INDIANA SOUTH INDIANA SOUTH WESLEYAN MARCH 2009 I have been thinking for awhile of the need for our district to have its own mis- sion statement. Within the past few years it has been in vogue for organizations to write a statement to indicate what their focus is and what they are all about as church, college, or a company. Sometimes individuals or families have mission statements that they write to give direction for things they want to accomplish in life. Some mission statements I have read are too long and cumbersome and no one can ever remember them. Of course, others are to the point and really give direct fo- cus to what the person, family, or organization plans to accomplish in the days ahead. At our International Center I often hear this phrase: “We desire to do the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment.” I like this short but yet com- prehensive goal The Wesleyan Church has to impact the world for Christ. Another mission statement I read that gives great direction is the one Indiana Wesleyan University has adopted. It is, “Indiana Wesleyan University is a Christ-cen- tered academic community committed to changing the world by developing students in charac- ter, scholarship and leadership.” There was a lot of effort that went into constructing this statement. WESLEYANMARCH 2009

I have been thinking for awhile of the need for our district to have its own mis-

sion statement. Within the past few years it has been in vogue for organizations to

write a statement to indicate what their focus is and what they are all about as

church, college, or a company. Sometimes individuals or families have mission

statements that they write to give direction for things they want to accomplish in life.

Some mission statements I have read are too long and cumbersome and no one

can ever remember them. Of course, others are to the point and really give direct fo-

cus to what the person, family, or organization plans to accomplish in the days ahead.

At our International Center I often hear this phrase: “We desire to do the Great

Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment.” I like this short but yet com-

prehensive goal The Wesleyan Church has to impact the world for Christ.

Another mission statement I read that gives great direction is the one Indiana

Wesleyan University has adopted. It is, “Indiana Wesleyan University is a Christ-cen-

tered academic community committed to changing the world by developing students in charac-

ter, scholarship and leadership.” There was a lot of effort that went into constructing

this statement. This mission focus is the driving philosophy of I.W.U. and every

major decision is made in the light of these 22 words stated above.

With that being said, I want to introduce our own mission statement here in

the Indiana South Wesleyan District. When it is all said and done what should

every church in this district be doing? What is the primary focus that would be

the most pleasing to God and help our churches be healthy, growing, vibrant

places of worship where sinners would get saved and believers would get sancti-

fied? One day God impressed upon me that this district should be a district of

Love Mercy ’09December 28-31, 2009 — Louisville, KY

Three intense days of powerful speakers, artists and community focused

on pursuing God’s call for their lives and expressing worship for our Savior

Jesus Christ. These Wesleyan Youth Conventions seek to bring the simple

truth that God’s Word challenges us to face the needs of our world by asking

us do these three things. Embracing Micah 6:8 helps settle the dust and the

noise from the world and turns our focus toward the important…the eternal.

Love Mercy ’09 will be a catapult launching students out to live for God in

their schools and in their communities. You’re invited to be a key player in

seeing a generation become all that God desires and empowers them to be.

Medora WesleyanPastor Skip Breeden & the Medora

Wesleyan Church re-sided and put a new

roof on their church. We recently re-

ceived a letter from Becky Padgett that at-

tended Medora Wesleyan for a VBS when

she was a little girl, and is now the youth

director at Orleans UMC. She remem-

bered that at the end of the week, there

was an altar call. She said, “I remember cry-

ing, not because I was sad, but joyful. That is when I gave my life to Christ and received

the Holy Spirit, at the young age of 8 or 10. To this day, I have a great love of VBS and

believe now that has to do with the start at your church. So, I again say thank you for

planting the seed in a little girl who has grown up loving the Lord. Keep planting. Jesus

will keep the living water coming.” We may never know the influence that VBS

has on children until years later. Keep up the good work Medora!

SympathyRev. Delbert Murphy, pastor of Birdseye Wesleyan,

went to be with the Lord on January 23, 2009. Please pray

for Mary and the rest of the family during this difficult

time. He had been a pastor for 29 years with 11 of those

years at Birdseye. One of the things we will miss is the Fish

Fry that Pastor Delbert used to do during camp.

Mr. & Mrs. Dale Hayhurst recentlycelebrated their 50th Wedding Anni-versary. Mr. Hayhurst served 21 yearsas the District Treasurer. May Godbless him and Betty Jo with manymore years together.

Pictured above is the team from thedistrict that recently went to Panamato work. Thanks to everyone that wentto make a difference in Panama. Be-cause of a matching gift effort and thegenerosity of the churches in our dis-trict, we were able to send $9,000.00with them to Panama to advance thework of the Lord.

Easter OfferingEvangelism & Church Growth is highly dependent on this yearly offering to

provide the majority of our programming funds. These funds are critical in our

ability to effectively fulfill our mission of multiplying disciples, leaders and

churches in order to fulfill the Great Commission in the spirit of the

Great Commandment. Through this offering we are able to provide a variety

of resources to equip and empower leaders and churches for the missional

multiplication movement (M3).

The annual Easter Offering is the “life’s blood” for Wesleyan North Ameri-

can missions. The funds collected here make a huge difference. This offering

does not have to be taken on Easter Sunday. It can be collected at whatever time

and whatever manner best fits your local setting. We simply want to thank you

in advance for what you will do to expand God’s Kingdom through this vital in-

vestment.
