Order of the Eastern Star—Wautoma Chapter Centennial
On Saturday, Oct. 5, Masonic dignitar-ies, members, and friends from around the state will be traveling to Wautoma to join the centennial celebration of Wautoma’s Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES). The 1:30 p.m. buffet luncheon and other activi-ties will take place at the Lavern W. Hansen Masonic Center, on the corner of Scott and Park Streets in Wautoma. Wisconsin’s Worthy Grand Matron, Kristen Schoville, Cobb, WI, and Wisconsin’s Worthy Grand Patron Craig Wepprecht, Kenosha, along with various other state officers, will also participate in the celebration ceremony. Musical entertainment will be provided by Vicki Jenks, Wild Rose. The Wautoma chapter formed 100 years ago in 1913, with just 26 charter members. Several old Waushara Argus newspaper ar-ticles revealed that the first chapter officers in-stalled were: Worthy Matron-Maggie Morse, Worthy Patron-Ward B. Stilwell, Associate Matron-Maggie Weiss, Secretary-Myrtle Cutts, Treasurer-Dora Byse, Conductor-Delia Russell, Associate Conductor-Hazel Weeks, Chaplain-Mary Bridgman, Warder-Mary Cast-erline, and Sentinel-G.M. Byse. Old postcards reveal that in 1913 Wau-toma’s Main Street was a dirt/mud-covered road, with horse-and-buggies being the main mode of transportation. The Anderson & Hamre General Store carried things like 20 pounds of sugar for $1.00, White Bear Syrup for 45 cents a gal-lon, 5 gallons of kerosene for 37 cents, and a large container of Grandma’s Washing Pow-der for 15 cents. It was also the year that 5,000 women marched on Washington (Suffragettes March), de-manding the right to vote, while the first moving assem-bly line was begun by Ford Motor Co., and the first electric refrigerator was introduced to the nation. The Wautoma OES chapter meetings were held on the second floor of the building now known as Christianos Pizza in downtown Wautoma until they decided to build their own Masonic temple in 1929, just one block away. With $10,000 appropriated, they had architec-tural plans drawn up by Milwaukee architects, Davis & Tuckwell and proceeded with bids for the construction. According to the June 27, 1929 Waushara Argus, the building was “to be 32 x 70 feet, constructed of brick and tile, two stories high, with lodge rooms on the second floor.” The building committee was headed by Gad Jones, with Art Blader as building super-intendent and L.F. Mischka was awarded the painting contract. The general construction was done by hiring local day labor. Masonic dignitaries (grand officers) from the state traveled to Wautoma to participate in the building dedication on July 9, 1930. The dedication was followed by a “big banquet commencing at 5 o’clock,” which was open to the public for a charge of $1.50 per plate. The July 3, 1930 Waushara Argus reported, “the beautiful new Masonic temple is a creditable addition to Wautoma’s magnificent buildings. Situated on the southeast corner of Park and
Scott Streets, facing the new courthouse and nestling in between the trees, the new Mason-ic temple, with its beautiful architecture, commands the admiration of all who see it.” The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world, with both men and women members and is a part of Freemasonry. Worldwide, there are over 500,000 members under the General Grand Chapter. While OES is an Order composed of people with deep spiritual convictions and religious character, it is open to those of all faiths and does not take the place of religion or serve as a substitute for the religious beliefs of its mem-bers; members come from all denominations. The Order is dedicated to charity, truth, and loving kindness and is based on principles drawn from the lives of Biblical women. The members share a belief in
the existence of a Supreme Being and strive to apply the worthy lessons to their daily lives. The Wisconsin OES brochure reads: “Membership consists of Master Masons and women with specific Masonic affiliation who have good moral character, believe in a Supreme Being, are age 18 or older, and are willing to assume the obligation of the Order. Eligible relationships of a Master Mason are: wife, widow, daughter, legally adopted daughter, stepdaughter, granddaughter, daughter-in-law, mother, stepmother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, stepsister, half-sister, sister-in-law, niece, great- niece of a Master Mason or an active Job’s daughter, or Rainbow for Girls three-year member or Majority Member. The Order of the Eastern Star offers an outlet for the need to do something for others, as well as serving as a resource center and support group. Many join to make friends and enjoy the fellowship.”
The OES was founded by Dr. Rob Morris in 1850. Considered the “Poet Laureate of Masonry,” he was never satisfied that all of the good in Masonry should be limited to men. While confined to his home after an accident, he created the degrees of the Eastern Star around the lives of five Biblical women: Adah, Ruth, Esther, Martha, and from the Second Epistle of John, the Elect Lady, whom he gave the name Electa. He chose these women because each of them exempli-fies virtues that are the principles of the Order: fidelity, love, constan-cy, loyalty, and faith. In addition, he fully developed the Eastern Star Degrees in their
present initiatory form. OES is a charitable organization that sup-
ports cancer treatment and research, various Masonic charities, higher education and religious leadership scholarships, and vari-ous local charities and food banks. The Wau-toma chapter also sup-ports the Community Christmas Project, the Back-to-School Bash, the local food pantry, the Salvation Army, and other charitable benefits. In addition, members participate in the Masonic Union’s Annual Father’s Day Car Show each year; the monies earned at this successful event go back to the com-munity for community needs and to the Grand Chapter in Wiscon-sin, which supports Three Pillars Masonic Home in Dousman,
Mason Woods in Shawano, the UW Carbone Cancer Center, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Association, and several others. This year, the Wisconsin Grand Chapter is also supporting Occupaws Guide Dog Association, the 2013/14 Cancer Fund—UW School of Veterinary Medicine, and World of Youth. Wautoma OES current officers are: Worthy Matron—Mary Lou Reilly, Worthy Patron—vacant due to the recent passing of Richard Reilly, Evelyn Menke, Kevin Klinger, Joyce Klinger, Carol McAllister, Rae Can-field, Paula Ausloos, Florence Andersen, Mildred Rasmussen, David and Jackie Leistra, and Lloyd and Gena Pontow. Following each regular meeting, members enjoy educational presentations, entertainment from high school students, recognition of various holidays, re-freshments and socializing in the dining area. “We genuinely enjoy each other’s com-pany; fellowship and sharing are an important part of our organization,” said OES officer Gena Pontow in a recent interview. For more information about OES or the centennial celebration, contact Gena Pontow at 920-787-3240 or e-mail [email protected].
The current Masonic Temple, located at 203 Scott St., was constructed in1929.

AnchorBank sponsors benefit for local child Proceeds will benefit Wautoma baby’s medical expenses On Saturday, Sept. 28, AnchorBank’s Wautoma Branch (W7829 State Road 21 & 73 in Wautoma) will host a fundraiser for one-year-old Levi Hines, who was born with a rare heart defect. The event will be held at the StoneRidge Brat Barn at 975 E. Main Street in Wautoma, and the Wautoma community is invited to attend. The event will offer brat-wursts, hamburgers, hot dogs,
soda and bottled water from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. for a nominal fee. In addition, families can enjoy a bake sale, face paint-ing, a clown and the Waushara canine unit between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Hines family. Levi Hines was born with Truncus Arteriousus, a rare heart defect that kept him in the hospital for months after his birth. He has already had
one major surgery, and is expected to have several more in the future. “As a community, we can’t fix Levi’s heart defect, but we can put a dent in this family’s growing medical bills,” said AnchorBank Branch Manager Kathy Mitchell. “We hope to see a great turnout at the event.” “Our mission is to make a difference for this family,” Kathy said. “AnchorBank is
passionate about their custom-ers. We really get to know them. Our hearts went out to Levi and his family after his birth, and we wanted to get involved to help with ongoing medical costs for Levi. Any support will be a gift from your heart for Levi and will make a difference in this fam-ily’s life. Please come out and enjoy the event with us!”

Pumpkins on the Petunias is Oct. 5 in downtown Berlin Come celebrate the harvest at Berlin’s premier fall festi-val, Pumpkins on the Petunias. This year’s festival is all rolled into one giant family-oriented festival. There will be the state’s largest tractor parade, a gear-grinding tractor pull on pave-ment right downtown, carni-val rides, a downhill Soapbox race, a kid’s play area featur-ing a petting zoo, hay maze, face painting, and much more. This year will also feature a working saw mill demonstra-tion, steam tractor, free pon-toon rides on the river, pedal pull competition, and six live
bands on three different stages. Bands include “Flashback,” and “Genesee Depot,” and “Dead Horses.” Let’s not for-get about the 1,000 pounds of pumpkins dropped on a car from a crane 100 feet up, and vendors galore. Don’t forget about the “Biggest Pumpkin” contest. Take the entire family to Berlin for one of the larg-est harvest festivals in the area. Coloma Cycling Club visits Heath FarmsThe Coloma Cycling Club rode west on Sept. 21 to visit the Heath Family Farm. Bob and Heidi Heath explained about their farming operation in Coloma, where they grow everything from sod for stadiums and golf courses to flowers and vegetables. Coloma sod, grown on sand, has proven to be invaluable for stadiums and golf courses because of its excellent drainage. Bob said he came back from a trip and decided to try growing sod on sand in Coloma and it has proven profitable. Bob smiled at his daughter, Heidi, when he said he still has things “on his bucket list” he wants to try growing. Bob showed the cyclists pictures of many of the stadiums (football and baseball) where Coloma sod has been installed. Heidi proudly told the group that Heath Family Farms does the flowers outside of the Packer Stadium, which are changed seasonally. The last bicycle ride for 2013 and the club’s final potluck luncheon is Sept. 28. For information on rides for 2014, call Sue at the Coloma Hotel, 715-228-2401. Pictured outside of the Heath Farm offices are: Susan Apps (Coloma), John and Lisa Eyerly (Westfield), Steve Halvorsen (Pleasant Lake), Peggy Coffey (Westfield), Bill Borzick (Coloma), Heidi and Bob Heath (Coloma and hosts), and Florence and Rich Dittle (Wild Rose).

Feeling left out? Are you embarrassed because you hear conversations, but have trouble understanding them?
It may be you aren’t hearing as well as you should. Recent university studies have connected speech understanding problems with the early onset of Alzheimers and other maladies such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Everyone, especially those over 60 who have trouble hearing words clearly, should have an annual hearing checkup. If you experience difficulty understanding, break free to a whole new world. See and hear for yourself the amazing difference a tiny, hidden hearing device can make.
Take advantage of our FREE hearing checkup. The first 30 people who call and visit for an appointment will receive a FREE amplified cordless telephone for the hearing impaired ($59.95 retail value).
Even if you have been told that old fashioned hearing aids would not help, newly developed methods of correction may surprise you.
Please call us now to schedule your appointment!

Keuster shoots a hole-in-one at Two OaksWarren Keuster (left) shot a hole-in-one on Sept. 9 at Two Oaks North Hole 17. Keuster made the shot from 171 yards with a 3 iron. Witness to the shot was Bill Harris.
Hunting reportBrought to you by Schmitty’s Shooting Supplies The waterfowl season kicked off in the north. There have been lots of wood ducks and geese, both seen and taken. The south waterfowl season opens Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. Bow hunting is doing
pretty well, and some nice bucks were shot opening day. The mornings seem to be a little more successful than the evenings. Enjoy the outdoors and respect your fellow hunters.
