“Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen

the Lord!’”

- John 20:18

The whole of St. John’s account of the gospel and the whole of Chris-

tian life is transformation and more specifically transformation from

darkness to light, from unbelieving to believing. When Mary Magda-

lene first arrived to the empty tomb she arrived under the cover of dark-

ness (darkness symbolizing unbelief throughout much St. John’s ac-

count of the gospel). Upon discovering the tomb to be empty she runs

away in terror to announce to Peter and “the other disciple” that Jesus’

body has been stolen.

Upon this most disturbing news, Peter and “the other disciple” along

with Mary hurry back to the tomb. Mary did not go into the tomb, but

rather she “stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent

over to look into the tomb’ and she saw two angels in white…” How

often do we stand outside of the tomb weeping? How many of our

friends and neighbors are standing outside weeping over the many

cares and heavy burdens of this dark and lonely world?

The resurrection is not something that can be figured out by plain rea-

son… resurrection is not a logical answer. Apart from faith, when we

look at this world and when we look at death what we see are endings,

“All good things must come to an end,” the saying goes. The party

ends, friends move away, there comes a time in everyone’s life when

it’s time to “hang up the cleats and call it a career.” By plain reason

and natural human understanding the empty tomb looks like the last

verse of Don McLean’s song American Pie, “And the three men I ad-

mire most: the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last

train for the coast the day the music died.” Truly ‘The World is Not

Enough’ (to borrow the title of the James Bond Movie). If all there

was to life in this world is what we see, then it would seem to me as

though life is the biggest and most cruel practical joke ever played…

can you imagine if every day was April Fools Day? How could we

live? Our whole lives would be spent watching over our shoulder at

every turn. This is what the empty tomb looks like apart from the

knowledge of and faith in the resurrection: it looks like one big practi-

cal joke… it looks like God abandoning us.

Page 3: The Immanuel Chimes April 2014 - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/immanuellutheranchurch/documents/04 Apri… · The Immanuel Chimes April 2014 IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH A Mission

Had Jesus not shown up to call her by name Mary would have continued

in her grief and sorrow. It is not enough to show up and simply “look in

the tomb;” it takes a messenger to reveal the truth of the empty tomb

and we are called to be just that messenger, that angel (the word angel in

the Greek and Hebrew also means ‘messenger’). We as a church, as the

body of Christ on earth, have a job and a mission to do. When we see

people looking into the empty tombs of life, we must be bold to reveal

the resurrected body of Christ to them. It wasn’t until Mary heard the

voice of Jesus calling her by name that her eyes were opened and she

was able to look at the empty tomb through the eyes of faith and she re-

ceived the hope and truth which permitted her to exclaim with a joyful

and jubilant heart, “Rabbouni! (Teacher!)”

God grant you the eyes of faith and a joyful Eastertide.

Your Partner in Ministry,

Pastor Kris

Special Sunday

School Day

Join us during the Sunday School

hour (9:15AM) on Palm Sunday

(April 13th) for a special intergenera-

tional Sunday School class. We will

reenact Jesus’ triumphal entry into the

holy city, have special activities, and an interactive

lesson as we begin Holy Week and make the annual

journey of faith to the cross and tomb of Jesus.

Journey The good news is: I had no trouble deciding what to write about this

month. The bad news is: I had no trouble deciding what to write about

this month.

Cindy and I have been introduced to the club no one ever wants to be a

member of. The Cancer Club. Remembering back, 15 or 20 years ago

we took a trip to the Grand Canyon. It was my first time there. When I

walked up to the rim and looked over the edge, it literally took my breath

away and I wanted to hang onto something. Everything stopped and my

mind was frozen. That was the same sensation I felt when the doctor

walked into Cindy's room and said, "this is serious, there is a tumor and it

is malignant." The breath was drawn out of me and I wanted to find

something to hold on to and once again my mind froze. What a scary

word cancer is, if you have had it said to you or someone you love, I

don't need to explain further, if you haven't, it can't be described to you.

There were a lot of things that could have been asked at that point. But

the only one that seemed to matter to us was how do we proceed. The

doctors are assuring us that this is a very curable cancer. Our mind set is

that we are confident that it will be cured. Cindy is half way through the

treatment at this point. She is doing really well. Her spirits are high.

We are so blessed to be surrounded by a family, church family and a

"cancer" family, those who have been though it. You have all embraced

us every step of the way. Your cards, calls, gifts, hugs, smiles, emails and

text messages HAVE made the difference. It is overwhelming, comfort-

ing and oh so humbling to be in the light of your love.

So what's to say about this?

Don't neglect your health screenings. Obviously cancer and other serious

health issues are easier to treat in the earlier stages. Don't be afraid to

take your health concerns to your doctor.

If you end up in the hospital, be nice to everyone that works there. From

the people who take out the trash to the lead doctors, they are people just

like you and me, who want to help you get better and be treated with

kindness and respect.

God gave us to each other to care for each other, to pray for each other

Page 5: The Immanuel Chimes April 2014 - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/immanuellutheranchurch/documents/04 Apri… · The Immanuel Chimes April 2014 IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH A Mission

and to love each other as he has loved us. I can't overstate how much we

have appreciated your concern and love this past month. Please continue

to pray for Cindy and all others in need of healing, it does matter.

Love, John

Easton Neighborhood Markets

Immanuel continues to work with the other churches in Easton to supply

food to the neighbors in the Easton Community who are struggling with

their food supply. The Community Food Bank sends us food for over

400 families on the first Tuesday of every month. April 1st we will meet

at noon and start distributing at 1:00PM and finish at 4:00PM. Starting

May 6th we will meet at 1:00PM and start distributing at 2:00PM and

finish at 5:00PM.

What a blessing each distribution allows fellow Christians to work to-

gether serving those in need of the food. The food distributors would

like to thank the Easton Presbyterian Church for purchasing aprons for us

to wear. The crew all match in bright yellow aprons. Sending a special

thank you to Mary Louise Oliver for washing them all for us.

The March food give away served over 2,000 people from 485 house-

holds with 30 volunteers, 9 from St Jude, 7 from Immanuel, 6 from

Easton Presbyterian, 5 from NewLife, and 3 from New Beginnings

Church. Each month our numbers vary but we always have enough help.

Thanks be to God!

Conversation Circles

Our Conversation Circles, helping those who want to improve their

English speaking and reading, are going great. We have a group meet-

ing Wednesday evenings before Soup Supper. At the moment it is all

women; we know of a few men who would like to join a men's group.

We need a couple of men to volunteer to coach a men's group. Train-

ing and support will be provided; some ability to speak everyday con-

versational Spanish is helpful but not required. Please call Betty

Moore, 859-0306, if you want to know more or observe our Wednes-

day evening group. Several children are coming with their parent and

help with child care would be greatly appreciated, We meet from 6-

6:30 pm before Soup Supper. After Easter we begin meeting again at

6:30PM and finish at 7:30PM in Grace Hall.

Thank You Immanuel

Thank you all for your prayers and cards to my mother, Cecilia Peder-

sen. The cards have brightened up my mom's days. She is continuing to

recover at Palm Village in Reedley.

Thank you for your blessings, Christie Pettitt

Dear Immanuel, just want to say a huge THANK YOU for all your well

wishes during my radiation and chemotherapy sessions. I am humbled by

hearing from so many of you. God bless all of you for being my church

family. You are all important to me, and I thank God for each and every

one of you. So far so good with my treatment, not too many side effects.

My last day of treatment will be a celebration. That's April 8th!!! And we

are praying for and expecting full recovery at that time. But please keep

the prayers and good thoughts coming. We won't know for a while after

treatment ends if it was successful or if we need another round of six more

weeks.

Peace, Cindy Jensen

UCLA Relay for Life

Dear Friends, Family, and Loved Ones,

For the third year in a row, I've decided to be a team captain for Relay

For Life at UCLA! Like most of us, I know too many people whose lives

have been touched by cancer. That’s why I’ve joined with the American

Cancer Society to help save lives by participating in Relay For Life.

At Relay For Life, we celebrate loved ones who have won their battle

against cancer, remember those who are no longer with us, and fight back

against this disease that takes so much from so many. In addition to fund-

ing lifesaving research, every dollar raised helps the American Cancer

Society provide services to cancer patients in need and brings us one step

closer to a cure.

I have joined the American Cancer Society on a mission to save lives and

create a world with more birthdays by participating in the Relay For Life

on April 26th and 27th at UCLA. I am determined to make a difference,

and I hope you will join me. Please, support me in my efforts by visiting

my personal web page by clicking the link below and making a donation.

Every dollar raised brings us one dollar closer to a cure, and to a world

with more birthdays. If you would rather donate with cash or check, that

is greatly appreciated as well! I have listed all of my contact information

below. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. Thank

you in advance for all of your help and support!

Panther Baseball Academy

The mission of the Panther Baseball Academy (PBA) is to pro-

mote the game of baseball to athletes ages 10 -18 in the attend-

ance area of Washington Unified School District including K-8

districts (Washington Colony, Orange Center, Pacific Union and

West Park). The PBA will provide a local and affordable way

for families interested in pursuing opportunities in the game of

baseball. The PBA is not intended to take away from current

baseball programs or any other activities but rather enhance op-

portunities for exposure to our original “National Pastime”.

The PBA will strive to create a positive environment. Listed be-

low are the core outcomes we will strive to attain:

1. Develop and foster positive attitudes and a strong work

ethic.

2. Develop the ability to work as a team member.

3. Develop a respect for self, team and the game of baseball.

4. Develop the attitude of “Pursuing Victory with Honor”.

5. Develop the drive to “Compete”

We believe these core principles can be applied to “life” and will

benefit all of our kids.

The program will begin with clinics on Sundays (grades 4th

through 8th, 12:30pm – 2:00pm) beginning March 23nd at

Washington Union Varsity baseball field. The clinics are free

of charge!

Our goal is to expand the clinic schedule in late April/early May

with the possibilities of putting some teams together for tourna-

ments in June and July (depending on level on interest at each

age group).

Relay for Life

Dear Friends, Family, and Loved Ones,

For the second year in a row, I've decided to be a team captain for Relay

For Life at UCLA! Like most of us, I know too many people whose lives

have been touched by cancer. That’s why I’ve joined with the American

Cancer Society to help save lives by participating in Relay For Life.

At Relay For Life, we celebrate loved ones who have won their battle

against cancer, remember those who are no longer with us, and fight back

against this disease that takes so much from so many. In addition to fund-

ing lifesaving research, every dollar raised helps the American Cancer

Society provide services to cancer patients in need and brings us one step

closer to a cure.

I have joined the American Cancer Society on a mission to save lives and

create a world with more birthdays by participating in the Relay For Life

on May 4th and 5th at UCLA. I am determined to make a difference, and

I hope you will join me. Please, support me in my efforts by visiting my

personal web page by clicking the link below and making a donation.

Every dollar raised brings us one dollar closer to a cure, and to a world

with more birthdays. If you would rather donate with cash or check, that

is greatly appreciated as well! I have listed all of my contact information

below. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. Thank

you!

HOPE ♥
