Grade Level Community Service Projects

Kindergarten: “Children’s Garden” - fall/spring flower plantings in the Huntington courtyard

Grade 1: “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” – school-wide beautification and recycling project

Grade 2: “Second Grade Ambassadors” – a project to welcome new students to the Huntington School

Grade 3: “Trim a Tree with Mittens” to benefit families in need and a spring can drive to benefit a local food pantry

Grade 4: “Everyone Has a Story” - pen pals and interviewers of local senior citizens

Grade 5: “Support Our Troops” - honors local veterans as well as collect, organize and send care packages to help support our troops overseas

Professional Development Rationale

SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol): • English Language Learners (ELLs) – 43.6% • Makes teaching subject matter concepts more comprehensible • Promotes students’ academic English language development 

QAR (Question and Answer Relationships): • Shared language focused on making higher level thinking visible• Prepares students for high-stakes testing

Math Instruction:• Needs Assessment Survey: 94% of teachers supplement the

Investigations curriculum, with 53% supplementing more than half of their lessons.

Professional Development Schedule

SIOP: Beginning with Category 2, trainings for 18 teachers during the school year using full school day in-service (utilizing Huntington staff and Bilingual/ESL department staff as instructors). In-house coverage will be required.

QAR: Dr. Julianne Andrade will provide a half day in-service for all staff on June 2, 2010. Text readings will be assigned during the summer. Follow-up discussions will be conducted during common planning time to discuss teacher implementation and to monitor student progress in the 2010-2011 school year.

Math Instruction: Grade levels will meet to create a curriculum map and to plan supplemental materials to coincide with the Investigations program on June 21 and 22, 2010, for a total of 12 hours.
