IGCSE Gr.9 Art Unit-2: Graphic design/Project-5: Food packaging Bobby Yoshinami-Hitachi Design Brief: Design a gum package for the “Lotte” snack company. The gum package that you will be designing will be much like the other gums sold by this company such as “Stride” and “Fits”, however under the name “Pika”. Pika (ピカ) is a Japanese onomatopoeia, which describes a shiny or clean state of something. The reason to why we named this gum “Pika” is because this gum is a mouth refreshing, sugar-free gum meant for keeping the mouth clean. The package design must reflect back to the topic of a clean mouth and this must be noticeable by the target customers. This product has no solid target customers since gums are chewed by people of all different ages, however we are mainly aiming for an age group between 13~20. This is because people in their adolescent tend to start paying more attention to their looks, smells, appearance and many more. Since our main target customer is aimed for middle school, high school and college students be carful of your color chooses, fonts, layouts and many more. This is because they may not reflect the image suitable for the target. For example if too many bright colors are used they may look as if they are meant for little children. Also make sure that the design is address for all gender.

Process: Before I started my design I first did some research so I could actually choice what kind of gum my product was going to be. I first went to a normal convenient store and bought my self three different gums. I also searched on the Internet for various types of gum and I decided to make a breath gum, like “Fits” and not a bubble gum. By doing this I was able to create the basic idea of my design. This process also helped me in the making my fonts and slogans (subtitles).

1. I started of my design by sketching my ideas and then I developed the design from there.

2. Then using the gum package that I scanned it to make it to make a net. I used the pen tool in illustrator to trace the picture and create a net.

3. Then changed the opacity of the net so I could trace my hand drawn version of the design. I turned on the smart guide and the grid by going to view on the menu bar. I used the pen tool and traced the lips. I fill this shape with a red color.

4. Because I was trying to achieve a Roy Lichtenstein pop art look by making a dotted pattern however this did not turn out well since I did not know how to use illustrator. (Rejected idea)

5. Then again using the pen tool I created the tongue and teeth. In the rough copy I had each teeth visible however to simplify my design I just filled it white. My color choices were taken from observing pop art artist such as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

5. Then I need to make a logo, so I created my own font. First I drew all my ideas on one separate paper. (See paper) These fonts had to reflect and meet my brief so some of the fonts I had to reject. (See paper to view reflected font.)

6. Then I used the scanner so I could trace the font on illustrator. I choose this font because the extended parts reflect on the long lasting taste of the gum. I used stars for the dots on “i” and “a”, which reflect the shininess that the gum gives you to your mouth. The color blue was chosen because it reflects on the taste of the gum.

7. I used the text tool to create my subtitles and company logo.

8. I used the ellipse tool to make the sunrays. Once making the ellipse I filled it with a yellow color. I changed the weight of the stroke and added dashed lines so the stroke became like sunrays. I also changed the opacity so that it does not distract with the mouth too much.

9. I got my nutrient and recycle signs from the Internet. I had to make sure that they included ingredients that were healthy for the mouth so that it met the brief.
