When we book holidays we aim for paradiseon every front: perfect weather, magnificentattractions, rich culture and sumptuoushospitality. Egypt, and Sharm el Sheikh inparticular, offer this magic formula, and I amdeeply honoured that World Travel Awards ishosting its first ever ceremony in thisincredible corner of Africa.

Our timing is also more than coincidental.Egypt is entering an exciting new dawn ofhope and opportunity. And by attracting thetravel industry elite to Sharm el Sheikh forour awards, we aim to showcase not only itsworld-class attractions and facilities but howtourism is serving as a force for good and acatalyst for change.

Meanwhile the goodwill of the 2010 FifaWorld Cup is continuing to reverberateacross Sub-Saharan Africa, which is enjoyingone of the highest tourism growth rates inthe world at 8 percent for 2011, accordingto the UNWTO.

This year is already shaping up to be themost ambitious yet in the 18-year history ofWorld Travel Awards. I am pleased to reportthat the number of organisations nominatedfor the “Oscars of the Travel Industry” hasrisen 13 percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile the number of voters is up 11percent year-on-year, driven by a surge inconsumer voting. This reflects how thepublic now rely increasingly on World TravelAwards as their gold seal of travel excellence.

Winning a World Travel Award is the ultimatetravel accolade, with the endorsement ofover 213,000 voting travel professionalsdemonstrating to both the travel industryand the travel consumer that your brandstands in a class of its very own.

I wish to extend a special thank you to ourevent partners Savoy el Sheikh, Soho Squareand weclickmedia, as well as our mediapartners Magic 105.4, eTurboNews,TravelDailyNews, Passport Magazine andBreaking Travel News.

Honouring and promoting excellence andinnovation in travel and tourism are why weare gathered all here. Thank you for joiningus on this very special occasion, andcongratulations for your incredibleachievements.

A record 49.4 million visitors arrivedlast year, according to figures from theUnited Nations World TourismOrganisation, generating $32 billion inrevenue.

This growth follows strong increases invisitor numbers in 2009 – making Africathe only continent to record consistentgrowth during the worst of the economicdownturn.

South Africa crowned these achievementsby hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup touniversal acclaim last year. The event sawthousands of sports fan make the journeyfrom around the world ahead of thetournament while also generating a store ofgoodwill which will last a lifetime amongholidaymakers.

Zimbabwe, which recorded 2.2 millionvisitors, was a surprise success story, whileMozambique and Nigeria both saw over amillion guests in 2010.

It is in this positive perspective we mustconsider the recent developments in thenorth of the continent.

While the political changes wrought inTunisia and Egypt have been of monumentalimportance for the people of thosecountries, the impact on tourism has beensurprisingly modest. Key destinationsremain largely unaffected, with the rise oftourism in the region continuing unabated.

As Anissa Ramoundi, UK & Ireland directorfor the Tunisia National Tourism Office, explains: “The tourist resorts were never at

the heart of the protests, and Tunisians inthese areas are looking forward to gettingback to work and making sure our visitorshave a wonderful time.”

Our hosts here in Egypt are a perhaps thebest example of this continued trend, withthe resorts of the Red Sea standing readyto welcome guests from around the worldonce again.

It remains to be seen whether Sharm ElSheikh – winner of Africa's Leading BeachDestination title in 2010 – can retain itstitle tonight and truly illustrate the resolveof the tourism industry here in Egypt.

Spotlight onAfrica & Indian Ocean

During the 1980s African tourism was seen as a niche pursuit, with only a fewhundred thousand hardy travellers making trips to a handful of destinations. As we move into the second half of 2011, nothing could be further from thetruth – with tourism on the continent having truly come of age.

Aviation in Africa

South Africa Airways (SAA) has been abeacon of success for a sometimes troubledaviation sector in Africa.

Winner of the Africa’s Leading Airline awardlast year at the World Travel Awards, the flag-carrier launched a non-stop service betweenJohannesburg and New York in January, whilealso boosting connections through codeshareagreements with TAP Portugal and JetBlueAirways.

Kenya Airways, Royal Air Maroc and AirNamibia join SAA as nominees for title thisevening, making it one of the most fiercelycompetitive categories.

Out in the bush

Back on the ground, it is Mantis Group whichhas been blazing a trail in Africa since WorldTravel Awards was last in town.

In conjunction with Grand Towers the grouplaunched Nigeria’s first luxury Boutique Hotelin Abuja, while Baines’ River Camp, situated inZambia’s Lower Zambezi Valley, and NewYork’s iconic Sherry Netherland Hotel bothjoined the diversifying portfolio of propertieson offer.

Mantis also moved into the luxury servicedapartment segment by introducing TheLawhill Luxury Apartments in Cape Town.

Down in South Africa, The Saxon – which lastyear walked away with the title of SouthAfrica’s Leading Hotel – has been makingimprovements to ensure it wins again this year.

Three Saxon Villas have recently beenintroduced, perfect for those who want five-star hotel service with the privacy andfreedom of staying in their own space.Surrounded by lush gardens planted withindigenous species, with water features forcomplete privacy, the new buildings displaythe best of contemporary architecture, accentuated with natural stone-clad walls, with interiors of great peace and tranquility.

Africa’s Leading Luxury Lodge, ShambalaPrivate Reserve, also in South Africa, has alsobeen investing heavily this year to make sureit stays ahead of the field.

On the road again

In line with tourism around the globe, environmentalism is gaining ground in theAfrican tourism industry, with car rental giantAvis leading the way.

“Since we started our green journey at Avis,we have gained remarkable new insights intoour business, and have been able to makesavings that in the long term will amount tomillions of rand,” said Wayne Duvenage, chiefexecutive of Avis Rent a Car.

Avis is recognised across the industry forextending its sustainability initiatives beyondcarbon offsetting to include a holistic andinnovative approach towards reducing thecompany’s negative impact on theenvironment – from improved water use andenergy reduction to integrated wastemanagement.

Europcar – named as the World's LeadingGreen Transport Solution Company by theWorld Travel Awards – has also been taking itsresponsibilities seriously. For example,Europcar is giving maximum visibility to itsenvironmentally-friendly cars and encouragesconsumers to choose a “greener” car whenmaking reservations. In addition to adding asection dedicated to eco-friendly cars on itsweb site, the Company provides specificinformation about the CO2 emissions of allmodels in its rental car fleet.

African Tourism

From the beach resorts in the north of thecontinent, through the unique safaridestinations sough of the Saharan to themetropolitan sights of Cape Town andJohannesburg in the south, tourism is amongthe most vibrant, innovative and excitinganywhere on earth.

It is this industry we are here to celebratetonight – good luck to all our nominees!

World Islands Awards will take place on the eve on ITB Berlin 2012, withMauritius Tourism Promotion Authoritysigned as the official partner. It is theonly event of its kind dedicated torecognising Island Tourism around the world.

The inaugural ceremony will take place at Hotel Adlon Kempinski, Berlin’s mostexclusive five-star hotel, on 6 March 2012.

The two-year agreement comes hot on the heels of Mauritius being named one of the coolest destinations for 2011 byFuturebrand and British Airways, and beingvoted “World’s Leading Island Destination” at the 2010 World Travel Awards.

Through this partnership, Mauritius willspearhead the drive for the promotion of Island Tourism worldwide, as well asensuring that it remains at the forefront of the luxury tourism map.

The paradise island is currently enjoying a thriving tourism economy under theleadership of Minister of Tourism, HENandcoomar Bodha, and Dr KarlMootoosamy, Director, MauritiusTourism Promotion Authority.

Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, MauritiusTourism Promotion Authority, said: “Our newpartnership with World Island Awards willserve as an excellent vehicle to promote thecore values of Mauritius Tourism PromotionAuthority – in particular our emphasis onpeople, the environment and the capacity to ensure customer satisfaction.”

The Indian Ocean nation – which is bestknown for its azure waters, white beachesand luxury spas – will also showcase itself as a world-class destination to travelprofessionals and media from around the world.

Graham Cooke, Founder, World Island Awards said: “On behalf of World IslandAwards, I am delighted to have MauritiusTourism Promotion Authority as our partner.

“This nation typifies luxury tourism at itsfinest, and serves a benchmark for howisland nations can travel and tourism forsocial and economic betterment.”

The awards will serve to reward excellenceacross all areas of tourism of the world’sisland nations.

Categories will include: “World’s LeadingIsland Resort”, “Asia’s Leading Island Resort”and “World’s Leading Island Destination”.

Over the past thirty years, Mauritius hasexpanded its luxury tourism sector. Thetravel and tourism sector has become morevital than ever to the nation’s economy dueto declining sugar prices and economicinfeasibility of textile production.

Limited space for tourism means thatMauritius continues to promote only elite andspecialist tourism, while budget travel is notencouraged.
