THANK YOU to the hundreds of IHM households who made pledges to the 2016

Archbishop’s Annual Appeal! We have exceeded our parish goal for the Appeal in

pledges! If you made a pledge to the Annual Appeal back in January, you should be

receiving payment reminders by mail or by email; please do your best to fulfill that

pledge by year’s end.

100% OF THE FUNDS received over our par ish goal will r eturn to us here at

IHM without any assessment from the Archdiocese. That means that every dollar giv-

en to the AAA is worth about $1.30 in money contributed to the Sunday offertory!

Your gift helps the Archdiocese and our parish!

IF YOU HAVE NOT YET made your pledge to the 2016 AAA, please do so soon.

To make your pledge online, simply go to http://appeal.archatl.com. Please be sure to

choose IHM as your designated parish!

In the second collection today, we are

supporting Pope Francis in his charitable

works. The Peter’s Pence Collection is

taken up worldwide to support our broth-

ers and sisters on the margins of society,

including victims of war, oppression, and

natural disasters. In this Jubilee Year of

Mercy, the collection is an opportunity to

join with Pope Francis and be a witness of

charity to our suffering brothers and sis-

ters. Please be generous in today’s collec-

tion.

Our second collection next weekend will

go to the IHM Debt Reduction Fund.

Using Insurance to Help Your Parish: Some people have old in-

surance policies they no longer need. These can be donated to help

grow the parish endowment fund for the future generations of parish-

ioners. If you need assistance about how to make a gift of insurance

please contact Juliet Greco at the Catholic Foundation.

NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY Monday, June 27 National HIV Testing Day was established as an annu-

al observance to promote HIV testing. The theme is

“Take the Test. Take Control.”

Step 1: Know the Facts

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. HIV weakens a person’s

immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection.

No effective cure exists for HIV. Some groups of people in the United States are

more likely to get HIV than others because of many factors including their risk

behaviors and geographic location. Blacks and Latinos continue to be dispropor-

tionately affected. According to Emory University’s Center for AIDS Research

(CFAR), the South is home to 21 of the 25 metropolitan areas with both the

highest number of individuals living with HIV and newly diagnosed with HIV

infection (includes Metro Atlanta and Augusta). CDC data show that the South

lags behind the rest of the U.S. when it comes to HIV-positive people getting

the treatment they need or knowing that they are infected in the first place.

Nearly 1 in 8 people living with HIV are unaware of their status.

soring the build by supporting the financial costs of the build through contribu-

tions and providing volunteers.

IHM PASTORAL COUNCIL THE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL is

the consultative body that advises the pastor

in planning and sustaining the pastoral life of

the parish. The twelve councilors meet six

times a year on Monday evenings with

Monsignor Jowdy. Each summer four new

councilors are selected to serve 3-year terms.

If you may be interested in serving your

parish community in this way, please see the

Pastoral Council materials in the literature

rack in the church narthex or at the parish

office in the Maloney Center.

BLOOD DRIVE The May 11 blood drive was a huge success!

Our goal was 40 units and we received 51.

Many thanks to all who participated in and

helped with this effort.

Please mark your calendars now for our

September 14 blood drive! And please do

remember that if you plan to donate blood on

September 14, the last day to donate prior to

that is July 20.

SVDP HANDYMAN If you need a handyman to help you with vari-

ous small jobs around your house, you could

obtain some help by hiring a Safe Environ-

ment approved volunteer from the St. Vincent

de Paul IHM Conference to help you with

your work.

Simply make a donation to the St. Vincent de

Paul IHM Conference in the amount of $25.00

for every hour the volunteer spends on your

job. This is a win, win, win situation: we help

you, you help the St. Vincent de Paul IHM

Conference, and the St. Vincent de Paul helps

the many people in need. So if you need

some assistance with small jobs around the

house, call 770-986-4996 and ask for Dirk.

SUMMER OFFERTORY IHM wishes you safe travels! Enjoy your trips

and we look forward to seeing you when you

return! If you have not already done so, please

it really helps us keep the lights on and

discussion of the lectionary readings for the following Sunday. The study

meets in the Lower Level at two different times: 9:30 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. There is no registration required and no fee to participate. Feel free to join the group as your schedule permits.

Are you interested in becoming Catholic, or simply learning more about the Catholic faith? We look

forward to meeting you, answering your questions, and helping you

discern God’s call. Please join us for the first of our summer “inquiry” sessions on Wednesday, June 29,

7:00-8:00 p.m., in the lower level of the church. Contact Drew Denton in

the parish office for more information.

In preparation for the 2016-2017 school year, we are also seeking additional catechists for our faith formation programs. If you would like to help others understand and live their faith more fully – whether young children, teenagers, or adults – please let us know! Contact Drew Denton or Alicia Guerrero for more information on how to get involved.

This Wednesday, on the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, we celebrate the greatest missionary the Church has ever known. St. Paul endured floggings, stonings, and shipwrecks in his efforts to spread the good news of Jesus Christ across the Roman Empire. He set the model for all those after him who would strike out for foreign lands, giving up everything for the sake of the gospel. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, soon to be recognized as a saint herself, is probably the best known of the many heroic missionaries of recent years. It is tempting to associate the word missionary with these sorts of faraway adven-tures—and thus to give ourselves a pass from engaging in such unrealistic activi-ties. But the truth is that being a missionary is usually a more prosaic, if no less significant, line of work, one that takes place much closer to home. And it is a line of work to which all of us have been called. As Pope Francis has reminded us, “Anyone who has truly experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love. Every Christian is a missionary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus.” (The Joy of the Gospel, 120). There are countless opportunities to be a real, working missionary in this parish. If you are wondering where to start, please give me a call. Drew Denton Director of Faith Formation

You have done countless things to prepare for your child’s birth. But how can you make sure that you are prepared for your child’s “second birthday” — his or her birth into the Church through the waters of baptism? The next class for parents presenting infants or young children for baptism will be Sunday, July 10, 3:00-4:30 in the lower level of the church. Register online at http://ihmatlanta.org/baptism or contact Yolanda Muñoz in the parish office ([email protected], 404-636-1418).

primer paso crucial.
