PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEThis is my final message to the membership (I hope!), as my current board term expires on September 30th. I have thoroughly enjoyed my nine years of service as a HCC board member. Mike Roper, who will have served eight and one-half years on the board by the end of the month, will be stepping down as well. We are happy to welcome new board members, Will Buie (WGLA Engineering) and Ken Adams (Edward Jones, Laurel Park). Will and Ken have been active club members and strong supporters for a number of years. Also, Dr. Keith Maxwell and Ken Crook agreed to serve a second three-year term on our board. Thank you all, and especially to Mike for his faithful service!

When we entered the 2019-2020 board-year last October, none of us anticipated the topsy-turvy impact that the Covid-19 Pandemic would wreak on us. We had just come off a great membership drive (thank you, Sarah, and all the sponsors!) and were enjoying the recently renovated Grill. In our sixth month (March), it all seemingly fell apart, but:

- No dining-in during Phase 1; but to-go dining saved the day—we averaged 800 takeout meals per week.- Golf met governor’s “essential exercise activity” criteria and has enjoyed record numbers of rounds played and been a revenue anchor for the club.- Tennis courts initially closed but then reopened—racquet sports going strong since.- State-imposed Emergency Maximum Occupancy capacities on dining-in venues and swimming pools in Phase 2 led to serving fewer members at a time, but reservation policies and great cooperation by our members smoothed things out.- An Annual Meeting of Equity Members that was conducted via a video presentation and email message came off fine. We had a robust response of ballots (over twice the number of 80 ballots required for a quorum) which affirmed the board nominations of Keith, Will and the two Kens. Next year’s nominating committee was presented including myself (Chair), Gil Rainey, Mike Roper, Sandy Sessoms, and Jim Wiley. Anthony and I were at the clubhouse on August 10 to field any member questions in-person. Please remember that Anthony, the department heads, and board members are always available for member input, whether complaints or compliments.

In short, we have experienced stable and growing membership, a very sound financial position, and great cooperation and thank-you’s from our membership in trying times. We would not be in this position without the outstanding leadership of Anthony, his department heads, and our wonderful employees—they demonstrated amazing creativity and flexibility in keeping member services going strong despite all the externally-imposed restrictions. I also thank our board of directors who lent great support and input to Anthony and his team. Finally, our wonderful club would not be what it is without the participation, involvement, and support of all our members. To all of you—the management team, employees, and members, I say THANK YOU!

MANAGER’S MESSAGEI write this message today on a beautiful Monday afternoon. The golf course has been busy all day. Golf Maintenance is laying sod on #8 and mowing, mowing, mowing. I just returned from the tennis courts which were packed with juniors. The pool is quiet right now after a solid morning of aerobics and lap swimmers. The Main Clubhouse had a busy restaurant weekend. And outside my office door I can hear Membership Director Sarah Cioffi talking with someone interested in joining our Club. It is fantastic!

What changes are ahead of us in the next few months? I keep up with the North Carolina Covid Dashboard website to try and guess what Governor Cooper might do. There’s no doubt the numbers are improving. Everything points toward some loosening of the rules soon, doesn’t it?

Today, my plan is to reopen the Grill this fall- with whatever the Governor’s restrictions are at that time. The tent behind the clubhouse has been a wonderful option for us to enjoy eating outdoors, but cold weather will come sooner or later and we need to move back toward normal.

When banquets are permitted again, we’ve got to put our ballroom back together and get the banquet money machine back to work. We just lose too much money without banquets.

The pool season is winding to a close but we are extending it as long as possible. We know we’ll operate the current schedule until September 13, and we are looking at extending a week of Monday-Wednesday-Friday mornings to September 18. Thank you to the guards for sticking with us longer than they expected.

As a business, the Club has survived the last few months pretty well. Membership activity has been fantastic. Golf revenue has been the best since the Arnold Palmer days. But restaurant operations have been very costly. We look forward to getting back to normal operations. Overall, we are a still a very sound business. But we really aren’t a business, we are a Club that exists to serve our Members. And we think about that most of all.

MEMBERSHIPWhat a whirlwind this year has been already. I had hesitancies about what growth would look like this year following last years outstanding 100+ Memberships sold. Projections were set in February and soon after COVID-19 hit, severely weakening our hope for growth.

Despite all our fears, we’ve had an outstanding year for growth. Since March, we have gained 34 new Members with 22 of those having A memberships, 2-B memberships and 10-C memberships.

This influx of Members has been felt by all areas of the Club and is extremely evident through the 30+ person Water Aerobics Classes, bustling Golf Course, filled Tennis and Pickle Ball Courts and booked-up Dining spaces.

As we all know, Hendersonville is growing. People are moving here from all over; New York, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida etc. Many of these newcomers have contributed to your Club’s growth, however it is by the recommendation, invitation, inclusion and kindness of

our Members, that have truly contributed to a growing and thriving Club, and for that I thank you.

Here at HCC there is a Membership category for everyone’s interest and huge discounts on initiation offered to those who pay half of the discounted amount within their first 60 days as members. Even if someone isn’t sure if HCC is right for them, they can preview the club for 12 months and only pay dues and charges during that first year. After that, they can leave the Club if HCC isn’t for them, or they can continue their membership and pay a higher rate of initiation with payments spaced out over 3 annual payments or 60 monthly payments.

GOLF2020 MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPOur Men’s Club Championship had the most participants in over 12 years. We were very fortunate to complete the two days as the radar did not look like we would be able to play Saturdays round. After a few showers, we were able to complete day one prior to the lighting strikes in the afternoon. Our Senior Championship was played for the

first time from the green tees and we had 16 compete for the title. Larry Appleby shot his age (69), during the first round to take the lead over John Kelly (70). In the end Gary Golbesky’s steady play (71-72-143) in the wet conditions allowed him to win his 4th Senior Championship. In our Club Championship, Derek Schroer shot even par (70-70-140) to become our 2020 Club Champion. Derek was paired both rounds with our 2018 Club Champion AJ Shaffer (72-73-145) and it was exciting to watch these two use their length to take on the wet conditions. Each of these talented young men competed when they were younger in our Junior Club Championships and it was exciting to watch them play for Hendersonville’s biggest prize. Don Gregory won the Overall Net with scores (69-68-137). Congratulations to everyone who won and we appreciate the support of everyone playing in this event!

DRIVING RANGE As our club was built in 1933, it is a challenge with our driving range located directly between two golf holes (#9, #16). Please be very careful when practicing, as many shots from the range have entered into the golf holes while golfers are playing. Remember to yell (FORE!) on any errant shot, on the course and on the driving range. If you have a tendency of being arrant with your drives, you may feel more comfortable having your driving range practice sessions earlier or later in the day when there are not as many golfers on the course. Safety is always a priority.

We have noticed range bags in members’ cars when dropping off their golf clubs. Please remember that the driving range bags are to stay at the club. Please return all driving range bags back to the golf shop. When you empty the range balls out on the range please hang the empty range bag on the club holders behind the hitting stations.

SHORT GAME CHIPPING GREENOur short game practice green is perfect for practicing shots from around the green. When you are done practicing at this area please remember to collect all golf balls hit with the collection tubes and repair any golf ball marks to the green. We have a repair tool, that will prevent you from having to bend over, located with the golf balls and collection tubes to the right of the green.

PRO SHOP MERCHANDISEWe have some beautiful summer Footjoy apparel still available for men and women in the golf shop. As much as I do not want cooler weather to come, our fall apparel will start deliveries in mid September. AM&E headcovers have been flying off the shelves and if you are in need of replacements for your worn golf club headcovers, I would encourage you to come check out some of these new arrivals. MAIN CLUBHOUSEIt was a Saturday in late February and I decided to take a walk down to the Grille and see what all of the fuss was about. The lights and sounds of a dueling piano show could be seen and heard from the street. Once I walked in, I saw 70 plus members singing along with big smiles on their faces. It seemed we had struck gold in terms of member enjoyment. Everyone had the same question. When are we

going to do this again? Obviously things have changed a bit since then but, I think it is time for us to have a dinner and a show and see if we can strike gold again.

On Saturday, September 26th the Main Clubhouse will be hosting an outdoor concert featuring Crocodile Smile. This is a fun band that will have everyone singing along as their stage lights up the night sky. We will be serving a three course dinner upstairs and downstairs with an emphasis on outdoor seating. Those not wanting dinner can feel free to bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show. I cannot think of a better way to kick off fall and enjoy our beautiful grounds. We hope to see you there!

CHEF’S CORNERFRIDAY NIGHT FRESH DAY BOAT CATCH HCC will feature a different catch every Friday night at the Clubhouse for the month of September. Towards the end of September our Sous Chef, Daniel McIntyre, Clubhouse manager Patrick Necessary, (If his wife will let him go), and myself are planning a quick 2-day fishing trip with the Club’s fish provider, Frank of Simply Caught Seafood, so he can show us the ropes and we can see the operation first-hand.

Jeff and Frank started Simply Caught Seafood LLC. in 2016 with the goal to provide local, sustainably-caught seafood, strait to the residents of western North Carolina. Growing up on the Outer Banks and moving to Asheville and Greensboro NC, they soon realized that there was something missing; Great, fresh seafood!

“Knowing who caught, transported, filleted, and delivered the seafood is our biggest asset” - Captain FrankJeff and Frank run a 30-foot commercial fishing vessel out of the Beaufort and Oregon Inlets. A typical trip is 1 day offshore then strait to their own FDA approved HACCP facility where they weigh and report their catch then fillet a small amount for custom orders. Jeff and Frank take great pride in the quality of their fish and really try to keep the handling of the seafood to a minimum. “Its always better to deliver the catch head on and gutted with the fish on ice to be handled as little as possible,” says Jeff. Once weighed they deliver strait to restaurants and the public via farmers markets and their custom email list.

While they catch most of their seafood, they also have relationships with a few down east shrimpers, crabbers, oyster men, and other bottom fishermen. These relationships help to offer the seafood that’s in season!

ON THE GREENThe Romans believed that the month of September was looked after by the god, Vulcan. As the god of fire and forge, they expected September to be associated with fires, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. We have fires burning in the West, and we’re in the middle of a global pandemic. I think we can do without volcanos and earthquakes.

Fortunately, the golf course condition has been fantastic; we’re having one of our best years. As the pandemic and golf season started to ramp up, we clearly understood the role that we’d play in assisting the Club during this period. I am proud to say that we delivered. Essential applications of fertilizer and herbicides were timed perfectly, our turf transitioned smoothly from winter dormancy, and we have an unbelievably strong staff. Along with our department, I feel all departments and employees have contributed to ensuring a great Member experience during these uncertain times.

Tuesday and Wednesday, September 4 and 5, the course will be closed for aerification of the greens. There are numerous methods for greens cultivation, and during the season, we monitor the greens to decide which cultivation method we’ll perform. This fall, we’ll be focusing on the thatch layer and using a dethatching machine call a Graden. Thatch is defined as a layer of dead and living stems, leaves, and roots that accumulate between the green and soil surface, and is caused when the grass is growing and being cut faster than it can be naturally decomposed. Excessive thatch accumulation can severely impede the playability and long term health of golf course greens. Our greens do not have excessive thatch, and we intend to keep it that way. In addition to the Graden’s blades removing thatch, it simultaneously fills the remaining grooves to the top with sand resulting in smooth firm greens.

Our staff will continue staying busy this month, prepping the bermudagrass playing surfaces for winter, applying pre-emergence herbicides, sodding and seeding a few areas with bluegrass, and catching up on projects.

WGAWell, we are off to a roaring start this Month. So many special activities planned. MEMBER-GUESTOur first huge event this month was the Member Guest Tournament with a “Golfing Safari” theme. Our ladies (and even our Gents-Jay and Seth) were dressed in animal print designs to support our vision.

Fifty-Six ladies participated, many traveling from nearby clubs, to join their friends on this adventure.

Planning for this event is challenging in the best of times. However, the combination of COVID-19 and thunderstorms really tested our resiliency! Many thanks to the great committee (Sue Robbins, Deneen Porter, Laura Arch, Sharon Goell and myself) for taking this burden and making it one of our best. Special thanks to Chef Steve and Patrick for creating and delivering the awesome food and beverages we enjoyed!

Deneen Porter parred hole #1 on July 24th which for many is like getting a birdie. So many of us struggle with this hole and consider even a 5 a victory. Congrats!

I heard that Linda Cox has been driving the ball over 200 yards with her new driver! WOW!

RESULTSOur first August tournament was one of my favorites. 4 CLUBS AND A PUTTER. Everyone made their own choices for this event. Some used their drivers, others chose their 3 woods. Some forgot to take a sand wedge.

Lavinia chose not to use her driver. Instead she chose her 3 wood, 8 iron, 6 hybrid and pitching wedge. Megan used her driver, 5 hybrid, 33 degree hybrid, and a 9 iron. Good thing you stayed away from the sand!

18-hole Step-Aside Scramble was held on August 11th. Elaine Harris was the Chairperson for this event with Kiki Matthews and Margaret Arnold. More than $4400 was collected from the WGA, Tennis and individual members of our Club.

Everyone who participated received a pink mask. Prizes were pink golf balls, towels, socks and visors.

Twenty-Eight WGA ladies participated in this great event and wore pink to honor this cause.

Deborah Altman won closest to the pin on #13. She won a free round of golf and cart fee for a guest.

Many new formats of play are being introduced to provide for more variety. Also, we are attempting to re-connect with our fellow clubs to promote our inter-club play, the first of which was at Cummings Cove.
