Introduction

• Modelling 3D structures in 2D such as ponds and embankments is a relatively new advancement within the industry.

• They can be represented using features within InfoWorks ICM or by adding the structures directly into the DTM.

• During detailed design, there is a need to assess the modelling approach used due to the various design stipulations that commonly need to be met.

• This presentation will examine how this issue was overcome during a flood alleviation scheme in Filey

Background

• 18th July 2007, 82mm of rain fell in 90 minutes

• Significant overland flow from the surrounding arable fields

18th July 2007

• Flooded 200 properties, a school & severe erosion to the ravines

Process Issues

• Publically funded industry

• Many stakeholders are non-technical - scheme visualisation is important

• Current modelling practices bespoke and only easily understood by people with modelling experience

Conclusion

• Whilst current practices are appropriate at the initial design stage, it is not accurate enough in the detailed design stage

• Having a scheme that is incorporated within the DTM is easier to visualise for stakeholders and public and can be used for other purposes

• Current drive of using BIM, working in partnership and visual nature of modelling, seems logical that the next step is to directly add schemes into the DTM.
