    NHS Continuing Healthcare 2016 Survey

The Failing to Care coalition campaign to improve NHScontinuing healthcare.

NHS continuing healthcare, also known as NHScontinuing care, is a type of professional care that isarranged and paid for by the NHS. It's free to the persongetting the care. Whether a person gets it or not dependson whether the need for care is mostly due to healthneeds – which can be hard to work out.

They're particularly looking at the NHS continuinghealthcare made available in England - so are only askingpeople who have applied for it in England to respond tothis survey.

To help make NHS continuing healthcare better they needto understand what the system does well, and where it isletting people down.

This survey should take about fifteen minutes to complete.

Your responses to this survey will help them demandchange. They may use quotes from the answers they get,but will make them anonymous unless people give thempermission to use their name.

The survey will close after June 2016.You can find out more on their website at

People with a learning disability denied care

    close to home

The government’s Transforming Care programme aims tomove people with learning disabilities out of long-stayunits a long way from their family, and into the communitynearer to home.

Learning Disability Voices, who are a group of careproviders working together, think this will not work

because they say providers do not have the means tomove people into the community safely and effectively.

Learning Disability Voices have released their Care CrisisManifesto. A manifesto is something that tells you aboutwhat people believe.

CQC Report  – Better Care in My Hands

Better Care In My Hands describes how well people are

involved in their own care and what good involvement lookslike.

Everyone has a right to be involved in their own care.

This is very important for person centred care and helps to

make the care people receive better.

The report is based on evidence from

      national reports

      inspections

      patient surveys

      information reviews

The report shows what helps people and their families to

work together with health and social care staff and good

    practice examples from inspections.

Some of the things they found were

Half of the people asked feel involved in decisions

about their health care and treatment.

People with a learning disability are less involved intheir care.

People need to be more involved in their care.

Accessible information is needed for people and their

    families and carers

    CQC Strategy 2016 to 2021

The Care Quality Commission strategy show that they

have set measures to have a better approach to checkingpeople get high quality care.

Over the next five years four things have been chosen towork on that they think are important.

They will work with people to make things better asnew care models develop, and share the results ofthe checks made of NHS trusts' and foundationtrusts'

They will use information from the people andproviders in a better way to make sure all people

have good care and to check that care gets better.

They will work with others to agree how to checkcare and if the care is good. They will do this bygetting information from providers to make sure thatall people have good care.

They will work in ways that are efficient and savesmoney. They also want to improve how they workwith the people and providers.

The plan is available in easy read here

Section 165 of the Equality Act 2010

Fantastic news for all wheelchair users.

The taxi campaign for equal fares for people inwheelchairs has been going for about 5 years.

Groups around the UK have been campaigning for evenlonger (since 1996) when the Disability Discrimination Actcame into force.

The section that they have been trying to get enacted is

165 which stops private hire taxi drivers charging extra orrefusing to accept a wheelchair user as a customer.

Transport minister Andrew Jones has now said thatsections 165 and 167 of the Equality Act 2010 will comeinto force this year, which he said will “impose duties onthe driver of a taxi to accept and assist a wheelchair-user

and not to charge extra for doing so”.
