Council backs ‘memorial mile’BY BEN CAMERON

MOORABOOL Council has unveiled plans toextend Woolpack Road and create a‘‘memorial mile’’.

The release of the uncosted plans comesafter the state government rejected controver-sial proposals for the extension of WoolpackRoad to the Western Highway.

The tweaked design is back on the table afterMoorabool mayor Pat Griffin and chief exec-utive Rob Croxford met with the Premier TedBaillieu and cabinet in Ballarat last Tuesday.

Cr Griffin told the Weekly Mr Baillieu haddeclined to comment on the idea.

Council hopes the extension will create bothan effective truck bypass and anothermemorial for fallen soldiers.

‘‘Moorabool Shire Council is committed tofinding a bypass route that will take trucks offour main streets, including the Avenue ofHonour,’’ Cr Griffin said.

‘‘We spend about $300,000 a year in linewith our maintenance program to ensure theiconic avenue is maintained and preserved forfuture generations to enjoy, and we are greatlyconcerned that if no viable alternative to theoriginal proposition is found then truck trafficwill continue to impact on and degrade theentire length of the Avenue of Honour.

‘‘What we are now putting forward is aconcept for a memorial mile of trees that goesmuch further than the original proposal,because it will recognise service personnel whoserved in conflicts post World War I.’’

A feature of the plan is an interpretive centreon the corner of Woolpack Road and theAvenue of Honour, which was first proposed in2009.

Council intends to plant about 108additional trees along the road and create linksto existing and new walking trails.

But Avenue Preservation Group spokesmanDamien Strangio said the concept was merely areturn to a failed plan. He asked why it was notcosted. ‘‘There’s nothing new here, it’s a simplerepetition,’’ he said. ‘‘Council should not haverepeated a failed proposal, they should have

moved on. There is no costing for this plan,from a council which is under significant finan-cial scrutiny at the moment.’’

A VicRoads spokesman said it was consider-ing plans to improve access to and fromBacchus Marsh. He said major options wereupgrading the existing eastern interchangeconnecting to Bacchus Marsh Road, building anew eastern interchange and links south ofBacchus Marsh Road, and building east-facingfreeway ramps at Halletts Way.

Cr Griffin called on Mr Baillieu to criticallyreview VicRoads’ alternatives. “I’m sure thePremier will come to the conclusion that Wool-pack Road is the only viable, low-impact solu-tion to providing a north-south alternativeroute around to the east of Bacchus Marsh, toget the trucks off the avenue and out of ourtown. Not only for the health and well-beingof our community but to ensure that theAvenue of Honour is preserved for all time.’’

West Moorabool ward’s Cr Tom Sullivan last

week attended a meeting of a Municipal

Association of Victoria taskforce, which is

assessing the most effective way councils can

pay their share. The Weekly reported in July

that Moorabool had to make up the shortfall

under an old defined-benefits superannuation

scheme. Cr Sullivan said options involved

requesting a cheaper borrowing rate,

reopening the scheme, or even paying out

members.

The Weekly reported last week that another

candidate, John Spain, was pushing to have

multiple associations represent various areas.

Mrs Scarff prefers the establishment of one

umbrella association. ‘‘My preference is for

one association for all of Moorabool with

representatives from each of the towns within

the shire,’’ she said.

Teachers pencil in more strikesBY BEN CAMERON

MOORABOOL teachers have warned therecould be more strikes after joining thousands ofcolleagues who walked off the job lastWednesday.

Classes were cancelled as Ballan PrimarySchool principal Brian Reynolds, the school’sassistant principal, its eight teachers and onesupport staff member joined more than 15,000people who marched to Parliament House.

The strike was led by the Australian Educa-tion Union to protest the state government’soffer of a 2.5 per cent annual pay rise.

The union wants a 30 per cent increase overthree years, a 50 per cent reduction in thenumber of teachers on short-term contracts andmaximum class sizes of 20.

Members also oppose the introduction ofperformance-based pay.

Mr Reynolds said that while pay was not thebiggest concern for staff, the government’s offerwas well below the inflation rate.

‘‘So in real terms we are been offered a paycut,’’ he said. ‘‘We need to ensure that we areable to provide the best teaching and learningconditions to continue improving studentoutcomes and not have them eroded.’’

He said the government had to recognise thelarge amount of overtime worked by staff.

‘‘This includes time taken to plan and preparelessons; attend school events, camps and excur-sions; meet with parents and plan for individualstudent needs,’’ he said.

‘‘The time provided by school staff is veryhappily given, but this needs to be recognised.

At times this can be as high as working 60 hoursa week.’’

Mr Reynolds said more industrial actionwould follow.

‘‘At the stop-work meeting on Wednesday itwas decided that there would be rolling half-daystop-work action across the state during termfour.’’

Teaching Profession Minister Peter Halldefended the government’s proposal to rewardteachers based on individual performance.

‘‘We need a system where talented teacherswith new ideas and energy are encouraged,recognised and rewarded, not pushed into aone-size-fits-all and time served mentality.

‘‘Our offer would give all teachers a pay riseof 2.5 per cent and for the best 70 per cent ofour teachers a substantial bonus each year.’’

Truck bypass shunted to too-hard basketMOORABOOL Council fears that hopes for aBacchus Marsh truck bypass will come tonothing, despite the unveiling of plans to easetraffic congestion.

The council has been lobbying in the past fewweeks, with mayor Pat Griffin and chiefexecutive Rob Croxford meeting VicRoads onAugust 21 to discuss new strategies for the town.

‘‘What came out of that meeting is that it’s

highly unlikely there will be a truck bypass forBacchus Marsh within this current determina-tion,’’ Cr Griffin said. ‘‘They still haven’t reacheda conclusion. They’re looking at a number ofoptions and they will probably in the next weekor two report to the [Transport] Minister [TerryMulder] on what they are.’’

The council also lobbied Premier Ted Baillieuand cabinet members in Ballarat last Tuesday,

seeking a reversal of a decision to reject plans forthe extension of Woolpack Road.

‘‘We also mentioned that VicRoads had notaddressed the problem of getting trucks off ourmain street,’’ Cr Griffin said. ‘‘Without a truckbypass, trucks will continue to go down theAvenue of Honour, degrade the trees and raisethe number that need to be replaced.’’

Trader tattle boostshopes for coal mineA NEW coal mine in Bacchus Marsh wouldbe a strong investment, according to onlinecomments by traders.

The Weekly has seen online forumcomments, with an assumed trader postingthat ‘‘BM [Bacchus Marsh] is lookingawesome’’.

The trader also wrote: ‘‘[Mining partner]Exergen will be moving very quickly in thenext few months to get the demo plant built.Scoping study will be very interesting and let’shope the results are very good.’’

The Weekly reported last month that ascoping study will be completed by the end ofSeptember, at the earliest.

Exergen also plans to build a demonstra-tion plant that will test new technology forextracting water from coal, which is believedto reduce emissions by as much as 40 percent. A location is yet to be determined andExergen would not reveal a timeline for theplant’s construction.

The forum poster also commented: ‘‘Ex-ergen needed to get JORC [Joint Ore ReservesCommittee] and JV [Joint Venture Agree-ment] done so they were able to raise cash forthe demo plant as they are not only relying ongovernment funds. I assume they will be look-ing to list on the [stock exchange] soon.

‘‘We already know they have the backer,resource and skills, and soon we should have. . . [the] scoping study which should get moreinvestor interest in the project.’’

Friends of the Earth spokesman CamWalker said it was difficult to read much intothe comments without a formal announce-ment from Mantle Mining or Exergen.

He said he believed community outrage inBacchus Marsh was similar to that whichsurrounded a Mantle exploration applicationin the Otways in 2009, which was eventuallywithdrawn. ‘‘I can only see their withdrawalas the only viable outcome from all this. Theyhave to listen to the community eventually.’’

An Exergen spokesman said they wouldnot comment on the speculation. Mantle wasnot available for comment.

BALLAN Golf Club could beup and running at full capacitywithin a month, despite wild windscausing damage valued at $75,000last week.

As reported online last Wednes-day, the roof of the club’s mainbuilding landed in the car park afterbeing ripped off by gale-force windsabout 8am.

Club members managed to coverthe hole with tarpaulins but notbefore a downpour caused damageto ceilings, carpet and electricalequipment.

Club president Michael Newmanyesterday said repairs to the build-ing could be completed within fourto six weeks.

‘‘We’ll hopefully start repairs tothe roof this weekend,’’ he said. ‘‘Allthe ceilings have fallen in andthere’s a lot of damage to the carpet,the lights and all the electricalequipment.

‘‘In the meantime, we’ll run ouroperations from a rented hut, but

competition golf will continue onTuesdays, Wednesdays and Sat-urdays. We’re just going to take abit of a hit with bar sales.’’

Secretary Rod Caithness said heheard the roof blow off the club-house from his own home down thestreet. ‘‘It made an awful clatter. Itripped all the battens out and it wasa fair-sized roof.’’

Bacchus Marsh SES deputy con-troller Bill Robson said the unitattended more than 40 jobs duringa windy 48-hour period.

‘‘Mostly they were just fallentrees,’’ he said.

‘‘A few fell on houses, which hascreated some minor damage.

‘‘We also had a trampoline thatflew over the back fence of some-body’s property and hopped intoseveral backyards. It scratched afew cars, too.’’

Wind gusts of up to 81km/h wererecorded at the Sheoaks weatherstation on Wednesday night.

Attacks take toll on Tudball

IT was the darkest moment during hiseight years of service to theMoorabool community, a time whenCr Michael Tudball probablydoubted whether being a councillorwas worth the slings and arrows.

The darkness descended during adebate about the controversialBacchus Marsh Main Streetcommunity land proposals, when thefuture of the since-demolished librarywas up in the air.

Amid the backlash, Cr Tudballremained adamant the right decisionhad been made.

But it came at a personal cost.‘‘During that time it became very

personal, and while I signed up forpublic life, my family did not,’’he said.

‘‘For my 70-year-old mother at thetime to be abused by communitymembers, that was intolerable andI made that very clearly known atthe time.

‘‘It was an isolated instance but was

very distressing for my family.’’Cr Tudball, who recently

announced he won’t seek re-electionin East Moorabool ward, is not one tolook back.

‘‘I haven’t reflected on previousdecisions made and or wished toreverse or change them.

‘‘I think that over the eight years wehave made the best decisions at thattime based upon the available inform-ation and taking into account manydiverse, strong and passionatecommunity views.’’

It’s the future that Cr Tudball ismost concerned about, and he firmly

believes he’s leaving with Mooraboolbetter placed.

He said that with the state govern-ment handing back some of thedecision-making for local growth,there’d never been a better time toplan for the shire’s future.

Cr Tudball said the highlight of hisyears as a councillor was his re-election in 2008 and his time asmayor in 2008-09.

The group was presented withthe ‘Community Group Caringfor Private Land’ award at acelebration at the Melbourne Zooon Saturday.

MOORABOOL Council will investig-ate the feasibility of a permanentlibrary service in Ballan.

As part of council’s Library Stra-tegic Plan 2012-15, which was rubber-stamped last week, the council willcomplete a study into a potential‘‘static library branch’’.

A library depot operates from theBallan Mechanics Institute twice aweek on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

But a council officer stated attend-ances at the new depot had exceededexpectations. ‘‘Some days we’ve seenup to 120 people in one day, which isplacing considerable demand on thefacility,’’ a council officer said.

A mobile library service operating inthe area also services Gordon, Dunns-town, Elaine and Leigh Creek.

The strategy highlighted the coun-cil’s intention to develop a toy library

with maternal and child health ser-vices, and more effectively promotecommunity use of the library andmeeting rooms, also providing betteraccess to e-books and e-readers.

Recent research shows Mooraboolis below the state average for publicaccess to the internet and borrowingsper capita.

The library strategy, which was onexhibition from July 2-August 2, wasaccessed by 164 people via the coun-cil’s interactive website.

Resident ‘Pete’ suggested all booksbe removed from Moorabool librariesand replaced by computers ande-books.

‘‘Paper books are dead to some anddying to most of us,’’ he wrote.

‘‘In 10 years time, most of us willnot be using them.’’

Battling new ice ageBY BEN CAMERON

DESPITE concerns about the increasing use ofthe drug ‘‘ice’’, alcohol and marijuana remain themajor concerns in the outer west, according to alocal counsellor.

As reported in the Weekly, a public meeting inBacchus Marsh last month heard drug-relatedcrime in the area was increasing, with morepeople using crystal methamphetaminehydrochloride.

Melton’s Detective Sergeant Robert Henleyalso told the Weekly ice was causing significantpolicing issues.

But last week, Bacchus Marsh CommunityHealth Care drug and alcohol counsellor LeanneMiller said the increase came from a specificdemographic. ‘‘I see mostly people in their lateteens and up to age 24. Amphetamines have beenaround for a long time, but ice is becoming moreprevalent. But alcohol and marijuana are by farthe main issue.’’

Ballarat Community Health youth outreachworker Suzanne Powell said the increase in usecrossed generations.

‘‘The amount of client presentations related toice has increased recently across all age groups.It’s impossible to say why this is, but it could be

attributed to a number of factors including avail-ability and popularity.’’

Ms Powell said ice was highly addictive anddependence could develop quickly.

‘‘Unfortunately, some people who use iceregularly and at high levels can experiencesignificant physical and mental healthproblems,’’ she said.

‘‘This, however, is not uncommon for peoplewho use alcohol and other drugs regularly athigh level as well.’’

Ms Powell urged anyone with concerns aboutsubstance use to seek treatment.

‘‘A supportive and non-judgmental approachis imperative for people who are experiencingissues with substance use,’’ she said.

A parent, who asked to remain anonymous,said she had witnessed first-hand the effects icehad on families.

‘‘My girlfriend and her two kids, 19 and 21,are using it. The scary thing is that you can gethooked the first time, and it’s very cheap.’’

Bacchus Marsh police’s Sergeant Jim Ross saidice could become ‘‘rife’’ if not dealt with properly.He said police were setting up a drug and alcoholsupport group for the area.

Fine over failureto control pestA MYRNIONG company has beenfined $500 and placed on a six-monthgood behaviour bond for failing tocontrol rabbits on its property.

Company officials pleaded guilty inthe Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Courtto charges of failing to comply with aland management notice issued by theDepartment of Primary Industries.

DPI biosecurity officer NigelRoberts said the property was in anarea covered by a rabbit controlprogram. He said several landownershad been issued legal notices requiringthem to carry out compliance work.

“Landowners have a legal responsi-bility to manage pest plants andanimals on their properties toensure they don’t adversely affectagricultural production on neighbour-ing farms or impact on the naturalenvironment.

“Landowners who failed to meetthe requirements of land management

notices will be prosecuted under theCatchment and Land Protection Act.’’

The court heard while there weresome signs of rabbit control on someof the property’s entrances, therequirements of the managementnotice had not been met.

Mr Roberts said the DPI was sup-porting community action, spearhead-ed by the Pentland Hills LandcareGroup, by implementing a rabbitcontrol program in the area.

“The magistrate informed companyofficials that although the rabbit con-trol had since been completed, thecompany needed to do the workswithin the time frame set out in thelegal notice in order to support the co-ordinated efforts of other landholders.

“The Myrniong community’sresponse and efforts to control rabbitshad been impressive, but the inactionof some landholders could jeopardisethe overall success of the project.’’

Highlighting the ‘beautiful side of Africa’

A CULTURAL leader has been awar-ded for her contribution to the Africancommunity in the west.

Victoria University Ethiopianmigrant and community engagementadviser Elleni Bereded-Samuel was lastmonth named one of Australia’s 100most-influential Africans by theCelebration of African Australians.

The awards showcased the contri-bution of African Australians to thecountry’s growth and prosperity.

Ms Bereded-Samuel says she washonoured to be recognised alongsidedoctors, musicians, educators andother leaders. “It is very humbling tobe recognised for work that I lovedoing,’’ she says.

Ms Bereded-Samuel, who moved toAustralia 16 years ago, has establisheda program that encourages VU educa-tion students to complete work place-ments with African communities inBrimbank, Kensington, Flemington,Melton and Wyndham.

‘‘The aim is to help teach these

future teachers about the complexitiesof African students so they have a bet-ter understanding of how to interactwith them when they begin working inthe western suburbs.’’

In July, she launched a landmarkresearch project that will documentthe experiences of western suburbsresidents from Ethiopia. Ms Bereded-Samuel said there were about 4000Ethiopians living in Brimbank, Mari-byrnong and Wyndham and hundredsmore in Flemington.

She told the Weekly it was refresh-ing to focus on the ‘‘beautiful side ofAfrica’’.

‘‘Too often people are hearing aboutthe bad side of Africa through themedia . . . the starvation politics andbad management of the nation. Butthere are high achieving and intelligentambassadors for the Africa living inAustralia doing things to slowlychange people’s perceptions.’’

Ms Bereded-Samuel was one of 40leaders selected as a ‘People of Austra-lia’ ambassador by Prime MinisterJulia Gillard earlier this year.

HIS body was found covered in mud. His jacket was about a metre away from where he lay on sodden grass.

At 15, Leigh Clark died a most lonely death.On a Friday night in August, 13 years ago,

his parents, Melton couple Bruce and Lorraine, called police, concerned that their son hadn’t returned home.

What happened next has tormented them ever since.

“He was meeting some friends at McDonald’s, where they were due to walk to a local alcohol-free disco,” Bruce Clark recalls.

Due to bad weather, his friends didn’t turn up and Leigh met some other friends who planned to drink alcohol before the underage event.

One of the group had convinced his mother to buy imitation vodka essence a few hours prior.

Three 375ml bottles of Hoyt’s Vodka Essence, costing $5.50 each, were shared among the teenagers, the youngest aged 12.

In the coroner’s report, Leigh was said to be drinking from one of the bottles.

Some witnesses said they saw him drink the vodka essence mixed only with soft drink.

One said they saw him drink it ‘neat’. One bottle of the essence had about 70 per cent alcohol concentration.

The teenagers left the house where they had started to drink the essence and returned to McDonald’s. Leigh collapsed on a table and the group was asked to leave.

“I was told he had real trouble holding himself up. Leigh said he was feeling crook and said he would walk home,” says Clark.

It wasn’t until noon on the Sunday that Leigh was found only 300 metres from where he left the group.

“He collapsed in a muddy paddock ... I was walking the streets until 3am. He was eventually found by a couple of schoolmates taking a short cut across the paddock.’’

Aside from the trauma the Clarks faced, the coroner’s report stated Leigh died from hypothermia. The fi nding caused his family added stress.

“Experts told us they were convinced he died from alcohol poisoning, but the coroner dismissed the opinions”. Clark is adamant it was alcohol poisoning.

Leigh drank the equivalent of 22 standard drinks in half an hour, which Clark describes as “impossible”.

After his son’s death, Clark began campaigning to have the sale of 375ml vodka essence banned and for legislation to prohibit parents supplying to teenagers — that would bring Victoria in line with other states.

He succeeded on both counts. Under Victorian law, since November it has

been illegal to supply alcohol to anyone under 18 in a home, unless the provider has the parent’s permission.

“Leigh was a character, very outgoing. I still remember a time ... he was only a little tacker, around three years old. We stopped for a sandwich on our way to Queensland and he joined a family that was playing cricket. He just starting batting.”

Today, Clark continues to campaign on a local and national level.

“I made a decision to speak about it. The message has to be heard and it’s up to the parents. Many parents don’t know what’s really going on.

“The government has a role, industry has a role, schools and kids themselves, but it is largely parents.”

The issue became a reality for Moorabool mother Sally, who asked that her real name not be used, when one of her children was admitted to hospital for binge drinking.

‘‘It was really frightening, but our child felt comfortable enough to call us. Many parents don’t have that luxury; a lot of kids keep things from their parents.

‘‘But the next morning, we were very clear with what could have happened. We said: ‘You could have been raped, you could have been badly hurt.’ It was a wake-up call.’’

The incident had a signifi cant impact, says the mother, adding that it’s important parents keep communication fl owing with their teenagers.

‘‘Our teenager was bullied and was forced to drink and ‘write themselves off’’.

Sally says peer pressure is ‘‘incredible’’ for young people, highlighting the importance of parents making themselves accountable.

‘‘When my kids would tell me their friends’ parents would be around during a party, I had no problems calling the parents and checking.’’

Sally says she’s aware drinking is one of the ways in which teenagers experiment and push boundaries.

‘‘But it’s a parent’s role to talk to your kids about what can happen. I know that for a lot of teenagers drinking is about masking their insecurities. And I know one of my children started drinking because she felt like she needed to fi t in.’’

Sally says parents need to be vigilant in raising teenagers.

‘‘Someone could say to my child, ‘Try some Ice (methamphetamine)’, and the next day we could have an Ice addict.’’

She says children as young as 12 are increasingly looking for thrills, at any cost.

‘‘There’s no more milestones for teenagers; everything is so accessible. What do you do for a thrill when you have it all?

‘‘Children used to wait and save. They would wait until they turned 18, until they could drink, but now they can get drunk at 16. The idea of having to wait is a concept they’re not familiar with.’’

Sally is grateful for the unifying infl uence of sports clubs in Bacchus Marsh and their efforts to discourage teenage drinking.

President of the Bacchus Marsh Football Club Pat Mullen says a no-drinking policy for junior games is an important part of the club’s philosophy.

Turning Point drug and alcohol centre’s addiction medicine specialist Dr Matthew Frei says teenagers tend to drink in patterns and often in settings that put them at risk.

‘‘It’s a period of life when they’re taking risks and fi nding out about themselves and how far they can extend themselves.’’

Frei says that alcohol impairs teenagers’ judgment, causing them to behave impulsively, and disrupts motor skills.

But he says that while the evidence of binge drinking is increasing, drinking excessively is almost accepted as a social norm.

‘‘It’s almost a rite of passage for teenagers — an expected pattern of behaviour.

‘‘In the teenage years, there’s an important amount of brain development with substantial neurological changes. There’s a growing body of evidence that alcohol adversely affects the brain.’’

Frei agrees that drinking alcohol is a part of Australian culture and has a great deal to do with socialising.

‘‘It’s socially accepted. Alcohol is considered an essential drug in celebratory interaction.’’

But he says teenagers can be diffi cult to engage in discussing alcohol’s potential harm.

‘‘We know young people who observe their parents drinking will imitate their behaviour. We formulate most of what we do from our parents.

‘‘But it can be hard for adults because they think they can do what they like because they are in fact, adults, and their children are still children.

‘‘Parents need to refl ect on the effect that their drinking has on others.’’

Frei says he knows that talking about regulation and limiting an individual’s right to choose aren’t the most popular dinner party topics.

‘‘They are the sorts of discussion that are diffi cult to have. No one likes to talk about regulation.

‘‘However, alcohol is widely available and socially acceptable, relatively affordable, which makes it the most popular drug for young people.

‘‘We need to think of innovative ways to get through to teenagers. A 14-year-old is not interested in hearing about the harm of alcohol.

‘‘What about telling them that it makes you less sexy, that it makes you fat? That it really doesn’t have much going for it?’’

Re: Fire levy pushes rates bill up(Melton Weekly, September 4):Our rates for this current year are up 20.7 per centwithout the fire levy. While the most profitable oforganisations, such as banks and mining compan-ies, are tightening their belts by taking costs out oftheir businesses, our council does not have to worry

about costs. It just slugs the ratepayers for moremoney by increasing the rates. While no doubt ithas the legal right to do so, we ask what moral rightdoes it have, when most families and pensioners aresinking under the weight of increased cost of living.The council seems to have no problems findingmoney for non-essential projects, such as themoney spent on works in Palmerston Street. Coun-cil must also look for cost savings within its admin-istration. Other organisations are doing this.Melton Council should promise ratepayers it willkeep rate increases to CPI or councillors should bevoted out in the coming elections. As its name suggests, Ilha Grande is big —in more ways than one, writes Rebecca Miller

Portuguese for ‘big island’, IlhaGrande is like a South Americanversion of the Whitsundays, but

with a cultural twist.It’s accessible only by boat — either

a 45-minute catamaran ride (which Iwas supposed to be on had it notbroken down) or a 11⁄2 hour journey inan old brightly coloured wooden boat.

I shared the latter with tourists andlocals bringing meat (leaking bloodover the boats floor) and producefrom the mainland of Angra dos Reis.However, this failed to spoil the idyllicviews of the crystal clear bay and theBrazilian eye candy, in the form of twochocolate-skinned boat captains. Andso the cultural experience began.

The 10-minute walk to the hotel, ahut complete with hammock, wasmade easier with the help of a localman happy to carry my luggage for asmall tip.

While admittedly I spent manyhours reading in the hammock duringmy time on Ilha Grande, for the adven-turous the island has more than 100beaches and plenty of activities fromboat cruises to hikes, cave diving andbathing under waterfalls.

The island wasn’t always a touristdestination. It once served as a route tothe slave trade and until 1994, housedan operating jail.

Along with the beautiful surroundsand friendly locals, the oasis also hadsome cheap but tasty food. Brazilianbuffets were a hit and it was hard topass up a delicious slice of cake fromthe roaming night stalls.

To top it all off, the weather wasperfect. Depending on the season, youcan expect 18- 28 degrees — a niceescape from Melbourne’s coolerweather. Another perk of the island isthere are virtually no cars, which helps

create a quiet and pollution-freeenvironment. The English-Portugueselanguage barrier varies dependingwhere you visit (accommodation,eateries, shops). Some locals speakEnglish while others don’t, so a quicklesson in Portuguese before you arrivecould make life easier.

Exchanging money before arrivingon the island is advised.

This is a great, unique destinationfor travellers who want tosurround themselves with picturesquescenery.

Wired for soundAt last, a television that sounds as good as it looks, writes Rod Easdown

It’s a weird thing that so few electronicscompanies market a complete home cinemapackage. Lots of them make screens and

sound systems, but when it comes to packagingthe two together, they mostly leave that to theirdealers.

Maybe it’s because when packaged soundsystems started to become a genuine marketingproposition — and I reckon that happened whenSony introduced the DAVS300 at $1499 in 2000— we all had cathode ray tube televisionsbecause flat panel plasmas were still the stuff ofdreams. Back then, they were nudging $20,000.

Ever since, sound and vision have continued todevelop separately, to be bought in separatepackages and put together at home by the buyer.

Well, Bose may have just changed all that. Ithas two televisions, a 117cm and a 140cm, withsound built in. Now we’re not talking the regularcouple of minuscule speakers at the bottom ofthe panel that rattle around like tinny old soupcans. Embedded in the back of the television aresix bass drivers using the same waveguide

technology that delivers such rich, crisp bass inthe brand’s Wave Radio.

And there are 10 additional higher rangedrivers that shoot the sound in a number ofdirections so that, as it bounces off walls andceilings around the room, it gives the impressionof surround sound. This idea is not new; Yamahamade it mainstream tech seven years ago with itsfirst soundbar, the $2500 YSP1, and whileit’s still nowhere near as good as the realthing, it works better these days thanks to cleverelectronics.

With the Bose you put on a headset with abuilt-in microphone and take your seat, and thesystem calibrates the speakers to get the correctsound at that point, whatever the shape of theroom may be. It’s all done in minutes and, if youchange the position of the television you just runit through the routine once more.

Despite the generous sound you’re hearing, allyou see is a television and a small console belowit, into which can be plugged your Blu-ray orDVD player, satellite box, games console or

whatever. And there’s only one cable runningbetween this console and the screen.

The speaker array behind the screen meansthat the screen’s cabinet is not the slimmest in thegame, but it is slim enough to be wall-mountedwith minimal intrusion into the room.

The odd thing is that these televisions have notuner, so you’ll need a set-top box or a videorecorder.

The system is controlled by a simple remotethat can be touch-memorised in no time, and itoperates through radio frequency rather thatinfra-red. This means your equipment can bekept inside a cabinet and the remote will stilloperate, and it doesn’t have to be pointed at theequipment to work.

For the package, you pay $6999 for the 117cmand $1000 more for the 140cm.

BMW 118d makes for dream touringEwan Kennedy road tests the German marque’s little convertible

Top down and sun up: The little BMW is just the thing for the good life.

A BMW convertible: sun up, top down, wan-dering along quiet scenic roads in the lastdays of winter in south-east Queensland.

Life doesn’t come much better than this. So wedecided to make a weekend of it and dawdled upto Noosa.

After driving for more than 500 kilometres thelittle 118d convertible was still showing about athird of a tank of diesel left. The efficiency of allcurrent BMW diesels is extremely impressive. Fita little 2.0-litre diesel engine unit into a lightishcar and fuel consumption in the low fives is therefor the asking.

On our holiday trip the fuel consumption wasin the mid five litres per hundred kilometresrange.

With the roof closed, therefore making for bet-ter aerodynamics, it would be easy to get the fuelconsumption down into the high fours.

The second generation of BMW’s 1 Series wasreleased in Australia in October 2011 in hatch-back form. But the convertible in which we havejust spent a most enjoyable week is carried over

from the previous generation. Exterior changesto the shape of the new-gen 1 Series hatchbacksare relatively minor.

Having a soft-top rather than a folding hard-top in the modern manner means the little Bim-mer looks like a ‘proper’ convertible. A hardtopwith the roof raised looks like just anothercoupe.

The 1 Series is the smallest in the BMW rangeand in convertible format, interior space is fur-ther compromised by the need to provide spaceinto which the roof can be lowered.

All these apparent handicaps are soon forgot-ten when we threw ‘our’ BMW 118d at hardcorners on demanding roads in quiet hilly areas.Superb balance is immediately obvious, as areresponsive steering and huge amounts of corner-ing grip.

Those who put sheer driving pleasure ahead ofall else will simply love every moment they spendbehind the wheel.

Prices start at $53,200, not including govern-ment or dealer delivery charges.

Almera’s strength lies in its passen-ger cabin with class-leading space.

On a short drive in the country (thewintry Dandenongs) the Nissan Alm-era manual ran true to form, findingthe flat to its liking but running out ofbreath in higher gears hitting the hills.

The aforementioned spacious cabinprovided a relatively comfortable and

quiet travelling environment.And so to the exterior. The Almera

shares a new Nissan global design dir-ection, its signature grille and largewraparound headlights producing afuel-saving aerodynamic package.

I’m sure the Almera will garner fol-lowers. It is what it is, an inexpensivelittle runabout with class-leadingcabin space; and does what it does,doing it without complaint. Pricesstart at $16,990, not including govern-ment or dealer delivery charges.

New Jeep is just grandOverhauled Cherokee is a winner, writes Ewan Kennedy

Smooth: Athletic and capable are the words that come to mind when looking at the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Upgraded: Interior is a big improvement over previousmodels and can now truly accept the ‘luxury’ tag.

The latest Jeep Grand Cherokee’s lines aresmooth and athletic and of course there’s aseven-bar chrome vertical grille announcing

the Jeep DNA.Last year the Grand Cherokee was given an

overhaul for the 2012 season. It had a below-parinterior and a 3.8-litre petrol V6 that guzzledfuel.

Now, the interior sets a new standard for this,Jeep’s flagship. The dash sets the tone with

stitched leather and the way it seems to naturallyinteract with the door trim to create a great cabineffect. The seats are supportive, maybe a little toofirm, and have a lumbar adjustment.

The rear seats are also firm but comfortable.Being leather they will wear in. Storage areasabound and the rear seat passengers now haveimproved legroom. There’s a fold-down centrearmrest when two occupy the second row. Headand shoulder room is good.

The 2012 model also has a new design 3.6-litreV6 engine. While it is an improvement in bothperformance and economy, it is still no fuel saint.

Changes to the Grand Cherokee are small butimportant: the doors open wider and the passen-gers have more knee and leg room. Cargo space isup by 11 per cent to 782 litres with the seats upand 1554 with the rear seat folded.

There’s not a lot of difference between the3.6-litre petrol V6 and the V8. Where it doesmatter is in towing where the V8 will haul up to3500 kg while the V6 is just 2268 kg.

Despite the classy makeover, the 2012 JeepGrand Cherokee is still true to its roots as a

highly capable get-down-and-dirty off-roader.The ability to substantially lift the body means inmost situations off-road the Grand Cherokeewill remain grand without the underbody bumpsand hits a 4WD might normally accumulate.

However, we suspect most Grand Cherokeeswill rarely see the dirt and rocks and will be usedas urban vehicles that double up as a tow vehicle,given the 3.5-tonne capability.

On road the Grand Cherokee is a refined pieceof kit that offers a ride as good as any SUV andhandles particularly well for a vehicle that tipsthe scales at almost 2.5 tonnes (with passengers)and is capable of tackling the most serious of off-road terrain. Jeep has done well to balance outthe crossover without compromise.

Prices start at $45,000, not including govern-ment or dealer delivery charges.

DIGGERS Rest will live to fightanother day after avoiding a straightsets exit from Riddell District FootballLeague finals and eliminating Riddellby 15 points at the weekend.

The Burras were hit hard by Riddellearly but overturned a 23-pointquarter-time deficit to win 15.4 (94) to11.13 (79) at Riddells Creek Reserve.

Jack Sheahan’s bag of five goals ledthe scoring as the Diggers Restmidfield responded to the slow startwhere coach Jamie Elliott saidRiddell’s on-ballers dominated.

But there was no quarter-time sprayin the huddle for the Burras in spite ofthe 1.0 to 4.5 scoreline.

‘‘It was more about what we had todo to turn it around, our on-ballersnever touched it,’’ Elliott said.

‘‘Riddell ran hard, once we got ourhands on the ball things started turn-ing around.

‘‘We took our chances when we got

the ball into the forward line quickly.Jack was an important part of that.’’

A stint in the ruck for key playerBrent Tuckey contributed to his beingnamed as the Burras’ best.

‘‘To beat Riddell is a really goodperformance, they’re well coached andour boys stood up when the timecame.’’

Jarrod Silvester kicked four goalsfor the Bombers while Rhys Lowry,Matt Sammut and Xavier Codd werebetter players for the Bombers.

MELTON has broken the western strangleholdon the Ballarat Netball League with a three-goalsecond semi-final win against Lake Wendouree inthe A grade second semi-final.

The Bloods are through to the grand final to beplayed on September 22 after their 42-39 win atDarley Park.

The Lakers won 15 of 16 games through thehome and away season but couldn’t matchMelton’s competitive spirit in the dying stages atthe weekend.

Lake Wendouree will play East Point in thepreliminary final this weekend for the right tomeet Melton in the grand final after theKangaroos beat Bacchus Marsh in the first semi-final on Sunday.

Melton’s Melissa McCauley shot 36 of herteam’s 42 goals as Melton came from behind atthree-quarter-time to win.

‘‘As soon as we got even, that’s where wefound our legs,’’ coach Krista Woodroffe said.

‘‘We applied a lot of pressure and the ball justhappened to go our way.

‘‘From the get-go it was goal for goal. We didget little breaks, one or two ahead, but we were

about three or four down coming into the lastquarter. I knew the girls would have a strong lastquarter.’’

Woodroffe said her team had kept thingsconsistent and played to its strengths, havingfailed to find its best form in previous meetingsagainst the two western powerhouses.

‘‘Our defence was strong all day. It was a veryphysical match.

‘‘The big thing was centre court. Amy Conroyin centre and Jessica Kalmar in wing defence putthe pressure on in the last three minutes andforced turnovers.’’

Woodroffe said the confidence in the group tomake the grand final had been there all season,but the team had to play to its full potential to getthe results.

‘‘We hadn’t shown our best against East Pointor Lake Wendouree, but we knew we would becompetitive.

‘‘Now we’ve got to keep our heads a little bitsmall and come together to prepare for the grandfinal.’’

Bacchus Marsh lost 61-46 to East Point atEastern Oval in the first semi-final.

The Cobras have the only Melton-Mooraboolrepresentative on the court this weekend with itsC grade outfit playing East Point at Eastern Ovalat 11am on Saturday.

Redan eliminated the Cobras’ B grade outfit inthe first semi-final on Sunday, 34-20.

SoccerMelton Phoenix didn’t take the field at the

weekend, but a catch-up round of games did it no

favours as promotion rivals Heidelberg Stars and

Bundoora United both posted wins. Melton has

two games to play and has 36 points and is now

mathematically out of the promotion race.

Heidelberg Stars (42) and third-placed Bundoora

United (41) play each other on Monday in a catch-

up game and any result will lock Melton out of a

potential top-two finish. Melton is 10 points clear

in fourth. The Phoenix play ladder-leader Darebin

MELTON Central will play Romsey in a prelim-inary final for the second straight year afteroutlasting Riddell Bombers to win by six pointson Sunday.

The Blues proved too good indoors at RiddellsCreek with a 52-46 win in the Riddell DistrictNetball League A grade first semi-final.

After suffering back-to-back losses toMacedon in the final round of home and awayand then qualifying final, the Blues are back ontrack heading into the match against their arch-rivals the Redbacks.

Saturday’s preliminary final will be played atMacedon.

In the second semi-final, Macedon extended itswinning streak to 12 with a 43-38 win againstRomsey at Kyneton Showgrounds.
