A note from Fr. Chris -

On Mission Update: I would like to take this opportunity to inform all parishioners of a few important updates regarding the On Mission process. Last week I invited Parish Services (from the diocese) to meet with the clergy team and me, members of all parish staffs, and with the Leadership Team of our grouping. Listed below are some highlights and outcomes of what was presented and discussed during the meetings:

• Acknowledgement that during this time of transition many parishioners are feeling confused about next steps in the merger process and how we will exactly become a new parish.

• We need to acknowledge that the changes we are facing are sometimes challenging and create a sense of loss while at the same time many are feeling excited about new opportunities to bring all our resources together (human, financial, ministerial) in service to one parish with more vibrant ministry.

• We learned the difference between a parish and a church. A parish is a territory (geographic region), with people and a priest(s). Churches are sacred buildings designated for divine worship.

• Distinguishing between parishes and churches is important for us as we move closer to our merger. In January 2020 our three parishes will merge into one new parish. This means that the current parishes will cease to exist and we will become one new entity. In January 2020 none of our three church buildings will close. When we merge, the new parish will receive a new name and the church buildings will retain their current names.

• At the time of merger, all assets and liabilities of the former parishes become one. There will no longer be separate budgets, checking accounts, offertory envelopes, etc. All will become one under the name of the new parish.

The Leadership Team discussed some of the following challenges/concerns with regard to our grouping:

1) Financial sustainability, 2) Maintaining different parish cultures 3) Many of our parishioners live outside our boundaries which impacts volunteerism with our

ministries and programs 4) Each of the church buildings in our grouping has a specific distinction known to many

throughout the diocese – how will we be able to maintain them all, especially if we face greater financial constraints.

The Leadership Team discussed some of the following hopes and dreams for our new parish: • Building new relationships with each other • Increasing and strengthening lay involvement to support evangelization and service • Building stronger relationships with community around us • Offering a variety of spiritual and liturgical experiences so that everyone feels welcome

We must all remember that the overarching vision for On Mission is to realign all of our resources to fulfill better the mission of Jesus Christ. The mission of Jesus is for his followers (that’s us) to “go and make disciples.” We are called to consider how we can become an even more vibrant and sustainable Catholic community in the City Center Parishes.

~Becoming One~ Under the Protection of the Merciful Jesus

A little more than eight months ago, I arrived on the doorstep of this brand new grouping of 5 churches and 4 parishes. I was overwhelmed with the kindness of you all, welcoming me and ready to help out at every turn. I am very thankful for all that you did to help make the transition in our parishes easier.

This week, we find ourselves looking at more changes. St. Patrick-St. Stanislaus is part of the formation of a new grouping and the remaining parishes will become one parish in the new year. I am making a change as well. I have accepted a position with Renew the I Do, working with engaged and married couples, guiding them in the process of preparing for marriage while embracing the grace of the Sacrament.

A few weeks ago, my family joined Epiphany Parish and we look forward to being a part of the parish community.

I am so very grateful to each one of you for your acceptance and support during these changing times. Please keep me in your prayers as I will pray for all of you.

I look forward to seeing you in church!

Praying for God’s peace in our hearts—

Dolores Shipe

AMERICAN HISTORY THIS WEEK IN BLACK HISTORY

June 30, 1915 Jurist and Royal Air Force (RAF) Flight Lieutenant John Henry Smythe, was born June 30, 1915, in the West African port city of Freetown, Sierra Leone. On November 18, 1942, on his twenty-eighth mission over Europe, his bomber was shot down and he was wounded. Enemy troops found him hiding in a barn Smythe later recalled; “The Germans couldn’t believe their eyes. I’m sure that’s what saved me from being shot immediately. To see a black man—an officer at that—was more than they could come to terms with. They just stood there gazing.”

OUR MISSION STATEMENT It is the mission of the people of Saint Patrick-Saint Stanislaus Kostka Parish to be ambassadors for Christ. All are welcome in our diverse and historic faith community in the Strip District. We strive to nurture and to grow in the sacramental

life and tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Everything we do is for the greater glory of God.

It's always a joy to welcome different groups to serve at the Red Door! Where our guests truly enjoy and value the presence and stability of regular volunteers

and build relationships with them, they also enjoy visiting groups as they bring their own expression of hospitality. This could not have been more true than when recently the Red Door welcomed two groups from both the Renaissance Hotels and Concord Hospitality Enterprises/Marriott. They both served on different mornings in the same week, and given both groups had served at the Red Door previously, the mornings ran seamlessly. The ministry is grateful for the enthusiasm and service of these local hotels as well as all the surrounding businesses that support

the Red Door program!

Welcome to our Parish! St. Benedict the Moor parish received a beautiful email from a family who was visiting Pittsburgh from Indiana. They had an amazing, welcoming and prayerful experience at Mass! They were so moved by their visit, they wanted to let the parish know.“My wife, myself, and our friends had the opportunity to celebrate Mass with you on Sunday, June 2. Notice that I used the word “celebrate,” and that is not a word that I use to describe “going to Mass” very often. To be honest, we were completely blown away from the time we entered your church until the time we left. Never have we been greeted by so many individuals upon entering...and greeted in such a manner that we really felt welcome to be joining you.” In the end, they wanted to take home the excitement and passion they experienced. “If we could only bottle up and share the spirit of welcome, love community and celebration that you demonstrated to us that would be quite a miracle.” Every person visiting our parishes should walk away with an experience like this!

July 1 St. Junipero Serra

Junipero Serra, born in 1731, was a Franciscan priest from Spain. In 1749, Fr. Junipero decided to take on the mission of

traveling to the New World to live among the people, teaching them the Good News of Jesus Christ. He traveled to Mexico and then to the United States in

California establishing nine new missions in California, including San Fernando, Baja, San Diego and San Francisco.

Fr. Junipero ministered to the Native Americans,

sometimes becoming their advocate on governmental issues. Through his ministry, thousands of Native

Americans converted to Catholicism.

Fr. Junipero died at his mission San Carlos in 1784. He is remembered for his dedication and zeal for his faith and

for bringing Catholicism to California.

In the 1940s, a movement was started toward his can-onization. He was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 1988 and canonized a Saint

in September, 2015 by Pope Francis.

His Feast Day is July 1st.

Corner with the Saints

Our newly ordained priests! We have four new priests in our diocese! Keep them in your prayers as they begin their new assignments.

Prayer for Priests by Pope Benedict XVI

Lord Jesus Christ, eternal High Priest, you offered yourself to the Father on the altar of the Cross and through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit gave your priestly people a share in your redeeming sacrifice. Hear our prayer for the sanctification of our priests. Grant that all who are ordained to the ministerial

priesthood may be ever more conformed to you, the divine Master. May they preach the Gospel with pure heart and clear conscience. Let them be shepherds according to your own Heart, single- minded in service to you and to the Church and shining examples of a holy, simple and joyful life. Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, your Mother and ours, draw all priests and the flocks entrusted to their care to the

fullness of eternal life where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN

Sts. John and Paul continue their Boldly Catholic Speaker Series on August 20 at 7 p.m. in the church, as

they welcome Paul Kengor, author of A Pope

and A President.

There is no cost for the presentation.
