to refer to the Atlas Histórico de América, Pueb- los Originarios, coordinated by Mtro.
