Coloma Elementary celebrates 2013 PromiseAward and 1963 time capsule opening

The audience was anything but “hushed” as they gathered in the Coloma Elementary School (CES) auditorium on Oct. 25. Excite-ment and anticipation of something extraordi-nary about to happen was in the air that afternoon. Students gathered in their class groups on the audi-torium floor. Over a hundred Coloma area residents, guests, and alumni filled every chair, ready to cel-ebrate two very memo-rable events. Coloma Elemen-tary Principal Jennifer Johnson welcomed ev-eryone and explained that the first order of business was a celebra-tion of achievement for Coloma Elementary School. “For the ninth consecutive year our school has received the “New Wisconsin Schools of Promise Award,” she said. Cheers and applause met that announcement. The cel-ebration was in recognition of the hard work and dedication of students, parents, and staff that made achieving the award a reality once again. The New Wisconsin Schools of Promise Award is given in recognition of Title I High-Progress and High-Achieving Schools in Wis-consin. These award-winning schools serve as a model for all schools across the state. Along with the award, State Superintendent of Schools Tony Evers in Madison had presented a handsome plaque in the shape of the State of Wisconsin and a monetary award of $500 earlier in the month to Coloma Elementary School representatives. After congratulatory remarks and words of wisdom by Brian Janke, School District of Westfield Board President (and former Coloma Grade School student), and Waushara County Sheriff Dave Peter-son, the fun began. Colorful balloons to be launched outside contained notes, like mes-sages in a bottle, about Coloma El-ementary School. It was hoped that whoever found the airborne messages would write back to tell how far they had traveled. Back in the auditorium, the second and most suspenseful event of the day was about to take place. Buried in the Co-loma Elementary School’s corner-stone, laid 50 years ago, a time capsule was to be opened. The day the new school ad-dition was dedicated, general contractor John Bushman and members of the school board, Arthur Dee and William Jacobs Jr., and Francis Kohn, superintendent of the Westfield Inte-grated School District, were on hand for the festivities. Now, 50 years later, the heavy cor-nerstone with the time capsule inside had been removed from the building by custodial staff from the district: Reb Meinke, Jim Groskreutz,

and Don Schrank, current CES Custodian. Center stage for the main event, honored guests Anita Payne, former 5th and 6th grade teacher, and Rita Runnels, longtime Coloma

resident and former librar-ian, were right up front. Principal Jennifer Johnson introduced them and re-marked, “We hope to find some pictures or other interesting things from 1963 inside.” Cheryl Flyte, retired teacher, set the scene for the children in the audience with stories about what life was like for students 50 years ago. “School was held from 9 to 4 every school day. For farm families on small farms, chores came first! Noon recess was long so we had lots of time to do things outside,” she said. “We’d strap on ice skates in winter, or play Red Rover, Drop-

the-Handkerchief, or do some high-flying on the teeter-totters,” Flyte remembered. “A lot has happened in the last 50 years,” she con-tinued. “The space race began and we were first to put a man on the moon, the civil rights movement started, and President John F. Ken-nedy became the fourth president of the United States to be assassinated.” A hush fell over the audience and then it was time; the moment had finally arrived to remove the capsule and view the items pre-served since 1963. From the depths of the cornerstone, Flyte slowly lifted a 10x14x4-inch sealed cop-per container up and out. Opening the lid, she carefully removed the items within. The first item was a folded, slightly yellowing copy of the Oshkosh Northwestern, dated Nov. 18, 1963. Inside the newspaper, an article described

the dedication of the school addition. Official documents on Westfield School District letterhead came out next, listing the names of nine Coloma Grade School faculty mem-bers, three school support staff, all 122 students, and names of all the contractors involved in the first and second addition to the school. There was also a guest list on lined theme paper with signatures of over 144 people who attended the dedication ceremony. Among the papers, perhaps as an afterthought before sealing up the capsule for 50 years, the general contractor, John Bushman, added a small hand written signed note on a scrap of paper. The note said simply, “President Kennedy was assassi-nated Nov. 22, 1963.” Several weeks before, Jennifer Johnson and two former Coloma Grade School students got together to talk about and help plan the

upcoming event. Cheryl Flyte had been in 7th grade at the time and Mark Kerschner in 6th grade. It seemed like yesterday for the two schoolmates who frequently said, ‘Do you re-member…?’ Favorite teacher stories and grade school escapades were related with obvious affection. “Do you remember when Elmer Payne played Santa Claus?” Kerschner said. “I had Mrs. Payne as my teacher from fourth through

seventh grade and she even was my Sunday school teacher!” he said. “To this day, I still call her ‘Mrs. Payne,’ even though she said I should call her ‘Anita’ a long time ago.” Another teacher, Peg Verthein, ranked high on Kerschner’s list in those days. “I learned so much from those two teachers, not that the oth-ers weren’t good, but they were most impor-tant to me,” Kerschner said. The conversation took a more serious turn when they both recalled that terrible day Presi-dent Kennedy was assassinated. “I remember we got a phone call that President Kennedy had been shot,” Flyte said. “For the rest of the day we listened to the radio and some people cried.” “What we ended up doing that whole day was sit and listen to the radio in Mrs. Payne’s class,” Kerschner said. “The reaction of the kids? I guess we didn’t really realize what hap-pened but we knew this was real. We were all stunned,” he said. Like any small community, Coloma area families are the ‘glue’ that keeps tradition and institutions vibrant for generations. This is especially true of the Coloma Grade School. “My grandpa Bob (Buchholz) was the custodian and school bus driver back in 1963,” said Johnson. An aunt and uncle had attended the school and Johnson’s mother, Annabelle Fenske, also taught at the school when Johnson was a student. Flyte taught at Coloma Grade School from 1989 until her retirement in 2012. All three of her children and now her grandchildren

attended or are currently attending the school as well. Kerschner’s five children at-tended and his granddaugh-ter, Chloe, is carrying on the tradition. Back at the festivities after opening the time cap-sule, members of the audi-ence mingled and shared memories of happier times at Coloma Grade School with each other. “I taught here the whole time I was teaching,” said Anita Payne. “My daugh-ter, Julie, was in my class

and I think you are harder on your own child because you just expect more. Julie says she could never come home with any school news because ‘mom’ already knew it all,” Payne said with a smile. “I had some mighty smart kids in my classes through the years.” Sheriff Peterson had told the students in his remarks earlier in the program, “I still re-member the name of every elementary teacher I ever had through school, especially the eighth grade teacher. That’s because she was my mother!” he said. Ron Chase recalled his time as former Coloma Grade School principal from 1965 to 1983. “Coloma was an excellent community with much interest in the school and with good parents and good teachers. I liked living in Coloma – it was like a second home to me,” he said. Glenda Warzynski said, “Grandma Lola Blatchley was head cook here for many years in the old school and also in the new school after it was built.” That fine afternoon came to an end with refreshments, which are always something spe-cial for the students. Each student also came away with something special to think about as well. Pride in their accomplishments and the “Promise” of the future, certainly, but more than that; hopefully, they came away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the past, and all those students who paved the way before.

Sherriff Dave Peterson had told the students, in hisremarks earlier in the program, “I still remember the name of every elementary teacher I ever had

through school, especially the eighth grade teacher. That’s because she was my mother!” he said. GlendaWarzynski said, “Grandma Lola Blatchley was headcook here for many years in the old school and also

in the new school after it was built.”

Help feed area families this Thanksgiving It doesn’t seem like it should be time to think about Thanksgiving already, but the holiday season is quickly approaching. With these hard eco-nomic times, more families need help. To date, there are approximately 500 families in Marquette County regis-tered for monthly food distri-butions (including 30 home-bound elderly and/or handi-capped families whose food boxes are delivered) and the Care and Share Food Bank of Marquette County receives emergency referrals weekly. This year marks the 16th Annual “Adopt a Family for Thanksgiving” project. Once again, a local grocer is help-ing put together a family Thanksgiving Dinner Box (for

families to prepare) includ-ing the following items: tur-key, stuffing, potatoes, yams, Jell-O, cranberry sauce, pump-kin pie, whipped topping, rolls and margarine. USDA items and vegetables will be added from the food bank. The food boxes will be assembled and distribut-ed by volunteers from the Care and Share Food Bank, N2973 State Hwy. 22 South, Montello (across from the flea market). Distribution will on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Thursdays in November, according to residence. The opportunity to par-ticipate in this heart-warm-ing project is extended to all Marquette County churches, organizations, and individu-

als. If you would like to spon-sor a family or families, your contribution can be made out to: Care and Share Food Bank, Attn.: Thanksgiving Project, P.O. Box 405, Montello, WI 53949. The final food order was placed on Nov. 1. The Care and Share Food Bank helps families in need countywide. If you would like to refer a family or families, want more information about this project or the food bank, want to make a suggestion, would like to volunteer, or would like a tour of the food bank, please feel free to call the Marquette County Aging Unit of the Department of Human Services at 608-297-3146.

This Christmas Give Something that Means SomethingHoliday Mail for Heroes - You Can Make a Difference This year every house-hold in Waushara County and adjoining counties can make a difference by helping the Red Cross ensure that members of our Armed Forces are remem-bered this Christmas. You are encouraged to make cards, or you can send a special mes-sage in a card you purchased. In order to make cards as meaningful as possible to a wide audience, the Red Cross recommends using titles such as “Dear Service Member, Veteran, or Military Family Member,” include your heart-felt sentiments and sign all cards. Cards made by groups,

school classes, etc. should be bundled in single, large enve-lopes, excluding small enve-lopes for individual cards. Please refrain from using glitter when making cards as it can aggravate health issues of wounded recipients. The Red Cross is asking that people not enclose any items with the holiday cards. This is a great project for our county residents and be-yond and cards can be dropped off at the Waushara Argus office at W7781 State Rd. 21 & 73, Wautoma. Some of the cards will be distributed local-ly to area veterans including the residents at Veterans Home

at King. Plan now to use this as a project for 4-H, scout-ing, classrooms, civic clubs, church youth groups, and or-ganizations. It is our hope to gather 10,000 cards in Waush-ara County for Holiday Mail for Heroes. We need your help in meeting this goal. Deadline for this project is Dec. 1 so they can be pack-aged and sent to area service-men and women and veterans and military family members. For more information call 920-787-3334, email [email protected] or John Kost at 920-733-4481 or e-mail john.kost@redcross. org.

Thank You The family of Lois Walters wishes to thank the many friends who helped Lois and the family, especially during the last months of her life: the Agnesian Hospice nurses who provided special attention and the staff of Rosemore Village who lovingly cared for Lois on a daily basis; Pastor Alyson Janke of Wild Rose Presbyterian Church; Jane Erickson, Mary Williams, and Sherrie Brownlow who sang at the memorial service; those who provided the special types of floral arrangements Lois loved; the ladies of the church who provided a lovely luncheon following the service; those who sent money for memorials; and all who attended her memorial service. We also appreciate the many cards and notes sent to Lois during her final weeks and those for the family following her death. The passing of Lois signifies the end of those living in Wild Rose who came from the lineage of John Hughes, who settled in the area with his family in the 1840’s. We have a sense of “accumulated grief”, but retain hope that contact with the community may continue for those of us who are scattered in other parts of the country.

For the family,Janet & Bob Jensen, Delafield, WI

Nordic Mountain opens Friday, Nov. 15Nordic Mountain Ski Hill, Mt. Morris, began making snow on Nov. 11 and will have the Gentle Giant run open on Nov. 15. Bill Ringenoldus, Nordic Mountain General Manager, said this opening is about two weeks earlier than other years and it is the earliest they have opened. The cold nights in the teens have made for great snowmaking. Stop out and enjoy skiing - the base is approximately one foot deep and will make for good ski conditions.
