Range of application of the heater

Thewaterheateroperatingindependentlyofanengineisintendedforinstallationinthefollowingvehicles,dependingonitsheatingoutput:•Vehiclesofallkinds•Constructionmachinery•Agriculturalmachinery•Boats,shipsandyachts

•InstallationoftheheaterispermittedinvehiclesusedforthetransportofdangerousgoodsasperADR.

•Theheaterisnotapprovedforinstallationinvehiclecompartmentsusedbypersons(morethan8pas-sengerspaces)inClassM2 and M3vehicles(vehiclesforthetransportofpassengers/commercialbuses).

•TheheaterisnotapprovedforinstallationinthedriverorpassengercompartmentsofClassM1vehicles(vehiclesforthetransportofpassengers/cars)andClassNvehicles(vehiclesforthetransportofgoods).

Onaccountofitsfunctionalpurpose,theheaterisnot permittedforthefollowingapplications:•Long-termcontinuousoperation,e.g.forpre-heatingandheatingof:–Residentialrooms–Garages–Workhuts,weekendhomesandhuntinghuts–Houseboats,etc.

1 Introduction

Statutory regulations

TheFederalMotorTransportAuthorityhasissuedan“ECtypeapproval”,“EMCtype-approval”andtheapprovalforacomponentaccordingtoECER122andECE-R10fortheheaterforinstallationinmotorvehicleswiththefollowingofficialtype-approvalmarks,notedontheheaternameplate.

Regulations!Extract from Directive 2001 / 56 / EC Annex VII and ECE Regulation No. 122 of the European Parlia-ment and of the Council

General regulations

•Operating state display–Aclearlyvisibleoperatingdisplayintheuser'sfieldofvisionmustindicatewhentheheaterisswitchedonandoff.

Regulations concerning installation in the vehicle

• Scope–Subjecttodifferingstipulationsinthefollowingsection,combustionheatersmustbeinstalledac-cordingtotheprovisionsofDirective2001/56/ECAnnexVII.

–ItisassumedthatClassOvehicleswithheatersforliquidfuelconformtotheprovisionsofDirective2001/56/EC.

• Position of the heater–Partsofthestructureandothercomponentsneartheheatermustbeprotectedfromexcessiveheatexposureandpossiblefueloroilcontamination.

–Theheatermustnotposeafirehazardevenwhenitoverheats.Thisrequirementisdeemedtobefulfilledifadequateclearanceisensuredforallpartsduringinstallation,sufficientventilationisprovidedandfireproofmaterialsorheatshieldsareused.

–Theheatermustnotbemountedinthepassen-gercompartmentofvehiclesinclassM2 and M3. However,aheaterinahermeticallysealedenclosurewhichalsocomplieswiththeaforementionedcondi-tionsmaybeused.

–Thefactorynameplateorduplicateofitmustbeaffixedsothatitcanstillbeeasilyreadwhentheheaterisinstalledinthevehicle.

–Allappropriateprecautionsmustbetakenwhenarrangingtheheatertominimisetheriskofinjuriestopersonsordamagetootherproperty.

• Fuel supply–Thefuelintakeconnectionmustnotbelocatedinthepassengercompartmentandmustbesealedwithaproperlyclosinglidtopreventanyfuelleaks.

–Inheatersforliquidfuelwheretheheaterfuelisseparatefromthevehiclefuel,thetypeoffuelandintakeconnectionmustbeclearlyidentified.

–Awarningsignistobefixedtotheintakeconnec-tionindicatingthattheheatermustbeswitchedoffbeforerefuelling.

• Exhaust system–Theexhaustoutletmustbearrangedsoastopreventanypenetrationofexhaustfumesintothevehicleinteriorthroughtheventilationsystem,warmairintakesoropenwindows.

•Combustion air intake–Theairfortheheater'scombustionchambermustnotbesuckedinfromthevehicle'spassengercompartment.

–Theairintakemustbearrangedorprotectedinsuchawaythatitcannotbeblockedbyotherobjects.

•Automatic control of the heating system–Iftheenginefails,theheatingsystemmustbeauto-maticallyswitchedoffandthefuelsupplystoppedwithin5seconds.Theheatermayremaininopera-tionifamanualdevicehasalreadybeenactivated.

Theheaterisnotapprovedforinstallationinthedriver'scaborpassengercompartmentofClassM1vehicles(vehiclesforpassengertransport/cars)andNvehicles(vehiclesforthetransportofgoods).

•Compliancewiththestatutoryregulations,theaddi-tionalregulationsandsafetyinstructionsisprerequisiteforguaranteeandliabilityclaims.

FailuretocomplywiththestatutoryregulationsandsafetyinstructionsandincorrectrepairsevenwhenusingoriginalsparepartsmaketheguaranteenullandvoidandprecludeanyliabilityforJ.EberspächerGmbH&Co.KG.

•Subsequentinstallationofthisheatermustcomplywiththeseinstallationinstructions.

•Thestatutoryregulationsarebindingandmustalsobeobservedincountrieswhichdonothaveanyspecialregulations.

•WhentheheateristobeinstalledinvehiclesnotsubjecttotheGermanOrdinancefortheRegistra-tionofMotorVehicles(StVZO),forexampleships,thespeciallyvalidregulationsandinstallationinstructionsforthesespecialapplicationsmustbeobserved.

•Installationoftheheaterinspecialvehiclesmustcomplywiththeregulationsapplyingtosuchvehicles.

•Otherinstallationrequirementsarecontainedinthecorrespondingsectionsofthismanual.

ScopeThisannexappliestovehiclestowhichthespecialpro-visionsofDirective94/55/ECoftheADRAgreementforcombustionheatersandtheirinstallationapply.

Definition of termsThevehicledesignations“EX/II”,“EX/III”,“AT”,“FL”and“OX”accordingtoChapter9.1oftheADRAgree-mentDirectiveareusedforthepurposesofthisannex.

Technical regulations

General provisions (EX / II, EX / III, AT, FL and OX vehicles)

Avoid heating and ignitionThecombustionheatersandtheirexhaustgasroutingshallbedesigned,located,protectedorcoveredsoastopreventanyunacceptableriskofheatingorignitionoftheload.Thisrequirementshallbeconsideredasfulfilledifthefueltankandtheexhaustsystemoftheapplianceconformtoprovisionsin3.1.1.1and3.1.1.2.Compliancewiththeseregulationsshallbecheckedinthecompletevehicle.

Fuel tanksFueltanksforsupplyingtheheatershallconformtothefollowingregulations:•Intheeventofanyleakage,thefuelshalldraintothegroundwithoutcomingintocontactwithhotpartsofthevehicleortheload;

•fueltankscontainingpetrolshallbeequippedwithaneffectiveflametrapatthefilleropeningorwithaclosureenablingtheopeningtobekepthermeticallysealed.

Exhaust system and exhaust pipe layoutTheexhaustsystemaswellastheexhaustpipesshalllaidoutorprotectedtoavoidanydangertotheloadthroughheatingorignition.Partsoftheexhaustsystemsituateddirectlybelowthefueltank(diesel)shallhaveaclearanceofatleast100mmorbeprotectedbyathermalshield.

Switching on the combustion heaterThecombustionheatermayonlybeswitchedonmanu-ally.Automaticswitchingonviaaprogrammableswitchisnotpermitted.

EX / II and EX / III vehiclesCombustionheatersforgaseousfuelsarenotpermitted.

FL vehiclesCombustionheatersmustbeabletobetakenoutofservice/disabledatleastbythemethodsdescribedinthefollowing:a) Switchingoffmanuallyinthedriver‘scabinb) Switchingoffthevehicle‘sengine;inthiscasethe

heatermaybemanuallyswitchedbackonbythevehicledriver;

c) Startingupofafeedpumpinstalledinthevehicleforthedangerousgoodscarried.

Combustion heater after-runAfter-runningoftheswitchedoffcombustionheaterispermitted.Inthecasesnamedinthe„FLvehicles“paragraphunderlettersb)andc)thesupplyofcombus-tionairmustbeinterruptedbysuitablemeansafteramaximumafter-runperiodof40seconds.Onlycombus-tionheaterswhoseheatexchangersareverifiablynotdamagedbythereducedafter-runperiodof40secondsbeyondtheirusualuseperiodmaybeused.

•Donotoperatetheheateranywherewheretherearereadilyflammablematerials(e.g.drygrass,leaves,paper,etc.)intheareaoftheexhaustsystemorwhereignitablefumesanddustcanform,e.g.neara–fueldepot–coaldepot–wooddepot–graindepots,etc.

•Theheatermustbeswitchedoffwhenrefuelling.

•Whentheheaterismountedinasafetyhousingetc.,theinstallationcompartmentoftheheaterisnotastowagecompartmentandmustbekeptclear.

Inparticularfuelcanisters,oilcans,spraycans,gascartridges,fireextinguishers,cleaningrags,itemsofclothing,paperetc.mustnotbestoredortransportedonornexttotheheater.

•Defectfusesmustonlybereplacedbyfuseswiththeprescribedrating.

•Iffuelleaksfromtheheaterfuelsystem,arrangeforthedamagetoberepairedimmediatelybyaJEserv-icepartner.

•Whentoppingupthecoolant,onlyusethecoolantpermittedbythevehiclemanufacturer,seethevehicleoperatingmanual.Anyblendingwithunpermittedcoolantcancausedamagetotheengineandheater.

•After-runningoftheheatermustnotbeinterruptedprematurelye.g.bypressingthebatterydisconnectingswitch,apartfrominthecaseofanemergencystop.

Followinginstallation,attachthe“Switchoffheaterbeforerefuelling!”stickernearthetankfillerneck.

Accident prevention

Generalaccidentpreventionregulationsandthecor-respondingworkshopandoperationsafetyinstructionsaretobeobserved.

•Disconnectthevehiclebatterybeforestartinganykindofwork.

•Beforeworkingontheheater,switchtheheateroffandletallhotcomponentscooldown.

•Theheatermustnotbeoperatedinenclosedrooms,e.g.inthegarageormulti-storeycarpark.

•TheheatermustonlybeinstalledbyaJEpartnerauthorisedbythemanufactureraccordingtotheinstructionsinthismanualandpossiblyaccordingtospecialinstallationrecommendations;thesameappliestoanyrepairstobecarriedoutinthecaseorrepairsorguaranteeclaims.

•Repairsbynon-authorisedthird-partiesorwithnotoriginalsparepartsaredangerousandthereforenotallowed.Theyresultinexpiryofthetypepermitoftheheater;consequently,wheninstalledinmotorvehiclestheycancauseexpiryofthevehicleoperatinglicence.

•Thefollowingmeasuresarenotallowed:–Changestocomponentsrelevanttotheheater.–Useofthird-partycomponentsnotapprovedbyJ.EberspächerGmbH&Co.KG.

–Nonconformitiesininstallationoroperationfromthestatutoryregulations,safetyinstructionsorspecifica-tionsrelevanttosafeoperationasstatedintheinstallationinstructionsandoperatinginstructions.Thisappliesinparticulartotheelectricalwiring,fuelsupply,combustionairsystemandexhaustsystem.

•Onlyoriginalaccessoriesandoriginalsparepartsmustbeusedduringinstallationorrepairs.

•OnlythecontrolsapprovedbyEberspächermaybeusedtooperatetheheater.Theuseofothercontrolscanresultinmalfunctions.

•Beforetheheaterisinstalledagaininanothervehicle,rinsetheheaterpartscarryingwaterwithclearwater.

•Whencarryingoutelectricweldingonthevehicle,thepluspolecableatthebatteryshouldbedisconnectedandplacedatgroundtoprotectthecontroller.

Possible installation positions

Theheatershouldpreferablybeinstalledinthenormalposition,horizontalwiththeexhaustconnectiondowntothebottom.Dependingontheinstallationconditions,theheatercanalsobemountedinthepermittedswivelrange,seediagram.

Whentheheaterisoperating,theshownnormalormaximuminstallationpositionscanbevariedbriefly byupto+15°inalldirections.Suchdeviationscausedbytheinclinedpositionofthevehicledonotimpairtheheaterfunctionsinanyway.

Normal position with permitted swivel range

•Swivelrangefromthenormalpositionswivelleduptomax.85°downward–theheater‘swateroutletsocketishorizontal.Thewaterpump‘swaterinletsocketmustfacedownward.

•Partsconveyingwatermustberoutedandfastenedinsuchawaythattheyposenotemperaturerisktoman,animalsormaterialsensitivetotemperaturefromradiation/directcontact.

Operating instructions

Theheaterisoperatedbyacontrolunit.Thecontrolunitisaccompaniedbydetailedoperatinginstructionswhichyouwillreceivefromthecompanyinstallingtheheater.

Initial commissioning

Thefollowingpointsaretobecheckedbythecompanyinstallingtheheaterduringinitialcommissioning.

•Afterinstallationoftheheater,thecoolantcircuitandthewholefuelsupplysystemmustbeventedcarefully.Complywiththeinstructionsissuedbythevehiclemanufacturer.

•Openthecoolantcircuitbeforethetrialrun(setthetemperaturecontrolto“WARM”).

•Duringthetrialrunoftheheater,checkallwaterandfuelconnectionsforleaksandfirmfitting.

•Iftheheatershowsafaultduringoperation,findandeliminatethecauseofthefaultusingadiagnosisunit(ContactJEservicepartner).

Temperature drop (optional)Thecontrolstagesarereachedearlierandtheheater’scontrolactionisadjustedtothelowerheatrequirement.Itispossibletolowerthetemperaturebyconnectingaplussignaltothe12-pinconnectorB2,PINC3,ifnecessarybyintegratinganON-OFFswitch(seecircuitdiagramspage32and34).Theswitch-ontemperature(55°C)andswitch-offtem-perature(40°C)ofthecoolingwaterforswitchingonoroffthevehiclefanareloweredby10°C.

Description of functions

Switching onOnbeingswitchedon,theswitch-oncheckisdisplayedinthecontrolunit.Theheaterstarts,wherebythewaterpumpandthecombustionairblowerstartupfirst.Theglowphaseoftheglowpencilsbeginssimultane-ouslywithdistributionofthecombustionair.Themeteringpumpstartsfuelfeedsomewhatdelayed.Theglowpencilsareswitchedoffifastableflamehasformedinthecombustionchamber.

Heating modeAfterstarting,theheaterrunswith“POWER”stageuntilthewatertemperatureexceedsthe“POWER“/“HIGH”changeoverthreshold.Hydronic M8 Biodiesel / M10Then,dependingontheheatrequirement,theheaterswitchestothe“HIGH–MEDIUM–LOW–OFF”stages.Hydronic M12Then,dependingontheheatrequirement,theheaterswitchestothe“HIGH–MEDIUM1/MEDIUM2/MEDIUM3–LOW–OFF”stages.Iftheheatingrequirementinthe“LOW”stageissosmallthatthecoolingwatertemperaturereaches86°C,theheaterswitchesfrom“LOW”to“OFF”.Anafter-runofapprox.180secondsfollows.Thewaterpumpremainsactiveuntilthecontrolledstart.Ifthecoolingwaterhascooledtoapprox.72°C,theHydronicM8/M10heaterstartsin“MEDIUM”stage,theHydronicM12heaterstartsin“MEDIUM1”stage.Ifthecoolingwatertemperaturereaches55°C,theve-hiclefanswitcheson;ifthetemperaturedropsto40°C,thevehiclefanswitchesbackoffagain.

Heating mode at high altitudes – up to 3500 m asl

Thecombustionbehaviouroftheheaterchangeswithincreasingaltitude,duetothelowerairdensity.Theheaterhasanautomaticaltitudedetectiondevicewhichitusestoautomaticallycompensateforthechangeinairdensity,i.e.thecombustionratiobetweenfuelandairisadaptedtotheambientcondi-tionsbyreducingthefuelquantity.

•Theusualswitchinglimitforaltitudedetectionliesbe-tween1000masland2000maslandsolelydependsonthelocalclimaticconditions.

•ThemaximumheatingoutputoftheHydronicM10/M12in“AltitudeMode”is8.5kW.

•TheHydronicM8Biodieseldoesnothaveanaltitudedetectiondevice.Unrestrictedheatingmodeispos-sibleupto1500masl.

•Heaterssuitableforhighaltitudeshave“HKit”markedonthesideofthenameplate.

•Checktheopeningsofthecombustionairsupplyandexhaustsystemafterlongerstandstillperiods,cleanifnecessary!

Maintenance instructions

•Switchtheheaterononceamonthforabout10minutes,evenoutsidetheheatingperiod.

•Beforetheheatingperiodstarts,theheatershouldundergoatrialrun.Ifpersistentextremesmokedevel-ops,unusualburningnoisesoraclearfuelsmellcanbeperceivedorifelectric/electronicpartsheatup,theheatermustbeswitchedoffandputoutofservicebyremovingthefuse.

Inthiscase,theheatershouldnotbestartedupagainuntilithasbeencheckedbyqualifiedstaffwhohavebeentrainedonEberspächerheaters.
