“I the LORD Do All These Things” by Peter J. Weller In chapter 45, Isaiah describes how God used Emperor Cyrus of Persia to liberate the ancient Israelites from their captivity in Babylon and permit them to return to their homeland. He writes, “Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him— and the gates shall not be closed: I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you my know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. . . . “I surname you, though you do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the LORD do all these things.” (Isaiah 45:1-7) In 560 B. C., Cyrus became the Persian Emperor at about age 30. His reign lasted some 30 years until his death in 529 B. C. He enlarged the Empire to its greatest size. Its borders extended from the Aegean Sea on the West to the Indus River on the East, and it included all the countries today in the Southwest Asian region from Turkey to Pakistan. Cyrus gained control of the Babylonian kingdom, whose territories included the present-day countries of Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Israel. By 587 B. C, the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, had defeated the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah and forced the ancient Israelites into exile and a 50-year captivity in Babylonia. After conquering the Babylonians, Cyrus freed the Israelites in 539 B. C. and allowed them to return to their homeland. He also funded the reconstruction of their temple in Jerusalem. Cyrus is mentioned 22 times in the Old Testament where, without exception, he is unconditionally praised. Isaiah writes not so much about Cyrus as about God’s power to intervene in world affairs. God refers to Cyrus as “his anointed,” and this term confers great significance upon Cyrus as an instrument of God’s will. Prophets often refer to the coming Messiah as “The Anointed One.” Therefore, one might ask if Cyrus merits Messiah status?

We traveled with a special group from Immanuel and I think others noticed our fellowship and felt our genuine commitment to serve and spread God’s love throughout our adventures. Please feel free to ask questions or see pictures anytime. Thank you again and a special thanks to Pastor Howard for sharing your homeland with us.

Wear RED on Sunday, October 29th Reformation Sunday is October 29th and we remember our Lutheran heritage when Martin Luther nailed his
95 theses to the church door 500 years ago. The reformation lasted between the years 1517 and 1546. “After
Luther’s death Luther’s followers struggled with questions that threatened to split the evangelical move-
ment. Fifty years after the presentation of the Augsburg Confession, they drafted a solution to those ques-
tions and pointed to other writings that defined what they believed. This Formula of Concord and those writ-
ings were published as The Book of Concord (1580) and form the core of Lutheran teaching and shape its
preaching.”* Pastor Howard has a copy of The Book of Concord if you would like to look at it. Let’s wear
red on Reformation Day to celebrate our Lutheran roots!
* The Lutheran Handbook II (Minneapolis: Augsburg Fortress, 2007) 23.

generosity. Include the gift of an ornament to each
person on your Christmas list. The Advent Tree
display will be out before you know it.

“God’s Work. Our Hands.” Project Sunday On Sunday, September 10th Immanuel Lutheran participated in Servant Project Sunday along with other Evangelical Lutheran Churches in America. The youth in Faith Formation packaged school bags for Lutheran World Relief. That afternoon 27 youth and adults went out and assisted our own Immanuel family and the Washington community. We trimmed shrubs, weeded, cleaned a dryer vent, changed batteries, packed food boxed at HACAP, and washed windows at the Sherriff’s department, City Hall (including the fire and police departments), and at the Washington County Ambulance. Many of us gathered back at church and enjoyed relaxing fellowship and ice cream. Thank you to the youth who did an outstanding job packing school bags. Thank you to the 27 volunteers who chose to spend their Sunday afternoon in service to others. See our Facebook page for more photos.

“I the LORD Do All These Things” by Peter J. Weller Professor James K. Mead of Northwestern College at Orange City, Iowa, wrote that Cyrus “was the true power on the planet, and he apparently thought so himself, if his famous edict [allowing all exiled peoples to return to their homelands] is any indication. This edict . . . states, ‘I am Cyrus, king of the world, great king, legitimate king, king of Babylon.’ But, . . . he was only an instrument in God's hand. He was anointed, yes, but only for the specific task of releasing the captive peoples.” There is nothing in the historical record to tell us whether Cyrus heard the voice of God, or realized that God cleared his path to conquest and victory, or that releasing the captive peoples was a response to God’s calling. Unquestionably, the Persian conquest of Babylonia made possible to release the captive Israelites, but it would not necessarily follow that Cyrus would, or should, release them. Illustrations abound in the Bible of God’s intervention in human affairs, of miracles, and of outcomes that defy rational explanation, making it easy to believe that such events did not occur as described or are figments of imagination or result from a lack of scientific understanding. Yet today, people recover from catastrophic events in which they should have died, or benefit from the miracles of modern medicine, or suffer survivor’s guilt for missing a flight on the plane that then crashed. There are events of Biblical proportions such as the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, which few people saw coming or could have predicted, or Category 5 hurricanes that veer this way instead of that, or stall in place and dump a year’s worth of rain there in four days. The stained glass window on the southeast wall of the sanctuary depicts the hand of God reaching down from heaven representing God’s power over the earth. God’s power touches us all whether we know or feel it or refuse to believe or recognize it. God’s power assures that right prevails, that justice triumphs, that good overcomes evil— in God’s time, not ours. God’s words to Cyrus are God’s words to leaders today, “I surname you, even though you do not know me. I am the LORD, and there is no other.”
October 2017, LSI Bulletin/Newsletter Article and Story Warming Hearts with God’s Love and a Good Pair of Mittens Far too often, there are children who arrive at LSI’s Beloit and Bremwood Residential Treatment Centers with almost nothing in their possession. And for children or youth who have been in the foster care system, it’s not uncommon for them to arrive with everything they own in a single garbage bag. We give thanks for Iowa congregations because you faithfully respond to these needs, year after year! As winter approaches, LSI relies on your loving support to meet the demands for hats, gloves, and mittens for children and youth at Beloit and Bremwood. It’s important for us to give children the opportunity to shop for their favorite new winter coat. Because of that, we ask that you please not donate articles of clothing. With your generous financial donation, each child will have the simple joy of buying their new coat, knowing that they are loved and cherished. Your church has likely received or will soon be receiving a letter inviting you to participate in LSI’s hats and mittens appeal. If you would like more information, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at [email protected]. Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.
Healing through Harmony Jaden’s life changed when he was 5 years old. His father unexpectedly passed away, and through his grief, Jaden’s connection to his mother became strained and he struggled to manage his anger at home. He was placed in LSI’s Beloit Residential Treatment Center in Ames when he was 10, and he remembers being introduced to Spiritual Life. The voluntary LSI program connects youth in residential treatment with faith-based art, music, and film. It is there to serve as a safe space for children to open up about their emotions and get the support they need to thrive. “I always knew I loved to sing and I liked music,” Jaden says. “Songs made me feel better, and music allowed me to express myself.” Jaden eventually relocated to LSI’s Bremwood Residential Treatment Center in Waverly, where he reconnected with Pastor Dennis Bauer, the director of the Spiritual Life program. “Jaden is one of the few kids who would actively set up lunch appointments with me,” Pastor Dennis says. “He’s really benefitted from being able to talk during the day.” Having access to a support network and a trusting relationship with Pastor Dennis has helped Jaden feel empowered to make a positive change during his time at Bremwood. Now 14, Jaden’s finding his faith through music, and he’s learning how to talk about his trauma and become a role model for other Iowa children in residential treatment. Jaden has now been adopted into a loving family. As he finishes up his treatment at Bremwood, his family is there to visit and worship with him, and Jaden is enjoying being a new big brother in his family.

Stan is a retired farmer/electrician. Born & raised on a farm north of Burlington and attended a one-room school. Sharol is a retired seamstress and is still working as the church secretary at 1st Augustana Lutheran Church in Lockridge. Sharol was raised a “city girl” in Burlington. Stan & Sharol were married in 1964 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington. In 1967 Stan was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years, one year in SE Asia. After 43 years on the farm north of Lockridge, it was time to give up the big house and move to town. With family in Washington, it is a natural progression. They moved in August. They have two sons—Brad (Tricia) in Washington and Jeff (Lisa) just recently moved to Cedar Rapids. They have six grandchildren.
Ecclesiastical (Church) Balloting The church council has adopted a Holy Spirit led approach to raising up leaders for Immanuel Lutheran. We invite the
congregation to enter into a time of prayer asking God to lead your thoughts to persons who have spiritual gifts in lead-
ership and vision to serve as church council members for 2018-2020. On Wednesday, October 18th and Sunday, Octo-
ber 22nd during a special offering we will receive those names God has lifted up to you. The nominating committee will
then contact each of those persons, to prayerfully consider serving on church council. At the annual meeting (November
12th), we will vote from the pool of candidates that have prayerfully accepted the nomination.
Prayers for Leaders:
“Faithful God, you raise up leaders for your Church in every generation. Guide our thoughts to the persons
you desire to lead Immanuel Lutheran Church in the next years. Give them the will to serve and peace to
leave the final election in your hands. We ask this for the sake of Jesus, our Lord. Amen”
WELCOME to Immanuel Lutheran!!
Beverly Bailey, Kelli Gapinski, and Sharol and Stan Kroll have become part of the Body of Christ here with us at Immanuel Lutheran on Sunday, September 24th. What a joy it
is to have you journey with us as we worship our Triune God and discover the deep, saving love our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ has for us. “We welcome you into Christ’s
family known as Immanuel Lutheran and into the mission we share: giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God’s creative and redeeming word to all the world.”
Greetings Immanuel Lutheran! My name is Kelli Gapinski, and I am proud 2017 graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. (Go Norse!) I am originally from Clear Lake, Iowa where my family still resides. I am a first-year special education teacher here in Washington at Lincoln Elementary. Though it certainly has felt like a roller coaster already, I believe that teaching is my calling. I feel very thankful for the tremendous support within the school and community. In my spare time, I love to do yoga, hike, participate in Habitat for Humanity, and spend time with my loved ones. Thank you to all who helped me feel welcome already, and I look forward in becoming more involved with this community.
I was born and raised in Aitkin, Minnesota. (120 miles north of Minneapolis) In 1969 I married an Iowa guy and moved here to Iowa. I lived and worked as an educator here for 35 years. In 2004 I took early retirement and returned to Minnesota to help my aging parents. I stayed there for thirteen years and in late May of this year I returned to Iowa to be near my 2 children and 2 grandsons. I was a member of Immanuel for 30 years and it only made sense to me to return to this church family. While some are missing it is great getting reacquainted and joining in worship and service to our God. But, you need to know I love Minnesota!!!!!

I have been volunteering all my life in one way or another. I enjoy volunteering at church because I get to work with so many wonderful people. I really enjoy the RAGBRI committee, soup suppers and fellowship events. I did a lot when the boys were in Luther League and helped start the fellowship committee many years ago. I slowed down over the years and decided to start in again and it has been great volunteering at church again. Steve Vetter
