Special Happenings for the Month
April, except for bringing showers that, in turn, bring May flowers, doesn’t seem to have anything going for it, this year. Our Easter Sunday celebration happened last month, Ascension happens next month, and April is – lacking! However, just because there is no “main event” in April, there are still things happening at Ascension! For example:
1. Every Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM, there is a Ladies’ Bible Study held in the Sunken Room. This is faithfully attended by 12 to 17 women, and there are many more chairs for more ladies.
2. Confirmation classes are going strong into the “final lap” before Confirmation on May 15.
3. Wednesday is the hosting night for bell choir rehearsal and adult choir. Interested? It’s not too late to get involved.
4. The Missional Outreach group that leads short worship services at HHR is open to anyone who wants to come help and participate in this special witness. April 6 and 20 at 10:00 AM – go for it!
5. Refresher sessions/absolutely new sessions for members or those who are looking into the Lutheran faith are offered in Lutheranism 101 classes on Thursdays at 6:30 PM.
6. Krispy Kreme donut sales are happening this month to support our youth going to the International Youth Gathering in July.
Come and join in! It’s always more fun when you’re there!

So far this year, I have attended
several funerals, beginning with
Libby’s and Grace’s, both members
of Ascension. Another was the
funeral of a Lutheran pastor who
formerly served in Huntsville. Most
recently, I was at the services for a
longtime family friend. All of them
were what I would call “Christian
funerals” that were followed by
“Christian burial.” At every one I
heard people speaking of the
deceased as now being in a “better
place.” And, I also heard remarks
about what “good persons” they
were. These comments, without
necessarily referring either to their
faith or religion, seemed to imply
that the dead have attained their
final resting place in Heaven
because they had lived good lives
here on earth. Is that what qualifies
us to go to Heaven?
Obviously, no. We do not get to
Heaven by our works and merits.
Nevertheless, let’s ask this question
anyhow. Who will inherit eternal
life in Heaven with Christ Jesus?
God’s Word answers this question
in crystal clear words. Jesus said, “I
am the way, the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except
through Me.” In one of His prayers
to the heavenly Father He declared,
“This is eternal life, that they might
know You, the only true God, and
Jesus Christ Whom You have sent.”
Jesus described Life in Heaven as
living in His “Father’s house, where
there are many rooms.” And, “I am
going to prepare a place for you -
and I will return to carry you to be
with Me, that where I am you may
be also.”
The Gospel states, “God has sent us His only begotten Son, that
whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
The Bible, therefore, identifies Heaven with the Father’s house
and makes the entrance into eternal life dependent upon faith in
Jesus Christ. But, growing numbers disregard the Scriptures and
Jesus words.
While some people do believe that good works are the key that
unlocks Heaven’s door for us, others believe that it’s our church-
going that opens the gate, that it is important to profess a religion
and practice it regularly by going to church…and moreover, that
it really doesn’t make a lot of difference which denomination it is,
whether Lutheran or Catholic or Baptist or Methodist. “At least
we’re going to church,” they say. “And, we all have the same
God,” they add. But, once that kind of wrong thinking takes root,
it becomes easier to make the next error and state that, since there
is only one God, all religions worship the same God—Muslims,
Jews, Hindus, etc.—so that whichever religion we worship
doesn’t make any difference. And, then there are those who
disdain and deny any kind of god at all.
We must say that the previous paragraph is full of dead ends: we
are not saved by works…nor by going to church…nor by having
the true and correct religion. We are not saved by our religion at
all, but by the grace of God. And, though there are many gods,
each of whom is unique and different from all the others, there is
but one true God, and this one true God has removed the ultimate
dead end for us. That ultimate dead end is that we are dead in our
trespasses and sins, and there is no way we can raise ourselves up
to life in Him and thus go to Heaven.
Many people seem to believe that
all good people will go to Heaven.
And, that’s why they say at a
funeral that “he is in a better
place.” But these comments do
not square up with the Bible, for
many folks remain ignorant of
God’s Word. Such ignorance
gives rise to many opinions.

Reflections

Our God in Christ Jesus has rolled away the deadly stone that prevents us
from eternal life. He opens up our grave and promises to raise us to
Heaven with Him. Our salvation depends solely upon our faith in Him—a
saving faith that believes He forgave our sins when He sacrificed Jesus on
a cross. Now in His grace He invites us to enter into His Kingdom where
we will possess eternal life. To that end He makes us alive through baptism
by drowning our sin and burying it in His grave and then, in His resurrection, He
brings us eternal life in Him.
Going to Heaven is so much more than just thinking it is a “better place”
that opens up its door to every one whose friends call him a “good
person.” Yet, this “so much more” is not work we must do. It is God’s
work totally. God calls us just to rely on what He has done for us, while
He ushers us into eternal life, by His grace through faith in our Lord,
Jesus Christ.
Last week we celebrated Jesus’ rising from the grave. His resurrection
validates our faith and enables life eternal. “Thanks be to God who gives
us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Just thought you should know these things before you attend your next
funeral.
Love, Pastor Bernie

.
Lo, in a grave He lay, Jesus, my Savior; Waiting the coming day, Jesus, my Lord. Up from the grave He arose With a mighty triumph o’er His foes. He arose a victor from the dark domain And He lives forever with His saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!
Robert Lowry (1826-1899) “Music, with me, has been a side issue. I would rather preach a gospel sermon to an appreciative audience than write a hymn.” However, it was for his hymns that he was well known, including “Christ Arose,” “Nothing but the Blood of Jesus,” “I Need Thee Every Hour,” “We’re Marching to Zion” and others.
Reflections

The greatest surprise about Easter is not that Jesus is alive, risen
from the dead, out of the grave, that He conquered death and hell,
and comes to meet you as He promised. The greatest surprise is that
He did all that and is not angry. There is no fear for us in His return
because He is not angry. He bears no grudge. He seeks no
vengeance. He comes to give peace, with mercy and forgiveness
and salvation.
Jesus lives and is not angry. Imagine that. He is not angry. He
doesn’t blame those who killed Him. He doesn’t blame you. For no
one takes His life from Him. He lays it down of His own accord. He
gives Himself into death to win us back from sin, death, and hell.
He does it willingly without coercion. He does it sacrificially, Him
for us. He gave what was His to give. Thus His petition to the
Father from the cross, “Forgive them” is granted to you in His
resurrection. He comes alive out of death to forgive and to give His
life to you.
There is nothing to be afraid of because Jesus is raised from the
dead and is not angry. Thus we are free—free from worrying about
how to make it up to Him, and free to give as He has given to us.
He gave Himself as a gift, His life in exchange for our death,
willingly and sacrificially. And so it is that we are now free to give
in like manner: willingly, sacrificially, with what we have been
given.
We give to the church because it is in the church where our eyes
have seen and our ears have heard that Jesus lives and is not angry.
It is here where we learn of God’s mercy and forgiveness in Christ.
It is here where we continually receive that message of life, where
He visits us to give peace, with mercy and forgiveness and
salvation.
So do not be afraid. Jesus lives, and He is not angry. The sacrifice
has been made. The debt is canceled and forgotten. Righteousness
is declared. Jesus lives. He lives, and He is not angry. You are
restored. You are reconciled to the Father in the Son. Your future is
assured: Jesus lives. It is not just death and Hell, the devil and his
demons, that are undone. Your sins, your fear are undone. They are
gone, forgotten, destroyed. Jesus lives.
Hallelujah! Jesus lives. And
because He lives, you are just.
You are right with God, pleasing
and delightful to Him. You are
forgiven, clean, pure, holy, and
filled with His good works and
with His Name. He is not angry.
He is glad to have you. He wants
you. He loves you. He gave
everything that is His to and for
you, willingly and sacrificially. In
faith and trust in Him, let us do
likewise.
He lives, my kind, wise, heavenly
Friend;
He lives and LOVES me to the end.
He lives and while He lives I’ll sing –
He lives, my Prophet, Priest and
King!

We would have an eternity of
pain and agony awaiting us.
Instead, Christ’s perfect life,
death and resurrection have
resulted in His righteousness
being imputed to us and have
opened the kingdom of Heaven
to us and all believers.
The incredible love and sacrifice
of Jesus, combined with the
unimaginable joy of Heaven,
particularly when contrasted
with the unimaginable terror of
hell, should motivate us to share
God’s love and promise with
everyone. Hell is a fate that we
would not wish on our worst
enemy. However, our inaction,
our reluctance to witness,
translates into just this fate for
people for whom we care greatly
– for our friends, our family, our
neighbors and our co-workers.
It is a terrible thing to be a sinner
in the hands of a righteous God.
Therefore, while hell may not be
our ultimate fate, we must do
everything in our power to share
God’s Word with others in the
hope that the Holy Spirit will
come to them and they will be
saved.
As long as there is life, there is
hope. It’s not too late to share the
Gospel of Christ.
REFLECTIONS
Sinners in the Hands of a Righteous God
The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the
earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only
evil all the time. The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the
earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the LORD said, “I will wipe from
the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals,
the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have
made them.” (Genesis 6:5-7)
Estimates of the number of people on earth at the time of Noah range between a
few million to a few billion. With one fell swoop, God wiped them out,
regretting that He had ever created them. Only eight people, Noah and his sons
and their wives, were spared God’s wrath. The rest of civilization, as well as all
land-based animals not on the ark, felt God’s righteous anger and were
destroyed.
We tend to focus on God’s love, on His mercy and grace, on the great
humiliation Jesus underwent to become man and to die as punishment for our
sins. We tend to pay less attention to God’s righteous anger at man’s sins, at
God’s justice which demands a harsh punishment for our rebellion, at God’s
complete intolerance for disobedience. We downplay hell, a place of terrible
torment far worse than anything on earth, the eternal home for billions of
people. Billions. We tend to downplay that thousands of millions of people
will spend eternity in fiery suffering.
Lest we think ourselves as somehow better, we deserve the same fate. We are a
rebellious, idolatrous people. We have, and continue to, put ourselves first. We
have focused on our wants, our needs, our desires. We have paid lip service to
God while our main efforts have centered on ourselves. We are no better than
the billions that will spend eternity in hell. We deserve God’s wrath, God’s
punishment, God’s righteous anger directed at us for our evil thoughts, words
and deeds.
We are in the hands of a righteous God, a God who is as upset with modern
man’s evil thoughts and actions as He was with those of the inhabitants of earth
at the time of Noah. One day, God’s longsuffering will come to an end and the
world as we know it will cease to exist.
Thanks be to God that Jesus came to earth, became man and suffered and died
as punishment for our sins. Without this act of unfathomable love, we would be
destined to the same fate as all unbelievers.

In 1618, Prague was situated in a
region known as Bohemia and
Bohemia was a part of the Austro-
Hungarian Empire. This empire was
ruled by the Hapsburgs and it was
commonplace that the ruler of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire also ruled
the Holy Roman Empire. In short,
the Hapsburgs were and would
continue to be the most powerful
family in Europe until the end of
World War I. Now, in 1555, the
Peace of Augsburg had instituted
Cuius region, eius religio meaning
“his region, his religion,” allowing
the princes and rulers within the
Holy Roman Empire to choose
whether they were Catholic or
Lutheran.
Hello everyone! I will be doing a series based on the historical events and people of
the Reformation and the immediate fallout that occurred during the 30 years war. I
don’t think that I am being facetious when I say that the Reformation is arguably
the most important historical event in the western world. If you need proof that the
Reformation still impacts us today, nearly 500 years later, you need look no further
than this church. This congregation and our synod are direct descendants of the
Reformation through which Martin Luther sought to reform the Catholic Church
and reinstitute it in God’s Word. The lasting impact of the Reformation is easily
visible to us. We see Lutheran Churches here and there and we also see several
other denominations that all came out of this time period. The immediate impact of
the Reformation is a bit more difficult for us to see.
The event that I would like to cover now is called the Defenestration of Prague.
Now, this is one of my favorite titles for an historical event. The word
Defenestration has the German root, Fenster which means window. So this term
literally means “the un-windowing of Prague.”

Bohemia was a region that was declared Catholic, but the rulers of this region
did not force Protestants to follow their religion. In fact, they had even
increased religious rights for Protestants in this region. But this was all to the
ire of other members of the Hapsburg family, and in 1617, a new Hapsburg
took the throne. Now, this man was a proponent of the Catholic Counter-
Reformation and was not as keen on protestant rights as were his predecessors.
In 1618, he ordered the end of all construction of Protestant Churches and he
disassembled the protestant assembly of Bohemia.
On May 23, 1618, four Catholic Lords met
with the three main Protestant estates of the
region. The Protestants were wondering if
the Catholic Lords may have been behind
the halting of construction of Protestant
churches. The Protestants eventually
figured out that three of the Lords in their
presence were responsible for persuading
the Emperor to end the construction and
they, in turn, “unwindowed” the building
they were in by throwing the Catholic
Lords out the window.
All the men survived the three-story fall,
but the accounts of how they survived
differ depending on who you ask. The Catholics claim that angels, summoned
by the Blessed Virgin, lowered these men to safety. Protestants claim they
survived because they landed on a huge pile of horse manure. Regardless of
how these men survived, this event caused both Protestant and Catholic Lords
in Bohemia to gather allies and soldiers to prepare for war, and the subsequent
war would last for 30 years, tearing Europe, and especially the area known as
modern-day Germany, to shreds.
I hope you enjoyed this journey into history. Next month, I will be discussing
one of my favorite figures of the 30 years war, Swedish king, Gustavus
Adolphus.
Blessings,
Vicar Alex

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Isaiah 60:1
Ah, spring! A “spring” in our step, longer daylight hours, birds singing, new
flowers sprouting forth, green grass to mow! Who doesn’t love spring? Well,
maybe those who have to mow! I read an article recently about planting a “moon
garden” with flowers that bloom at night and that attract evening pollinators such as
moths, bats, and bees. With the moonlight and stars shining on certain types of
flowers, these gardens are said to be truly spectacular. But in these unique gardens,
the beauty of the flowers is visible only by moonlight and stars. God makes the
night lights shine so that we may experience the loveliness of the “moon garden”
flowers. If there is no light we can see nothing except darkness. Every day we
experience the darkness of sin but God is working continually in the darkness of this
world to point us to the Light of His salvation. Through His Light we can see beauty
all around us at all times. We need to keep focused on Jesus, the Light of the world,
who calls on us to do what is beneficial to other people in our deeds and in sharing
His Word. May others see the glory of the Lord as we”…walk as children of Light
(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to
discern what is pleasing to the Lord”. Ephesians 5:8-10

Ascension LWML
Activities to meet our 2016 goals are underway! This is a very exciting time as we
share new ideas in our effort to do all we can to help others and tell them about Christ
Jesus! Small committees have been formed. The committees are missions, fundraisers,
confirmation reception, LWML Sunday, and Advent CDC dinner. Details of each
committee’s plans will be provided in future Reflections! Please join us at the meeting
on April 9 at 10 a.m. ---we’d love to hear your ideas!!!
Another reason to attend the April 9 meeting is that Marcia Pate and Mary Engel will
bring us up-to-date on what’s happening with the Children’s Blessing Basket ministry
which is touching many children in the Huntsville community!!
At each monthly meeting starting with the April 9 meeting, LWML members will bring
an ingathering of 1-2 items of non-perishable food which will be donated to the CDC
Food Bank. The membership committee has developed a new LWML member packet
and updated the LWML information that is placed in the Ascension Visitors/New
Members packets.
Several LWML ladies participated in the CDC “Grandparents Day” in March serving
as stand-ins for grandparents who couldn’t attend. The day included doing an arts and
crafts project with the children, enjoying a snack, and attending chapel. The children
were very excited and it was an enjoyable time for all!

Twelve proposed grants for the 2017-2018 Biennium will be presented and voted on at the Gulf States District
Convention April 30-May 1. More information on the grants selected will be provided in future Reflections.
A message from Elizabeth Lange, Gulf States District LWML Young Woman Representative:
“Happy New Year!! I hope everyone had a fun and safe Christmas season with your
family and loved ones. To start the New Year right, one of the things I wanted to do as
this district’s YWR was to work on getting all young women throughout the district
involved. I can’t do this, though, without your help! I’ve set up a page on Facebook
named “Gulf States District LWML Young Women”. I’m using this as a tool to reach as
many young women in the district as I can. My goal is to organize a mission project for
us to meet up and work on, maybe twice a year in the beginning. Please share the group
name in your zones and societies so I can get as many involved as possible! God’s
Blessings to you all!” Elizabeth’s email address is [email protected]
More information about “Young Women in Mission” can be found at the national LWML website, www.lwml.org.
All Ascension young women are invited to join Elizabeth in organizing a mission project!!
National LWML
An LWML national grant in the amount of $75,000 will bring hope and healing to the Navajo people by
implementing Gospel-oriented programs for Navajo men, women and youth to empower and equip them to live
victorious in the midst of their circumstances and to be over-comers, offering better choices for a brighter future.
Programs will include: youth camps, after school enrichment programs, Boys/Girls clubs, trip to share faith with
another Native people group, men’s Bible group, abused women’s support group, and women’s health education.
The grant for “Clean Water and Evangelism Ministry-MOST Ministries” detailed in the January 2016 “Reflections
“has been paid in full. To God be all the glory!
And on that happy note, LWML wishes everyone a Happy Spring!!

I would like to take this opportunity to
invite you to what promises to be an
unforgettable musical experience. On
Friday, April 8, the Huntsville
Community Chorus will be presenting
Brahms Requiem at First Baptist Church
at 7:00 pm. It will be sung in English
with texts from the Old and New
Testament.
Brahms wrote this piece at the age of
thirty-three. The impetus for its
composition was the death of his mother
which affected him deeply. He chose
not to use the standard Latin text as he
wanted to express words in the
vernacular which he personally selected
from Luther’s Bible. (It is interesting to
note that Brahms worked on an English
version of this piece later in his life.)
The overarching theme of the Brahms
Requiem is that in the face of death (or
any type of loss)......you shall have
comfort.
The Requiem opens with the words of
Matthew 5:4 which set the tone for the
entire work: ‘Blessed are they who are sorrowful. . .” Some of you may be
familiar with the fourth movement -
‘How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord of hosts‘ (Psalm 84:1) - There are
moments of unbelievable power which
convey the resurrection message of 1st
Corinthians, chapter 15, culminating in
the words of Revelation 4:11.
Music has that unique capacity to reach
us at our deepest possible level. Choral
music embodies deep power to touch us
in profound ways that provide lasting
comfort and strength for our life journey.
Such will be the case with the Brahms
Requiem. Come take this marvelous
musical journey with the Huntsville
Community Chorus on April 8. Believe
me, you’ll be glad you did!

The CDC welcomes volunteers to help in various ways. There are currently 8
Ascension volunteers but more are needed. Do you love children and would you like
to interact with them? Assistants in the classroom, reading Bible stories are needed.
Do you like to hold babies and rock them? Assistants in the infant
room are needed. Maybe you are a journalist and love to take
pictures. Someone to write a monthly Reflections article
describing activities and including pictures is needed. Are
you a marketer or like advertising? Advertising on the
radio, TV, Facebook, and the website is needed. You
can spread the word to neighboring churches by helping
Harold Lawson visit area churches who do not have child
care and tell them about our Ascension CDC. Maybe you
would like to join the children in worship at weekly Chapel on
Tuesdays at 9:30 AM. Or you may want to order leaflets or information to give to
new families about the Lutheran Church or stories and activity pages about Jesus for
the children to take home. We need someone to collect and maintain a supply of
family resources to display in the CDC entrance and put on our website. These are
but a few ways you can be involved in the ministry of the Child Development
Center. The philosophy at Ascension CDC starts out by stating: “We believe that
our preschool and CDC is a ministry to young children and their families, centered in
the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, our Savior.”
If interested call Susan Bridges or Mary Engel.
Have you noticed the sign as you enter the classroom area? It states, “Every time a
child enters our classroom, he is waiting to be touched by Jesus. What we do has
eternal consequences. Are you ready to be part of a miracle?”
