SCHOOL UNIFORMWe have a fantastic gold and black uniform which looks great when it is worn with pride and not mixed with other colours. This year it is compul-sory for ALL children to wear the proper uniform as described in our Uniform Policy. (A full copy can be viewed in the foyer or on our webpage) Please note the insert below from our 2011 Uni-form Procedures.

“The uniform is to be worn at all times with pride, in clean condition.

• Marking or defacing the school uni-form is not acceptable and will be dealt with as a behavioural issue.

• If boys are wearing long socks as part of their uniform choice, these are to be pulled up under the knee. Hats are to be worn in the manner they were de-signed for.

• If tights or undershirts are worn in winter they must be black in keeping with school uniform colours.

• Jewellery is not to be worn at school due to safety concerns

• Hair ties or clips must be in keeping with the colours of the school uniform.

• If your child is unable to wear the uni-form due to an emergency situation a signed letter must be presented to the class teacher explaining the situation.

• If a child does not wear the uniform without written permission they will be given a verbal warning. If this oc-curs again then a letter will be sent home. Repeated offences will be dealt with as a behavioural issue.”

SWIMMING POOLUnfortunately we have had to do some emer-gency replacement of all the rails in the swim-ming pool, which has taken a few days longer than expected. The pool will be open for swim-ming from the start of Week Two, so please en-courage your child to bring their swimming togs and towel from Monday.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT Over the next two weeks teachers will be as-sessing children to determine their levels and their next learning steps in reading , writing and mathematics. Can you please check the school calendar for when the asTTle and STAR tests are held and make every effort for your child to be in school on those important days.

YEAR FOUR CAMPWe wish the Year Four Team and their camp parents all the best for their camp next week at Raglan. It is going to be full on with lots of fun challenging outdoor activities and curriculum studies.

POETRY COMPETITIONLast year in Term 4, Room 23 embarked on creat-ing and organising a writers’ poetry competition, open to the whole school. Each class wrote po-ems based on the theme ‘Hukanui School and what it means to you’. Room 23, with the help of Tracey Hopkins, designed a marking criteria for the best poems to be selected. The descriptive and unique poems we received made the judging task very difficult! Congratulations to the follow-ing 16 children whose poems will be displayed around the school for a year. Keep an eye out for them as we begin to place them.

PARENTING HOT TIP (from Parents Inc) What’s my job? If the school holidays have you feeling run down and irritable, it might be a good time to ask – what’s my job? Are you doing too much for your kids? Six extra hours each day of running, fetching, preparing, solving, and providing would leave anyone completely frazzled, so it’s always smart to check that you’re not taking on too many of your child’s respon-sibilities. If being supportive without taking over is hard for you to do, remember that you can gently push back with phrases like “I bet you could have a good go at doing that all by yourself”, or “That’s a good ques-tion…What do you think the answer might be?”

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM R13Proverbs

If you can't be good you can't get a lolly.Cold hands can't hold a soccer ball.Don't throw the baby out the window.Home is where I sleep. You make your bed you make your day. It's no use use crying if you're dyingHome is where you pull up your socks. It takes a thief to run away from a cop.Don't wash your dirty linen in the pool.If you can't be good then don't be.If life deals you lemons, then why not eat them.Count your fingers.
