CCSPCA EVENTS A-10 The News, Monday, March 7, 2011 If you like compact active dogs, consider a beagle By Maria DeFillipo Cumberland County SPCA Follow your heart (or your nose!) to the CCSPCA. In the past few months, it’s been raining beagles and hounds! Josie arrived during the “puppy frenzy” of the holiday. She has a tiny stature and sweet face, and five little puppies she is mothering! In a few weeks, Josie and the puppy dogs will be avail- able for adoption. Our recent beagle arrivals include Trucker, a unique looking beagle with orange markings and gorgeous blue eyes. Poor Trucker had been hit by a car and was suffering from an injured leg and several large open wounds. Because our foster homes are overwhelmed with many families fostering litters of puppies or multiple adult dogs, it took us a while to find a foster home for Trucker. Happily, Trucker just walked out the door to his new foster home. It looks like he’s feeling better already — he has a new pep in his step! Hailey appears to be a beagle/basset hound mix, as she’s a bit larger than your typical beagle. She was found lost and alone in the middle of the night on the side of the road. She is now receiving medical treatment and is sched- uled to be spayed. She has deep, soulful eyes and a loving and calm temperament. She gets along great with other dogs and kids — a wonderful dog waiting for a wonderful home. Jangles and Elmer are just waiting for you to come visit them at the CCSPCA. Jangles is hanging his hound dog ears because he has been waiting for a home since early January. He’s a staff and volunteer favorite, described as a gentle giant. Please give him a chance out of his kennel, where he settles quickly and shows off what an awesome boy he is. You also don’t want to miss out on our Elmer! Elmer was found wandering in (you guessed it) Elmer Borough. His face is all white, but he’s a happy, old man who has lots of life and love left in him. He’s very affectionate and really easygoing with other pets. A beagle may be right for your family if you like a dog who is generally good- natured, friendly, compact and active. Beagles are prone to obesity and bore- dom if they don’t have enough exercise — they love the great outdoors! If left out alone, they will follow their nose wherever it takes them! Some beagles also have an ear-splitting bay or are prone to barking. Beagles can also be stubborn, so make sure you are committed to a housebreaking and training routine. There is just something special about a beagle, though. Take Emma, a 14-year-old beagle who arrived at the shelter in the fall. Because of a massive tumor and serious depression, she was placed in hospice foster care where we were pre- pared to let her spend her final weeks. Wrong! Emma proved to be full of life and loving personality. She was spayed and had her tumor removed and was finally adopted last month, to a new family who adores her! Your best bet is to visit us and meet our amazing hounds and beagles — you may just fall in love with! Pets of the Week Cats GEORGE is an attention seeking Persian looking for a new home. He is loving and sweet. PICKLES is an 8-year-old male cat. He has beautiful beige long hair. OSCAR is an orange and white tabby. He is about 6 years old. He is neutered and declawed. STAR is a calico. She is about 2 years old. She loves attention and people. This girl we call MOMMA CAT is full of fun and antics. She is about 1 year old. CC is about 2 years old. We think she may have some Manx in her. She would do well in a home without dogs. Dogs TRUCKER is a striking blue-eyed beagle mix. He was hit by a car and found himself at the CCSPCA in need of some TLC. He has some wounds and injuries, but our veterinarian is confident that he will make a full recovery. Despite significant pain, he has proven to be a trooper and always has a kiss and tail wag ready for his caregivers. He is recuperating in foster care, and will soon be ready for adoption. HAILEY is a sweet, older beagle/basset hound mix. She was found wandering on the road, and was picked up by a citizen who brought her to the SPCA for care. She was never spayed during her younger years, and was suffering from a serious infection. Hailey is also enjoy- ing her recovery in a foster home, where she is spending lots of time with other dogs and kids of all ages. Hailey is beautiful and good natured and will make a wonderful companion. ELMER is a 12-year-old beagle. Don’t let his age fool you, this cutey is fun loving and active and loves atten- tion. He gets along well with other dogs and is a real “people lover.” If you would like to rescue an older dog with lots of love to give, please consider our boy Elmer. JANGLES is a very nice, 2-year-old, large hound mix. He is a sweet, good natured guy that likes people and loves attention. He is a big boy with a big heart and a lifetime of love to give! JENKINS is a nice, 2-year-old purebred pointer. This good looking guy is friendly and easygoing. He has an athletic build and would love a home with a fenced yard where he could get lots of exercise. Jenkins is currently staying in one of our foster homes, so if you are inter- ested in him please submit an online application. BINGO GIRL is a sweet, quiet 1-year-old lab mix. Bingo is a little shy with new people but warms right up once she gets comfortable. She is really a darling dog, that is affectionate and low key. She is part ;lab but is mixed with a smaller breed, which makes her a nice, medium size. This sweetheart deserves a happy end- ing, please consider giving her the forever home of her dreams.
