Renovations, upgrades continueon Ocean Star

Following major renovation and upgrades to the Ocean Star’sexterior and outside exhibits, work has moved inside, with several newexhibits and upgrades to existing exhibits in progress. The offshore rigand museum will be better than the day it opened due to the newexhibits and equipment on display.

A renovation reception was held Nov. 11 to recognize and thank thecompanies donating funds and in-kind donations for the OceanStar’s renovation effort. A new wall panel listed those companies whohelped with the renovation.

Among the museum’s upgrades is a new version of the touch screenat the career exhibit, which illustrates a series of offshore workers andpositions. In a new Meet the Crew display, visitors can approach a mirror at the area where they also can dress up like a rig worker. Avideo plays from the reverse side of the mirror so visitors can learn aboutthe different rig crew positions and their responsibilities.

Bristow Group donated a new helicopter for the Ocean Star to replace the original ’copterthat was damaged beyond repair by Hurricane Ike in 2008. The new helicopter is being lifted to the museum’s roof.

Ocean Star NewsOcean Star NewsThe seascape is being renovated to reflect the deep water in which

the industry is working. The fixed platform jacket and an older model ofa semisubmersible have been removed. In their place are new models ofthe Magnolia tension-leg platform (TLP), and a model of ExxonMobil’sKizomba floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel off-shore West Africa. A model of Shell’s Perdido spar will be installed earlyin 2010.

A new part of the marine transportation exhibit on the third flooris an LED display that shows dayrates for several different offshore rigsand vessels, including jackups, semisubmersibles and drillships, supplyboats, tugs and barges. The information is updated at least monthly andmore often, depending upon the particular rig or vessel. The dayratesillustrate to visitors just how expensive some of the equipment used toexplore for and extract offshore oil and gas can be.

A new safety exhibit is progressing, with storyboard options for the display currently being examined. Pride International donated amannequin dressed in full safety gear for the exhibit. The mannequin isalready on display and will become part of the completed exhibit.

OEC is seeking industry safety professionals to work with theexhibit company to bring the storyboard selection to completion and toassure that everything depicted in the display is correct as far as safety in the industry is concerned. If you are an industry safety professionalwith a drilling contractor, service company or oil or gas company and are interested in donating some of your time to this important exhibit, please contact Lisa Lisinicchia at 409-766-1195 or at [email protected].

A new exhibit aimed at younger museum visitors (and probablysome older visitors as well) is on the outside wall of the original controlroom on the third floor. Ocean Star docent Greg Bergeron, who has formal training in art, painted a mural of a seascape on one of the control room’s steel walls. The mural includes a horizon line with skyabove and water below the horizon. Magnets have been made that depictjackups, semisubmersibles, drillships, boats, fish and fixed platforms aswell as a diver. Visitors can place the various magnets on the seascape to

illustrate offshore exploration and production as well as showing how theindustry lives in harmony with ocean life.

Technip donated a cutaway of an umbilical that is used in Shell’sPerdido spar in the Gulf of Mexico as well as a length of flexible pipe toshow museum visitors the technology and complexity of powering andproducing from a deepwater field far from shore. The new models willbe used in the museum’s production area on the second floor.

In addition to upgrading, renovating and installing new exhibitsand displays, the rig’s conference room was renovated including new furniture and a fresh coat of paint. Additionally, the restrooms have beencompletely renovated and new carpet has been installed on all threefloors of the museum.

Educational programs toexpand statewide in 2010

In 2009, OEC formed a partnership with the Foundationfor Energy Education, an affiliate of the Texas Alliance ofEnergy Producers, to expand energy education in schools acrossTexas. This effort builds on the OEC’s already successful programs.

Initially, the partnership is focusing on expanding usage of theMobile Offshore Learning Unit (MOLU) in six areas of Texas:Abilene, Amarillo, Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Tyler/Kilgore,and Wichita Falls. In conjunction with the MOLU visits in theseareas, teacher workshops will be held to increase participation ofelementary and secondary teachers in the OEC’s Project E3:Expanding Energy Education. Also as a feature of the partnership,in the first year, Project E3 workshops will be presented in four areas:Beaumont/Port Arthur, Bryan/College Station, Corpus Christi, andWaco.

The MOLU visits and the workshops will be offered to theteachers in these locations free of charge.

THE STAR, Fourth Quarter 2009 11

OEC was extremely busy during the fourth quarter attending conferencesthroughout Texas and the Houston area disseminating information aboutOEC’s education outreach programs including workshops and the MobileOffshore Learning Unit (MOLU). OEC conducted workshops at some of theconferences as well as being one of the exhibitors.

OEC representatives attended a conference in Frisco, Texas, Oct. 25-27 sponsored bythe Texas Association for Supervision andCurriculum Development(ASCD). OEC featured itsMOLU, Knowledge Box andPlaying with Petroleum Kit.OEC’s primary goal was togather names for possibleMOLU visits in areas definedby the Foundation forEnergy Education, withwhich OEC has partnered to present workshops andMOLU visits around Texas.OEC Education DirectorDoris Tomas collectednames o f p r i nc ipa l s , assistant superintendents, science curriculum directors and teachers.

“We have had a few calls from them hoping their schools will be put onthe list for a visit,” Doris said.

OEC also exhibited at the Annual Regional Science Teacher Conferencesponsored by the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) inGalveston on Oct. 17. A mini-workshop was conducted by Nina Corley, anOEC trained facilitator, also manned the OEC booth with Executive DirectorSandra Mourton. The conference was attended by Houston and Galvestonarea teachers. A drawing was held at theconference for a free MOLU visit to the winning teacher’s school. MeganMarshall, a teacher from Friendswood, won the free visit, which was held onDec.11.

OEC conducted a workshop at theTAME (Texas Alliance for Minorities inEngineering) conference Dec. 4-5 at theSheraton hotel in Houston. Despite thefreezing temperatures and a rare Houstonsnowfall, 19 brave teachers from HoustonISD and Fort Bend ISD attended. The workshop was facilitated by EducationDirector Doris Tomas.

TAME’s vision is that every K-12 student has the educational experience necessary to pursue a career in science, technology, engineeringand math (STEM). The alliance works toward that mission by creating partnerships among educators, industry, government and families, implement classroom and extracurricular programs and activities, focus onpopulations that remain under-represented in STEM, and promote the

diversity in STEM careers.OEC also exhibited at CAST (Conference for the

Advancement of Science Teaching), which is theScience Teachers Association of Texas’ (STAT) annualmeeting that was held at Moody Gardens in Galvestonthis year.
