Immigration Done By: Dana Mitchell There are 3 main categories of immigrants: Family Class Immigrants (a permanent resident of Canada can sponsor immigration from their mother country) Independent/Economic Immigrants (any other form of immigrant wanting to enter Canada for any other reason, they are economically independent) Refugee Immigrants (immigrants in need of protection) Who? Why? Immigration Reasons: Opportunities & Jobs To escape poverty, starvation, and for hopes of a better life in this new country In search of farm lands, seeking land Canadas economic promise To escape from religion or political threats B/c of Canadian land agents or land recruiters anxious to fill the west with farmers Fleeing civil wars Political unrest Natural disasters Where they settled? Some settled in towns and cities Others worked in factories, mines and lumber camps Many were farmers who turned the Prairie region into wheat fields The western provinces were settled mainly by the Asian immigrants from China, Japan and India. Canadas national railways, which joined the east and west coasts and opened up the interior for settlement was built mainly by immigrants of Asian and Japanese descent. When? During what time period: From the early years (1600) to current times, immigration has played a huge role in the population and the culture of Canada. This country, Canada, is described as a multicultural nation, meaning that they are not of any one cultural background, race, or heritage. This vast multicultural diversity of our great country is a result directly due to centuries of immigration. This huge immigration throughout the years, had played and continues to play a key role in shaping the character of Canadian society. All Canadians share an immigrant past, therefore there would be no Canada without immigration. How? Immigrant came to Canada through a variety of different ways. Some of which are by: Boat Cargo Ship Horse By foot It is said that Canada is the nation of immigrants. Multicultural diversity is a result of centuries of immigration Canadians today reflect a vast diversity of cultural heritages and racial groups. Only about 16% of today's Canadian citizens were born outside Canada. Main Nationalities that Immigrated to Canada: British Scottish French English Irish Americans Europeans What did they find in Canada? Equal rights More opportunities Land, and wide open spaces Economic promise Support Freedom A great country
