FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“Jesus cured many who were sick

with various diseases.”

Mark 1:29-39

Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings

In next Sunday’s Gospel, (February 14) we

continue to hear Mark report the miraculous

healings that Jesus performed in Galilee. The

Gospel begins with Jesus healing a man with

leprosy. Leprosy is a disfiguring, infectious skin

disease that has been surrounded by many social

and religious taboos throughout history. Mark's

Gospel tells us that after this healing, it became

difficult for Jesus to travel freely. There are

several possible explanations for this. There might

have been concern about the repercussions of

Jesus' breach of social and religious norms. In

touching the man with leprosy, Jesus made

himself unclean. Mark's narrative, however, leads

to the conclusion that Jesus' movement was

hampered by his popularity. Despite his

instructions, the cured man spread the word about

Jesus' healing power. Even when Jesus was in

deserted places, people sought him out in search

of his healing.

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46: The Law regarding leprosy is

given to Moses and Aaron.

1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1: Paul urges the Corinthians

to imitate him as he imitates Christ. Mark 1:40-45: Jesus cures a person with leprosy, who

reports his cure to everyone.

A Pilgrim’s Progress In a world that is threatening the lives of women and children with renewed vigor (i.e. U.S. government funding to abortion industry giant Planned Parenthood, reversing the ban on U.S. funding of foreign organizations providing abortions), undermining women’s sports programs, and renewing legal action against the Little Sisters of the Poor and their attempts to defend our Catholic beliefs, last weekend helped to demonstrate a path forward. Your support of the St. Hedwig Haus of Hospitality benefit (noted elsewhere) was amazing. As was the presentation by Mike Spencer of Project Life Voice to students from three area parishes and the EIU Newman Catholic Center at our IC Parish Center. PLV is a “Gospel-driven human rights organization that equips and inspires pro-life ambassadors of all ages to speak compellingly and act sacrificially on behalf of the most vulnerable and abandoned among us.” Mike reminded us about the unambiguous teaching of science that from the earliest stages of development the preborn are distinct, living, and whole human beings. The science of embryology tells us a new distinct, human life begins at conception. The preborn, with a unique DNA, can have a different blood type, race, or gender from the body of it’s mother. While there is a long history of trying to define entire classes of people out of existence because they don’t look like “us” (Jews, Blacks, the handicapped), no human rights campaign has ever been successful without its victims being seen. John’s Gospel (8:32) reminds us that it is The Truth that sets us free. The science of embryology is compelling. As we read this bulletin there are only four differences between you and me and the embryo we once were. 1)Size (which doesn’t equal value) 2) Level of Development (changes thru life) 3) Location (how does where we are determine who we are?) 4) Degree of dependency (does this render us disposable?) One takeaway from the presentation was a great reminder of the Catholic principle that there can be no conflict between Faith and reason. Truth always leads us to Jesus Christ (because that’s one of His names!). There are approximately 700 surgical abortion clinics in the United States. Most of them are ran by men profiting from young women and their children. There are almost 3000 U.S. pregnancy centers almost all ran by women at no charge to those they serve. As Justice Scalia once said: “I don’t attack people, I attack ideas. And some very good people have some very bad ideas.” Life is always a Good Idea. May the Lord continue to fill us with both!

For the Year of St. Joseph:

FORTY HOURS DEVOTION The Forty Hours Devotion is an opportunity to gather before the Blessed Sacrament and to pray before the Lord in Eucharistic Exposition. It gives us time to deepen our appreciation of the importance of the mystery of the Eucharist in our lives. It begins with the celebration of Mass, after which the Blessed Sacrament is ex-posed for scheduled hours over a period of a few days. The faithful are given the opportu-nity to assemble in prayer before the exposed Blessed Sacrament. Forty Hours Devotion will end with the celebration of Mass. This devotion gives us the opportunity to witness to our belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist in praise and thanksgiving as we are sanctified by the worship of our God.

THANK YOU from St Hedwig

(1174-1273)

I always think of her as the patroness of the Culture of Life. She was a woman of faith, a loving wife and mother, and a friend of the poor. A bit of a mystic (even in life her prayers inspired Divine miracles), she was also never afraid to get her hands (and feet) dirty. While she never wanted for the ne-cessities of life for herself and her loved ones, she was committed to making sure no one else ever did without as well. From feeding the hungry, nursing the sick, to marching onto the battlefield to secure peace, she was a witness to the Kingdom of God. Today good work continues through her pa-tronage through our Three Catholic Worker houses. They are located in Charleston but they serve women and children from near and far. They provide a home for those who have nowhere else to turn. Our recent Toot ‘n Tell It fundraiser in Teu-topolis, (amidst snow and pandemic) was our most successful event to date. Over $17,000 was raised from your generosity in buying raffle tickets, soup, delicious fudge, and amazing donations of time and treasure. Your kindness to people (like St. Hedwig herself) that you will most likely never meet this side of Heaven, is overwhelming. As our board chair, Roy Lanham, always says: “we can’t “fix” the women and chil-dren who come to St. Hedwig, but we do “wrap them in Love!” May all those whose prayers and sacrifices make possible this life-changing ministry feel “wrapped in love” as well! - Fr john
