Spurring economic growth together

To our investors and partners

Thank you for your support of the Ionia County Economic Alliance (ICEA). Your endorsement of the work we do has made our success possible over the last few years. Your commitment to the ICEA demonstrates your active support for our mission in spurring job growth and investment in Ionia County. I want to particularly thank the Board of Directors for their engagement and leadership in helping us get to this point today.

We continue to market the business assets of Ionia County throughout the county and state as well as nationally and internationally through our partnership with The Right Place, Inc. This has led to the ICEA actively engaging several national business attraction and expansion projects.

ICEA has also put a greater emphasis on providing support and services to local companies. We ensure that business leaders in Ionia County are aware of and have access to all the resources they need to be successful. From financing and workforce development, to manufacturing and innovation training, ICEA surrounds the company with resources to help them grow.

In the months ahead, we will continue to partner with our educational, workforce, business development, and municipal partners and with our peers to provide the tools, resources and investment to spur continued economic growth and opportunity in Ionia County.

We thank you again for your continued support and eagerly look forward to Ionia County’s continued economic growth.

Sincerely,

Chris ThelenArea Manager, Consumers Energy 2013 ICEA Board Chair

2015 Success Stories

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch(50 new jobs, $43 million investment)

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch plans to significantly expand its organic and cage-free production facilities to meet increased market demand, by adding new egg-laying and pullet growing capacity.

Working in partnership with the Ionia County Economic Alliance (ICEA), The Right Place, and The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Herbruck’s announced plans for a new expansion in Ionia County. The local expansion is expected to create 50 new jobs and $43 million in capital investment by the company.

This latest expansion builds on a previous announcement in 2014 when Herbruck’s released plans for a $33 million expansion, including the investment of $1.5 million in a new, public main sewer line tied directly to the Lakewood system. The company’s expansion of this sewer line, funded by Herbrucks, will be available to any company along the line. Upon completion the new sewer line will be donated to the community. The investment and expansion of this line is provides the possibility of additional economic growth in the area.

In addition to sewer line expansions, significant upgrades must be completed at the Lakewood Waste Water Authority in Lake Odessa, Michigan. The authority is operating near capacity and improvements must be made before the company can expand its operations in Ionia County. Herbruck’s is currently working with Lake Odessa and the Lakewood Waste Water Authority on upgrade plans.

Huff and Son Erosion Control

When Ron Huff decided to relocate to Ionia and set up Huff and Son Erosion Control, he faced a number of business unknowns and challenges. As the company worked through its startup strategy, Huff discovered ICEA’s website and inquired about assistance doing business in Ionia County.

Jennifer Wangler, Business Development Manager for ICEA and The Right Place, worked with Huff for several months, providing assistance and referrals to a variety of local businesses in Ionia County, and investors in ICEA. From assisting Huff with site location possibilities, to connecting the company to area supply chain resources and legal assistance, Huff and Son Erosion Control received the support and assistance the company needed to succeed in Ionia County.

Cargill Kitchen Solutions(35 new jobs, $27 million investment)

Cargill Kitchen Solutions’ Bonanza Road complex intends to invest $27 million at the company’s egg processing facility and add 35 new positions in the next two years, as a result of increased business contracts. The project will allow Cargill Kitchen Solutions in Odessa Township to continue increasing capacity and facilitate job creation in the surrounding communities of Ionia County.

“ICEA’s willingness, ability and timeliness in stepping up in support of our initiative was impressive and appreciated,” said John Orsucci, Manager Marketing and Customer Services, Cargill Kitchen Solutions. “We are excited to move forward together, creating great new long-term jobs that will contribute to the success of Ionia County and the great state of Michigan.”

In 2013, Cargill Kitchen Solutions received support for the company’s first expansion, a $10.6 million investment and 28 new jobs.

Workforce Development Collaboration

The Ionia County Economic Alliance (ICEA) values its partnership with Central Area Michigan Works! Consortium. The work that we do is in many ways about partnerships and how we work together to serve the businesses in our community.

This year, The Right Place, Inc. and The Ionia County Economic Alliance (ICEA) received a Michigan Works! Association Prosperity Award for its regional collaboration efforts to provide local employment and training opportunities to the Ionia County business community.

Specifically, ICEA was nominated and recognized for its ongoing work with Lake Odessa-based APEC (Automated Process Equipment Corporation). Working in collaboration with Central Area Michigan Works! Consortium and ICEA, APEC took advantage of several talent resources, including: Pure Michigan Talent Connect, Incumbent Worker training funds, and On-the-Job Training funds. These programs helped APEC not only find new talent, but improve the skill set of its existing labor force.

The Prosperity Awards recognize significant accomplishments within Michigan communities that showcase economic impact resulting from newly created jobs, transformational training and effective talent pipeline development. Award winners include business, Michigan Works! agencies, partners and workers from each talent district.

Broadband Development

The Ionia County Economic Alliance is committed to providing fast, reliable access to broadband services in Ionia County. To improve this vital piece of infrastructure, we are partnering with Connect Michigan, a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating the expansion of broadband access, adoption and use throughout the State of Michigan.

By the Numbers

Ionia-Montcalm Manufacturers Council

This year, ICEA and the Montcalm Economic Alliance collaborated to establish the Ionia-Montcalm Manufacturers Council. The council is dedicated to the business success of the region’s manufacturing industry. Its vision is to be the local forum for advancing manufacturing success in Ionia and Montcalm Counties. Members will work together in a collaborative environment to promote, facilitate, enable and advocate for advancing a “best-in-class” manufacturing sector.
