The Keys to an IIF Workplace
The JMJ approach is well-defined and proven to work in tandem with existing
safety practices and programs for the purpose of creating Incident and Injury-Free
results—breakthrough safety performance. Our IIF consulting approach revolves
around Four Keys: Aligning, Leading, Performing and Sustaining. Over the course
of an IIF engagement, we will shift our focus from one key to another as we tailor a
solution to meet each client’s unique needs.
Aligning
An IIF journey begins with a commitment to the elimination of all incidents and injuries
in the workplace. When individuals align their IIF commitments and put them into action
the safety culture will shift in a positive direction.
Leading
In an IIF culture, safety leadership can come from anyone; it is not assigned by title.
Those leading others to increase their capacity to work and interact in an IIF manner
intentionally exhibit a particular set of leadership skills—ways of being and doing in the
workplace that produce extraordinary results.
Performing
In an effective IIF workplace, employees routinely operate in the IIF Performance Zone
and influence others to do likewise. Translating commitment into constant and reliable
safety-minded action requires a desire to learn together, support one another and
interact in new ways.
Sustaining
Fundamentally, sustaining an IIF workplace requires that the profound commitment
to safety and special set of skills learned become habits that are deeply embedded in
the organization. Adapting and expanding existing processes and systems to reinforce
these changes ensure lasting results.

Components of the IIF Process
Each component of the JMJ IIF process is designed to contribute to the comprehensive, integral approach illustrated
by the Four Keys. Applied together these components ensure that a sustainable IIF workplace emerges.
No two engagements are exactly alike. JMJ tailors IIF consulting solutions from the following components.
Engagement Launch and Review Sessions
A partnership between JMJ and the client is formed during the initial stages of working together to define and launch
the IIF engagement. This IIF Sponsor group then routinely confers to assess progress and make engagement
adjustments, as needed. The Sponsor group also reviews accomplishments and ensures that structures for
sustainability are in place as JMJ exits an engagement.
JMJ is responsible for ensuring that communications with the IIF Sponsor group are powerful. The aim of our
interactions with clients is always in service of creating IIF results—there is no other acceptable outcome.
Integral Safety Assessment Process
To powerfully initiate an IIF journey within a project or organization and to steer its implementation over time, JMJ
applies an Integral Safety Assessment™ process that includes:
• A comprehensive Integral Safety Assessment survey and analysis,
• Personal and group interviews,
• Assessment review, recommendation and planning meetings, and
• Pulse surveys.
A rich snapshot of the workplace culture and attitude toward safety is revealed by combining results from the
Integral Safety Assessment survey, which measures five critical dimensions that impact safety performance, and
one-on-one interviews. Resulting information is compiled into an Integral Safety Assessment Report of Findings and
Recommendations that is used to initiate the commitment process, contribute to planning and coaching sessions
with managers and leaders, and fine-tune the ensuing engagement. In the later stages of the journey, pulse and/or
additional Integral Safety Assessment surveys are administered, as needed, to capture current perceptions and
ensure that the organization is on path toward the end goal.

IIF Commitment Workshops and Orientation Sessions
The IIF journey begins with people aligning their commitments to eliminating all incidents and injuries. The IIF
Commitment workshop introduces a type of leadership, a perspective and a level of inquiry that is distinct from what
is usually called for and experienced in the workplace. In the workshop, as participants explore their beliefs and
attitudes about safety, new perceptions and thinking surface and a commitment to move forward in service of IIF
results is evoked.
IIF Orientation sessions, held with employees who have not attended an IIF Commitment workshop, are an induction
into the IIF culture already established or just beginning to be formed. The intention is to reinforce the organization’s
commitment to each employee’s well-being and IIF results, as well as to provide initial training in how to work in an
IIF manner. These sessions are ideal for clients who use contractors and/or experience frequent workforce turnover.
Attendees leave these sessions more open to learning from the IIF leaders and champions present on their jobsite.
(After licensing and training by JMJ, IIF champions within a client organization can be trained to hold IIF Orientation
sessions themselves—IIF Orientation Train-the-Trainer—to promote a sustainable safety culture.)
IIF Leadership Teamwork and Leadership Development
The IIF Leadership Teamwork and Leadership Development components are available to members of the client’s IIF
Leadership Team, which is formed to lead the engagement process. Comprised of influential client representatives,
this team is coached by JMJ in how to effectively demonstrate IIF leadership, guide the rollout of IIF events and
manage an IIF safety approach over time.
The IIF Leadership Teamwork component specifically supports team members as they together take on functions
other than the traditional safety management work that is already in progress, such as issues involving workplace
culture. Team members learn how to form an effective team and operate in service of IIF results.
Once an IIF Leadership Team is well underway, IIF Leadership Development sessions deepen team members’
understanding of how to lead adaptive challenges—those for which there are no easy answers—such as safety.
This includes, among others, insights into:
• What to expect during a culture transformation initiative like the IIF engagement underway,
• How to handle the resistance to change that may arise,
• How to eliminate any existing barriers to IIF results,
• How to align the organization’s processes and systems with the IIF commitment to ensure sustainability.
This advanced leadership work is distinct from the IIF Leadership Teamwork offering and
represents a best practice for those companies and leaders mature in their IIF experience.

IIF Coaching
A select group of managers and leaders, those in positions of influence in an organization, particularly with respect
to the organization’s stated IIF commitment, are personally coached by JMJ during the life of an engagement.
When those who are held as leaders demonstrate desired IIF attitudes and behaviors, quick and sustainable
results occur. The JMJ coaching methodology combines formal and informal coaching sessions inside an
outcome-based framework that allows the coachee’s progress and performance to be tracked and acknowledged
over time.
IIF in Action
For lasting effect, an expressed commitment must quickly move into effective action. The JMJ IIF in Action suite
provides a range of workshops and in-the-field support sessions to introduce and teach the core skills required of
anyone working to turn the possibility of an IIF workplace into a reality.
Managers can engage in Leading IIF in Action to learn how to create the workplace environment in which those
at the front lines of the IIF engagement can perform more efficiently and effectively. Continually supporting those
who are most often in contact with the workforce and creating the desired IIF culture is a necessary step to ensure
long-lasting change.
Coaching IIF in Action is designed to assist a core group of key influencers, people who are frequently in contact
with the workforce and supervision, to gain broad and deep skills in affecting IIF results in the field. The skill set
taught through a combination of classroom and in-the-field support activities builds on other safety practices
already in place. Those trained to be IIF coaches learn how to interact with others in a way that changes their
attitudes and behaviors quickly and permanently. Over time, the visible, consistent care and concern and IIF focus
demonstrated by this core group of IIF coaches builds a culture capable of sustained IIF results, regardless
of circumstances.
Supervising IIF in Action provides, in a short time-frame, a set of basic IIF skills for anyone involved in supervising
others in the workplace. Just like the Coaching IIF in Action offering, this component enhances the skills that
supervisors are already applying to create safe work. It ensures their ability to assign safe work and daily influence
their workers to perform in an IIF manner.
Through the full IIF in Action suite, people engaged at all levels in the workplace are taught how to cultivate and
use skills appropriate to their role in the organization and in support of creating an IIF workplace. The field support
and practice sessions included are vital to the effectiveness of this training and sustain its impact. Clients often
establish ongoing IIF coaching teams and mentor relationships as structures in support of continuing the IIF
momentum established.

Taking Steps to Get Started on the IIF Journey
For over two decades, JMJ has helped clients reach well beyond their current level of safety performance to
harness the skills necessary to generate breakthrough results. The JMJ IIF process sets companies up for
continued success by establishing a new safety framework in which they can effectively operate to produce
desired results for the long-term.
Until the complete elimination of worker injury has occurred, and a culture is in place that can sustain this, there
is still work to be done to further the journey toward working safely. Therefore, JMJ remains committed to helping
organizations make the impossible in workplace performance safety possible.
The JMJ Incident and Injury-Free approach is dynamic—suited to entire organizations or individual projects and
tailored to meet the specific objectives of each engagement. Understanding that client needs grow and change
over time, the IIF process is fluid and flexible by design, while generally following our Four Keys guide.
The bottom line: If your company seeks to initiate, build and sustain a workplace in which injury is completely
eliminated, and outside support is desired to reach that goal, JMJ stands ready to help. We seek clients who are
willing to join with us in service of creating an Incident and Injury-Free workplace in which both the people and the
business thrive.
