More pain on the home frontBY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN

AN increase in family violence in Hume isputting a strain on support agencies’ resources, leaving children who have witnessed violencewith little support.

Victoria Police figures, released last week, show a 53 per cent rise in reported family viol-ence cases in the municipality, jumping to 923in the 12 months to June from 603 the previ-ous year.

Police refer family violence cases on to localsupport agencies after an incident has beenreported.

Police referral figures from Berry StreetFamily Violence Service’s northern regionshow that in July and August 59 referrals camefrom Broadmeadows, 84 from Craigieburnand eight from Sunbury.

Berry Street had 3660 police referrals fromseven north-west municipalities in the 12

months to July, but the agency was able tocontact only 2716 of them. Berry Street actingsenior manager Gayle Correnti said the serviceneeded more resources and funding because ofthe rise in demand.

She said the agency did not have enoughresources, such as counselling for children whohad witnessed family violence.

‘‘Of particular importance to us is the effectof the trauma family violence has on children,’’she said.

‘‘We’ve got a very small amount of resourcesfor children, less than a full-time worker.

‘‘Children can carry trauma into schools andit can affect their capacity to learn.

‘‘They can have a different idea of how tobehave in a relationship.

‘‘We’re seeing a lot of very young childrenand I think that’s quite distressing.’’

Ms Correnti said it was a concern that BerryStreet had not had any extra government

funding in the past three years. Last week,Premier Ted Baillieu announced $16 million infunding over four years to tackle family viol-ence. The funding will be spread across familyviolence and sexual assault counselling andbehaviour programs for men.

Ms Correnti said she had no idea whetherher agency would benefit from the funding.

‘‘We don’t know how it will be allocated orwho to. Our hope is it does help us meetdemand of police referrals.

‘‘Hopefully we can do more case work andmore therapeutic work, so the issue doesn’t goonto the next generation.’’

Hume’s Inspector Paul Allinson said theincreased figures of family violence showedvictims were more confident in reporting casesto police. ‘‘A new family violence unit, staffedby specialist police at Broadmeadows, will fur-ther improve our work with repeat victims andrepeat offenders to break the cycle of abuse.’’

Mother of all challenges

Keeping a tradition alive: Dorothy Bamblett, right, with Mary Wooldridge

BY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN

DOROTHY Bamblett is following inher mother’s footsteps.

The Broadmeadows resident hasbeen a foster carer for eight years, inspired by her mother Sharon, whowas also a carer.

Last week, Ms Bamblett was awar-ded the state government’s RobinClark Memorial Award in the Abori-ginal Carer of the Year category.

The awards recognise the contribu-tion of Victorians who improve thelives of vulnerable children, youngpeople and families.

Ms Bamblett, who has threechildren of her own, provides foster

care for three of her cousin’s children, aged four to nine.

The single mother, who is pregnantwith her fourth child, says the mostimportant part of her role is to makesure her children have a bright future.

‘‘I’m very proud I’m doing exactlywhat my mother and other Aboriginalelders did before me,’’ she says.

‘‘I love it and I wouldn’t change itfor the world. If I can show them abetter lifestyle than most Aboriginalpeople have then that’s great.’’

Ms Bamblett was nominated for theaward by a caseworker at the Vic-torian Aboriginal Child Care Agency.

She says the biggest challenge shefaces is making sure all the children get

equal attention. ‘‘The challenge iskeeping up with their individual needsand having a one-on-one relationshipwith them.

‘‘It does get very busy, especially inthe morning with school, kinder anddaycare drop-offs. But I have a verysupportive family who help me.’’

Community Services Minister MaryWooldridge presented the awards at aceremony last week. ‘‘To be awarded a‘Robin Clark’ means the recipient hasdone a great service for vulnerablechildren in Victoria. We are saying‘thank you’ and celebrating some ofthe most dedicated, hardworking andselfless people in our community,’’ MsWooldridge said.

The tooth fairy, who is also a registerednurse, visited the school as part of a free initi-ative of Smile Solutions, Australia’s largestdental practice.

She gave a presentation to the pupils abouthow to care for their teeth and gums. Eachpupil got a gift bag filled with items toencourage oral hygiene.

Grade prep and 1 teacher Karen Meddingssaid it had a great impact on the pupils.

‘‘It was fantastic, they learnt about ‘happyfoods’ for their teeth like yoghurt and bana-nas and ‘sad food’ like chocolate, lollies andchips.’’ The visit stemmed from a 2011 ChildDental Health survey by the federal govern-ment that showed almost half of Australianchildren aged five and six have one or morecavities in their milk teeth, while one in 10have more than seven.

Teachers pencil in another strikeBY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN

Warning: Paula Gaughan, Krystina Simpson and Jodie Goughlan talk about anotherstrike. Picture: Marco De Luca

TEACHERS from BroadmeadowsValley Primary School will again goon strike next term to follow up on astate protest rally at Rod Laver Arenalast week.

Twenty-one teachers from theschool went on strike on Wednesdayand most attended the rally that drewabout 15,000 teachers fromVictorian schools.

The school was one of three inHume that was closed on Wednesday.

The strike was led by the Austra-lian Education Union in protestagainst the state government’s refusalto budge from its offer of a 2.5 percent annual pay increase.

The union is seeking a 30 per centpay rise over three years, a 50 percent reduction in the number of

teachers on short-term contracts andmaximum class sizes of 20.

Principal Andrew Jones said theschool was closed to its 250 students.

He said staff hoped negotiationswith the government wouldcontinue.

‘‘Generally it’s about returning tothe table and continue negotiationsaround wage claims and detailsspecific to employment conditions.’’

Grade 5/6 teacher and AEU sub-branch leader Paula Gaughan, whoattended the rally, said teachers hadplanned another strike early in termfour, which runs from October 8 toDecember 21.

‘‘There was no hint of any mattersbeing resolved,’’ she said.

Minister for the Teaching Profes-sion Peter Hall has labelled the strikeas a ‘‘disruption’’ to Victorian

families. ‘‘Our offer would give allteachers a pay rise of 2.5 per cent andfor the best 70 per cent of our teach-ers, a substantial bonus each year.’’

Ms Gaughan said performance-based pay would undermine teachersand create a divisive work environ-ment.

Down on the farm, a lesson in nature

Growing hopes: Mario, 10 (front), and other Holy ChildPrimary School pupils plant trees at Malmsbury.

Picture: Matthew Furneaux

PUPILS from Holy Child Primary School in Dallasstepped out onto a farm for the first time last weekto help plant 400 trees.

Grade 5 and 6 pupils helped nurture indigenousseedlings for farmer Gerard Noonan, who lives inMalmsbury, in central Victoria.

On Thursday, they travelled to Malmsbury, about 90 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, andhelped Mr Noonan plant 400 trees. They will helpcreate wind breaks, shelter belts and combat soilerosion.

It’s part of a scheme by TreeProject, a not-for-profit organisation that helps bring together ruraland urban communities and restore native vegeta-tion on farmland.

Teacher Paul Gleeson, a member of the organisa-tion for more than 12 years, sees the benefits topupils and land owners. ‘‘I bring the seedlings in sothe kids can help divide them up. They see them asthe trees are growing,’’ he said.

‘‘Many of our kids are migrants from Iraq andVietnam, so the experience of going to a farm andseeing the rural part of Australia is a special experi-ence for them too.

‘‘It’s something that’s important for them toexperience.’’

TreeProject manager De Grebner said theinitiative was a way to involve city and town peo-ple in caring for our rural environment.

Mr Noonan has been ordering plants fromTreeProject since 2003. He wants to increaseproductivity on his farm, improving water qualityand shelter. ‘‘By improving my land, young stocknow have shelter and protection from bad weather, plus more bird life has come onto the property.

‘‘The kids are able to plant 400 trees in about anhour. If it was just me, it would take a few days.’’

For youths,a hire goal

Link: Jenny Brodie helps youth. Picture: Marco De Luca

BY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN

JENNY Brodie is looking forward to playinga big role in the lives of disengaged Craigie-burn youth.

She has been employed as a youth engage-ment officer for the second phase of aprogram called JobLink 3064, which helpsfind employment and education opportunit-ies for youth aged 16-25.

JobLink is run by the Hume WhittleseaLocal Learning and Employment Network inpartnership with Hume Council and theMeadow Heights Learning Shop.

‘‘Up until now I’ve been researching whatwe can do in the area. Now we are ready tostart meeting young people,’’ says Ms Brodie, who got her first client last week.

Ms Brodie says an information session isplanned for late this month to let those aged16-19 know what their options are.

‘‘My role is to work with youth who arelooking for work, or if they’re not job ready,to work with them one-on-one to get themready. That could be in the form of trainingor going back to school.’’

Department of Education, Employmentand Workplace Relations figures last monthshowed unemployment among youths aged15-19 in Melbourne’s north-west was40.4 per cent compared with the stateaverage of 29.5 per cent.

Ms Brodie says that most of the jobsavailable in Craigieburn are in hospitalityand retail.

She says unemployed young people orearly school leavers do not always have thetools to find work.

‘‘Often when they leave school without aplan in place they stay at home or hangaround the streets with nothing to do.

‘‘We’re hoping in the next 12 monthsthere’s a lot of local stuff kids can do.’’

Making a mark withindigenous youth

Young guns: Hume Bombers Football Club members, from left, Kirk Kelly, Dyllan O’Brien, Kane Edgell andMatthew Fiaalii look to a bright future. Picture: Marco De Luca

BY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN

THE Hume Bombers Football Club is progress-ing in leaps and bounds, on the field and off.

The club for indigenous youth, formed inJanuary this year, won a grand final last month.

Now the focus is on increasing its 100-strongmembership next year.

The club is spearheaded by Craigieburn resid-ent Dyllan O’Brien, who studies informationtechnology at Kangan Institute atBroadmeadows.

Mr O’Brien set up the team, initially of 18players, for a Victorian Certificate of AppliedLearning (VCAL) project as a means to re-engagedisadvantaged local youths.

The club competes in Reclink Australia’sVictorian Football League, aimed at supportingpeople experiencing disadvantage.

Mr O’Brien, 17, says the club has given youngpeople a purpose.

Many of the club’s players had dropped out ofcourses at Kangan but have now come back tostudy.

‘‘We’ve got kids in Hume who run amockout in the streets and stuff and we thought if weget them to play footy and get students back toKangan it would lower the crime rate,’’ hesaid.

‘‘Even though they come from disadvantagedbackgrounds, it inspires me how they can rise upand get their life back on track.

‘‘We’ve got really good feedback fromeveryone who played and they’re all keen tocome back next year.’’

Some of the players also play in the EssendonDistrict Football League with Jacana FootballClub. This is why the team was dubbed the‘Bombers’.

At present the team is made up of both maleand female players aged 17-18.

About 16 Kangan students make up a coreteam and other players take part on a rotatingbasis. They train at Jacana.

Usually about 25 to 30 players attend eachmatch.

The Bombers won the grand final on August16, defeating the Sacred Heart Mission team by

96 points. The Bombers played nine matchesleading up to the grand final. Kangan’sIndigenous Education Centre teacher ArnelDavis said the club’s success was overwhelming.

‘‘The club has successfully engaged somestudents back into study at Kangan Institute,

from VCAL to childcare, building and otherprograms. We found that some of our formerstudents who had left midway through theircourse even came back to finish off what they’vestarted,’’ he said.

WOLLERT ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

UPDATE – CHANGING TRAFFIC CONDITIONSThe $4million upgrade of the intersection at Epping, Craigieburn and Lehmanns Roads at Wollert is progressing well. The road improvement works commenced in July and completion is on track for December 2012.

• Works are currently occurring along Craigieburn Road East through Epping Road and Lehmanns Road.

• Motorists are advised that these roads will remain closed and diversions should be considered using Donnybrook Rd or Cooper St.

• Both roads will remain closed when work relocates to Epping Road in mid September 2012. Epping Road will be reduced to one lane for both inbound and outbound traffi c. To minimise travel delays, commuters are encouraged to use diversion routes.

For further information about the improvement works, please contact Stockland Customer Relations on (03) 9095 5062 or refer to VicRoads’ website www.vicroads.vic.gov.au

High-flying Jets foil Marby Lions’ dreamBY TEO PELLIZZERI

GREENVALE onballer Eric Kuret producedarguably the best 90 seconds of the EssendonDistrict Football League season to buryMaribyrnong Park as the Jets won the prelimin-ary final by 47 points on Saturday.

The Lions failed to capitalise attacking to thewind-assisted end at Windy Hill in the secondquarter before Greenvale kicked away in thethird term to set up the 16.14 (110) to 9.9 (63)win.

Greenvale advances to this Saturday’s premierdivision grand final against Strathmore whileMaribyrnong Park’s season ends for the secondyear in a row with a finals defeat to the Jets.

The margin was 23 at half-time as Maribyr-nong Park set up to try and stay within striking

distance at the final change. But Kuret, a domin-ant clearance winner in the middle all afternoon, took the game by the scruff of the neck with twogoals in the third and fourth minutes of the term.

The first was roving off a pack, the second a60m roost with the wind carrying the ballthrough on the bounce.

When Sam Zumbo added a goal on the runtwo minutes later the margin was 42 and Green-vale in total control.

Maribyrnong Park kicked just a point until the27-minute mark of the quarter and its first goalof the term, to end a run of six in a row forGreenvale, pegged the margin back to 58 points.

The Lions rallied with the wind to draw backto 47 points, but never looked likely to pull off amiracle comeback after goals early in the quarterto Greenvale’s Jacob Thompson and Ricky

Fandrich. The first 20 minutes of the openingterm was close and hard fought but Greenvalebroke away to a 20-point quarter-time lead witha double strike from Zumbo and a goal to MattSmith.

Maribyrnong Park failed to capitalise attack-ing to the wind-assisted primary school end ofWindy Hill in the second quarter however.

Jackson Barling’s miss from a set shot 20m outin front was punished at the other end by goals toBen Clifton and Chris Spinella, making themargin 36 points.

Maribyrnong Park lost discipline at times, conceding a number of goals from free kicks and50m penalties.

Greenvale named Chris and Daniel Burns itsbest along with three-goal Zumbo, Kuret, JamesRohan and Matt Smith.

But the roles of hard-running Rhys Johnson, ruckman Simon Potter and key defender DanielCampisano were also significant.

Maribyrnong Park’s Trent Lee fought hard onthe ball for four quarters while Kotzur, JakeDesousa and Corey Brown were majorpossession winners.

Greenvale ruckman Cameron Wight appearedto be hampered by a thigh injury in the first halfbefore spending the majority of the second halfon the bench.

Jets coach Anthony Rock said the benchingwas precautionary and he had no concerns aboutWight’s fitness for the grand final.

Maribyrnong Park coach Brodie Holland saidinjuries to forward Luke Buttigieg and onballerGareth Bowes had hurt his team’s plans to rotateheavily through the bench.

ANTHONY ROCK — Greenvale‘‘Our mindset over the last two

weeks has been really good. They’re ahungry group.

‘‘I can’t ask any more as a coach. Now you have to get into a grand finaland try and win it. Strathmore havebeen the best team all year and rightlyso.

‘‘We had a great contest with themin (the qualifying final) and who is tosay we can’t have that again.

‘‘It’s about playing your role. Youcan look at our outs but the guys thatcome in and replace them play a roleand we value that.

‘‘Strathmore and us are both facing

off in reserves and seniors so weboth have the depth and can beconfident.

‘‘The two best teams are in. If wecome with a good mindset I’m surewe’ll be competitive.’’BRODIE HOLLAND — Maribyr-nong Park

‘‘We played a really good gameagainst Abers last week, played withMarby spirit and just didn’t havemomentum throughout the year withthe injuries.

‘‘When you hit finals you needeverything to click and have that con-tinuity in your fitness and we didn’thave that.

‘‘I don’t put what happened outthere down to necessarily not beinggood enough. They (Greenvale) had abetter year, lost only two games andwe were lucky to make (the finals).

‘‘They had a good midfield, Kuret

kept racking it up and didn’t haveanyone to go with him. We thought wecould get them with rotations throughthe midfield and (Luke) Buttigieggoing down early and (Gareth) Bowesas well meant we couldn’t use that.’’
