India Ranks 66th On „Global Innovation

Index‟: On 2 July India ranked 66th in the

Global Innovation Index 2013, published by

Cornell University, INSEAD, World

Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)

as a knowledge partner. Switzerland and

Sweden maintained rank 1 and 2

respectively. The study ranked 142

economies across the world on their

innovation capacity and efficiency.

Summer Olympic Games: Tokyo on 7

September 2013 won the right to host the

2020 Summer Olympic Games. Members of

the International Olympic Committee (IOC)

meeting in Buenos Aires chose the Japanese

capital Tokyo, over Istanbul, after Madrid

was dramatically eliminated following a



first-round tie with the Turkish city. Japan

won the right to host Olympic Games for the

second time. It had previously hosted the

Games in 1964. Olympic is considered

Legalize Marijuana Trade: Uruguay on 10

December 2013 became the first country in the

world to legalise marijuana for recreational use

Templeton Prize”: South Africa‘s

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has

won ―2013 Templeton Prize‖ for his life-

long work in promoting love and

forgiveness. The prize was announced at the

foundation‘s headquarters in West

Conshohocken in Pennsylvania and is

valued at $1.7-million (about Rs.15.6-

million).Last year‘s prize was awarded to

the exiled Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader,

Allahabad bank signed a Memorandum

of Understanding (MoU) with Chamber of

Indian Micro, Small and Medium

Enterprises (CIMSME) in Kolkata on 4

January 2013. The MoU was signed to

support the priority sector lending.

LPG subsidy directly in bank accounts

from June 1 in 18 districts: Starting June 1

cooking gas (LPG) consumers in 18 districts

will get Rs 435 in their bank accounts when

they book an LPG cylinder as the

government rolls out its ambitious direct



benefit transfer programme to cut its fuel

subsidy. The scheme was to be rolled out in

20 districts initially.

nutrition. Total size of the project is Rs.

2893 crore with 70 percent IDA share of Rs.

2025 crore (USD$ 450 million) over 7 years.

SBI launched State Bank of India Smart

payout card: Country's largest lender State

Bank of India launched a pre-paid card for

blue collar employees and students named

State Bank of India smart payout card. The

new product will bring a large number of

workers, contract labourers and dependent

family members, who don't have access to

the basic banking facilities within the ambit

of financial inclusion. The pre-paid card can

be loaded with Rs 10,000 at a time with a

monthly cap of Rs 25,000.

World Bank to support seven low-income

States: In its first country strategy to set

specific goals on reducing poverty and

increasing prosperity, the World Bank plans

to shift its support in India significantly to

seven identified low-income States where

most of the country‗s poor live. As part of

the multilateral lending agency‗s new

Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) for

India (2013-17), which was discussed by the

Board of Executive Directors, the World

Bank proposes a lending programme of $3

billion-5 billion every year over the next

four years. The States identified for the

focused support are Bihar, Chhattisgarh,

Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha,

Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.

IMF cuts India‟s growth forecast to 5.6

percent for FY 2014: International

Monetary Fund (IMF) has marginally

brought down India's growth rate projections

to 5.6 per cent for this fiscal and 6.3 per cent

for the next financial year. Although the

IMF has pegged India‘s growth at 5.6

percent, the finance ministry expects India

to exceed 6 percent growth in the current

financial year.

State Bank Xpress Money Card launched

by SBI: State Bank of India, in partnership

with a non-banking finance company, UAE

Exchange and Financial Services, has

launched a card which will enable the holder

to receive the remittance directly on the

card. The card — State Bank Xpress Money

Card — can be loaded with up to Rs 50,000.

A maximum of 30 remittances can be loaded

during a calendar year.

R Power commissions 45-MW wind

project in Maharashtra: Reliance Power

said its 45-MW wind power project at

Vashpet in Maharashtra has commenced

operations. The Anil Ambani-led company

is already operating a 40 MW solar PV

project in Rajasthan and with the



commissioning of the 45 MW wind power

capacity.

Fund Organization, EPFO, has started

registration of digital signatures of

employers for online transfer of Provident

Fund accounts. The system is aimed at

making the fund transfer process

transparent, efficient and comfortable for

India: Bangladesh began importing

electricity from India on an experimental

basis, adding 50 MW to the national grid.

RBI allowed the Non-Resident Investors

to buy Shares under FDI Scheme: The

Reserve Bank of India allowed the Non-

Resident Investors including NRIs to

purchase shares of Indian entities Under FDI

Scheme. The investment can be made as per

the mentioned conditions. RBI has allowed

the NRIs to make investment under the FDI

scheme only on the listed entities, on

recognized stock exchanges.

ICICI Bank launches new Facebook app

Pockets: ICICI Bank has launched a new

Facebook app that will enable its customers

to transact directly from the social

networking site. Primarily targeted at young

customers, the new app 'Pockets' will enable

customers of the bank to transfer money,

Repo Rate kept unchanged by RBI in

Mid-Quarter Monetary Policy Review:

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its mid-

quarter Monetary Policy Review, announced

on 18 December 2013, has kept the policy

rate unchanged at 7.75%. The move was

unexpected in light of the recent spike in

inflation, especially food inflation. This has

come as welcome relief for the industry

which already is battling gloomy economic

environment as indicated 1.8% growth in

industrial output in November 2013.

Navy: Indian Naval Aviation received a

mobile launcher from the Launch Complex-

4 of Integrated Test Range (ITR).The 20-

metre-long Agni-II is a two-stage, solid-

Microsoft Developed New Sign Language

Translator-KINECT: US software

company Microsoft recently developed a

new cost-effective sign language translator

that converts signs into spoken and written

language - and vice versa. In collaboration

with researchers in China, Microsoft created

the Kinect Sign Language Translator, a

prototype system that understands the

gestures of sign language and converts them

to spoken and written language and vice

versa.
