Demountable Bushings

Danly Demountable Bushings are manufactured ofhardened steel and prefitted to precision guideposts. Prefitting is consistently accurate so thatbushings and guide posts of the same diameter areinterchangeable.

Danly Demountable Bushings seat flush with theground face of the punch holder with a tap fit. Theyare assembled in the punch holder with easilymounted clamps that serve to maintain perfectalignment of the bushings, with the boreperpendicular to the ground surface of the punchholder. The use of clamps and screws gives DanlyDemountable Bushings four times the holding powerof pressed-in bushings. Yet, they are easily removed

for die work or repair.Danly Bronze-Plated Demountable Bushings offer

superior resistance to seizure, the major cause ofbushing wear. They are recommended for use onapplications with high surface speed operations andwhere there are unusual side thrust loads.

All Danly Bushings are equipped with Figure 8 oilgrooves and lubrication fittings. Each is inspected bythe most modern methods to assure uniformhardness, quality and accuracy to dimension. Thesize range in diameter and length of DanlyDemountable Bushings is complete for allrecommended use. Other diameters and lengths, orother types, can be furnished on special order.

Low Profile Demountable Bushings

Bronze PlatedLow profile bushings are designed to offer ease ofdie grinding by minimizing the need for removingbushings. Since the main body of the bushing iswithin the punch holder, only a minimum of thebushing projects below the punch holder into the diearea. It thus provides ample clearance for diegrinding and is well suited for presses with automatictransfer devices requiring a minimum of bushing

projection. The low profile bushings are available with two

different clamps. Bushings with an inside diameter ofless than 11⁄2" have the standard clamp with screwhead projecting below the clamp (Clamp No. 6-95-1).Bushings with inside diameter of 11⁄2" and larger havetoe clamps which incorporate the head of the screwwithin the body of the clamp (Clamp No. 6-98-1).

Self-Lubricating Bushings

13

Self-lubrication is the strategic placement of graphiteplugs into either bronze or steel wear surfaces. In theplug, a lubrication oil is impregnated into the graphiteat high pressure where it is stored until required forthe sliding surface. When heat for friction, approx. 80-90 degrees F, develops in the sliding action to thetool, the oil is drawn from the graphite plug permittinglubrication to the surface. A dark smear pattern iscreated on the wear surface as the oil and graphiteare imbedded into the bronze or steel grain. Thisprovides the lubrication necessary for the continuousperformance of the tool.

Self-lubricating bushings are manufactured of castaluminum bronze material and prefitted to guideposts so that bushings and guide posts of the samediameter are interchangeable.

Self-lubricating bushings seat flush with the groundface of the punch holder with a tap fit. They areassembled in the punch holder with easy mountedclamps that serve to maintain perfect alignment ofthe bushings, with the bore perpendicular to theground surface of the punch holder. The use ofclamps and screws gives our self-lubricatingbushings four times the holding power of pressed-inbushings, yet they are easily removed for die work orrepair.

NOTE: Until the lubrication process begins, we recommenda light, 20 wt. oil be applied as a pre-lube to the surface ofthe bushing.

Oversize Shoulder Guide Posts

Danly Shoulder Guide Posts are used with ShoulderGuide Post Bushings for special die sets. The pressfit diameters of the guide posts are the same as thepress fit of the outside diameters of demountablebushings shown on the next page. Thus, the samediameter hole may be bored through the punch anddie holder.

Danly Shoulder Guide Posts are made fromcarefully selected steel which is hardened and

ground to listed diameters. Press fit diameters of theguide posts and the outside diameter of the guidepost bushings are .0075" oversize to allow grindingstock to fit the bored hole.

All Shoulder Guide Posts are inspected by themost modern methods to assure uniform hardness, quality, and accuracy to dimension.

Other diameter and lengths or other types of guideposts will be furnished on special order.

I.D. TOLERANCES FORPREFITTED SHOULDERGUIDE POSTDEMOUNTABLEBUSHINGS

Danly Shoulder Guide Post Bushings used withShoulder Guide Posts simplify construction ofspecial die sets. Inside diameters are finished to theprefitted tolerances shown in the table below. Thepress fit diameter of the bushings and the press fitdiameter of the guide post are plus .0075" for fitting.

Danly Steel or Bronze Shoulder Guide PostBushings may be ground for a tap fit for use as ademountable type bushing. If specifically ordered foruse in this manner, clamps and screws will befurnished, no charge. They may also be ground for apress fit and used without clamps as a press fit typebushing.

Danly bronze plated shoulder guide post bushingsare for use as demountable bushings only. Thesebushings should not be honed. If more clearance isdesired, this can be accomplished by grinding theworking diameter of the shoulder guide post.

See page 14 of this section for data on clampassembly and general descriptive information for theBushings shown on this page.

The Danly Roller Stock Guide and Guide Railprovide accurate guiding of strip and coil stock. TheRoller Stock Guide is designed primarily for use ondies but can be used in any operation where strip orcoil stock should be held against a Guide Rail orrolls.

The cost of a Danly Roller Stock Guide or GuideRail is far less than the value of the shop timerequired to construct a tailor-made guide and rail.

The Roller Stock Guide’s two hardened steel rollershold the stock firmly against the Guide Rail withoutrestricting lateral movement. Spring pressure on therollers can be easily adjusted to meet varying needs. Each Roller Stock Guide is furnished with a light, orheavy-duty spring for optional use.

The Guide and Rail are easily attached. The Guidecan be mounted in two ways: (1) Mounted to theunderside of the stock platform by means of afurnished bracket. (2) Mounted directly on the die setshoe by means of the cap screw which extendsthrough the Guide collar. The Guide Rail is attachedto the stock platform with two button head screwsand two dowel pins.

The Danly Roller Stock Guide is designed towithstand hard wear and vibration. All Parts are ofsteel, and the rollers, arms, collar, and bracket arehardened. The unit is offered in two sizes-one for usewith smaller dies, the other for use with larger dies. The Guide Rail is available in four sizes toaccommodate stock up to .125" thick. All necessarymounting screws are included, along with completesetting-up instructions.

Danly Roller Stock Guide—arms areextended as when rollers arecontacting stock to give a betteroverall view.

Danly Guide Rail provides a“channel” for stock in roll orstrip form.

Screws, dowels and mounting instructions are included in package with each Danly Stock Pusher.*Shortest wedge length is assembled into unit; other wedges are included in package.

Stock Pushers

Keeps stock aligned against die gageHolds securely, right at point of impactEasily mounts in die set, adjusts to correctpressureTwo sizes, varying wedge lengths assure exact fit

Now the costly, troublesome problem of shifting stockand the consequent excessive rejects, wasted stock, downtime and damaged dies is eliminated in asimple, positive, low-cost way by the Danly StockPusher.

Its ease of application, choice of sizes and wedgelengths plus simple mounting and adjustment, endthe need for costly, custom-built pushers.

The Danly Stock Pusher mounts on front, rear orsides of die set to best suit die and feed. Wedge unitof assembly mounts to punch holder, roller unit to dieholder. Mounting instructions are provided to assurecorrect placement.

In operation, the wedge unit engages the roller unitas the die closes. This moves the roller unit armagainst the stripper slide which, in turn, pushes stockagainst the die gage. Stock is held securely alignedagainst the die gage at the movement of the impactand at the point of impact.

The stock pusher allows the operator completefreedom of blank movement when die is open. Allparts receive and supply motion in the properdirection. The stripper slide is not subject to abending or shearing action since there is no slidingfriction from the wedge.

Adjustment of pressure is easily made by simplyturning nuts to adjust spring tension or by replacingspring with a Danly die spring of desired pressure. Byadjusting spring load, pressure to suit weight of stockis easily achieved.

Both sizes of Danly Stock Pushers are suppliedwith three different length wedges, allowing thediemaker to select the one best suited to theparticular shut height.

Socket Head Cap Screws

Socket Head Cap Screws are made of alloy steelwith a controlled fillet under the head and continuousgrain flow for strength. Strength is further developedby heat treatment. The result is a finished productwith close tolerances and fully formed threads for theUnified Class 3A fit.

Knurled heads provide positive finger gripping andspeed up assembly. The accurate hex socketprovides positive, non-slip internal wrenching.

O — THREAD LENGTHSThe length of the screw thread is measured from theextreme point to the last usable thread and shall beas follows:

UNRC Thread length equals 2 diameters plus 1/2"(where this length of thread would be greater than 1/2the screw length).

Thread length equals 1/2 length (where this lengthof thread would be greater than 2 diameters plus 1/2")

UNRF Thread length equals 11/2 diameters plus 1/2"(where this length of thread would be greater than 3/8the screw length).

Thread length equals 3/8 length (where this lengthof thread would be greater than 11/2 diameter plus1/2").

Screws too short to allow application of theseformulas are threaded as close to the head aspracticable.

Socket Head Stripper Bolts

Socket Head Stripper Bolts (Shoulder Screws) aremanufactured to extremely close limits for theaccuracy required in tool and die work.

They are made of alloy steel with controlled filletand continuous grain flow for strength. This highstrength is further developed by carefully controlledheat treatment. The result is a finished product withclose tolerances and fully formed threads for theUnified Class 3A fit.

The knurled head makes for sure finger grip for fastassembly. The accurate hex socket provides forpositive, nonslip internal wrenching.

In addition, shoulders are held to fine tolerances forclose fit in drilled holes. The threads and head areconcentric with the body for uniformly accurateassembly. Threads are finished close to theshoulders for maximum holding power.

Ball cages are made of a heat treated aluminumalloy with tough, wear-resistant qualities. They aremanufactured to rigid quality control standards toassure a smooth, burr-free finish that reduces frictionand the possibility of scoring.

Ball bearings are vacuum degassed quality, fatigueresistant steel and are thoroughly inspected forroundness, smooth finish and dimensional tolerance.

Ball cages are mounted to drilled and tapped guideposts by a special washer assembly which permitscage to rotate freely around guide post, when notunder pre-load.

Ball bearings are arranged in a spiral pattern in thecage to minimize tracking or grooving and assureuniform wear. Each ball is retained by spinning formaximum security.

Type I Selection Data

Instructions For Using Chart On Page 41 ☞Selection of a Type I Ball Bearing Bushing Assembly is based on therequired stroke and the guide post diameter. With these two factorsestablished, refer to the Selection Chart:

1. Under the heading Stroke “S’’, find the column for the desired stroke.

2. Move down this column to colored square on horizontal line oppositerequired Post diameter.

3. For required bushing length, move to left from colored square onhorizontal line to Bushing Length column. (See “Caution’’ Note at bottomof page.)

4. Select cage length from Ball Cage column. Select length shownwithin colored area matching the colored square in which stroke andbushing length selections intersect. Increased life is provided whenlongest cage length is selected, shut height permitting.

*Note: If die grind is not required, stroke may be increased by the amountof die grind allowance shown in “X’’ column. If die grind is greater than theamount shown, stroke will shorten by the additional amount added.

Note: If calculated guide post length is not listed:

1. Select next longer length and cut off to required length,

(Caution: Demountable Guide Post may not be cut off; choose nextshorter length. )

2. Or, select shorter length and recess post in punch holder to obtaincorrect L dimension.

Press fit length should be equal to or greater than the diameter of theguide post, if possible.

Note: On Type I Assemblies, a die set designed for a particular strokemay be used in any press of lesser stroke, but never in any press wherethe stroke is greater than originally chosen.

Caution: Be sure bushing does not strike punch holder at minimum shutheight. If this condition exists, use shorter bushing and correspondingball cage.

TYPE OF BUSHING

TYPE OFGUIDE POST

To select a Type II or Type III Ball Bearing Bushing Assembly:1. Determine the desired stroke,

2. Determine the required guide post diameter,

3. Determine the desired operating condition, or the extent to which the cage leaves the bushing,

4. Last, determine whether a Demountable or Straight Sleeve Bushing is preferred.

Once these four factors: (1) stroke, (2) guide post diameter,(3) operating condition and (4) type of bushing, are established, refer to the Selection Chart.

First find the column headed by the desired stroke (S).Moving down this column, opposite the required guide postdiameter, find the color square in the desired operating condition
