Our annual picnic is on August 13 at Woodland Park in Portage. Please sign up so we have a head count for chicken. Remember to hand out those handle bar hangers when- ever you get a chance. Think Differently Thoughts create feelings; feelings cre-ate actions; actions create outcomes. In other words, how you think affects how you feel; how you feel dictates how you act; and what you do is what you get. So, if you want to change your life or any part of it, first change your thinking. To take the company to the next level, Paul O‘Neill, former CEO of aluminum manufacturing giant Alcoa didn‘t focus on advertising and marketing, or research and development. He focused on safety, reducing days lost to work-place injury by 90 percent. Within a year the company‘s profits hit a record high. When O‘Neill retired, profits were five times higher. O‘Neill says, ―I knew I had to transform Alcoa. But you can‘t order people to change. So I decided I was going to start by focusing on one thing. If I could start disrupting the habits around one thing, it would spread throughout the entire company.‖ On the surface, they‘re unrelated: profit margins and workplace safety. But success-ful people have the ability to see the relationship between the ‗unrelated.‘ Our thinking is often compartmentalized. That keeps things neat, linear and logical but builds walls we cannot see through. Successful people always look for connections and relation-ships. Their thinking is not just linear, but holistic. They don‘t just study parts, but see the whole. Ask questions to connect the dots and see the whole picture The first way to change our thinking is to fo-cus on connecting the dots--the universal law of cause and effect. Everything is connected if we just look for it. Remember in Lead Like You Ride we says, ―You see what you look for.‖ Don‘t look at or for what is the obvious answer or solution. No matter what area of leadership or life there is a deeper cause and effect to everything. The best and easiest way to do this is to ‗ask questions‘. Don‘t think or assume you know. Put your own thoughts aside and ask.

Memory Loss

First of all let me just remind everyone to keep an eye out for traffic. The latest trend seems to be opposing traffic driving in your lane. I can’t count how many times this has hap-pened to me in the last few months. Last week, on my way to work, I had this happen 4 times in one day. Whether it’s from people thinking their vehicle is wider that it is or they can’t keep their eyes off their phones, or in one case, the lady was staring right at me while straddling the center line in a full size pick up. She even turned her head and stared at me as she went by. Poor driving skills just seem to be increasing and we need to be even more vigilant.

Next I would like to talk about something that I have heard from several people this year. The last was on the dinner ride to Cedar Lake last week to Harry O’s with Ron and Joe Ann, Beth and myself. We were talking on the radio when the subject of needing more practice on the Goldwing came up and we both agreed that we could use some.

You could be taken to a firing range and taught how to fire a weapon. Breathing and trigger control. The proper way to hold and handle a firearm, but without repetition, you won’t hit the target consistently. If you took flying lessons from an ace pilot, he will teach you how to fly like and ace, but without actually flying, you would most likely crash the first time up. The same goes with riding your motorcycle. You can take all the classes in the world, but if you don’t get out there and actually put what you learned to the test, you won’t be an accomplished rider.

All practice does is form muscle memory. It trains your body into doing what you want it to do without you having to think about it. The reason we go out in the spring and practice in a parking lot is to gain back some of the muscle memory that your body forgot over the winter. You haven’t lost the knowledge it’s just that your body forgot what it needs to do. All it takes is a short time to lose those motor skills that you had. Most of us don’t ride the Wing every day. We get out 2 or 3 times a month and even though we do fine, the skill level just isn’t there. Even though I ride almost every day, it’s not on my Goldwing and Beth suffers because of that. I’m not as smooth as I should be on this particular bike.

So the next time that you are heading out, take the bike instead of the car. Riding sea-son is too short as it is anyway and what better way to get around than on your bike. As far as your other memory goes, you might forget where you are going, but at least you’ll be on your motorcycle. Get out and ride and be safe.
