Demographic Possibilities

Hunting Park is a predominantly Latino/Hispanic neighborhood in Upper North Philadelphia. This emergent community of over 13,000 residents has an average income of $31,000 and offers a variety of retail stores, service related businesses, and a large manufacturing sector (see charts below). Centered in a residentially dense part of the city, there are about 12,000

households and 38,000 people located within a ½‐mile or 5 minute walk of the boundaries of

Hunting Park.

1 According to the US Census, Hispanic is an ethnic category, not a racial category. Therefore, Hispanic

Americans are counted in all racial categories. This is why the demographic population percentages in this chart total more than 100%.

An Emergent Community

Since 2000, the population of Hunting Park has grown at eight-times the rate of the city of Philadelphia—a total of four percent growth in Hunting Park compared to the city’s total growth of ½ percent. The large Latino population is important because the 2010 Census demonstrated that the Latino population was largely responsible for the first positive population growth in Philadelphia in decades.

Hunting Park is comprised primarily of Latino and African American families. Currently, Hispanics make up 65 percent of Hunting Park’s population, compared to 12 percent of the City of Philadelphia. The Hispanic population in Philadelphia grew 11 percentage points between 1990 and 2010. The large Hispanic population gives Hunting Park a sense of community. In fact, a recent community survey found that the number one reason people move to Hunting Park is to be close to family and friends.

Young and Growing Hunting Park’s population is young and growing. Currently, the Hunting Park population under 20 is one-and-a-half times that of the city of Philadelphia. The Hunting Park community is growing much faster than the rest of the City of Philadelphia. The population has grown at eight-times the rate of the city of Philadelphia. The demographic shifts in Hunting Park over the last twenty years mirror national shifts in population. The Hispanic community in Hunting Park is a strong, vibrant, and growing community.

Location Advantage

A Strong Commercial Corridor The 5th Street commercial corridor, which runs through Hunting Park, is the middle of a continuous 3-mile stretch of commercial activity that is the heart of the economy in North Philadelphia. This densely populated area provides the ideal location for commercial and retail businesses looking to access a fast-growing urban market.

Space Available Esperanza has small and large scale retail space available with frontage on the 5th Street commercial corridor. Based on the retail market analysis (see Business Opportunity section), we are looking to recruit hardware, clothing, and shoe retailers to the area. However, Esperanza is interested in any and all inquires. Contact Phil Dawson, [email protected] or 215-324-0746 ext. 261, if you have questions.

Free Business Support and Marketing Materials Esperanza operates a community development corporation dedicated to improving the economic climate of Hunting Park. Additionally, Esperanza employs a full-time Economic Development Manager. This person helps area businesses get access to funding, provides free marketing materials, and works to organize businesses for greater access to government resources. Hunting Park has three commercial hubs: 1) Rising Sun and Wyoming Ave, 2) Rising Sun and Wingohocking, and 3) Hunting Park Avenue. The main 5th Street commercial corridor that runs directly through the center of the community is part of a 3 mile stretch of continuous economic activity that is the backbone of the economy in North Philadelphia

Retail Gaps Opportunities exist to add businesses in the retail and supply chain gaps in Hunting Park. A supply chain analysis completed in November 2012 found that when comparing retail supply (as measured by merchant sales) with retail demand (as measured by resident purchases), retail stores for building materials, appliance, and sporting goods/hobbies have the greatest demand (see below). These stores can serve local residents as well as other local businesses. By filling these gaps, residents and businesses will have an even greater incentive to shop locally.
