coverage of Milwaukee’s business commuity.

WHEN I WAS ASKED TO CONSIDER serving as president of the Milwaukee Press Club last August, I thought about the club’s long his-tory and its strong board, which I have had the pleasure of serving on for the last several years.

Unlike other boards, the Milwaukee Press Club board is a work-ing body where members are always volunteering to help plan an event or recruit a new member. And those board members have been kept quite busy this past year with the Press Club’s growing roster of events.

Our signature event, the city’s birthday party, drew its largest crowd in years as it has become a can’t-miss networking event. Where else can you go and find business and community leaders network-ing with a long list of elected officials, including Mayor Tom Barrett,

County Executive Chris Abele and Po-lice Chief Ed Flynn.

In 2013, we added a new of event called “Behind the Headlines,” which presents a panel discussion of commu-nity leaders talking about the major topics impacting southeastern Wis-consin. They are then questioned by a three-person media panel. Over the past year, we have held events focusing on the impact of the federal Affordable Care Act, the increase in entrepreneur-ship and innovation in the Milwaukee area, the business case for promoting women and the push for a new arena Downtown.

In each case, these events have been well-attended and prompted interest-ing discussions and debates about these major issues. And they have made news, something we believe should happen at all Press Club events.

I want to thank board members Marilyn Krause, Mary Van de Kamp Nohl, Jim Nelson and Jody Lowe for all of their efforts in putting together these events.

We have also continued our strong series of newsmaker events held at the Newsroom Pub. One of the most ex-citing newsmaker luncheons featured the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Frank Almond, just days after the po-lice recovered the multimillion-dollar Stradivarius that was stolen from Al-mond in a case that received worldwide media attention. I want to thank board member Steve Jagler, who has led our newsmakers effort for many years.

I also want to thank Lori Richards and Jody Lowe for their hard work in finding corporate sponsors for our many events. Our events are a financial

success as a result of their efforts.One of the biggest efforts currently underway by the Press Club is

an overhaul of our website. We have spent several months reviewing our website and identifying opportunities to improve the information presented and additional ways to provide services to our members.

We have chosen a local vendor to greatly improve the usability of our website and increase the information that we can provide to our members, including adding a section that will list open media positions in the area.

I really want to thank our website subcommittee, which consisted of Jim Nelson, Mary Van de Kamp Nohl, Jody Lowe and Fraser En-german, for their hard work in putting together the request for pro-posals and selecting the firm that will work on our website.

Any president’s letter needs to include an update on the club’s financial condition and I’m happy to say we are in a very solid position. Thanks to the effort of Mueller Communica-tions, Inc. President and Press Club Treasurer Carl Mueller. He has trained us all to make sure we ask, “What would Carl say?” before we approve any club expense.

And the Press Club would not be the strong organization it is without the hard work of Joette Richards, our club adminis-trator. I am constantly amazed by the way Joette keeps every-thing organized – from setting up for all of our events to orga-

nizing our popular Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism awards contest. Thank you, Joette, for everything you do.

Being president of the Press Club has been a very humbling experience. When you consider the fact that we are the oldest continuously operating press club in North America, you know how special this organization is. But if you ever need a remind-er, I urge you to check out the signatures from so many prom-inent people that line the walls of the Newsroom Pub. This is a special organization and one that all of its members should be very proud to be involved with.

I want to congratulate our Headline Award winners Mi-chael Pink, Milwaukee Ballet artistic director, and Stephen Ro-ell, recently retired CEO of Johnson Controls. I have had the honor of getting to know Michael and Steve over the last de-cade and fully understand the important role they have played in our community.

It is also an honor to award our esteemed Sacred Cat to Jon-athan Alter, who is a multi-media journalist, national author, reporter, columnist and NBC News political analyst.

To them, and to all of the winners of the MPC Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism Awards: congratulations.

WHEN IT COMES TO being dialed into the powers that be in the Washington, D.C., Jonathan Alter has few peers.

Alter spent 28 years at Newsweek, where he was a senior editor, columnist and wrote more than 50 cover stories. He has also writ-ten for The New York Times, The Washing-ton Post, The Washington Monthly, The At-lantic, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, The New Republic, Bloomberg View and more. Since 1996, Alter has been an analyst and con-tributing correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC. He is currently an executive pro-ducer of “Alpha House,” a political comedy created by Garry Trudeau and starring John

Goodman. It’s for these reasons and more that the Milwaukee Press Club selected the award-winning author, reporter, columnist and television news analyst as the 2014 Sa-cred Cat Award honoree.

Hoping to glean some of his insider knowledge and historical perspective, we asked him about the national political land-scape in 2014 and beyond.

How do you think history will remember President Obama?It’s too soon to say for sure, but in addition to being remembered forever in the U.S. for being the first black president, I think

Obama will be remembered for ending a long era in our history when, if you or your child got sick, you had to sell your home or declare personal bankruptcy. Unless Obamacare is repealed, which is unlikely, future generations won’t have to worry about this. The many flaws in Obamacare will fade in importance next to the ban on discrimination against those with preexisting conditions.

If the Republicans win control of both houses this November, would that effectively end President Obama’s second term?No. Presidents have plenty of power – particularly in foreign affairs – even if the other party controls Congress. Ei-senhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush all faced Congresses controlled by the other party, though the partisanship was less.

What will become of the Tea Party?People will recognize it for what it is: a collection of old, white, anti-Washington conservatives. Such voters will always ex-ist but the name is already becoming pe-jorative, which means it will soon slip into disuse.

Do you think Hillary Clinton will run for president in 2016? Yes, if her health stays good. She wants a woman president and knows she is the best bet for one.

What do you think of the chances for Gov. Scott Walker and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as presidential candidates?If Walker wins reelection convincingly, he will be a strong candidate. If he wins narrowly, I think he will still run because the race is wide open. He could surprise a lot of people because there’s a hunger for a governor this time, though Jeb Bush run-ning would make it hard for him. Ryan seems more focused on being chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and eventually speaker, though he is the most popular Republican in most polls and would make a plausible candidate. I think either would lose to Clinton. ■

MICHAEL PINK HAS MADE headlines for the Milwaukee Ballet for more than a decade.

Pink, the longest serving artistic director in the company’s history, talks with passion about the company and its accomplishments under his leadership. That includes a recent nationally televised broadcast on PBS of “Pe-ter Pan,” a ballet that he choreographed, per-formed by the company he leads.

But Pink also speaks with the optimism and enthusiasm of an entrepreneur who sees an opportunity for arts groups and a medical facility to work together to meld art, move-ment and health under a single roof.

Pink likes to talk about the stages of his career, from a successful run in England as a dancer to work as a choreographer, creator of original works and then artistic director.

That journey led him to Milwaukee, where he found the Milwaukee Ballet had a

lot going for it, including its own orchestra and a top-flight costume shop.

“When I came here, I saw the potential within the organization,” Pink says.

Under his leadership, the company has staged numerous world premieres and worked more closely with other performing arts organizations, such as the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. He also has led a spring showcase that highlights works by new cho-reographers.

Pink says he has grown to appreciate the richness of the community, its vibrant cultur-al scene and the support that the arts receive.

“It’s a place that has a history, tradition and is blessed with some very loyal families,” he says. “I understand it when I hear people say they came for a year and stayed for 37.”

Like other arts groups, the ballet strug-gled during the recent economic downturn.

Yet Pink says he’s “amazed at the giving cli-mate” in Milwaukee.

“Our company is doing extremely well considering what we’ve all been through with the economy,” Pink says.

He has put his stamp on the company by nurturing young up-and-coming danc-ers and encouraging new choreographers, says long-time ballet board member Donna Baumgartner.

“He’s attracted dancers from all over and he feeds them and nurtures their careers,” she says. “He portrays them as elite athletes, which is what they are.”

Pink’s next act might be the most difficult – and potentially the most rewarding for the community. He’s helping lead the Harmony Initiative, a partnership between the ballet, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Medical College of Wisconsin. The vision is for a new facility – including a home for the ballet, a ballet school, a performance space and a sports medicine clinic – in Downtown Milwaukee.

The $40 million project would be “a one-stop shop for people to be, to move and to experience movement,” Pink says. The latest plans call for renovating the Laacke & Joys building downtown, along the Milwaukee River.

“It’s a well-thought-out and methodical project,” he says.

Baumgartner says the project represents an important part of Pink’s legacy.

“Nobody in the community has been more collaborative in the arts than Michael,” she says. “He supports a whole arts ecosys-tem in Milwaukee.” ■

your commitment to serving the community make you a true inspiration and a role model.

WHEN YOU TALK TO STEPHEN ROELL, you are as likely to hear about how much time he spent working in the community as you are to hear him talk about the record growth he oversaw at Johnson Controls Inc.

Roell, who retired as chairman of Wis-consin’s largest public company at the end of 2013, believes it is important for CEOs to be involved in the community. It was a lesson he learned from one of his predecessors, Fred Brengel, who served as head of Johnson Con-trols from 1967 to 1987.

“He very simply stated that those of us that are fortunate and benefit from our success at JCI need to help those in need,” Roell says. “It’s really that simple.”

“We’re very fortunate in Milwaukee to have CEOs that get it and devote their time and resources,” he says. “The key is going be-yond that and getting the entire leadership

team and employee base engaged.”When asked what community effort he’s

most proud of, Roell has a hard time sin-gling out one.“There are many,” he says. “I feel particularly attached to the United Way of Greater Milwaukee, as does everyone who has ever served in a co-chair role. Having the opportunity to be a co-chair and then serving as chairman of the board was very rewarding. The opportunity to be associated with Hunger Task Force, the Boys & Girls Club, United Ne-gro College Fund, the Medical College of Wis-consin and Wheaton Franciscan have all been great experiences.”

And those within JCI aren’t the only ones who see Roell as an example of communi-ty-minded leadership.

Julia Taylor, president of the Greater Mil-waukee Committee, says soon after Roell took over as CEO, he invited her and Gloria

Ricks of the Milwaukee Chapter of UNCF to discuss an ambitious plan to raise $1 million in scholarships for UNCF and students from Milwaukee.

She said with the help of Roell and fellow Johnson Controls executive Chuck Harvey, they were able to meet the goal in just three years and help dozens of Milwaukee students attend college.

“Steve never sought the spotlight,” Taylor says. “[He] pushed for big results and worked side by side to accomplish the goal of opening the door for so many young people to attend college.”

Taylor says she remembers Roell’s son speaking at a community event and point-ing out that his father ensured each sibling received a stellar education – a decision that sometimes strained the family’s pocketbook.

“As a result, [he said], for years there was never any furniture in the living room,” Taylor recalls. “Steve would point to the empty room and tell his children to remember the priori-ties in life. Education was more important for Steve’s family than possessions.”

Roell started at Johnson Controls in 1982 and served as senior vice president and chief financial officer from 1991 to 2004. He was ap-pointed CEO in October 2007 and chairman in January 2008. During his time as chairman and CEO, the company grew to record levels with revenues of $41.8 billion in fiscal 2012 with roughly 170,000 global employees.

The former CEO is known for his inno-vative efforts during his time at Johnson Con-trols, so much so that the company named its Third Ward innovation center in Milwaukee and an automotive design center in Holland, Mich., after him.

Future Johnson Controls innovation hubs around the world will also bear his name, in-cluding a center in the planned China head-quarters in Shanghai. ■
