Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated the first Sunday of the Month directly following the 10 am Mass. One baptismal preparation class is required. The preparation class seeks to help parents understand the Rite of Baptism and to prepare and support

Liturgy Corner Compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home with The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) On this Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus proclaims, “This is the time of fulfillment. The king-dom of God is at hand.” That kingdom so long prom-ised by the prophets is unfolding. And what does this mean? How are we to be part of this unfolding? “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Apparently living in the new kingdom requires us to hope and to change the way we live. Are you purposefully grow-ing your knowledge of the Kingdom of God? The First Reading tells a parable about Jonah, who was called to announce a message of repentance to the people of Nineveh in ancient Assyria. When God first called him to go to Nineveh, he ran the other way! And when he finally warned the Ninevities and God forgave them, Jonah became furious because he wanted God to destroy Nineveh, not treat them with compassion and mercy Guess who most need-ed to experience conversion of heart! In contrast to last week’s Gospel, in Mark’s Gospel Jesus takes the initiative in calling his first disciples. Jesus is said to have first called four fishermen—Simon, Andrew, James, and John. Simon and Andrew are brothers. Jesus promises that he will make them “fishers of men.” James and John are also brothers. Mark does not report Jesus' words of invitation to them, but he does report that they left their fishing immediately; their father, Zebedee, was left behind in the boat. Mark’s Gospel is told with a great sense of urgency and immediacy. Jesus is a person of action, and events occur in rapid succession. Time is of the essence; the fishermen immediately put aside their livelihood to become Jesus’ disciples. The Kingdom of God is here and now. The time of fulfillment is at hand. How might our lives be different if we more fully shared this sense of the immediacy of God’s kingdom? Lent is four weeks away. How will you prepare yourself this Lenten season? Formed has a powerful series on the Sacrament of Reconciliation called Forgiven. Forgiven explores the grace and healing offered in Confession and shows how this sacrament of mercy reveals the depth and bounty of God’s love. By looking at God’s revelation of his mercy in Scripture and making a step-by-step examination of the Rite itself, Forgiven communi-cates God’s invitation to each one of us to come ex-perience his indescribable love in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You could invite others over to watch this series and spend time in discussion using the accompanying discussion questions. A wonderful way to deepen your faith journey to Easter. A note of thanks to all the families of St. John the Baptist that pledged their financial support to Mater Dei Radio. We were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response giv-en by the people of your parish. During the weekend presentations, 205 families filled out pledge cards totaling $23,570. When you add the $10,000 matching gift, the total support from your parish family comes to a very gen-erous $33,570. This goes a long way in helping us to achieve our goal of $1.4-million to cover the costs asso-ciated with building our media center, which will bring more souls closer to Christ.
