I wish you a warm welcome to our Gala Presentation evening celebrating World Travel Awards – Indian Ocean, a first for the Region and part of our Grand Tour that spans six continents and 9,000 nominees.

This evening is our first ceremony in the glorious Maldives, a world-renowned luxury destination that continues to raise the bar in so many aspects of travel and hospitality. Regarded as a “must do” destination for every traveller, it actively preserves its culture and natural beauty.

World Travel Awards celebrates its 20th year in 2013 and it is an honour that, in this special year for us as the “Oscars of the Travel Industry”, we bring the ceremony for the Indian Ocean region to the Maldives.

We are proud to be hosting World Travel Awards in Maldives. On behalf of the tourism industry and the government of Maldives, it gives me immense pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the delegates of World Travel Awards to the Sunny Side of Life.

It is indeed an honour to be hosting a prestigious event of this level for the first time, which also coincides with the milestone 20th anniversary of World Travel Awards as well as the 40th year of tourism in the Maldives. Hosting of the event in the Maldives is an assurance to the travel trade that Maldives is ready for event-based tourism in a luxury and private setting.

This year Maldives has had a record number of tourist arrivals in February 2013, passing 100,000 arrivals in a month for the first time. The month of March recorded a growth of 30.1 percent compared to the same period in 2012.

The record number of arrivals comes at a time when the Fourth Tourism Master Plan is being formulated and ready to be launched. The Fourth Tourism Master Plan will guide the tourism development for the next five years. In the meantime, two international airports

have been opened in February which includes Hanimaadhoo International Airport located in the North of Maldives and Maamigili International Airport in Central Maldives, which increased the number of international airports to four. In addition, three new domestic airports came into operation which brings the total of domestic airports to five. Additional domestic airports are at various stages of development. Such infrastructure will increase visitor experience in Maldives and pave way for new market segments.

Tourism, which began as an unplanned activity in 1972, is the lifeline of the Maldives economy. As we celebrate 40 years of tourism, 108 exclusive resorts, 19 Hotels, 81 Guest Houses and 160 Safari Vessels/Liveaboards with 28,392 beds have been developed which constitute a billion dollar industry. Tourism contributes approximately 35 percent to the GDP.

Among the many world-leading hotels scheduled to open across the Indian Ocean in the coming months is Centara Hudhufushi Resort & Spa, which is set to become the third property in the Maldives from the brand when it opens in late 2014. Centara Hudhufushi is currently in the design phase following the signing of a management contract with Maldivian company RPI Private earlier this year. The resort, which is being developed at a cost of $36 million, will have approximately 110 rooms and will be located on the east side of Lhaviyani Atoll, 25 minutes by seaplane

from Male International Airport. “We are very much looking forward to the opening of Centara Hudhufushi Resort & Spa, which will be our third resort in the Maldives,” said Thirayuth Chirathivat, chief executive, Centara Hotels & Resorts.

Also in the Maldives, HPL Hotels & Resorts, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Hotel Properties and operator of hospitality establishments throughout the Asia-Pacific region, has confirmed it has taken over management of Soneva Gili, Maldives. Assuring fans of the

resort it will be “business as usual”, HPL was quick to emphasise its plans are restricted to re-branding it as Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives and minor enhancements going forward. “Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives will complement the current HPL portfolio of hotels,” said Stephen Lau, chairman, HPL Hotels & Resorts. “We intend to keep the spirit of the resort accordingly; guests booked after the change in management can be assured that the terms and conditions of their reservations will remain unchanged. And the Gili Lankanfushi team looks forward to welcoming them



to our island paradise in the Maldives.” Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives is positioned as an upmarket boutique resort that stands at the forefront of the eco-luxury sector and acts as a benchmark for luxury resorts.

In Mauritius, Coco Collection has announced the addition of Sankhara Villas to its portfolio of luxury resorts. Sankhara Villas by Coco Collection joined the prestigious group on April 1st and is its first venture outside of the Maldives. Situated in the picturesque village of Poste-la-Fayette on the East coast of Mauritius, Sankhara Villas by Coco Collection offers discerning travellers an authentic haven of tranquillity in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations. Nestled on almost an acre of lush private gardens, the beachfront property comprises of

two luxurious villas, Villa Tiara and Villa Almira. Both feature eclectic Balinese architecture and luxe-living, with each offering unique interior design aspects drawn from different regional references. aIR SeYcHeLLeS Air Seychelles has also been working hard to promote the Indian Ocean as a tourism destination, having linked with Etihad Airways to bring visitors to the

region in early 2012. It is still early days in the relationship, but the deal appears to be paying off. While the airline lost $12.5 million in financial 2011, the Seychelles flag-carrier was able to report net profit of US$1 million last year, its first profitable year since 2007. With passenger numbers also on an upward trajectory, the growth of Air Seychelles is set to become a major boon for tourism in the Indian Ocean in the coming years.

NEW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS OPEN NEW GATEWAYS IN MALDIVES

Maldives is an archipelago of 1,190 islands scattered across the equator in the Indian Ocean. Beautiful beaches, colourful underwater world in a unique geographic setting is the ideal setting for the ultimate holiday destination.

Tourism, which began as an unplanned activity in 1972, is the lifeline of the Maldives economy. As the nation celebrates 40 years of tourism, 108 exclusive resorts with over 22,000 beds have been developed which constitute a billion dollar industry. Presence of famous international hotel chains have positioned the Maldives as must visit destination.

To match the world class product, the Maldives is moving full swing in developing its infrastructure, which is crucial in enhancing the tourist experience. In order to ease the challenges faced to travel between the islands, many airports have been developed.

Currently there are four international airports of which two became international in February 2013: Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (the main airport near the capital Male’); Gan International Airport (Addu Atoll, in the South); Hanimadhoo International Airport (Haa

Dhaalu Atoll, in the North, Opened in February 2013); and Maamigili International Airport (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, Central Maldives, opened in February 2013).

In addition to four international airports there are five domestic airports in operation, Kooddoo (Gaafu Alifu Atioll), Kadhdhoo (Laamu Atoll), Dharavandhoo (Baa Atoll), Kaadedhdhoo (Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Fuvahmulah (Gnaviyani Atoll). The 4th Tourism Master of Maldives encourages regional development of tourism. These new airports will act as hubs of the regional development.

New airports will not only increase accessibility for potential tourists to come, but will also increase the ripple effect of the tourism dollar to the surrounding local island communities by generating job opportunities, infrastructure development and other benefits.

All development is being undertaken by giving careful consideration to the sustenance of the natural environment and following strict regulatory measures. An environmental impact assessment needs to be undertaken and approved by the relevant government authority

before any development can take place. For resort island development, only 30 percent of the land area of a given island should be developed, no building should be higher than the tallest palm, each resort must house a self-contained sewage disposal system and an incineration facility for waste. Adaptation of sustainable tourism development is the key to the success of tourism in the Maldives we continue to enjoy today. Looking at the past months, 2012 was a year of many challenges for the tourism

industry. The global economic situation overshadowed by the Eurozone crisis in particular impacted the Maldives tourism, especially so because of its heavy dependency on the European market. Nevertheless, the rising tourism demand, and the versatility and resilience of the tourism business together with the continued effort of industry partners, the nation’s tourism industry closed on a rather promising note last year. The Maldives welcomed a new record number of 958,027 visitors in 2012. With direct access from the nearly all the gates from the GCC countries, arrivals



from the Middle East region have contributed nearly a 50 percent growth in 2012 with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait leading the region as potential markets for the Maldives. For potential investors the Maldives offers the opportunity to invest in a stable environment that has seen 40 years of sustained growth with attractive returns.

tRue LOVeAway from the glitz of this evening’s World Travel Awards ceremony, there is so much else to discover on the islands – perhaps most famously the honeymoon offering. If a honeymoon is meant to be a celebration of love in an intimate, secluded, and most importantly, beautiful setting, then the Maldives is the world’s best backdrop for all these things.

There are endless ways to let the magic of the islands dazzle while on holiday as a couple. A dinner under the stars with the occasional flicker of candle light to bring you back into the real world, a daring getaway to a nearby uninhabited island all by yourselves for the whole day, or just lazing around in your private bungalow watching the endless turquoise waters while you are treated to an spa treatment in the room.

cuLtuRaL BReakSThe islands of Maldives appear in-between the trading route of the Indian Ocean. Thus settlers and visitors from neighbouring regions and around the world have come in contact with the islands for as long as history has been recorded. Such is the to-and-fro flow of people and their cultures, that a marked effect has been left in the Maldivian

people, the language, beliefs, arts, and attitudes.

The looks of the Maldivian people may differ from one atoll to the other, attributing to the genes passed on by South and Southeast Asians, Africans, and Arabians. The language, Dhivehi, differs in dialect in some regions in the south of Maldives, possibly due to the secluded nature and subsistent ways of island life. Maldivian beliefs have been very much based around religion and superstition, often used together in matters of significance but given separate positions in society.

In matters of faith, Islam dominates, but influence of the supernatural still continues to play a major role in most island communities, possibly giving credit to the folklores and Buddhist



traditions of the islands’ first settlers before conversion to Islam in 1153 AD. The mixing of cultures is very much seen in Maldivian arts. The music played with the local bodu-beru (big-drum) resemble that of African drumming. The dhoni (a unique Maldivian sailboat) is an art form itself built with skilled craftsmanship, with significant similarities to the Arabian dows.

dIVInG HOLIdaYS The warm seas of Maldives have high visibility throughout the year, with water clear enough to see the passing fish as far as fifty metres away at times. Add to that the marvellous formation of over 3,000 coral reefs and the free flowing tides of the monsoons. The result of these perfect conditions have created one of the world’s richest diving coral reef areas.

Over a thousand species of fish and other underwater creatures inhabit the Maldivian waters. The monsoon tides of the Indian Ocean create a collection of small marine creatures as well as microscopic plant cells. This in turn creates a hub for all kinds of underwater species who gather in these waters lured by the abundance of food. In the Maldives you will get to see everything. From tiny shrimp and groups of colourful swimmers to the magnificent mantas and sharks, a careful eye will give you enough to enrapture you for a lifetime.
