A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Spring is here at last and I couldn’t resist taking more photos of thechurch with the blossom out. I hope you like my new front page. Now,Easter will be over when you read this and we will soon be celebratingthe ascension of Christ into heaven shortly followed by Pentecost whenthe Holy Spirit descended on the disciples. Doesn’t time fly?

Well! We have a winner. Our impossible Sudoku has been solved byDavid Knox, the church’s independent examiner of the annual accounts. He has kindly waived the prize as he always gets the magazine free offthe website anyway. So well done David.

Did you spot Sandra in the spring issue of the Awake magazine. The ar-ticle by Marlene Beresford entitled ‘Following In Jesus’ Footsteps’ wasabout the trip to the Holy Land with Bishop Tony in 2008 which Sandraand I went on. You might remember my little publication describingour experiences at the time. The article brought back many fond memo-ries, especially Bishop Tony on the donkey down the route Jesus tookon Palm Sunday, a truly unforgettable experience.

Thought For Ascension

See, the Conqueror mounts in tri-umph,See the King in royal state,Riding on the clouds His chariotTo His heavenly palace-gate;Hark, the choirs of angel voicesJoyful hallelujahs sing,And the portals high are lifted,To receive their heavenly King.

The Wisdom of the Not-So-Young-Anymore

1 I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.2 My wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran.3 I finally got my head together; but now my body is falling apart.4 Funny, I don't remember being absent minded.5 If all is not lost, where is it?

Extracted from the Server magazine Spring 2011

Another Good Reason to go to Church

Those who take notice will be aware that at a Communion Service thewafers and wine that are blessed must be finished off at the end of theEucharist by the celebrant.Unfortunately on the days when very few of us turn up to Church thecelebrant runs the risk of feeling there’s been too much celebrating ifthere’s too much left over.SO – GO TO CHURCH, if for no other reason that the celebrant candrive home safely!

Thanks to Alan John for this.

WHY?

WHY are buildings called buildings when there finished? Shouldn't theybe builts?WHY is abbreviated such a long word?WHY are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?WHAT do you call a male ladybird?

2011 Budget - Gift Aid

As you know we had a budget in March and as the Gift Aid OfficerI have had to find out how it affects the church’s Gift Aid system. Iknow it’s boring but here, in a nutshell, are the facts I have dis-covered:

Gift Aid benefit limits – The Gift Aid benefit limit will be in-creased from £500 to £2,500, subject to the existing 5 per centlimit, from April 2011.Gift Aid small donations scheme – From April 2013, theGovernment will introduce a new scheme to allow charities toclaim Gift Aid on up to £5,000 of small donations without theneed for Gift Aid declarations.Gift Aid online filing – The Government confirms that it willintroduce an online system for charities to claim Gift Aid and as afirst step will shortly be publishing ‘intelligent’ forms (which con-tain automatic checks) for charities to use to apply for and claimtax reliefs.Self Assessment (SA) Donate – To help fund the introductionof Gift Aid online filing, the Government will withdraw SA Donatefor tax returns for 2011-12 onwards.Inheritance tax: reduced rate for charitable donations –From 6 April 2012, the Government will introduce a reduced rateof inheritance tax of 36 per cent for estates leaving 10 per cent ormore to charity.Gifts of works of art – The Government will consult in 2011 onproposals to encourage donations of pre-eminent works of art orhistorical objects to the na-tion in return for a tax re-duction.

Some of this is good newsfor the church. It meansthat we will be able to claima 25% refund of all smalldonations eg collected on

Page 11: Huddersfield Parish Church and the Methodist Mission

*** IMPORTANT NOTICE***

The tax allowances changed in April. If any-one on our Gift Aid list no longer pays tax, they MUST tell us otherwise we will all beupsetting the nice taxman (and the law).

the plate or in the pedestal, (up to £5K per year) but not until2013. The online filing should save me some work. If you want toreduce the inheritance tax for your children then leave 10% of thepart of your estate that is above the inheritance tax threshold of£325,000 to the church.

A Christian JokeOld Mrs. Watkins awoke one spring morning to findthat the river had flooded the entire first floor of herhouse. Looking out of her window, she saw that thewater was still rising. Two men passing by on a row-boat shouted up an invitation to row to safety withthem. "No, thank you," Mrs. Watkins replied. "The Lord will provide."The men shrugged and rowed on.

By evening, the water level forced Mrs. Watkins to climb on top of theroof for safety. She was spotted by a man in a motorboat, who of-fered to pick her up. "Don't trouble yourself," she told him. "The Lordwill provide."

Pretty soon, Mrs. Watkins had to seek refuge atop the chimney. When a Red Cross cutter came by on patrol, she waved it on, shout-ing, "The Lord will provide." So the boat left, the water rose and theold woman drowned.

Dripping wet and thoroughly annoyed, she came through the pearlygates and demanded to speak to God. "What happened?" she cried."For cryin' out loud, lady," God said, "I sent three boats!"

The Parish Walk 2011Mike Bembridge

Durker Roods Hotel and Restau-rant was the start and finish ofthis year’s St Peter’s walk. Agroup of around a dozen ram-blers, accompanied by threedogs, took part in the 2011 par-ish walk organised by David andLesley Stocks.

From the hotel we made our way down onto the track of the old railwayremembering when Meltham residents would don their best clothes for ashopping trip by train into Huddersfield. David Brown’s tractors werealso discussed as the group had its first photo stop by the old railwayturntable with its information boards.

This level section then became an uphill jaunt as we crossed the mainroad and aimed through the countryside for Helme. The church inHelme is, we were told, where David and Lesley had been married someyears ago. It’s a very pretty church, but sadly not open so we were una-ble to explore its interior. From the church we made our way down thefields back onto the old railway to retrace our steps back to DurkerRoods spotting some nonwalking “lunchers” on the way.

Almost twenty enjoyed a verypleasant lunch in the restaurantwith very varied topics of conver-sation discussed before makingour way home for, I suspect, anafternoon nap after the food andexertions. The weather held, thecompany was delightful and thewalk gentle enough to be enjoyedby all including the dogs. A su-per day for fellowship within thechurch.

NEWS FROM YOUR PCC

We still await the arrival of Rev Simon Moor our new vicar. He is dueto be installed by the Bishop of Wakefield and the Archdeacon of Hal-ifax on Wednesday 20 July at 7.30pm. After the service there will be areception in the Keys Restaurant for PCC members and Parishioners.Meanwhile he came to meet the the members of the PCCat the meeting on Wed 20 April, where we had drinksand nibbles.

The PCC decided to purchase a silver cruet as a memorialto the Livingstones out of the legacy they kindly left tothe church. Also a set of candlesticks and processionaltorches have been purchased in memory of Nell Bean-land by her son John.

The Rural Dean chaired the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sun-day 27 March when the annual reports and finances were accepted. Our two present wardens were both voted to stand for another year.Four PCC members were voted in to serve three years. The presentlists of church helpers in various capacities were accepted.

On completion of the ceiling we were visited by the Painters and Dec-orators Association and we have been entered for a national award inthe Painting Contractor of the Year Category. Ramsay Clay should becongratulated for the superb work they have achieved.

HELPWe are still desperate for volunteers to help with the day to day run-ning of the church. If you feel you would like to help even in a smallway, then talk to a Warden for more information on our needs andwhere you may best fit in.

SHOULD THE CHURCH OPEN ON SATURDAYS?We believe so but we are desperately short of Saturday hosts. All thatis needed is to be in church for two hours a month. We need two peo-ple to open up at 10am and two more to relieve them at noon thenlock up at 2pm. Training will be given.
