WINDERMERE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, “Where Children Soar”

September 7, 2018

Welcome to our 2018 – 2019 school year!!! It’s been a busy first week getting start-

ed. The start of a new school year always brings a sense of excitement and antici-

pation. It is also one of reestablishment into routines and procedures for us all. Re-

adjusting takes a little time but soon it’s back to business as usual.

Parents/guardians, you should have received some important documents this

week. Some of the documents are informational and others need to be filled out.

For example, one of these documents called the Off-Site Activity(ies) Consent of

Parent/Guardian And Acknowledgement of Risk Form A is a walking field trip form

that provides students the opportunity to explore their local community. Another

important document for you to review is our WES School Code of Conduct. We

are requesting this year that you read, sign, and return the document for our rec-

ords. The Code of Conduct is present in your child’s planner as well. Please at-

tend to these forms and send them back to the school as soon as you can. Thank

you!

The Fair Notice Brochure provides information on procedures around ‘concerning’

behaviour. At WES, we will investigate all incidents and our response will be deter-

mined from the information gathered during the investigation. What parents need

to understand is that investigations take time. We must be careful to get all infor-

mation and to verify claims and witness accounts. Sometimes consequences

could be delayed, and you will not be notified as to our decisions involving a stu-

dent unless it is your child. Student safety is our number one guiding factor, but we

also understand that we need to treat all of our students and families with dignity

and respect for privacy. Always remember that it is your child’s teacher who is the

first line of communication!

As a means of tracking visitors to our school, we ask that you please enter at the

main entrance doors. As you enter you will be required to sign-in. This allows us to

know who is in the school at all times; when they’ve entered, and when they’ve

exited our school. Thank you!

Parents/guardians, now that school is in session we ask that you please do not

park in our bus loop at any time during the day. There is ample parking on the

south end of the building. Thank you!

Finally, please take some time to read through your child’s school planners. The

front pages of the planner have some very important information pertaining to

school operations that parents should be aware of (including, as mentioned, the

WES Code of Conduct). If you have any questions concerning any of the material

above, please stop in and ask.

WES is an amazing school with an amazing parent community. I’m looking for-

ward to growing our school more this upcoming year to continue to provide our

students a safe and fun place to learn! On behalf of the incredible staff at WES, I

want to welcome you all to a new school year!

Hello WES Families!

As I am sure many of you have noticed, WES is getting a significant renovation! The entire

exterior envelope of our school is being replaced. This includes the installation of new siding

and new exterior doors and windows. We are also getting a brand new fence on the east

and south end of our school, as well as a new fence line around our beautiful green space

(which is now complete and looking great!).

Though we do not have a definite date on when construction will be complete, we are an-

ticipating that it will go into late October. As such, there are a few things you should be

aware of:

The school will be noisy at times – the construction crew is very aware classes will be in

session during these times and will do their best to try and coordinate with our classroom

schedules to work on outside areas when students will be out of the classroom. However,

students should anticipate that it might be a little noisy at times.

Students are NOT to go near construction equipment – students will need to desist from

going to any construction equipment for the next two months. The construction crew will

make the greatest efforts to keep areas clear and, at times, sectioned off. Supervisors will

always be present to keep students away from certain areas.

Students are to NOT bother the construction workers – in spite of how friendly our student

population is :) we are asking them not to engage with the workers while they are doing

their job. This is for the safety of our students and the workers.

Classes will be temporarily displaced at times – when a classroom is prepped and ready

for the installation of new windows, classes will be required to relocate to our portable class-

room until the workers are done in that classroom. This process shouldn't take long, but it is

something students should prepare for.

We thank you for your patience regarding this renovation. In the end, our school is going to

look amazing!

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Thanks,

Joe Baron

Principal

A HUGE thank you to Mr. Steve Jackson (District Operations Supervisor) and Mr. Brian

Nickurak (WZ Operations Supervisor) for coming to WES on Wednesday September 4th to

discuss our schools renovation envelope. They discussed safety, showed a picture of what

they school will look like, and answered LOTS of questions from our students. The students

now understand that the school is getting a new ‘coat’ to keep us warm in the winter time.

Save the Date! WES Parents/Guardians! We are looking to hold our first round of Stu-

dent Led Conferences this year on November 28 and 29th, 2018.

These are also the second and third early dismissal days in the WZ

school calendar. As mentioned, these conferences will be student

led where your child will be prepared to present their learning to you.

It is very important that you attend one of these sessions with your

child! These conferences will be you seeing your child’s learning in

action. They are a means of communicating your child’s progress for

that first reporting term. Please plan on being present on ONE of

these set times:

Wednesday November 28, 2018 – 2:00 – 4:00 pm

Thursday November 29, 2018 – 5:00 – 7:00 pm

WES staff is hoping to book half a class on one session and half on

the other. If you are unable to make either of these sessions, another

date and time to review your child’s learning and discuss their pro-

gress will have to be scheduled.

More information to follow!

The WES Terry Fox Run will be happening on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 @ 2:00pm. This annual event commemorates a Canadian hero who fought to bring ad-ditional awareness to an illness that affects thousands of people each year. Terry Fox made it a goal to run across Canada to raise funds to help those with cancer and to support continued research on how fight against it. His fight and legacy live on to this day. At WES, students are encouraged to bring in $1 on this day to put towards the Terry Fox Foundation. These donations will be collected by their teachers.

PARKING LOT SAFETY AT WES

The bus area in front of the school is re-served for bus drop off and pick up only.

When dropping your child off at school, please park on the south side of the fence along the street or pull into the parking lot on the west side of the school. The driving lane on the east side of the school is re-served for Emergency Vehicles and SD#6 maintenance vehicles. Please do not pull into this lane to pick up or drop off your children as it is also extremely dangerous for our students who use this for a safe walking path as they exit the school grounds.

Thank you
