BELIEVE IT OR NOT Strange are the WaysIOC's enlightened management very kindly announced 'Felicitation Award'. The silver lining of the scheme is that it is for the first time in the history of IOC that the Welfare measures are announced with focus on “age criteria” - a real moral boost for the senior citizens. No scheme could be perfect howsoever formulated thoughtfully with innovation. Always there are anomalies, certain categories are left out e.g. retirees from IOBL, IBP, spouses of deceased retirees etc. etc. However these must be taken care by IROWA on priority basis.IOC has many feathers in announcing welfare schemes i.e. Chairman's Lunch, Distribution of Gold Coins, Felicitation Award etc.It is equally pertinent to mention that such good measures by IOC are based on human relations However, the grace is lost due to the faulty or over enthusiastic implementation. 1. Eight years ago Mktg. HO Mumbai organized a get-to-gather

wherein retirees were also invited. A special table was arranged with a placard 'grievance table'.

2. Once again when the Gold Coins were to be distributed Mktg. HO Mumbai handed over the Gold Coins for managerial cadre retirees standing in que along with the bargainable cadre retirees. (If my information is correct the distribution was done at the reception table). The importance of the occasion was undermined.

3. NR Mktg. under the leadership of the then General Manager Shri J. S. Kaushal organized a graceful function on 2 different days -

ndone for managerial and 2 day for bargainable cadre. Gold coins were hand over by HODs followed by sumptuous lunch on both days.

Late Shri B B Bakhshi, President IROWA New Delhi and Shri R D Mathur, Editor approached the then DIR (HR) Shri V C Agrawal to express our displeasure on distribution of coins at Mktg. HO Mumbai. Shri V C Agrawal advised “we announced a policy decision and have not issued any guidelines for its implementation. I am happy to hear that NR Mktg. has organized a graceful function be-fitting the occasion. You know Mr Mathur it is a matter of individual's attitude.”

4. The retirees have been looking forward for the Chairman's Lunch year after year. This important gathering is now marred first by division of invitees GM and above retirees and second batch of the rest on the pretext of paucity of space. The reason could not be easily digestable. Further to this NR Mktg. organized the Chairman's Lunch by mixing the bargainable cadre with those below GMs rank touching the sentiments of this group of retirees once again.

5. It is pertinent to mention that NR Mktg. under the leadership of Shri Harsh Sachdev ED NR and Shri Manish Patil CGM HR NR and their dedicated team has done a splendid job with immaculate planning. Introduction of the card for lunch for the retirees as well for one attendant must have put a hold on gate crashers witnessed in the past Chairman's Lunch. Hats off to Shri Sachdev and Shri Patil and their dedicated team for a wonderful job.

Someone has rightly said that there are people who are more loyal than the king, unmindful of the sentiments of the people, against the very well-intended and large hearted schemes of enlightened management of IOC.

God bless those who matter. Between us.

Respected Editor,

Let our Association on behalf OF ALL the retired officers unanimously in one voice convey a very big H e a r t f u l t h a n k s t o I O C ' s E N L I G H T E N E D MANAGEMENT for the announcement of Felicitation Awards over the age of 70 years plus on the retirees attaining the milestone age coming in the festival month of lights(Diwali) which has lightened all our hearts.

I was thinking that IOC will be always there to mitigate our hardship sooner or later (after testing our patience). This is like a big feast once in five years but in between also we require some sustenance and I am sure our Association will take up these in their meeting with IOC Management.

1. Payment of ex-gratia without deduction of LIC's contribution as per Standard option clause.

2. Revision in medical benefits for both Domestic and hospitalisation which is long overdue..

As yu have rightly said in some editorial, our demands have no end but let us be magnanimouus to accept what is reasonably offered and live happily for the rest of our lives, always cherishing IOC's memories.

Thanking you and with best regards.

Letter to Editor

Sir,

I am grieved to learn from editorial i.e. Frankly Speaking published in October 2017 that due to petition on single point agenda referred to court by the 31.12.2006 retirees has lately made the entire pending issue complicated for due settlement.

Such unhealthy division amongst the retirees is, no doubt considered an unfortunate step as a result of which the basic interest of majority of retirees would be severely impaired.

It is high time to ponder rationally as to how this confrontation or feud can be suitably resolved to pave the way for a wholesome scenario.

Swiggy is Amma and Uber is AppaWith children's day just gone, I was just musing on how children are these days. OK, I admit they are a million times smarter than us with their smartphones but what about their persona, their attitudes, interests and their general psyche?

I remember that years ago when I was a kid, a small cup of "payasam" or "kheer" on Sunday would be a heavenly delight for all of us. We used to look forward to that big occasion and sniff the aroma of that delicious porridge wafting out of the kitchen ; take a sneak-peek to check if our moms had really added those golden cashews and raisins bobbing up and down in the milky bubbles and look anxiously at the clock to see if the needle was really moving or not, towards our lunchtime!

Today, moms are no match for Swiggy and there is no magic left on sundays too.

Chunky cheese balls, crispy french fries, or delicious desserts like Tiramisu are just a call away. No more yearning for treats and no more earning them either- it's all just "made to order" within minutes.

No more talk of "mom's cooking" but it's more of "swiggy booking" these days.

Dads are no exception either. No more begging dads to drop us to the tuition, dance class or friend's place. No more asking permissions or waiting for parents to pick up. "I'm going out today, my Uber is on my way!" This is what is conveyed to us, if at all, mostly when our grown up children.

Well, Swiggy and Uber may be a blessing for working moms and dads but they have grossly eroded the fine qual i t ies of adjustment, accommodation and appreciation in our children.

Children are becoming more demanding and selfish with no thought spared for their parents' efforts / sacrifices while bringing them up or their own welfare. All desires are instantly gratified. There is no scope for patience or perseverance.

Dads and Moms have become ATMs to just unload cash and satisfy the needs of children. No questions asked!

I'm not against these user-friendly apps but am only anxious that they are eroding our children's value system. Children are becoming increasingly opinionated and self-obsessed. The values of caring and sharing are slowly on the wane.

It will be no wonder if your kid starts to feel that "Swiggy is my amma and Uber or Paytm is my Appa".

We must make our children understand that life is full of imperfections and disappointments and that the beauty of life is not in the instant gratification of desires but in the patient pursuit of them.

Let life be full of simple pleasures - a little charred, a little scarred, but never marred!

I am proud to be Municipal School Teacher.

Those lucky moments.

My life is filled with happiness.

Being a music teacher in the municipal school, it was my responsibility to organize cultural programs of the school. I used to work with limited resources for preparing our students for the city's competitions. Our students were getting awards in competitions among municipal schools. However, the forthcoming open competition was a much bigger challenge. I collected limited details about the venue and the number of schools participating.

I can not forget the amount of practice my students had to do for this annual open school competition under the Uday Shankar Memorial Trust in Bharti Vidyalaya Bhawan.

La te Shr i K K Sharma was rd3 General Secretary of IROWA

(1999 – 2003).

During infancy of the Association he made commendable efforts to enrol members across the country. Mr Sharma developed rules and regulations for consolidating the associations at 7 major cities under

one umbrella as 'Apex Body' to have a common agenda and a single window discussion with Indianoil

stManagement. He was founder member and 1 General Secretary of Indianoil Benevolent Fund.

A Legend Passes Away

I took the children of my school to participate in that c o n t e s t , b u t con t ra ry to my expectat ion the competition was among the top r a n k i n g p u b l i c schools of Delhi. Ours being the

only Municipal School. Moreover, the participating students of public schools were much senior to my students and their dance costumes, jewellery, makeup etc. was far far better.

The judge for the competition was none other than famous dancer, Sonal Mansingh.

The situation justified our going back without participating as it was not level playing field where on the one side there were best public schools of Central and South Delhi and on the other municipal school of a small colony in West Delhi - Subhash Nagar.

Unaware of my dilemma, children were waiting for their turn - laughing while enjoying the program. I was in great confusion, what should I do - go back or face the challenge ? Seeing the enthusiasm of my students. I had no choice but to encourage my students to do their best.

My children's dance was very modest compared to the confident students of leading public schools of the city.

The results were unbelievable as our school was adjudged second. My students were so small and so much impressed with the pomp and show that even while receiving their prize, from the celebrity Sonal Mansigh they did not feel the importance of the moment and the joy for me.

I am proud to be municipal school teacher.

I was not aware that a bigger surprise for me was in store.

The fact that our students had competed and won against leading public schools of the city had a positive affect on their academic performance, confidence and sense of pride in being students of our school.

Pursuit of TreasureMy story would be one of its sorts, un ique and rare but most of the minds function like this. The mind in “pursuit of treasure”.

Few lucky ones inherit a fortune, some try their luck in the stock market, some others may go for KBC, some even take the court route to extort. There are innumerable ways to get more and more money.

We decorate our homes with artifacts, furniture and furnishings, expensive crockery for our status and comfort knowing fully well that it is maximum one bed which we can occupy. We go for shopping and stock our cupboards with branded clothes, designer jewellery, and accessories knowing very well that it is one set which we can wear. We stock our kitchen with food items and we know that we can eat maximum two chapaties.

We bring up our children giving them the best with the hope that they are the ones to look after our needs in old age and keep us in good spirits – “Budhape ka sahara”.

With the technology at our finger tips we keep busy without work on social media. The more friends we have the merrier we are.

We spend a lifetime in this world to have more and more and what we accumulate is anxiety, greed, anger and impatience. In this hustle and bustle “for more” we miss out on one important point and that is – all this is illusion. In Hindi “Bhram”.

In Giving We Receive few years ago I was walking with a friend in a Muir

Awood which is very close to San Francisco. Its a red wood forest. We came upon a park ranger. He

was explaining to some tourists the secret of the forest.

He told the sequoia and red wood trees are the largest trees on this planet. Some of them are hundreds or even thousands of years old. But interestingly their roots do not grow deep. Then he told that these trees have been standing for centuries and centuries enduring massive windstorms, freezing blizzards, devastating earthquakes - without deep roots.

How do they keep standing? Then the Ranger stopped so that we could ponder over this mystery. And then he went on to reveal to us the underground secret of the redwood forest.

Since I like underground things so I was more attentive. He said that the roots under the ground reach outward seeking the roots of other redwood trees and when they meet they intertwine making a permanent bond with each other. In which we call the Redwood trees in the entire forests are, either directly or indirectly, give support to each other. Unity is their strength. They reach out to care for each other. Even the newborn baby readwords with their tiny roots are given shelter by the ancient giants. In the Muir woods nature is giving humanity a very crucial lesson. Get our real strength is in giving care to the and support each other. We are care takers of the divine property. Wisdom is to understand this simple Universal principle that in giving we receive. Let us make happiness our attitude to travel through the year in 2019

1. Stay in gratitude. When you appreciate what you have, what you have appreciates in value. So basically, being grateful for the goodness that is evident in life brings joy and fulfilment in life.

2. Art of optimism. Winners have the ability to manufacture their own optimism. No matter what the situation, one who is strong and steady will always find a wayo put an optimistic spin to the situation and move on. For them failure is only an opportunity to grow and learn a new lesson in life.

3. Avoid comparison. Comaring self to someone else can be poisonous. If 2 are somehow better than the person we are comparing ourselves to, it gives us unhealthy sense of superiority. If we are worse than the person we are comparing ourselves to we usually discredit the hard work that we have done and dismiss all the progress that we have made. Somehow this type of social comparison is unhealthy.

4. Heart of compassion. Performing an act of kindness releases serotonin in your brain ( serotonin is a substance that has tremendous health benefits including making us more blissful). Selflessly helping someone is a super powerful way to feel good from inside. It is a cheer that spirals to increase joy quotient within.

5. Nurture Relationships. The happiest people on the planet are the ones who have deep meaningful relationships. Studies have shown that peoples' mortality rates are doubled when they are lonely. Good friends are healthy relations add value and meaning to life.

As I walked in I noticed a sweater with a price tag of $3000. Next to the sweater was a pair of Jeans for $4000 .The socks were $8000 !

I went looking for a salesperson and found one in the jewelry Dept.

She was showing a man a $11 Rolex watch. I looked in the glass case and there was a 4 carat diamond ring for $7.

Shocked I asked the salesperson "How could a Rolex watch sell for $ 11? ,and a cheap pair of socks sell for $8000"?

She said "someone sneaked into the store last night and changed the price tags on everything ".

"Everyone is confused, people are acting like they have lost their sense of value. They are willing to pay lots of $s for things of little value and very few $s for things of great value "

"Its like they dont know what is really valuable and what's not " I hope we get the price tags back on right soon. I hate seeing people pay way too much for things of little value "

I woke up startled !

May be life is like my dream.

May be someone sneaked into our lives and changed the price tag on everything.

May be they marked up the value of fame, money and power.

And put a huge discount on the value of Love, Kindness, Family and Friends.

Maybe we are all living this dream.

I hope we wake up.!!!!

AUTOWLA smiled and said - why not madam? Come on.

Tanvi sat in the auto. As soon as auto-started, Tanvi checked with the auto driver if he will respond to a question?

The auto driver conveyed his acceptance.

Two-three days ago you addressed me mata ji, yesterday - sister and today Madam! Why so?

Autowalla laughed and told the truth. Whatever you understand, but the attire of the passenger affects our thinking -

You were in a sari two or three days back and commanded sense of respect in each and every heart, because my mother always wears saris. That's why addressed you as "Mata ji".

Yesterday you were in Salwar-kurta. My sister wears Salwar-kurta.That is why the feeling of affection for you got awakened and I addressed you "sister".

Today you are in jeans-top, and at least in these clothes do not wake up the feelings of a mother or sister, that is why I called you "Madam" ..!

From morning till evening, from evening to late night, from night to morning ... .....

* It really seems like there is nothing else in life other than the kitchen and food *.

Every woman's dilemma, when and what to make. * Sometimes it seems I should cook myself *.

Sorry, do not want to talk like this but it looks like this.

Not that I do not like to cook.

* I like to cook, and people say that I cook very tasty food*.

* Everything has a limit *. If you have to stay in the kitchen for 8 hours in 24 hours, how will it feel?

In our household no one likes to eat Tinda - lauki - Brinjal - Bitter gourd.

So what's up?

Kitchen Calling (A Satire)

IROWA NEWS

Potato and Bhindi.Papa is a diabetic patient, so the potatoes are avoided.

My husband likes chickpeas cheese, Papa will not have these. Papa likes mangodi papad, my husband has not tasted these yet.

Now our beloved mother is undergoing dental treatment. She does not have any liking for rice khichri and upma. Porridge is the only option left for her.

Now listen to this story from night to morning.

I will suddenly remember at 12 o'clock to put the milk for making curd.

Soak the gram at 1 o'clock at night.

Will check at 2 o'clock if the kitchen motor is not on.

Remove bottle from the freezer at 3 o'clock.

If it is 4 o'clock, keep the curd in the fridge so that it does not turn sour.

* There is no end to kitchen calling *.

Children drink milk at 7 o'clock, Mom Papa take tea at 8 o'clock . Breakfast starts at 10 o'clock, husband 11 and mother 12.

Sasu mom lunch at 2 o'clock. Children at 3 o'clock Lunch is packed for my husband and Papa.

* Do not ask for dinner. *

Children at 8 o'clock. Papa at 9 o'clock. Mother 10 pm and my husband at 11 o'clock.

I have already told about night from 12 to 4.

If you speak the truth then this is not a satire. My life is reality *.

At first I used to cry, all of it was shaky, I was irritable all day.

Then someone explained to me, * What we can not change, accept it and enjoy it.

So now I tell it as a satire.

Ever since Robert was a child, he had a fobia of someone under his bed at night.

So he went to a Psychiatrist and told him "I've got problem. Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy."

"Just put yourself in my hands for one year", said the psychiatrist.

"Come, talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears."

"How much do you charge?"

'$200 per visit,' replied the doctor.

'I'll think of it and if needed I will come back to you,' Robert said.

Six months later he met the Psychiatrist on the street.

There is always an Indian way to solve a difficult problem...

'Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having?' he asked.

'Well, $200 a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money!

An Indian friend of mine cured me for the price of one plate biryani and a bottle of coke.

I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought myself a new SUV".

'Is that so!' with a bit of an attitude he said, 'and how, may I ask, did the friend cure you?'

He told me to "Sell the bed and sleep on a Mattress on the floor..."

Moral:

TO HELL WITH THOSE PSYCHI-ATRISTS.. For most of your problems, GO TALK TO YOUR friends !!

There is always an Indian way to solve a difficult problem...)

Only part of the body that has no blood supply is the cornea of the eye it receives oxygen directly from the air.

The human brain has a memory capacity which is the equivalent of more than 4 terabytes on a hard drive (1 Terabyte = 1024 GB).

A newborn child can breathe and swallow at the same time for up to 7 months.

Your skull is made up of 29 different bones.

Important Facts About Our Body

Congratulations Mr. Ravi Kumar Taneja

Various musicians and Ragaas were patronised by the rulers both during Hindu and Muslim eras but both took a back foot during British rule.

We have two types of energies - mental and physical. Multitasking of mind keeps on feasting on our mental energy till it finishes all of it. Both these energies can borrow from each other. The result is that apart from getting mentally tired we get physically exhausted when we use our mind which automatically goes into multitasking mode even when we try to focus on something important.

The fact that both types of energies affect balance energy in both categories is easily visible when we avoid doing mental work after physical activity. Similarly, our capacity for physical work comes down after an absorbing session of mental work.

If we develop taste for music, dance, acting etc. we tend to mentally focus on it while relaxing physically. As a consequence we tend to reduce our use of both physical and mental energy.

Music offers us wide range of choices as it has many forms. Classical, Jazz, Western, film, instrumental, vocal, Sufi, Ghazals, Qawallis and the list is endless.

Our mind habitually keeps on doing multi-tasking by its very nature. During meditation the mind keeps reducing the tasks till the number reduces to one - the thought that we are meditating.

Music therapy works through meditation. During meditation our energy consumption comes down and our body tends to align our internal organs through mild jerks in the body. The misalignment is caused by mental tension which in turn, is the result of our harping on the past excessively or thinking about the future too much.

Music Therapy

Contd. from Oct., 2018 Issue - concluding part.

Nerve impulses sent from the brain move at a speed of 274 km per hour.

A single human brain generates more electrical impulses in a day than all the telephones of the world combined,

The average human body contains enough sulphur to kill all the fleas on the average dog, enough carbon to make 900 pencils, enough potassium to fire a toy canon, enough fat to make 7 bars of soap and enough water to fill a 50 litre barrel.

IROWA NEWS

11 | IROWA NEWS JANUARY 2019

The ratio of our thoughts about past and future is in direct proportion to the time spent in the past and time available in future i.e. our age. Younger people think more about future whereas older people harp more on the past. However, exceptions are always there.

We can benefit from music therapy during good times as well as times when all other therapies and medication fail. Like homeopathic and Ayurvedic treatment music therapy does not produce any side effects. Also its timing and duration can be adjusted as per the situation.

Major drawback of music therapy is that the sound of musical instruments and voice of the singer can be disturbing to rest of the family and neighbours particularly when it is applied to patients with hearing disability. Though ear phones and head phones can be helpful but many people may not like using these during illness.

Music therapy is popular in some southern states but there are very few medical professionals using this form of therapy either singly or along with other forms of treatment elsewhere.

Music therapy (Shahnai by Mastereo Bismillah Khan) when tried on a patient having a number of medical complications - severe dementia, Parkinson's disease, paralysis, diabetes and speech impairment had definite effect on the patient who responded by raising one hand followed by the other hand. Playing his favourite film songs resulted in his shedding tears - an indication that he was listening to the music and enjoying.

It is a known fact that people having an ear for music generally lead healthier and happier lives. Most of the famous musicians have lived beyond 80 and 90 years.

From ancient times music has been our communication with God. Meera Bai communicated through prayer and devotional songs. Every saint has worshipped through music. Music gives us peace, dedication, aatmic anubhuti and self-evolvement with God.

Music affects nature - plants enjoy music which directly impacts their growth so do animals, birds, reptiles (snakes) acua life (Dolphins) flora and fauna.

On the negative side loud and disturbing music played in cars aggravates road rage and criminal tendency.

Once great musician Tansen was singing in the Darbar of Baadshah and the raag was Deepak. Even after several attempts lamps did not light up as Deepak Raag is known to light lamps. Ultimately he decided to approach his Guru Swami Haridas. The Guru accompanied Tansen to the Darbar where he sang the same raag and immediately the lamps lighted up. Tansen enquired from the Guru why did'nt the lamps light up when he (Tansen) sang?

Guru's reply was that you were singing for Akbar Baadshah in front of you and I sang for the Baadshah above.
