PORT AUSTIN — There’s some good family fun celebrating America’s freedom planned in Port Austin.

The annual Port Austin Fourth of July parade will take place at 1 p.m. July 4. At dusk, there will be the firework display at the harbor.

The parade will begin at the old middle school parking lot and move down M-53 through down-town and end at Gallup Park. It is organized by the Village of Port Austin and Port Austin Chamber of Commerce.

“We have a lot of interesting things,” said Chamber Director Joyce Stanek. “There are nice floats, large tractors (and) Veteran’s that march.”

The Chamber expects approxi-mately 100 parade entries this year. Usually, there are anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 attendees, but with the holiday falling in the middle of the week, organiz-ers only are expecting 8,000 to 10,000. The beer tent that was scheduled to take place from 4 p.m. until midnight at the Veterans Waterfront Park Pavilion has been canceled.

CASS CITY — Organizers are dishing up some family fun for everyone!

The 34th Annual Freedom Festival is providing many activi-ties for the kids this year.

On Friday, June 29, there will be a petting zoo and pony rides in the park from noon to 9 p.m.

The Little Miss Pageant will be

at 5 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, June 30, the kid’s

will line up at 10 a.m. to be judged for the parade decoration contest. There will be cash prizes for the winners.

After the Parade, until 2:30 p.m., there will be a Book Fair and Arts at the Busy Bee’s Childcare and Preschool.

“It’s about spending quality family time,” said Co-Chair Emily Phillips.

The kid’s area will be open after the parade until 6 p.m. The kid’s area will cost $5 for an all-day wrist band or children can pay $1 per ride.

There will be inflatable rides and activities for the kids. This event is sponsored by the Cass City Chamber of Commerce and Thumb National Bank.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., there will be the AAUW kids area paint at the gazebo in the park.

The petting zoo and pony rides will continue throughout Saturday until 9 p.m.

The day will end with the Grand Fireworks display at dusk. The best viewing areas are the park and the school.

In the past, the Cass City Festival has averaged 10,000 attendees.

“It is a tradition, it brings peo-ple into the community,” Phillips said. “It is almost like one big family reunion — people come home (and) catch up with old friends.

H A R B O R B E A C H — Maritime Festival organizers are working up a splashin’ good time for everyone around.

“It began as a way for the com-munity to use our water front,” said Committee Member Al Kleinknecht.

The 12th Annual Maritime Festival will take place July 11-15.

Wednesday, July 11, kicks off the festival with a Nobel Odyssey Foundation documentary at the theater, followed by “The Pride of Michigan” ship tours at the marina.

There will be no charge for this event.

Thursday, July 12, will start the day with Legion Ladies Auxiliary Bingo at the Legion Hall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Other events to take this day include a book sale at the library and bocce ball on the beach.

On Friday, July 13, more activi-ties will start to take place. The

“Paws and Claws” Pet Show and Parade will be at 6 p.m. on the Murphy Lawn, followed by music on the beach.

Saturday, July 14, there will be a frog jumping contest, beach tug-o-war, sandtastic sculpting and more.

On Sunday, July 15, there will be two musical performances. Hillicane and The Following wor-ship bands will be playing in the entertainment tent from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Dur ing the 12 th Annua l Maritime Festival, there also will be a soggy bottom boat race, which is similar to the cardboard boat races held during the Caseville Cheeseburger Festival.

This gives boat builders a chance to test out their design and test it before the big race in Caseville in mid-August.

The festival is very family-ori-entated, with events for all ages.

“It is a good reason to invite people back to Harbor Beach,” Kleinknecht said.

PIGEON — It’s free fun for the whole family, while honoring local farmers.

The 39th Annual Farmer’s Festival is set to take place July 17-22, with this year’s theme being “This is How we Roll.”

“It is about celebrating farmers and what they do for our communi-ty,” said Chair Person Esther Hill.

Most of the activities will begin Thursday, July 19, with the kick-off of the garage sale weekend at 8 a.m. There also will be sidewalk sales downtown and a used book sale and quilt show at the Pigeon District Library.

On Friday, July 20, the Farmer’s Market will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Art Show will begin at the Scheurer Professional Center and be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other activities on Friday will include food vendors, the Depot Museum and Horse Drawn Wagon Rides.

“It is a free festival, so you don’t have to pay anything to enjoy the activities,” Hill said. “It is nice for them to come out and see what our

town has to offer.”Saturday, July 21, will start out

with the Kid’s Parade at 9 a.m. Kids will receive free popsicles after the parade, which ends at Recreation park. The Grand Parade will be at 11:30 a.m., which is dif-ferent from previous years.

Other kids events to take place that Saturday will be kids games, a treasure hunt, inflatable activities and more.

The night will end with the firework display at dusk, followed

by music in the Entertainment tent until 1 a.m.

The festival will end Sunday, July 22, with a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall; Mud Volleyball from noon to 6

p.m. at Recreation Park; as well as a softball tournament and lawn mower races.

“Come on out and enjoy the festival with us,” Hill said.

PORT AUSTIN — “We’re collecting things that tell the story of the area and the people,” said Martha Thuemmel of the Port Austin Area Historical Society.

The historical items can be found on display at the new History Center, which has opened its doors to the public for the first time at its new location on Pte. Aux Barques Road.

The History Center building, which originally included a sec-ond story, was built in 1908 by the Knights of the Maccabees organization near the stop light in Port Austin.

In 1972, the second story was removed from the building and eventually became the Port Austin Civic Center, which was gifted to the historical society in 2004 and later moved to 10 acres of land leased to the society by the Port Austin Area Sewer and Water Authority.

The building, which has been

painstakingly restored to showcase the original hardwood ceilings and splendid maple floors, has been remodeled to include updated restrooms, a sound system, storage areas and an office.

Olivet College interns Anthony Giordano, a History student, and Helen Macqueen an anthropol-ogy and sociology student, will be earning college credit for their work at the center until late July.

Macqueen, originally from Hastings, said this is her first time visiting the area.

“I am most looking forward to meeting new people,” Macqueen said. “I would also like to see as much of the area as possible.”

Thuemmel said the center will benefit greatly from the opportu-nity to have the two interns this year because the History Center relies solely upon volunteers and community donations.

“Having the interns here will allow us to be open on a regular schedule and, in return, we hope to meet their expectations and benefit their education,” Thuemmel said.

Thuemmel also said the interns will be doing much more than manning the information desk; they also will create displays which provide information about

significant historical events, such as the Great Fire of 1881.

The center is accepting donated artifacts and items of historical value from the areas between Oak Beach and Huron City and south to Kinde.

In addition to area historical items, the center is seeking old photos of the History Center build-ing, photos of events held in the building and volunteers who wish to help with the repairs and restora-tion of donated items.

Thuemmel said the center has two unique collections which can-not be found anywhere else.

“We have been given exclu-sive rights to the Robert LaBelle cemetery book collection, and the Genevieve Parks newspaper col-lection, which contains 33 boxes of newspaper clippings about the Port Austin and Grindstone City areas from 1959 through 2011,”

Thuemmel said. The society has several activi-

ties planned, including a Summer Concert featuring classical guitar-ist William Russell on July 7 at the Port Austin Community Playhouse and a series of Author’s Nights on Fridays starting in July, which feature several authors from the area.

Future events include an old-fashioned bingo party, a fundraiser at the Pasta House in Kinde and a grand opening celebration in September.

The History Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m during the summer. It is located 1.5 mile east of the Port Austin stop light at 1424 Pte. Aux Barques Road.

CASEVILLE — Come take a trip down “Penny Lane.”

“I think it is going to be fun for the entire Thumb,” said Chamber President Steve Louwers.

The Caseville Chamber is bringing in The Beat Club for an evening of fun. On Saturday, July 14, The Beat Club will be perform-ing at the Wooded Island.

“I came up with the idea last year,” Louwers said. “Some folks walked in and asked what was going on in Caseville tonight, sadly there was nothing.”

The Ribstock Festival takes place in June and Cheeseburger Festival takes place in August, which hasn’t left July open with many entertainment options. That changes this year, with a perfor-mance by the Beat Club, a Beatles Tribute band.

“Everyone loves The Beatles,” Louwers said.

The Beat Club has performed all over Michigan. They look like The Beatles, dress like The Beatles and sound like The Beatles. For more information, visit The Beat Club go to www.beat-club.com.

Tickets for this event are $7

in advance or $10 at the door. Organizers are hoping to have between 1,000 and 2,000 people in attendance. The first 100 Beatles fans will receive a free pair of John Lennon style sun glasses. The gate will open at 6 p.m. with the music starting at 7 p.m. Organizers are encouraging fans to dress up like the Beatles and the 60’s decade.

On Sunday, July 15, there will be a Beatles on the Bay Triathlon and Duathlon. This will be the first to be held in the Michigan Thumb Area.

The bike course will trace the waterline out and back with smooth conditions for a fast race day. The swim will take place in Lake Huron, with athletes completing a triangular course. Athletes will bike 20 km to the turnaround and the sprint, and duathlon athletes will bike 10 km to their turnaround. The run will take place parallel to the bike course, which is 5 km to the turnaround with the sprint and duathlon athletes running 2.5 km to the turnaround.

There will be awards for the overall fastest male and female in the Olympic Distance Triathlon, overall fastest male and female in the Sprint Distance Triathlon, and overall fastest male and female in

the sprint duathlon. Individual entry fee is $80 and

group entry fee is $160. Start time

is 8 a.m. at the Caseville County Park.

PIGEON — Here’s a good ol’ time for the whole family.

Thursday, June 21, started the 2012 summer at the Pigeon Band Shell. That night featured the Rob Mills Family, who took the stage for a night of gospel music and entertainment. Rob and Angie Mills and their children, Levi, Jacob and Emily, have served as music ministers in their local church for the past 15 years. The ministry is growing as they per-form for other churches, camp meetings and concert venues.

“We try to have one (act) that is gospel because we have so many people in the area that attend churches and show interest,” said Chair Neal Eichler.

On Thursday, June 28, singers from the Blue Water Ramblers took turns harmonizing to cre-ate the Rambler tapestry sound. They sing folk music and most of their musical creations come from Michigan life experiences as well as the history of the Great Lakes region.

“We feel that we get top notch artists,” Eichler said. “We do a nice variety of interests (and) it’s just something additional to do in the summer.”

Upcoming events will be Creole Du Nord July 5, Ryan & Friends July 26, and the Sonas Aug. 9.

Creole Du Nord’s sound can be traced to southwest Louisiana’s traditional music mixed with some crossover tunes as in “Cluck Old

Hen” or “Rueben’s Train.” The band performs Zydeco, Cajun and other traditional music that sug-gests sounds rooted in pre-mass media Americana, according to online promotional information.

“On accordion, fiddle, banjo, electric guitar, bass and banjo uke, they mix things up between dif-ferent forms of Old Time & Cajun music and most of it is dance, dance, dance,” promotional information states. “This music usually keeps uneasy company with slicker stuff. It’s what the band refers to as ‘..down home sound for sawing or two-step-pin’ on a sawdust floor ..that’s what we’re really talking about.’”

Ryan & Friends is an act by a popular U.S. comedian who works with puppets. Ryan receives more than 500 performance invitations and accepts only 130 of these annually, according to promotional information.

“Whether it’s his laugh-crazed family show or his dynamic corpo-rate gigs, there are two things his audiences have come to expect: a clean show and sidesplitting comedy,” promotional information

states. “Ryan graduated from the Maher School of Ventriloquism in Colorado and is a member of the North American Association of Ventriloquists where he gets to hang out with other cool guys who play with dolls.”

The Sonas are a local group which was first organized in 2002 when its members put together a few tunes for a small Celtic party.

“It was so much fun they decid-ed to make it a permanent thing. They chose the name ‘Sonas,’ a Gaelic word, that loosely trans-lated means happy or content that is how the group feels when they play” according to promotional information. “They are fun and lively and their unique sound earns them the approval of audiences wherever they play.”

All three members — Dee Dee Tibbits of Caro, Bruce Macartney of the Midland area and Tom Krause of Caro — sing when the mood calls for it and together, they create a wide variety of music for an enjoyable experience

DECKERVILLE — Families will gather here for a weekend of fun.

The annual Deckervi l le Homecoming festivities are schedule to take place Aug. 3-5. This year the theme is “Decades of Dedication.” Every year, the festival focuses on honoring Deckerville and the community.

“It is something that is tra-ditional,” said Organizer Kerry Regentin. “They have had it for a long time, (and) it is something they always did in celebration of Deckerville.”

Each year, the Deckerville

Homecoming Committee tries to add new events to switch it up a little bit. They also add new vendors and new types of adver-tising. By having new people involved in the committee each year, it also helps out with mak-ing things new and fresh each year.

On Fr iday, Aug . 3 , the Deckerville Parent Teachers Organization concessions stand and mini-carnival will be set up at the school prior to the fire-works, which will take place at dusk. The rain date set for Saturday, Aug. 4.

Saturday, Aug. 4, will start out with the 3-on-3 basketball tournament at 8 a.m. at Wilson

Park. There also will be a three point shoot out contest as well as free throw contest after the parade.

The Grand Parade, which is sponsored by Deckerville League of Women, will begin at noon. The rain date for the parade is 1 p.m. Aug. 5.

Some of the most popular activities are the free kids events all day on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Wilson Park with inflatable activities, a clown and more. The kids events will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be a live band, JBS, at Wilson Park from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. to finish off the night. In the evening, the refreshment tent

will be for adults 21 years and older, with a $2 cover charge.

On Sunday, Aug. 5, there wil l be a co-ed sof tbal l tournament held at Sanilac Sportsmen’s Club, with a chicken barbecue starting at noon. This is an all day event which should prove fun for the entire family.

“It is nice for families to get out for the day,” Regentin said. “(And) it is relatively affordable.”

CASS CITY — It’s a way to celebrate Independence Day with family and friends.

Thursday, June 28, marks the beginning of the 34th annual Freedom Festival. While most activities will take place Friday and Saturday of the weekend, there will be a golf tournament held at Rolling Hills Golf Course, with check in at 12 p.m.

On Friday, June 29, the craft show in the park will begin at noon and remain open until 9 p.m. During this time, there also will be a petting zoo, pony rides and free swimming at the Cass City Pool.

“It is a family event,” said Co-Chair Emily Phillips. “It is impor-tant to recognize the 4th of July and our Independence Day.”

There will be a Beauty Pageant that will take place at 4 p.m. at the Gazebo in the Park. This event has 10 different age categories, ranging from babies to senior citi-zens. The entry fee is $5 and late registration will take place one hour prior to the event. The contest will start at 5 p.m. The winners will receive a trophy and crown. First places winners will ride in the Freedom Festival Parade on Saturday morning.

Also on Friday, there will be a classic car show at McDonald’s at 6 p.m. At 9:30 p.m., Mulligan’s Golf Course will be holding moon-light golf. Space is limited and pre-purchase is requested. Call 989-872-8002 for more informa-tion.

The Great Parade will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 30. Many events will follow, including musical performances, the craft show, food vendors and more. Saturday afternoon also will feature the tractor pull, which will be followed by a fireworks display at dusk. This year, the fireworks are sponsored by Erla Foods.

Inflatable activities will be available after the parade until 6 p.m. A $5 wristband is offered for the day or children have to pay $1 per ride.

After the parade, until 4 p.m., there will be an airplane and heli-copter display and demo as well as

a free youth bike giveaway. This will take place at the softball field in the park.

From 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., there will be the MT Pocket Pullers trac-tor pull just north of the park. At 7 p.m., there will be an All Star High School football game at the Cass City School football field.

On Sunday, July 1, the festival will end with a church service at the Gazebo at 10 a.m. The service will be provided by the Evangelical Free Church of Cass City.

The Freedom Festival is a fam-ily-oriented event. In the past, the festival averaged about 10,000 attendees.

“We could not do it without the help and support of the local busi-ness and citizens,” Phillips said.

BAY PORT — Organizers are promising a little something for everyone.

The 35th Annual Bay Port Fish Sandwich Festival is scheduled to take place Aug. 3 and 4 at B.C. McLeish Memorial Park.

“It is geared for families for (ages) 0 to 100 (years old), we have a lot of things for everyone,” said Chamber President Nancy Gunden. “The elderly can sit and watch entertainment while the kids are at the petting zoo and pony rides.”

On Friday, Aug. 3, the festival will start off with the arts and crafts show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sandwiches will be served from noon to 8 p.m.

The royalty crowning will take place at 7 p.m.

At 7 p.m., there will be a silent auction for the Bay Port Historical Society which will end at 8:15 p.m. Firemen’s bingo also will take place both days.

Fireworks will be at dusk on that Friday evening. The rain date is set for Saturday, Aug. 4.

On Saturday, Aug. 4, there will be a 5K walk/run at 7:30 a.m. The arts and crafts show will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with sandwiches being served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The grand parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. to start off the day of events.

At noon, there will be a bake sale at the Community of Christ Church as well as the Methodist Church. Ice cream sundaes will be available from noon to 6 p.m. at the Methodist Church as well. Other events to take place during the festival include an inflatable play

area, musical performances, magic show, lawn mower races and more.

“It is just really family orien-tated,” Gunden said. “We do not have a beer tent, there is something for everyone, and all stuff is in one area which is a big draw.”

Over the two-day festival, there

usually is about 10,000 people who come through, and an average of 5,000 sandwiches are sold.

In addition to the fish sand-wiches, there also will be fries, hot dogs and nachos, which were a big hit in the past.

They are natural areas in need of protection and management for the ecologi-cal benefits they provide to people and the environment. They are open to the public for enjoyment, recreation and education.

Sanilac Petroglyphs is located near Cass City, take M-53 to Bay City Forestville Road, proceed east to Germania Road and turn south. Travel a half mile to the parking lot located on the west side of Germania Road Admission is free. (800) 35-THUMB. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. Please allow two hours to tour the Petroglyphs. Attractions

include a mile long, self guided walking trail featuring peaceful forests, the nineteenth century logging camp and a 110 year old white pine. The site is partially accessible to the handicapped.

Sleeper State Park, 6573 State Park Road, 989-856-4411. Located 5 miles west of Caseville, this park has more than 4 miles of main-tained trails available to those who wish to hike or ski. These trails pass through a variety of habitats, and are directly accessible from the campground. Trails are groomed in the winter if there is sufficient snow. Those using the trails also have access to 2,200 acres of the Rush Lake State Game Area, an area of forests and wetlands popu-lated by many types of wildlife.

CASEVILLE — Festival orga-nizers are gearing up for another year of great food and family fun.

“The job of the chamber is to promote business and bring peo-ple to Caseville,” said Chamber President Steve Louwers. “The chamber puts on these festivals to bring people to the area.”

Cheeseburger in Caseville is a 10-day festival with many activi-ties including musical entertain-ment, kid’s events and, of course, cheeseburgers.

The Parade of Tropical Fools is the No. 1 event during the festival. It will be held Aug. 15.

Many bands will be returning to the festival this year, includ-ing the Don Middlebrook, Jimmy and the Parrots, Matt Wahl, Air Margaritaville and more. A new band that will be performing this

year is Johnie Russler and the Beach Bum Band from Chicago, Ill.

There will be an amateur

and professional photo contest throughout the festival. Entries must be submitted to the chamber by noon Aug. 30, and winners being announced Sept. 3.

The festival will end Sunday, Aug. 19, with the Beautiful Baby Contest winners as well as the Best Caribbean Dressed Baby Contest at the Memorial Park located across from Keepsakes.

An estimated 1.4 million peo-ple attend the Cheeseburger in Caseville Festival throughout the 10 days. Buttons will be available and are $10. They are good for the entire festival, and get attendees into all events, including the enter-tainment at the amphitheater.

“It is unique (because) it has become one of the largest festivals in Michigan,” Louwers said. “It’s

a different type of music, it’s a different type of festival (and it’s) very relaxed and laid back — (a) very American-type festival.”

Bad Axe• The Allen House is located

at 303 N. Port Crescent St. in Bad Axe. This 1902 Dutch colonial home was built by Wallace E. Allen, the longest serving mayor of Bad Axe, and opened to the public for the first time in 2004.

Many of the home’s features are original and it is furnished with antiques throughout. The museum also has a 1950s exhibit room and a gift shop featuring hand-made items. It is open Memorial Day until Labor Day weekend. It is open by appointment. There is no admission fee. Call 989-550-2733.

• The Pioneer Log Village in Bad Axe City Park is open during the summer. The cabins include a pioneer home, school, blacksmith shop, chapel, general store and barn.

This is the largest collection of authentically restored pioneer log cabins in Michigan. Each building contains artifacts of local history. The log chapel features an 1882 pump organ. The cabins are open to the public free of charge from 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays Memorial Day through Labor Day and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the last Sunday in June for Log Cabin Day. Visitors also may view the log cabins by appointment. Call 989-550-2733.

Bay Port • The Bay Port Museum will be

housed in a portion of the old Bay Port School and it is currently in the process of being converted. It is located on Spruce St. Call 989-656-7141 for updated information.

Caseville• The Historical Society of

Caseville is located in Maccabees Hall, 6733 Prospect in downtown Caseville. Maccabees Hall is a historical landmark and home of the Historical Society. The hall was built in the late 1800s.

It contains history of Caseville and Huron County with more than 300 history books and interesting exhibits. Tours available upon request. Open from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday year around. Admission is free. Call 989-856-9090 or visit www.thehchs.org/caseville.

Elkton• Log Cabin Museum and

Blacksmith Barn is open from 1 to 5 p.m. the last Sunday in June for the annual Log Cabin Day in Michigan. It’s also open during the Elkton AutumnFest, Labor Day weekend, 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. There is no admission fee. Harbor Beach• The Frank Murphy Museum

offers a view of the birthplace and law office of Frank Murphy, Michigan governor from 1937-38. Frank Murphy held roughly eight public offices.

The museum is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it’s closed on Mondays. The museum also is open by appointment.

There is an admission charge of $2 for adults or $5 for a family.

• The Grice House Museum, featuring the old prism light from the Harbor Beach lighthouse and antique appliances and tools, is located just north of Harbor Beach along M-25. There are three build-ings to explore: the late 1800s farm-house with special exhibits, a barn and a rural school.

Built in 1874, Grice House sur-vived the fire of 1881 and is one of the oldest homes in the city. Three rooms in the home are furnished with items from the late 19th cen-tury and early 20th century. There are more than 2,000 artifacts in the complex, which also exhibits agricultural machinery and farm implements.

Grice House is open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The museum is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Admission is $2. Children under 12 are admitted free if accompanied by parents. Call 989-428-4327 for more infor-mation.

• White Rock School Museum was built in 1909 and closed in 1968. The original decor has been maintained with authentic maps and other period relics. It is located 10 miles south of Harbor Beach on M-25, then 1/2 mile west on White Rock Road. Free admission by appointment. Call 989-864-3817.

Huron City• The Huron City Museums,

located about eight miles east of Port Austin on M-25, offer visitors a chance to step back into the 19th century. The museum is a restored lumber town.

Visitors can view the town church, a log cabin, the general store, the village inn, the Pointe Aux Barques Life Saving Station and two barns furnished with antique equipment.

The House of Seven Gables, a 16-room Victorian home construct-ed in 1883 by Landgon Hubbard, is also open to the public. The muse-ums are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday in July and August. Call 989-428-4123 or visit www.HuronCityMuseums.com.

Pigeon• Pigeon Historical Museum is

located in the old Grand Trunk-Chesapeake and Ohio train depot in the middle of the village and has been named a historical site. It contains local memorabilia and artifacts. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Memorial Day through Labor Day. For more information, call the museum at 989-453-3242 or 989-453-2214.

Pointe Aux Barques• Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse

Museum is located in Lighthouse County Park, about six miles north of Port Hope off M-25. The former keeper’s dwelling at the base of the light tower has been transformed into a museum for the lighthouse and the Thumb Underwater Bottomland Preserve.

It contains a number of interest-ing exhibits of shipwreck artifacts, lighthouse equipment and historic documents. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day from Memorial Day through the last weekend in September. Donations are accepted and souvenirs are avail-able. Sebewaing• Luckhard Museum, located

at 590 E. Bay St., was a mission built for teaching the Gospel to American Indians in 1845. The museum is open the first Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. June through September or by appoint-ment by calling 989-883-2539. It is also open at various times during Sebewaing’s Sugar Festival.

• Charles W. Liken House, 325 N. Center St. in Sebewaing, and Old Sebewaing Township Hall, 29 S. Center St., are open from 1 to 3 p.m. the first Saturday and Sunday of each month, June through September.

Ubly• Ten Cent Horse Barn Museum

Charity Island Lighthouse was established in 1857, and cur-rently is privately owned. It stands in ruins at the northwest tip of Big Charity Island. It is conical in shape and constructed out of brick and wood. Visit www.charityis-land.net for more information.

The Harbor Beach Lighthouse is located at the end of the north breakwater entrance to the harbor of refuge, created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, protecting the harbor of Harbor Beach. It is auto-mated, and according to the Harbor

Beach Chamber of Commerce, it has a rotating white light with 20,000 candlepower with a vis-ibility of 21 miles. The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society has been working with city officials to preserve the historic landmark since the federal govern-ment decided to release it under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000.

Pointe Aux BarquesLighthouse is located 6 miles

north of Port Hope off M-25 on Lighthouse Road in Lighthouse

County Park. The Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse Society has been instrumental in lighthouse maintenance and upgrades, as well as establishing events such as Heritage Days. Visitors to the Lighthouse Museum can examine shipwrecks, old photos and a vari-ety of antique items. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day from Memorial Day weekend to the last weekend in September. There is a gift shop, as well. In 1849 the keeper’s dwelling burned to the ground. Port Austin Reef Light is located in Lake Huron, 2.5 miles north of the Village of Port Austin. Construction was completed in 1878, and the U.S. Coast Guard decommissioned the light in 1984. The non-profit Port Austin Reef Light Association was established in 1988 for the process of restoring the light and obtaining a long-term property lease from the U.S. Coast Guard.
