Convention of Central Information

Commission concluded at New Delhi on 3

September 2013. The convention was

inaugurated on 2 September 2013 by the

President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. The

theme of the convention was Eight years of

RTI: A Retrospective. A noted historian and

columnist, Ramachandra Guha delivered the

keynote address on Democracy in India:

India Ranks 66th On „Global Innovation

Index‟: On 2 July India ranked 66th in the

Global Innovation Index 2013, published by

Cornell University, INSEAD, World

Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)

as a knowledge partner. Switzerland and

Sweden maintained rank 1 and 2

respectively. The study ranked 142

economies across the world on their

innovation capacity and efficiency.

Government releases National Cyber

Security Policy 2013: With an aim to

protect information and build capabilities to

prevent cyber-attacks, the govt released the

National Cyber Security Policy 2013 to

safeguard both physical and business assets

of the country.

Clean India Campaign launched at world

heritage site Taj Mahal: The Union

Minister of State for Tourism K. Chiranjeevi

launched the Clean India campaign at world

heritage site Taj Mahal, Agra. The Clean

India Campaign is an initiative of Union

Ministry of Tourism under the 12th

Five

Year Plan with the objective to increase

tourist arrivals to the country. ONGC

adopted Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal is the second

site to adopt under this project. The first one

was Qutub Minar which was adopted by the

India Tourism Development Corporation in

June 2012.

Rann Utsav 2013 Began in Kutch,

Gujarat: The Rann Utsav, a cultural festival

of Gujarat state was inaugurated by Gujarat

Tourism Minister Saurabh Patel on 17

December 2013 at Kutch, Gujarat. The two-

month long cultural festival that attracts

huge number of domestic and international

tourists is celebrated from 17 December to

December 2013 became the first country in the

world to legalise marijuana for recreational use

with the state taking control of the trade. In this

Shakuntala Devi: The ‗human computer‘,

‗mental calculator‘, math whiz Shakuntala

Devi passed away in April 2013 at the age

of 80. Ms. Devi held a Guinness World

Record for her lightening-speed

calculations.

PB Srinivas: Veteran playback singer PB

Srinivas who rendered more than 3,000

songs in eight languages died in Chennai on

14 April 2013.

Legendary actor Pran died: The winner of

Dadasaheb Phalke Award and a veteran

actor Pran died in Mumbai. He was

conferred with Dada Saheb Phalke Award

on 12 April 2013, which was received by

SBI launched State Bank of India Smart

payout card: Country's largest lender State

Bank of India launched a pre-paid card for

blue collar employees and students named

State Bank of India smart payout card. The

new product will bring a large number of

workers, contract labourers and dependent

family members, who don't have access to

the basic banking facilities within the ambit

of financial inclusion. The pre-paid card can

be loaded with Rs 10,000 at a time with a

monthly cap of Rs 25,000.

World Bank to support seven low-income

States: In its first country strategy to set

specific goals on reducing poverty and

increasing prosperity, the World Bank plans

to shift its support in India significantly to

seven identified low-income States where

most of the country‗s poor live. As part of

the multilateral lending agency‗s new

Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) for

India (2013-17), which was discussed by the

Board of Executive Directors, the World

Bank proposes a lending programme of $3

billion-5 billion every year over the next

four years. The States identified for the

focused support are Bihar, Chhattisgarh,

Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha,

Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.

Monetary Fund (IMF) has marginally

percent, the finance ministry expects India

to exceed 6 percent growth in the current

State Bank Xpress Money Card launched

by SBI: State Bank of India, in partnership

with a non-banking finance company, UAE

Exchange and Financial Services, has

launched a card which will enable the holder

to receive the remittance directly on the

card. The card — State Bank Xpress Money

Card — can be loaded with up to Rs 50,000.

A maximum of 30 remittances can be loaded

during a calendar year.

Repo Rate kept unchanged by RBI in

Mid-Quarter Monetary Policy Review:

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its mid-

quarter Monetary Policy Review, announced

on 18 December 2013, has kept the policy

rate unchanged at 7.75%. The move was

unexpected in light of the recent spike in

inflation, especially food inflation. This has

come as welcome relief for the industry
