Research Report

Objective:To conduct research and prepare written report/projecton a topic related to the class material.

Research Report Basics: All papers must discuss 1/ the exactnature of the topic or issue, 2/ its historical roots, 3/ the characteristicsof its occurrence (what is happening), 4/ the relationship of the

topic/issue to the society in which it is occurring, 5/ the response(s) ofmembers of society to the topic/issue, and 6/ your evaluation of thetopic/issue as an objective social scientist. This exercise isintended to sharpen your analytical skills to deal with complex urbanproblems in a thoughtful, thorough, rational fashion.Topics must be presented in writing by March 9, 2010 on the formprovided and be pre-approved by the Instructor. The report is dueApril 13, 2010. The topic shall not duplicate your oral report topic.Late papers will be marked down 5 points per day, unless otherwiseprovided by the instructor.

Special note: Students may elect to develop a project in lieu of aresearch paper, using a different approach to present your topic. Thismay include a YouTube video, a web site, a diary, an in depthinterview, a sculpture/painting, or other unique approaches. The basicrequirements for this option will need to be discussed separately withthe student before work is begun. PowerPoint presentations are notallowed.

Structure:

Papers are to be 5 pages in length, typed and double-spaced. At leastthree (3) outside sources need to be properly referenced. Consult theMLA Style Sheetor other comparable writing guides for properreferencing of sources and footnotes. Let me know if you havequestions! Use the Writing Lab in Polsky or other locations if you canthey will help! Of course, make sure the rest of your paper uses proper

form, including formatting, grammar and spelling. Text is to be double-spaced, with footnotes single-spaced in numerical sequence at the endof the report. Quotations, if any, need to be indented and single-spaced. Margins are to be 1 1/2 inches at left and top of page. Use onlyone side of paper. Include a separatetitle page, which includes course

name, title of paper, your name, and date.

Examples of Topics:Will be provided soon on the class weblogsite at www.hr016.blogspot.com.(These will be sample topics you mayuse. There are hundreds moreuse your imagination or somethingyoure particularly interested in!)

p.s. Dont wait until the last minute to do your research. If you do,youll be frustrated, and your work will suffer. Prepare your work withcare. Sloppiness will significantly affect your grade.
