Weekend Warrior SyndromeBy: Dr. Lea Early-Thompson, DVM, Director of Veterinary Services
The weather will be getting warmer, which means more outdoor time for everyone — including our four-legged friends. Just like us, pets have been spending some extra time on the couch during the colder months and putting on a few extra pounds. As we all get back into the outdoor fun that both people and pups enjoy, let’s remember that dogs can overdo it with activities just like their owners.
Weekend Warrior Syndrome is a term used for people who are sedentary most of the week and then participate in a large number of physical activities on the weekends. Common complaints include pain and discomfort in muscles and joints. The same is true for our furry friends.
When dogs are in pain, they give us clues and signs in different ways: limping, lack of energy, hiding, not eating, whining, shaking, reluctance to go upstairs or jump onto or off of furniture, etc. The concern for serious injury and need for medical intervention rises as the length of time increases with these signs. If your four-legged sidekick is showing one or more of these signs for 48 hours, a trip to their favorite veterinarian is recommended.
Based on the physical exam provided, your veterinarian will make recommendations for both diagnostics and treatments. During the time leading up to the appointment, remember — do not give your pet any over-the-counter medication! There are a lot of medications that we take when in pain that are toxic to dogs (Ibuprofen, Tylenol, etc.).
Enjoy the warmer months and stay active, but remember to take care of yourself and your canines. Re-introduce activity slowly and take a break when it seems to be too much for you or them. We want everyone to have a safe, pain-free Spring.
