The members of the IHM St. Vincent de Paul Society are sponsoring a Clothing Drive this weekend. This is a great time to clean out your closets and donate cloth-ing and shoes that you no longer need to the poor in the community. The SVdP truck will be parked in the upper church parking lot and Vincentians will be at the truck before and after each Mass accepting your donations. These donations are tax deductible. Thank you for your continued generosity to the poor and to the work of the St. Vin-cent de Paul Society IHM Conference.

We will be holding an electronics recycling drive from October 5 through October 12 with eWaste ePlanet. Items can be dropped off on the pallets next to the Historic Church in the upper parking lot. To see a full list of accepted items, please visit http://tiny.cc/ihmewaste. Please Note: There is a federally mandated $10.00 fee for any television screen left for recycling. This fee can be paid at either the school or parish office.

Marty Haugen and Tony Alonso will perform a concert with the IHM Music Ministry on Friday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the church to benefit Living Room. Living Room is an Atlanta-based ministry that transitions people living with HIV/AIDS from shelters and homelessness into permanent housing. Admission: Donations of toiletr ies, towels, household cleaning products or bed linens which will be delivered to Living Room. Free will donations will also be accepted, and given directly to Living Room.

“Our Holy Father has reminded us of the words of Jesus – we are not called to judge our neighbors but to love them. So many people are marginalized by lifestyle, physical ill-ness, mental and emotional difficulties, financial, and other challenges. Jesus embraced and loved all He encountered. We can do no less.” (from The Pastoral Plan for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta, p. 9)

On Sunday, October 18, IHM parish community will participate in the 25th Annual AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run at Piedmont Park. By walking, you will bear witness to the gospel teaching to reach out to the marginalized in need of hope and comfort, you will honor those who have lost their lives to this disease, and you will be able to listen to speakers on the current dismal state of the HIV crisis in Georgia. It is easy to register online at http://www.2015aidswalkatlanta.kintera.org/immaculateheartofmary. Members of the IHM AIDS Ministry will be in the Nar-thex after all weekend Masses beginning on Oct. 3rd until Oct 11th to register walkers and accept donations on behalf of our pastor, Monsignor Al. Please help Monsignor Al and the Team go the extra mile and proclaim that Every Life Deserves Hope!

National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

October 4, 2015

On Tuesday, September 22, Pope Francis

left Cuba to fly to the United States. The

IHM School family gathered on the back

field in a symbolic gesture to welcome

the Pope at the approximate time he

would fly over our area. The children

prayed with Monsignor Jowdy, sang

“Make Me a Channel of Your Peace,” and

waved paper peace doves.

The stage on the back

field was decorated with

signs welcoming the Pope

in the many languages he

speaks. By far the most

impressive gesture of

welcome was the release

of a basket of white

doves. The doves circled

above the field three

times, and then flew off.

It was a beautiful scene

for the students, teachers

and parents.

Sunday, November 15, 2015 from

The Gospel in Stone: A Brief Introduction to Church Architecture What do our buildings say about our beliefs? On October 18 and October 25, Mark Ethun, an architect, historic preservationist, and IHM parishioner, will be leading a two-part series on church architecture. The first part will cover church architecture in general, and the second part will look at IHM specifically. These events will take place in between the morning Masses (10:15-11:15).

Scripture Study: Thursday mornings and evenings Each Thursday, Dr. Louanne Bachner leads an informative and prayerful discussion of the lectionary readings for the following Sunday. These classes meet in the Lower Level at two different times: 9:30 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. There is no registration required and no fees to participate. Feel free to join the group as your schedule per-mits.

Love is our Mission: The Family Fully Alive Coming Soon!

Last weekend thousands of families from around the world gathered with Pope Francis in Philadelphia. What were they talking about? Come find out later this year, when we discuss Love is Our Mission, the short book specifically pre-pared for that historic occasion. Stay tuned for more details.

What is Liturgy of the Word for Children? The Liturgy of the Word for Children offers children, ages 4-7, the opportunity to

hear God’s Word in an accessible and engaging format. They listen to the

scriptures, say the Creed, and offer their prayers in language appropriate to their age

-level. We offer the Children’s Liturgy at 9:00 and 11:30 Mass throughout the

school year. No registration is required; simply send your children forward when

the priest or deacon calls them.

Adults are welcome in the Children’s Liturgy too! If you are interested in helping

with this ministry, please contact Drew Denton ([email protected]).

Are You Called to be a Catechist? We always welcome new catechists to help teach at all age levels. If you would like

to help others understand and live their faith more fully, please consider one of the

following opportunities:

"Rebuild my House"

ACTIVITY FOR TEENS

“Rebuild my house”. This was the message of Christ to Francis as he prayed in the Chapel at San Damiano. This is also the message to each of us as disciples. All of youth can prepare for and reflect on a service involvement by considering the life and message of St. Francis of Assisi. Become familiar with the story of the life of St. Francis of Assisi, go to: http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/Francis/who_was.asp. Then answer the following questions:

How would you describe Francis?

What are some of the characteristics of Francis that we could imitate as disciples?

If Francis came to visit us in our parish, our neighborhood, our community, what would he notice?

What would he challenge us to do?

How do you see St. Francis as a model for yourself in doing service?

How does your involvement in service help you to be a servant of the poor and a steward of creation?

The example of St. Francis shows that humility is an essential part of our preaching the Gospel. Like all witnesses, your sharing should point to Christ and to the many ways we are privileged to continue his work of sharing Good News and of becoming Good News for others.

“All This I Do For the Sake of the Gospel”

We have reached our goal in pledges for the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual

Appeal! But we really should be achieving TWICE our goal each year,

since AAA funds received over and above our goal return to us at IHM

without any Archdiocesan assessment! Our gifts help the charitable

works of the Archdiocese AND they help our parish. If you have not

already made a pledge to the 2015 AAA, please visit

http://appeal.archatl.com to make your pledge today!

Thank you to all who have already pledged! Remember to look for

your monthly pledge reminders, and please do your best to honor your

pledge before the end of the year. If you are having any

por su estilo de vida, enfermedad física, condiciones men-

tales y emocionales, estado financiero y otras dificultades.

Jesús acogió y amó a todos los que encontró. No podemos

hacer menos que eso." (de El Plan Pastoral de la Arquidióce-
