PRESIDENT’S LETTEREveryone give yourselves a round of applause! On behalf of YOUR Mercer Island Schools Foundation, we are happy to report exceeding the goal for last year’s 2016-2017 fundraising! As a community, we came together to once again reaffirm our commitment to education, raising the largest amount in our 36 year history: $1,955,167. The long-standing tradition of donors, volunteers, teachers, staff, administrators, and organizations on Mercer Island came together to invest in every Mercer Island student’s full potential. Year after year, this has produced an exceptional educational experience for our young Islanders, and strengthens the investment in our community.

We would like to acknowledge and thank one very special family who took a leadership role in our community with a sizeable donation to the spring BRIDGE2017 campaign to fulfill our goal. The family expressed a desire–and had the ability to be the solution–for their community. They made their gift to provide leadership and with the hope to be an inspiration for others.

As we look beyond the 2017-2018 academic year, Mercer Island faces significant changes from the state in how schools will be funded. The budget implications for Mercer Island remain unclear and ever changing. While the state continues to grapple with its responsibility to fund basic education, it remains critical that we are diligent in continuing to invest in the exceptional education we have built. We can all agree that our shared investment has paid dividends with respect to the opportunities provided to our youth and the value of our community.

We have two major fundraising campaigns this school year to support every student and teacher. The 2017 fall “All in for Kids” (Phone-A-Thon) has an immediate goal to raise $497,300 for strategic K-12 programs in core academics and enrichment for this academic year. Our spring campaign, BRIDGE2018, is an opportunity for the entire island community to continue to build on our shared success and bridge to an even brighter future. Basic education has never been our goal on Mercer Island, but rather, we must continue to invest in excellent education, which has defined our community for many years.

SIXTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES ADOPTIONFrom the very beginning of the year when we introduced the Cengage/National Geographic textbook to students and families, it has been met with nothing but excitement. The pictures leap off the page to en-gage students immediately in learn-ing about ancient civilizations and people from different backgrounds. An incredible moment happened in my classroom: As a student was flipping through the opening pages and table of contents to get a feel-ing for what civilizations we would be studying over the course of the year, he exclaimed, “Oh, it’s me! We get to study about Korea!” This speaks volumes about the power of representation in texts, particularly in ancient history. Often, survey courses of ancient civilizations can be very centered around how it matters to us as Americans, and thus, the focus has primarily been very Eurocentric. The Cengage text takes students all over the globe, giving them a chance to hopefully see themselves and their culture in the spotlight.

4 waysYOU FOSTER GREAT EDUCATION

NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDSTo prepare students for the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) by the state of Washington, we have renewed our emphasis on hands-on lab investiga-tions. Donations to the Mercer Island Schools Foundation provided signifi-cant funding to support these efforts with purchases of new laboratory equipment to expand science labs in capacity and capability. In Chemistry and Biology, new scales, hot plates and water baths allow simultaneous classes to engage in identical labs. This allows greater flexibility not only for teachers scheduling activities but also for counselors creating the master schedule for the school. A new scale

in Physics allows us, for the first time, to mass objects of over 2 kg without first breaking them up into smaller pieces. AP Biology ‘SpikerBoxes’ and electro-cardiograms simulate, stimulate and measure electrical impulses in living systems; these devices lead one student group to investigate their use as a lie-detector. Biotechnology has a new shaking-incubator for new lab investi-gations involving protein extraction. A Geiger counter in AP Environmental Science is used by students to demon-strate radioactivity, and this particular device will be useful in our Earth Sci-ence, Physics, and Chemistry courses as well.

continuedAUTHOR IN RESIDENCEThis Enrichment grant allowed students to work through the writing process and develop a published product with a professional author. Developing a class story required intensive collaboration. Each student took responsibility for writing one chapter in the book, with a student editing team overseeing all chapters. Students regularly worked together and met in chapter groups to ensure that one chapter made sense with another to build a cohesive piece. In the end, the class worked to plan setting, characters, plot, title, and cover art to create a published book available on Amazon. Beyond all of this important learning, the students had fun! This project inspired a few of my students to dream of becoming an author, and believe that it is possible (especially because they were working with a professional author!). This project cultivated imagination and love for writing, and students were incredibly excited and proud of their hard work and finished project! All students contributed to the story with a unique role, so this activity positively impacted all students in my class. It is an experience I believe they will never forget!

SIXTH GRADE LITERACY ADOPTIONWhy did we choose the SpringBoard curriculum? The sixth grade team needed a cohesive language arts reading and writing curriculum to ensure that all sixth graders were having a common experience in Language Arts. We decided to adopt this curriculum because it provides teachers with the necessary training and tools to help our students be proficient readers and writers. SpringBoard’s model of instruction provides thematic units that incorpo-rate close reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language skills, while emphasizing the strong con-nection between reading and writing. SpringBoard helps teachers address the rigor outlined by the Common Core and differentiate for our students based on their individual needs. SpringBoard has significantly helped our students become stronger writers by providing well-structured lessons that break down the components of several types of writing.

COOL BEANS CAFECool Beans Café, an in-house coffee shop, is where Adult Transition Program students ages 18-21 take orders for coffee, lattes and hot cider with delivery to Northwood Elementary School, the Transportation Department, Administration Building staff, and high school students and staff. The Cool Beans Cafe also caters for PTSA sponsored events such as Staff Appreciation Week. The invalu-able hands-on learning and the price-less life skills provide experience and enable students to find employment once they leave Mercer Island School District at age 21. Every student gains valuable life skills so they can live and participate in society to their maximum potential. According to one student employee, “Cool Beans helps me prepare for my future job!”

Funding requests for 2017-2018 provide leverage to ensure that strategically identified programs for grades K-12 in core academics and enrichment are available to every Mercer Island student. The funds that are requested this fall will be available to students and teachers for use in the classroom this school year.

PIGGY-BANK HELPERFourth-grade Island Park student, Spark saved his money in his piggy bank. Spark asked his mom to take the piggy bank to the “Breakfast of Champions.” The $23 inside was his own contribution to help our Mercer Island schools. Spark’s teacher, Ms. Ley, remarked, “Spark set an example for all children. His small gesture is a bigger example of things you cannot teach in a textbook.”

PAGLIACCI BENEFACTORI grew up on the Island, and always appreciated the strong, dynamic school system that is the heart of the community. Now that I am raising my kids here, I value it even more. The Mercer Island Schools Foundation is an important way to support our children. Our kids have directly benefitted from the generosity that many Islanders have given MISF over the years. What started as a plain white envelope with a $1,000 check safely tucked inside and addressed to the Mercer Island Schools Foundation grew into a gift to inspire others:

If you are not, what can we do?” On the last day of the school year, we made our donation. To say that it was a stretch would be an under-statement. It was a gift to fulfill the

I saw and understood the things that could be accomplished for Mercer Island children and how our gift could inspire the community. It is our hope that people will hear our story and ask, “Am I doing all I can?” We want our story to be your inspiration.

Patricia (Trish) Coffey, Ph.D., M.P.H., Class of 1979, program adviser and leader of the Health Technologies for Women and Children group at PATH; pioneered user-centered product development for reproductive and maternal newborn health technologies.

Leslie Hendricks Fall, M.D, Class of 1981, pediatrician/adjunct professor in the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College; co-founder/executive director of MedU, transforming medical education by bringing virtual case studies and online learning to medical school students.
