There is a lot of pomp and circumstance that goes into the ordination and installation of a newly minted pastor. There are a lot of high hopes for con-gregations as they call a new pastor into their midst. I myself am excited and eager for the task set before me as your new pastor. I appreciate all of you who have graciously encouraged and wel-comed me and my family to Immanuel. The welcom-ing celebration here at Immanuel was truly a blessing and encouraging. As I begin to type up my first “From the Pastor’s Desk” for our newsletter I have been racking my brain for encouraging words to share with you. I got it! “We are all beggars, this is true.” How’s that for encourage-ment!? These words are purportedly the final words of Martin Luther, written down on a scrap of paper in his hand and found in his pocket at the time of his death. This, at first blush, seem like horrible last words. These words would seem that way if you don’t understand what it means to be a beggar before Jesus.

Beggars at the feet of Je-sus are blessed over and over again in the Gospels. Beggars receive sight, are given the ability to walk, hear, and speak for the first time in their lives! Most importantly beggars receive the forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life. While it is great to cele-brate and anticipate God’s blessings, it is wise for us to remember that even if we find it hard to have a reason to celebrate, God is still for us. We might be broken down by life but if that leads us to be beg-gars before the Lord then we are still in a pretty good place. All of life, the ups and downs, are a gift from God that lead us to trust the One who comes to beggars like us and does miraculous things. I anticipate many great things for us here at Im-manuel as I serve in your midst. Not because of me, but because we are all beggars before the One who provides blessings beyond what we can think of or even imagine. To God be the glory,

Do you have a few hours that you could spare to help with this worthy cause? You probably

have lots of questions and we’d love to talk to you about this. Please call Nancy Greene at 893-3172, or if you’d rather email me, my email ad-dress is [email protected].

Thank you for your con-sideration.

Living for Jesus

Martin Luther said, “If someone would knock on my heart and ask, ‘Who lives here?’ I would say, ‘Martin Luther once lived here, but he has moved out and Jesus has moved in.’” Martin Luther lived for Jesus. In Galatians 2:20 the apostle Paul wrote that he, too lived for Jesus. “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by the faith in the Son of God.”

Who or what do you live for? If we live for ourselves and the things of the world, we will focus our attention and energy on amassing more and more things. It is easy for money and possessions to become overly important because our society tells us that more is better and that happiness and success can only be achieved by having the newest and best things. To find happiness and success, we work long and hard.

King Solomon, who was wealthy and wise, tried almost everything and found no satisfaction with things of the world. In Ecclesiastes, he tells us that he tried wine and women; he built houses, gardens, and parks; he bought slaves, herds and flocks, and amassed silver and gold. “I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure...Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11). Regarding money, Solomon wrote, “Whoever loves mon-ey never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied is never satisfied with his income. This too is mean-ingless” (vs. 5:10).

In closing the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon wrote, “’Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judge-ment…” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). The only thing that finally gave Solomon’s life purpose was living for God. Likewise, we as Christians understand that Jesus is the only person who can give us lasting peace, comfort, security. He alone meets our needs. Jesus’ tremendous sacrifice showed us His love for us and His love compels us to love Him and live for Him. Filled with Jesus’ presence in our lives, we are empowered to overcome the pull of the world.

Coming Soon: “Disciples Living as Grace-filled Stewards”

How do you answer the question, “Who are you?” Most often we identify ourselves by our relationships—I’m a father or mother, son or daughter, husband or wife—or our profession—I’m a carpenter or teacher or businessperson or work in an-other of the myriad of professions now available to all. As believers our identity is in Jesus. The Holy Spirit has called us by the Gospel, and we believe. Through God’s gracious gift of Baptism, the Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts so that we believe that Jesus is the Son of God Who came to earth to save us from sin, death, and the devil.

Our stewardship emphasis this fall, “Disciples Living as Grace-filled Stewards” focuses on our identity as disciples and stewards and will lead us into 2019. It is humbling to realize that God has created us and redeemed us through His Son, Jesus, and sustains us, calls us and gives us the privilege of being His disciples and stewards. The definitions of disciple and steward are different, but the ultimate purpose of both is to serve God by helping all people come to faith in Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Through Word and Sacraments, the Holy Spirit changes and molds us to be disciples and stewards. It is not by our own power or intellect that we fill these two different roles. By grace, God enables us to grow in faith and service to Him. Submitting our will to His, we are led and guided in our service.

Disciple: A disciple is identified as a “follower” and a “learner.” Just as Jesus called His 12 disciples to follow Him, He calls and chooses us to follow (John 15:16). A disciple is someone who continually strives to know more about Jesus. We learn about Jesus as we daily read His Word, attend Bible studies, attend worship services, participate in the Lord’s Table, and spend time in prayer. Disciples try to make more disciples by helping others grow in Christ. A disciple says, “Here am I! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8)

Steward: A steward is a manager of someone else’s property according to the desire and wishes of the owner. Because God has created and owns all things, we are God’s stewards. God uses us as His stewards by enabling and equipping us to use our time, talents, and money in ways that help others hear the Gospel. By His grace, God entrusts us with time to manage wisely so we are available to be used in His service. In the same way, we are given talents that can be developed so we can be effective in places where we can serve. God gives us the ability to work and make an income, and we are to manage the money we’ve earned faithfully and responsibility so we can give generously to support ministries that share the Good News and to help those in need.

We pray that God will bless our stewardship emphasis and that He will continually empower us to be used as His tools to help extend His kingdom.

There will be Devotional booklets and bible study lessons available for you to use during this emphasis. Watch for this and more information on the narthex ledge or in the hall by the multipurpose room.

Blessings on your Stewardship Journey!

THE PIPE ORGAN The façade pictured above hides the numerous pipes used to make the music. These pipes range in

size from small to large! The pipe chamber includes 1,883 pipes that were moved from the previous

building to our current building in 1958. Additional pipes were added in a 1983. The number of pipes

is now around 2000. These pipes are an assortment of metal and wood, round and square. Each pipe

requires a leather pouch that provides the air to make the sound. These leather pouches were last

replaced in 1960. The leather is now 58 years

old and is in poor condition. New leather will

be imperative very soon. The replacement of

the leather is an intricate project. The rank of

pipes will need to be removed to allow access.

And as the picture to the right shows, these

pipes are close together. (The picture is not of

ration.)

Wondering how to be a witness of Jesus Christ in your everyday life? Immanuel is hosting a day long workshop, Saturday December 15, on wit-

nessing. The Every One His Witness workshop considers the real world con-

text in which Lutherans find themselves as witnesses of Jesus Christ. It puts

sound doctrine into practical action for sharing the faith with the people

whom God has placed alongside His witnesses in their everyday lives. The

workshop will be a blend of video based-teaching and group practice and re-

flection. This workshop is free for Immanuel Church and School members. Please reg-

ister by December 1st, so that we can make sure we have enough workbooks

and food for everyone. Guests from sister congregations are welcome, a $12

donation to cover the cost of materials is suggested.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Child care can be arranged per re-

quest. For more information contact Pastor Garcia at the church office or by
