IDC MEDIA STUDIES COURSE OUTLINE 2013-14
SO WHAT IS IDC?
• Interdisciplinary studies combine traditional subject disciplines to investigate specific areas of knowledge or society, and in our case the focus is MEDIA
MEDIA’s Interdisciplinary implications:

• Evaluate effects, look at and critique media from a stylistic perspective
• Investigate societal impacts and consequences of media in our society
For Example:
• Gender Portrayal in Advertising
• Social Media
• Film as a Reflection of Social Norms and Values
the Units • Unit 1: The Media Landscape you live in
and its effect in our daily lives
Unit 2: Media Shaping the Message
• How does media shape messages, thougths and values? Examination of theory and practice
Unit 3: Media and Citizenship
• This unit will investigate how media inform and some of the biases inherent in different coverages. Journalism, Photography and photo essays will be important in this unit.
Unit 4: Audience Profiling
• How are audiences sought, targeted and reached? An analysis of tv, music and video games.
Unit 5: Film• We will study the history of film, important
aspects of making films and important directors and their contributions to the art of cinema.
Evaluation:
• 30% of the Course is the Culminating Activity
• 70% is Course Work from Sept. to May.
