THANK YOU GRANDPARENTS Our children loved hosting their grandpar- ents last Friday and judging from the feed- back from grandparents, they loved being here as well. It’s encouraging for our chil- dren that grandparents make this big effort to support them at school as it affirms them in their learning. Thank you grandparents and especially those who ‘adopted’ grandchildren on the day as their grand- parents couldn’t be here. More photos are on our Facebook page. BOOK FAIR Thank you for supporting our Book Fair last Friday. Nearly $4,550 commission was raised through sales that will go back into books for our library. Big thanks to Sarah Penny our Librarian and to the staff who helped with books on the day. CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR 2020 The leadership team puts a lot of thought into all aspects when placing children in classes for next year. It is a very thorough and time consuming process as we con- sider children’s learning needs, teacher/ student relationships, social mixes and new flexible learning environments. If you think there is vital information we are not aware of regarding your child’s place- ment for 2020, this must be put in writing to the Principal by Friday 15 November at the latest. Correspondence received after this date will not be considered. Please re- member this is a courtesy we extend to parents, not a right to choose classes or classmates for children. These requests will be disregarded. Finally, please refrain from making disparaging comments about other pupils, families or teachers. That is not the Hukanui way. YEAR 6 O.E. OPTIONS PROGRAMME The next activities in our Year 6 O.E. Options Programme start next week. The horse riding op- tion is taking place over three days next week from Monday to Wednesday. The caving option takes place the following week on 11 and 12 November. They have all had their letters so know what day they are going. Can parents make sure all students are at school at 7.50 am for the caving with everything they need that is on their list. We cannot wait for late com- ers. Dear Parents/Caregivers Nga mihi kia koutou katoa.

THANK YOU GRANDPARENTS Our children loved hosting their grandpar-ents last Friday and judging from the feed-back from grandparents, they loved being here as well. It’s encouraging for our chil-dren that grandparents make this big effort to support them at school as it affirms them in their learning. Thank you grandparents and especially those who ‘adopted’ grandchildren on the day as their grand-parents couldn’t be here.

ORAL LANGUAGE FOCUS - Phonological Awareness challenge #9 Link Make language play a part of your day; Chil-dren respond to hands-on learning. Try making a collage of items that start with the same sound using pictures from magazines. Sock puppets can be another fun way to work on these skills. Make one that likes to munch on words that start with a certain sound. Let your child have fun ‘feeding’ his puppet different ob-jects or pictures that start with that sound.

STARS OF THE WEEK

Fire WritingAs the fiery monster appeared out of thin air it crashed into the trees on the side of the road. I smell the burning smoke wafting up my nose. I slowly felt my heart slowing down then going faster and it did that over and over again. Cautiously I heard crackling and screaming from the people panicking anxiously trying to get away from the raging fire. I taste black smoke entering my body trying to stop me from breathing but my lungs are fighting it. By Phoebe Meyer

As I walk down the sidewalk a crowd of smoke beams up upon the mountains in front of me... It leaves an ashy path behind and keeps burning tree by tree. I realise that it was heading down this way. I suddenly hear a crackle, bang, crackle. I shiver with fear and immediately ran away. The smoke made me cough and cough. It smelt like a bbq or a fireplace. I felt anxious. By Zoe Godden

Nervously I watch as the trees melt and burn down to the ground. Watching the fire makes my heart beat faster and faster. I'm wondering if the deep dark orange colour of light is going to burst with flames and get closer and closer to me. Mysteriously the tree in front of me is crackling down to the ash textured ground. The concrete I'm standing on turns red like the burning fire. Cautiously I step back and behind me is a dirty old rubbish bin which makes my eyes water and sting. Warily I move to the side but the burning flames come closer and closer. My heart is pounding faster than a lion cub. By Tiare Cottle
