A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Well we are in the holiday season now with not just our new vicarand his family enjoying a well earned rest, but also the new Meth-odist Minister, Steve Day, sneaking off for a break. It has beenhard pinning one down for the regular address from a Minister.Hopefully by the time you read this both our churches will be fullyup and running (except I’ll be on holiday then).

So what have we in store for September/October? We have Harvest Festival (seePage 11), we have Stewardship Sunday(see Page 8) and we have the Art Exhibi-tion in church for a couple of weeks (seePage 5), a must see. Oh we also have Hal-loween; well! the kids enjoy it.

Following on from the article written byLionel Green in the previous issue, wehave another faith based article, this time

from Michael Burt (Page 14). Like I said everyone must have astory to tell so out with it and send it to me.

How are you getting on with the extra puzzle page? I’ve had nofeedback. Mind you I’ve not been around much.

Sandra and I are seriously consideringhaving solar panels installed on ourroof. It seems like a very good invest-ment at this time and I am slowly be-coming an expert (bore) on the subject. Is there anyone else interested?

Letter from Simon“How’s Huddersfield?” – a question that is posed by people Imeet for the first time and those who contact us from Silkstone orHoylandswaine. “How’s Huddersfield?” It is actually a hard ques-tion to answer.

You see, we moved on the 5th July after five months of beinglocked away behind closed doors, for whenever I was in Hudders-field I was painting and decorating the vicarage, with no chanceto get to know the place. For fifteen days after we moved, we wereall ensconced in unpacking box after box and finding homes forall our possessions. Then came the Induction and a mere fourdays later we deserted Huddersfield for the sun. Telling folk wemet in Tenerife that we were from Huddersfield felt quite strange, fortunately no one questioned us too closely as our knowledgewas scant. Back for another nine days at the beginning of Augustand then we visited family in Northern Ireland and friends inScotland. So by 28th August and over 50 days living in the Vicar-age, I’ve only been in or around Huddersfield for 13 days.

Now it is said that moving is one of the most stressful events inanyone’s life. After the last six months I would wholeheartedlyagree. I haven’t moved that much in my life; once as a baby whendad began work at Creswell colliery having lived in a small tied

farm house. We lived and grew up inthe same house until 1990 when wemoved forty yards across the road –wecarried absolutely everything by hand.I was then soon off to theological col-lege, more of an exploration than amove and then only in term time.Even then I was close enough to hometo nip back for mum’s Sunday dinners. An eventual curacy to Skegness wassomething similar, shiny and new and

7

of the moment. I moved with furniture and everything else re-quired for a first house, begged, borrowed or bought for me byfamily and friends.

Caroline and I were married six weeks after I was ordained andsharing the setting up of the house helped us to establish ourhome. Yet we were to move to Airedale, Castleford after onlythree years and then onto Silkstone after two. On reflection bothmoves sit comfortably as adventures rather than huge upheavals. We were a young (and expanding family), leaving places we wereonly ever going to stay in for set periods of time. Good friendswere established, and some remain still on Christmas card andoccasional visit lists.

Moving from Silkstone has been significantly different and stress-ful in its own way. All our roots are deeply planted in both churchand the wider community there. Jess and Peter have grown upand know no different place to call home. To continue the allego-ry, like a cherry tree or raspberry plant when moved, part of ourroot system remains, while the trunk, root ball and branches arenow in Huddersfield. This in itself has been a lot to deal withalongside the physical moving of everything we own.

Thank goodness for holidays! Time to do nothing except relax andrecharge in anticipation of September. Now is the time for ignor-ing the elephant in the room of new beginnings. For although weonly moved in July, our hearts, minds and thoughts of the futurehave been here since February.

As a family we are settling but not quite settled yet. Our house is ahome already and we will be having an open house one Saturdayin September (date is to be confirmed and will be advertised inchurch). Soon, when holidays are over and school has started, apattern will begin and a future will unfold in God’s good time.

Please keep telling me your name and more importantly tell mesomething of your story as that is how I remember more easily.

Stewardship SundayA date for Stewardship Sunday has not yet been fixed.

This is to give you no time to go runand hide or arrange last minute holi-days.

So, what’s it all about?

Our church finance gurus will giveyou a briefing on how the church fi-nances are doing. We can all guess

can’t we? The bills are too high and the money coming in is toolow. So what can we do? We all either give/raise more money orthe heating goes off; it’s that simple. More bums on seats willhelp.

All you taxpayers, have you signed a Gift Aid Declaration? If youdon’t know, or haven’t done yet, let me know and I will sort it.This allows the church to claim from the taxman an extra 25% ontop of everything you give.

So who’s looking after thefinances?

Treasurer Anne JohnGivings Officer Alan EastwoodLegacies Officer Alan EastwoodGift Aid Officer Peter Chadwick

Then there’s the Wardens (Pearl and Barbara) who collect andcount all the money and the Church Administrator Paula whodoes all the bookkeeping and paperwork.

Peter ChadwickYou must give to get. You must sow the seed, before you can reap the harvest. Scott Reed

More Jokes (as I have space to fill)

A conscientious incumbent decided to get acquainted with a new familyin his congregation and visited them one spring evening. After hisknock on the door a lilting voice from within called out "Is that you An-gel" "No" the minister replied "but I am from the same department."

When I was younger I hated going to weddings. All my aunts wouldpoke me in the ribs and cackle "You're the next." They stopped doing itwhen I started doing it to them at funerals"

A Sunday school teacher was telling her class about Daniel and the li-ons' den. To illustrate the lesson she drew a picture of Daniel standingbrave and confident with a group of lions around him. Suddenly one lit-tle girl started to cry. The teacher said "Don't cry, the lions will not eatDaniel". Snuffling back the tears the little girl replies: "That's not what Iam crying about. That little lion over in the corner, isn't going to get an-ything to eat."

MY ANGELBy Michael Burt

Briefly and without over-dramatisingthe past few years, I have rattled thosepearly gates three times now, and I amstill here, thus making me believe forthe first time in my life that I have aguardian angel. I wouldn’t test this ideaby jumping in front of a bus, but there issomething out there which helps memost of the time, now giving me a betterlife than I could wish for.

OK, so this old bag of bones Ihave to live in isn’t completeanymore and has left my toilethabits bizarre and a full night’ssleep is a thing of the past, butso what! I am still here and en-joy myself for once by going outevery day using my bus pass.Simple things now give mepleasure. One day at a time isthe order of the day.

If you keep thinking of the future you will miss the now!

Life does pass quickly so try to enjoy each day and remember, whatever your problems are, they could always be worse. Smilemore, be polite and if you have grave problems believe me thereare human angels out there too just waiting to help you. Start byasking people in the church and I’m sure they will put you intouch with the right help.

God BlessMichael

A Christian Joke

On their way to get married, a cou-ple have a fatal car accident. Whilethey are waiting for St. Peter, theywonder if they could possibly getmarried in Heaven. St. Peter finallyshows up and so they ask him.

"I don't know” St. Peter says, “Thisis the first time anyone has everasked me this, let me go and findout," and he leaves.

During three months waiting outside the gates of Heaven thecouple begin to wonder if they really should get married inHeaven, what with the eternal aspect of it all. “What if it doesn'twork out” they wonder. “Will we be stuck with each other forev-er?”

St. Peter returned, looking somewhat bedraggled. "Yes," he in-forms the couple. "You can get married in Heaven." "Great,"says the couple, "but what if things don't work out? Could wealso get a divorce in Heaven?" St. Peter, red-faced, slams hisclipboard onto the ground! "What's wrong?" exclaims thefrightened couple. "Come on" St. Peter exclaims. "It took methree months to find a priest up here! Do you have any ideahow long it's going to take me to find a lawyer?”

NEWS FROM YOUR PCC

There’s not a lot to report from the PCC this time. There was nomeeting in August as we all need a rest sometimes.

We have our new Vicar, we have our new ceiling and we have our or-gan back, so things are looking good.

The PCC is still aiming to purchase a pair of engraved silver cruets tocommemorate the service which the Livingstones had given to theParish Church. This is proving to be harder than we thought.

The security of the rear Crypt door has been questioned and it is feltwe should replace it with a sturdier one.

There is a display at the back of the church detailing the sources ofincome that have been received for the ceiling work. Very gratefulthanks expressed to all donors. The ceiling appeal is now closed.

The next phase in the North Wall project is the preparation and issu-ing of tender documents which is planned to be completed by Octo-ber 2011. The work will commence (as agreed) in May 2012.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are still desperate for volunteers to help with the day to day run-ning of the church. Would you like to lead prayers or give read-ings? Would you like to join the Saturday hosting team , or givehymn books out. There are many jobs so if you feel you would liketo help even in any small way, then talk to a Warden for more infor-mation on our needs and where you may best fit in.Training will be given.

THE CHURCH COFFEE MORNING

This was our gathering in July, not a bad turnout eh? For those ofyou who still don’t know, the church coffee morning takes placeevery last Wednesday in the month except August (so I’ve just

been told). The size of the group varies depending on who is avail-able at the time and we meet at the Keys Restaurant at 10.15amto just chat and drink coffee for about an hour. Some of us (tomention no names) indulged in bacon butties! The event is organ-ised by Christine Sparks (third from right)so if you wish to join us have a word or justturn up to the next one on 28 Septemberand then 26 October.
